PlayStation is the best-selling console line ever with 450m sales

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 3, 2019 9:11 PM CST

Sony just won a Guinness World Record for the most consoles sold in the history of gaming.

PlayStation is the best-selling console line ever with 450m sales

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Sony's entire PlayStation line of consoles has cumulatively sold more than 450 million units worldwide since 1997. This huge milestone beats competitors like Nintendo and Microsoft, the former of which was in the game for two generations for the PlayStation, and the latter who jumped in during the PS2 era.

Nintendo isn't too far behind with 322.54 million home consoles sold, including the Switch. But this is only home consoles, not including handhelds. With handhelds like the DS and Game Boy included, Nintendo has sold a monstrous 670.7 million units of hardware, eclipsing Sony quite easily.

Resident Evil 3 Remake art spotted on PSN

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 3, 2019 7:10 PM CST

It's happening, folks. As confirmed by some officially leaked promo art, Resident Evil 3 Remake is on the way.

Resident Evil 3 Remake art spotted on PSN

Today Sony accidentally leaked out Resident Evil 3 Remake key art on the PlayStation Network, stealing thunder from the big announcement (presumably at The Game Awards) and validating months of rumors. The art, which has since been taken down, was crawled by a stat-tracking website.

The art is pretty simplistic, showing protagonists Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliviera framed by the ominous Nemesis, and underlines one simple point: Resident Evil 3 is getting reborn in the RE Engine's potent graphics engine, complete with overhauled lighting, character models, animations, and amazing environments. Expect RE3 Remake to mirror RE2 Remake's impeccable visuals and incredible sound design.

Gamer used PlayStation Network to sell cocaine

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 3, 2019 3:21 PM CST

According to documents acquired by Vice, a PlayStation gamer was using Sony's online PS Network to set up big drug deals.

Gamer used PlayStation Network to sell cocaine

A brave gamer was apparently using his favorite past-time to sell substantial amounts of cocaine. The documents reveal the suspect, Curtis Alexander, had used the PlayStation Network's in-game voice chat and messaging system to orchestrate hefty drug deals. A source reveals Alexander allegedly sold up to kilograms of cocaine at a time, and used PSN to communicate with buyers.

The informant told the FBI, who then sent a warrant to Sony that demanded tons of info on Alexander including any recorded messages sent or received on the PlayStation Network, and his gaming habits. We still don't know what game Alexander used to contact buyers on, but it's probably a big online game with tons of players--maybe Call of Duty or Destiny.

Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 765/765G: making 5G mainstream

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Dec 3, 2019 3:02 PM CST

Qualcomm has a lot to share at its annual Snapdragon Summit, between their new Snapdragon 765 and Snapdragon 765G processors was the flagship Snapdragon 865.

Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 765/765G: making 5G mainstream

But it is the Snapdragon 765 series that will push 5G into the mainstream, as it'll offer 5G connectivity in cheaper devices thus propelling next-gen connectivity into a much larger consumer base. Flagship device sales aren't anywhere near the mainstream market, something Qualcomm will continue to nail with Snapdragon 765.

The new Snapdragon 765 is powered by the Snapdragon X52 Modem-RF system, offering up multi-gigabit speeds of up to 3.7Gbps down over mmWave and sub-6. Impressive stuff for a mainstream chipset for future mainstream smartphones in 2020 and beyond.

Verizon: 'we're the first with 5G on the beach' at Snapdragon Summit

Anthony Garreffa | Connectivity & Cloud | Dec 3, 2019 2:44 PM CST

Qualcomm's annual Snapdragon Summit started today, with the whirlwind announcement of its next-gen Snapdragon 865 mobile platform -- a cemented future in 5G expecting 2.8 billion 5G devices in 2025, and then Verizon took the stage.

Verizon: 'we're the first with 5G on the beach' at Snapdragon Summit

Verizon has been a close partner of Qualcomm for many years now, and has been investing into its infrastructure to have it ready for the new world of 5G in 2019, 2020, and beyond. Verizon has been working with partners like the band Chainsmokers on some augmented reality experiences at concerts powered by 5G.

The 5G-powered AR experience was enabled thanks to the multi-gigabit speeds, something that you couldn't do on a sometimes unreliable Wi-Fi connection or much slower 4G connection. Verizon has also been working with Sony on using 5G technology inside of high-end cameras at sports matches to pull high-end video to the post-production office faster.

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Dec 3, 2019 2:20 PM CST

Qualcomm has made its next-gen Snapdragon 865 chip official at its annual Snapdragon Summit, and while they won't deep dive into what makes it tick until tomorrow... we know that it is the most kick ass SoC ever made.

The new Snapdragon 865 takes things to the next level over the already impressive Snapdragon 855, with the new SoC taking out the #1 positions in virtually every category not just against its predecessor, but every Qualcomm competitor, too.

CPU, GPU, RF, modem, AI, and the camera -- Qualcomm dominates with its new Snapdragon 865. The new Snapdragon 865 supports up to 200-megapixel camera sensors, so we should expect some insane smartphones next year with 200MP cameras that will blow us away, again.

Riot to pay $10 million in gender discrimination lawsuit settlement

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Dec 3, 2019 8:32 AM CST

Riot Games has settled their gender discrimination lawsuit for $10 million, the LA Times reports.

Riot to pay $10 million in gender discrimination lawsuit settlement

Riot Games has a big problem with how it treats women. A huge 2018 expose from Kotaku revealed the billion-dollar League of Legends maker is endemic with sexism, harassment, and sophomoric behavior which fostered a hostile work environment for its female workers. Riot has since pledged to change its ways, but it's worth mentioning leadership hasn't shifted much. The news was followed by a huge gender discrimination lawsuit filed against the developer months after the reveal.

Now little over a year after the expose, Riot Games is settling the lawsuit. The company has agreed to pay $10 million divided up to all current and past women employed by Riot since 2014. The studio has employed 1,000 women since that time, but full-time employees will receive a bigger chunk than outside contractors.

Violent video game content on YouTube will have fewer age-restrictions

Jak Connor | Internet & Websites | Dec 3, 2019 5:00 AM CST

YouTube has made some large changes to their policies regarding gaming content and violence being on their platform.

Violent video game content on YouTube will have fewer age-restrictions

YouTube has taken to their official Twitter account to announce that from today "scripted or simulated violence in video games will be treated the same as violence in other scripted content like movies & TV". This means that less gaming content that has scripted violence will be age-restricted by YouTube, opening up gaming content to way more potential viewers.

YouTube says, "We know there's a difference between real-world violence and scripted or simulated violence - such as what you see in movies, TV shows, or video games - so we want to make sure we're enforcing our violent or graphic content policies consistently". While this might sound really good for video game content creators, YouTube's policy still states that if the video contains an overwhelming amount of violence, or if violence is the focus of the video, then it will still become age-restricted. If you are interested in reading more about the policy changes, check out this link here.

Cyberpunk 2077's dialogues are 'wider scale' compared to The Witcher 3

Jak Connor | Gaming | Dec 3, 2019 4:13 AM CST

CD Projekt Red isn't holding back at all for Cyberpunk 2077, and one of the aspects the developer is honing in on is the NPC's that are present throughout the world.

Cyberpunk 2077's dialogues are 'wider scale' compared to The Witcher 3

If you are a fan of CD Projekt Red games, you might have played the critically acclaimed title, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. In that game, players could experience extensive dialogues with NPCs (non-playable characters). CD Projekt Red is planning on going above and beyond The Witcher 3 with Cyberpunk 2077, and according to Story Director, Marcin Blacha, the game's dialogue takes up "two thick books" worth of writing.

Blacha also talks about how Cyberpunk 2077's game dialogue compares to The Witcher 3, and he says that Cyberpunk 2077 has much wider scale stories than The Witcher 3. This is because the problems that are being discussed by NPC's aren't small human squabbles, but instead, they are bigger problems that are more relevant to the entire world. Having this level of dialogue in a game will create a high level of atmospheric immersion for players, and I think that's what CD Projekt Red is aiming for.

Interstellar visitor photographed, revealing a 100,000 mile-long tail

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Dec 3, 2019 3:43 AM CST

A comet called 2I/Borisov entered our solar system from a distant realm, and as it makes its way through our neighborhood astronomers have snapped some good photos of it.

Interstellar visitor photographed, revealing a 100,000 mile-long tail

A team of astronomers from Yale University located in Connecticut managed to capture some photos of Comet 2I/Borisov on Sunday, November 24. These photos were taken with the Keck Observatory in Hawaii and revealed to onlookers that the comet's tail measured in at about 100,000 miles long. To put this distance into perspective, that same distance is more than 40% the distance to the moon.

With a tail being that long, you'd imagine the size of the comet to be substantially large -- alas it isn't. Astronomers estimate 2I/Borisov's nucleus (center) to be just 1 mile in diameter. On December 8th, 2I/Borisov will make its closest pass to our Sun, then three weeks after that it will safely glide past Earth. Yale astronomy professor Greg Laughlin said, "Astronomers are taking advantage of Borisov's visit, using telescopes such as Keck to obtain information about the building blocks of planets in systems other than our own".

Marvel's Spider-Man PS4 sequel maybe arriving 'sooner than you think'

Jak Connor | Gaming | Dec 3, 2019 2:09 AM CST

Since Sony own Insomniac Games, and the fact that Marvel's Spider-Man was an overwhelming success selling over 13 million copies, fans can expect there will be some kind of sequel.

Marvel's Spider-Man PS4 sequel maybe arriving 'sooner than you think'

There is no doubt that Sony and Insomniac Games are cooking up some form of sequel behind the scenes, and according to former Games Informer news editor, Imran Khan, they already are. Khan said during the latest Kind Funny Gamescast video that "I know too much about [Marvel's Spider-Man 2], so I can't speculate too much".

Imran continues and says that while players of the first Spider-Man might think that it will still be some time before they receive a sequel, "I think a Spider-Man 2 will come sooner than we think". This is promising news for Spider-Man fans are a sequel is definitely most welcomed. What won't be appreciated though is if Sony and Insomniac re-skin the first Spider-Man and just sell it back to fans as Spider-Man 2 with no new improvements. The sequel will have to feel new, more mechanics, more suits, new enemies etc.

There should be a big 'twist' in Rick and Morty Season 4 episode 4/5

Jak Connor | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Dec 3, 2019 1:39 AM CST

We are currently waiting for Rick and Morty Season 4, episode 4, and during this small holiday break, theories have been formed together that point towards the next couple of episodes containing a massive twist.

There should be a big 'twist' in Rick and Morty Season 4 episode 4/5

Firstly, if you haven't seen the third episode of season 4, this article will contain spoilers as it will be linking to some events that were shown in that episode. At the end of the third episode, Rick, Morty and Mr. Poopybutthole are on top of Rick's house having a drink, Mr. Poopybutthole says, "owweeee big storm coming", Rick then replies, "could be a twister". Its believed that this "big twister" is not in reference to an actual storm, but instead to the show's storyline, and here's why.

During Comic-Con this year, all of the main voice actors sat down, and one of the questions that they were asked was "What are you most excited for fans to see?". The replies indicated that within the first five episodes of the season, there would be a big moment during a post-credit scene of one of the episodes that would be a huge teaser for season 5. Justin Roiland says, "We have a tag in season 4 that's going to tease some sh*t up for season 5". So what could this "twist" be?

World's 1st AI cameras that detect drivers using phones hit Australia

New South Wales (NSW), a state in Australia has said that these new cameras use artificial intelligence to determine whether some is or isn't using their phone while operating a moving vehicle. The system will flag a driver if they are suspected as using a phone, and then the images will be reviewed by a human before fines are issued out. NSW police assistant commissioner, Michael Corboy, told Australian media that "It's a system to change the culture."

At the moment, the plans for these cameras include forty-five of them to roll out across the state over the next three years. The Australian law is giving drivers a small grace period, as for the first three months if a driver is caught by one of these cameras they will be issued an official warning -- after the three months fines of $344 AUD ($233 US) will be sent out as well as penalty points. The NSW government has said that having these cameras on the roads could prevent 100 fatal crashes across a five year period.

This new tool is apart of the Data Transfer Project which is a lodged agreement between Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Twitter. This agreement between companies is to make it much easier for users on each platform to share content to other platforms.

The new feature will be first released in Ireland and then rolled out to the rest of the world within the first half of 2020. At the moment, Facebook users will only be able to export the media attached to their account to Google Photos. Eventually, Facebook and other social media platforms should allow users to export/import media to all different services, or at least that is what the goal is.
