Project Scarlett devkits aren't widely available yet

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 30, 2019 3:31 PM CST

Sony's PlayStation 5 devkits have been spotted multiple times now, complete with a crazy-looking ventilation system and a front LCD panel. But what about the next-gen Xbox? According to The Verge's Tom Warren, Project Scarlett devkits are few and far between.

Project Scarlett devkits aren't widely available yet

Apparently Project Scarlett devkits are somewhat rare, at least according to The Verge's Tom Warren. It looks like Microsoft is very sparingly doling out what devkits that are available to first-party developers, likely to teams like Turn10 who was tremendously instrumental in shaping and fine-tuning the Xbox One X. The first phase of Project Scarlett devkit rollouts hasn't really happened yet, hinting Microsoft is still working on the hardware--which bodes well considering Project Scarlett's massive backward compatibility capabilities.

"Hardly anyone has [Project Scarlett devkits], and they're nowhere near final. That's why you're hearing a lot of nonsense about them not being powerful etc. Microsoft wants to surprise Sony this time," Warren said on Twitter.

Leaked PlayStation 5 devkit photos show new DualShock controller

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 30, 2019 10:38 AM CST

The latest leaked PS5 devkit photos show the consoles turned on and operating, complete with an LCD panel with real-time hardware usage and a DualShock 5 controller to the side.

Leaked PlayStation 5 devkit photos show new DualShock controller

A bit ago we spotted the first PlayStation 5 devkit photos, but the system wasn't actually powered up. The PS5 devkit has that distinctly expansive ventilation system for heat management and easy stackability, hinting there's some serious horsepower under there, and a screen similar to Project Scorpio's devkit that gives out key info in real-time, including RAM and CPU usage, but the exact values are fuzzy.

There's also a small look at the upcoming PS5 controller, at least the prototype of one. We can't get a good look at the controller but it seems to match the new ergonomic design outlined in the DualShock 5 controller patents. There's apparently no lightbar.

Scientists confused: black hole so big it 'shouldn't even exist' found

Astronomers have stumbled across a black hole that is so damn large that they are perplexed at how it even exists.

Scientists confused: black hole so big it 'shouldn't even exist' found

Just this past Thursday, astronomers managed to find a black hole that is so big that it challenges our current models of black holes. The black hole called LB-1 is 15,000 light-years from Earth and measures in at a mass of 70 times greater than the Sun. Astronomers have said that this black hole is twice as massive as anything scientists thought to be possible.

According to Liu Jifeng, a National Astronomical Observatory of China professor who led the research, "Black holes of such mass should not even exist in our galaxy, according to most of the current models of stellar evolution". Generally, scientists and astronomers believe there are two types of black holes. First, of which are stellar black holes, these are more common, up to 20 times more massive than the Sun and form when a star collapses in on itself.

Computation at the speed of light achieved, new device bridges big gap

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Nov 30, 2019 12:28 AM CST

Scientists have managed to create the first-ever device that can program either photons or electrons with information.

Computation at the speed of light achieved, new device bridges big gap

Harish Bhaskaran's Advanced Nanoscale Engineering research group at the University of Oxford, partnered with other research universities, has conceived the first-of-a-kind electro-optical device. This device paves the way forward for achieving faster and more energy-efficient memories and processors. For some time, humans have been toying with the idea of being able to transfer information at the speed of light, now that idea is within reach.

This device uses light to encode as well as transfer information, which means that the speed of which the information is traveling is that of -- light. So how did the researchers do this? Originally there was a compatibility issue between photons and electrons being used for data storage. So, the researchers reduced the size of the light down into nanoscopic dimensions and combined that with an increase in energy density. For a more detailed explanation, visit this link here.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order looks slick with Cinematic FX mod

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Nov 29, 2019 7:35 PM CST

EA and developer Respawn Entertainment have built an already great-looking game in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which is also the fastest-selling Star Wars game ever -- but now it looks even better with the Fallen Order Cinematic FX mod applied.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order looks slick with Cinematic FX mod

The video above is a comparison video between the vanilla (no mod) and then the Fallen Order Cinematic FX mod on the right, which uses Depth Haze to add blurring as well as ambient fog in the distance. On top of that, it has been color graded with the ReShade effect that really makes the game pop on top of the ReShade Bloom effect that adds a glow effect to effects -- making those lightsabers look even more realistic. It's subtle, but effective.

You can grab the Fallen Order Cinematic mod right here from Nexusmods.

Baby Yoda coming to Battlefront II in unofficial mod

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 29, 2019 6:28 PM CST

It's time: Baby Yoda needs to be in a game. We can't wait for Disney or EA to do it. Luckily, we have modders.

Baby Yoda coming to Battlefront II in unofficial mod

Baby Yoda, aka the best thing about modern Star Wars, is coming to Battlefront II. Not as DLC, but as an unofficial mod. Skilled Battlefront modder Nanobuds1220 is bringing everyone's favorite fuzzy green boy to the long-lived shooter as a playable hero, complete with custom textures.

Obviously Baby Yoda (or, as he's officially known at Disney, The Child) has grown up quite a bit and isn't so innocent and lovable as in The Mandalorian. He's followed in Yoda's footsteps and become a badass Jedi with a little cloak and levitation powers.

Atari VCS has 'several game studios lined up'

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 29, 2019 5:40 PM CST

The Atari VCS still sounds like an iffy gamble to me, but the company is clearly serious about making the product happen. Pre-production manufacturing is just about wrapping up and Atari gives an update on what's next.

Atari VCS has 'several game studios lined up'

In a big Atari VCS progress update, Chief Operating Officer Michael Arzt discusses the most important part of the new console: The games. Official details are still vague, and we don't know which big publishers or which games are coming to the Atari VCS. Arzt asserts that "several game studios" are secured for the console's launch but no details have been revealed so far. The console's innate compatibility with the Unity engine will favor games made with said engine tech.

Intel struggles continue to ryze: Samsung to help Intel make CPUs

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Nov 29, 2019 3:44 PM CST

Update: Just as I finished the story, my good friend Sai tweeted me and referred me to Wccftech's story that has an update from Intel -- where the company has commented, and debunked the story completely. Intel said: "The letter from last week says we will increase our use of foundry so we can build more CPUs at Intel. The news reports about our use of third party foundries for CPUs are inaccurate". Now I wonder if Intel will comment on the impending layoffs...

Intel struggles continue to ryze: Samsung to help Intel make CPUs

Oh how the tables have turned... AMD has gone from beyond being the underdog to the new champion, in what can only resemble the scene from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Superman throws Batman around like he's nothing -- in this case Intel is Superman and AMD is Batman, and says "Stay down, if I wanted it... you'd be dead already", to which Batman fires a Kryptonite-filled grenade at Superman which renders him to mere mortal powers. That was Intel, and now they're breathing in all that fear.

Intel must have thought it had AMD painted into a corner, but then AMD has made a comeback that will be in the history books, and it seems Intel's struggles will only continue. We all know they've been really stumbling over the 10nm node and it appears they're needing to call in some help from industry giant Samsung.

Twitter are testing conversation tree threads similar to Reddit

Jak Connor | Internet & Websites | Nov 29, 2019 1:35 AM CST

Twitter has rolled out a new way to have conversations via its testing app Twttr. This new format seems to take inspiration from Reddit.

Twitter are testing conversation tree threads similar to Reddit

The news has come from Jane Manchun Wong, an app researcher who prides herself on finding out new features that are coming to a range of different apps. Wong has managed to find conversation trees that were being tested in Twitter's beta testing app on the main website.

From the video, we can see that Twitter is testing nesting replies in each conversation and that users can select each Tweet to enlarge and hone in on it. This change Twitter is about to implement is set to roll out sometime in 2020, and will certainly give the platform a nice fresh feel. The layout is somewhat similar to that of Reddit's, but Twitter's seems much more sleek and straightforward. What do you think about the design change?

Darksiders Genesis' main character Strife splashes blood on his boots

Jak Connor | Gaming | Nov 29, 2019 12:31 AM CST

A new trailer has been released onto the official Darksiders YouTube Channel showcasing the new horseman, Strife, and his two guns.

Darksiders Genesis' main character Strife splashes blood on his boots

The video begins with Strife doing what he does best, shooting enemies, and spilling blood everywhere. Sometimes this blood, unfortunately, splashes onto his boots, but according to the video's description, this happens on a "pretty much constant basis". Strife is both impulsive and witty, making for a great comic relief type character that players will most likely get a refreshing feeling from.

In Darksiders Genesis, players will be able to choose between playing Strife or his brother War. Either way, players will be jumping into some sweet top-down co-op action that will pit Strife and War against countless enemies. As they carve their way through demons, monsters, and everything else in their path, they will be hunting down Lucifer. Darksiders Genesis will be releasing on PC and Stadia on December 5th. The Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch release is planned for February 14th, 2020. For more information about Darksiders Genesis, visit this article here.

All Xbox One games should be playable on Project Scarlett

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 28, 2019 9:13 PM CST

Microsoft has one simple goal with Project Scarlett's backward compatibility: If it's playable on Xbox One, they want it playable on Scarlett.

All Xbox One games should be playable on Project Scarlett

To preserve the Xbox legacy and massively boost value, Project Scarlett should play four generations' worth of Xbox games in 2020. The huge backward compatibility initiative stretches all the way back to the original Xbox. But what about forward compatibility, and will all third-party devs support it?

In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Xbox Studios head Matt Booty talked about cross-gen games development, backward compatibility, and is careful not to promise anything on behalf of third-party developers.

That insane Mad Box console probably won't happen

Remember that outlandish games console that Project Cars dev Slightly Mad Studios wanted to make? Yeah, don't expect it to happen.

That insane Mad Box console probably won't happen

Today Codemasters, the devs behind the F1 series of racing games, bought Project Cars developer Slightly Mad Studios. There was absolutely no mention of the weird and rather ridiculous Mad Box console in the announcement. Sources tell GamesIndustry.biz that Codemasters paid a $30 million fee upfront--$25 million in cash, and $5 million in stock.

After shelling out cash like that, Codemasters probably has absolutely no interest in pursuing the Mad Box console idea. It looks like Slightly Mad is going back to doing what it does best: Making racing games.

Sony patent turns shared videos into playable game demos

Sony's new scene-tagging patent basically creates labels for shared screenshots and videos on the PlayStation Network. But this shared media isn't just for watching: You can actually play them.

Sony patent turns shared videos into playable game demos

While scanning Sony's new scene tagging patent, I noticed something pretty interesting: Videos aren't just static, but contain small slices of interactive gameplay that viewers can start up and play. The patent isn't just for sharing screenshots and videos, but actually sharing that particular gameplay slice too.

It's a direct extension of the immensely ambitious game demo patent that lets you create and share game demos on the PlayStation Network.

Cyberpunk 2077 may support mods, tons of new info revealed

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 28, 2019 10:26 AM CST

CD Projekt RED wants to support mods for Cyberpunk 2077, and may release modding tools for its next-gen RED Engine similar to what it did with Witcher 3's Modkit.

Cyberpunk 2077 may support mods, tons of new info revealed

Cyberpunk 2077 could get official mod support in 2020 on PC (and maybe, just maybe, next-gen consoles?) to breathe new life into the game far after release. CD Projekt RED hasn't confirmed mods just yet, but at a recent gaming event in Warsaw, Poland they said it's something they want to do.

Before we get too excited, remember that CDPR's mod tools are usually quite limited. The Witcher 3's modding toolset only allowed modders to adjust settings and features like HUD indicators, difficulty modes, and altering quests. There wasn't any real direct way to add anything crazy.

Cyberpunk 2077 is shorter than Witcher 3, but more complexly layered

Cyberpunk 2077 is the biggest game CD Projekt RED has ever made, but it might actually be a bit shorter than The Witcher 3's main story.

Cyberpunk 2077 is shorter than Witcher 3, but more complexly layered

CD Projekt RED isn't going with raw size with Cyberpunk 2077, at least when compared to The Witcher 3. Instead it's going with more robust flavor, dynamism, and replayability. The devs confirmed not only is Cyberpunk 2077's Night City technically smaller than The Witcher 3's wide open world, the main experience might actually be shorter too (including all major quests and side quests).

At a recent community even in Warsaw, CD Projekt RED revealed a bunch of new details about Cyberpunk 2077, including the game's main story length. It might not be as big as The Witcher 3, but Cyberpunk 2077's quests are much more layered and less linear.

Cyberpunk 2077's fully mo-capped sex scenes should 'satisfy everyone'

CD Projekt Red is going to give Cyberpunk 2077 players the full sexual experience, with most of the sex scenes players encounter being first-person, and fully motion-capped.

Cyberpunk 2077's fully mo-capped sex scenes should 'satisfy everyone'

Back in early September it was discovered that CD Projekt Red really is caring about the immersion of Cyberpunk 2077, which is why all of the cut-scenes that players will encounter are in the first-person-perspective. This first-person-perspective view also goes for the game's sexual cut scenes.

During the Q&A event at the New Meta Gaming Bar in Warsaw, Poland, Cyberpunk 2077 developers answered some questions regarding the games cut scenes, saying that what CD Projekt Red has done should "satisfy everyone". Here's what they had to say, "About sex scenes: they did a lot of mo-cap for these, and they believe that their amount should satisfy everyone, which should calm down anyone who assumed that they will just skip those entirely just because the game is in first person."
