NASA has found something on Mars, we find out tomorrow

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Jun 6, 2018 8:23 AM CDT

Well... NASA has discovered something on Mars after 2054 days on the Red Planet, with the US space agency set to hold a press conference tomorrow to tell the world about their discovery.

NASA has found something on Mars, we find out tomorrow

NASA said in a statement when they announced the press conference: "The media and public are invited to ask questions during a live discussion at 2 p.m. EDT Thursday, June 7, on new science results from NASA's Mars Curiosity rover. The results are embargoed by the journal Science until then".

Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 850, ready for Windows PCs

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Jun 6, 2018 7:43 AM CDT

Computex 2018 - Qualcomm has announced its new Snapdragon 850 processor, a new chip that was specifically designed for Windows 10 Always Connected PCs, and has some nifty upgrades and improvements under the hood.

Qualcomm unveils Snapdragon 850, ready for Windows PCs

The new Snapdragon 850 will be exclusive to Windows 10 machine and will not be used in smartphones or tablets, even though it is a customized Snapdragon 845. We have a 30% performance improvement, 20% improved battery life, and 20% faster peak performance over the previous-gen Snapdragon 835, which is great.

It's built on the second-gen 10nm process, the same node that the Snapdragon 845 was made on, with the same X20 modem for LTE connectivity. Qualcomm has performed both hardware and software tuning to the Snapdragon 850 so that it will perform PC tasks better than the current Snapdragon 845.

AMD unveils the world's first GPU on 7nm at Computex 2018

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Jun 6, 2018 4:30 AM CDT

Computex 2018 - AMD is kicking all sorts of ass today with the announcements of its second-gen Threadripper CPUs rocking a huge 32C/64T of CPU power, the super-small Radeon RX Vega 56 Nano, and also the world's first GPU on 7nm - just like we said they would, last week.

AMD unveils the world's first GPU on 7nm at Computex 2018

AMD will have Vega on 7nm inside of the upcoming new Radeon Instinct part, which thanks to 7nm will feature 35% more performance over the previous-gen 14nm part, with twice the power efficiency that means it can do it all with under half the power consumption. Crazy stuff.

The density has been increased by 2x which means we can have smaller die sizes, or what I want - bigger GPUs. Bring it on, AMD. This now means AMD is ahead of the GPU game in one area, as even Volta is only on 12nm. It's good to see Team Red in their stride, and I can't wait to see what 7nm Radeon RX gaming cards can do.

AMD's next-gen Threadripper: 32C/64T on 12nm, due in Q3 2018

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Jun 6, 2018 3:43 AM CDT

Computex 2018 - AMD has just announced its new second-gen Threadripper CPU, and it is truly a monster that just so happens to be right around the corner.

AMD's next-gen Threadripper: 32C/64T on 12nm, due in Q3 2018

The new Threadripper arrives on the same socket as the original Threadripper, but doubles the core count to 32C/64T for some extreme megatasking. AMD is using the new 12nm node with the Zen+ architecture on the second-gen Threadripper, which beats out Intel's just-announced 28C/56T processor.

AMD's new Threadripper will be coming in 24C/48T and 32C/64T with the company showing off the new CPUs on air cooling here at Computex, which is very impressive. The new Threadripper CPUs will be launching in Q3 2018, so we don't have long to wait at all.

Destiny 2 Forsaken requires both previous expansions

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jun 5, 2018 6:09 PM CDT

Destiny 2 is getting some big changes, but if you're a new player be prepared to pay.

Destiny 2 Forsaken requires both previous expansions

Destiny 2's big new Forsaken expansion is changing the shape of the game in many, many ways: from core shake-ups like weapon loadout designations, mods and shaders to exciting new super abilities, the DLC aims to please the community. In many ways Forsaken resembles the original game's The Taken King mega-DLC that ultimately saved Destiny...but there's a catch. The $40 Forsaken expansion requires both the base game as well as the two previous expansion packs--Curse of Osiris and Warmind--to play. And it doesn't come with either.

This little tidbit wasn't explicitly mentioned on the game's website, nor was it mentioned on Activision's official press release. I spotted it on the cover art for the expansion itself, which reads "Destiny 2 game, Destiny 2 Expansions I & II required. Sold separately." What's even more eyebrow-raising is that Forsaken, an expansion to a live game, comes with its own $30 season pass that potentially brings your investment up to $69.99. The total investment for new players though is much higher. The Destiny 2 Expansion Pass is $34.99 regularly (on sale on PSN right now), the base game is $59.99 MSRP still (can be had for cheaper, let's say $30) and Forsaken is $40. That's a hefty bit of cash.

Destiny 2 DLC roadmap set to Summer 2019

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jun 5, 2018 4:17 PM CDT

Bungie has plotted Destiny 2's DLC roadmap well into next year.

Destiny 2 DLC roadmap set to Summer 2019

Today marks a big occasion for Destiny 2. Bungie finally announced Forsaken, the game's big The Taken King-style expansion, which brings a massive core systems overhaul while adding in new endgame content, weapons, supers, and more. And it seems this $40 expansion will be the new baseline for Destiny 2's future content rollouts.

Forsaken has an optional $30 Annual Pass attached to it that unlocks three "premium content releases" that will "deliver new experiences to Destiny 2: Forsaken, including activities, end game content, and an arsenal of powerful weapons, armor, and gear to earn." Assuming these bits of content are priced at $10 they may not be actual expansion-sized affairs but instead piecemeal modules of sorts that beef up Forsaken. Or they could indeed be bigger DLC akin to Bungie's original Comet idea (I'm betting they aren't, though, despite the Eververse raking in untold amounts of money via microtransactions).

Destiny 2 Forsaken lets you use three shotguns

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jun 5, 2018 3:19 PM CDT

Bungie and its partnered studios are doing some very interesting things with Destiny 2--including total weapon slot customization.

Destiny 2 Forsaken lets you use three shotguns

Today saw the big reveal of Destiny 2's year two Forsaken expansion that promises to evolve the shooter's core mechanics. One of these changes that Forsaken brings is allowing players to switch between Destiny 1's and Destiny 2's weapon slot designations (one primary, one special, and one heavy weapon style loadouts will return)...but there's also a third option. A crazy option. Forsaken will let you use three power weapons at once--well three shotguns, anyway. Probably not rocket launchers.

"Hey, if you like Destiny 2, great, play that way. If you like Destiny 1, great, play that way. But if you're crazy, why not three shotguns? Just for the fun of it," said Bungie's sandbox design lead Josh Hamrick.

Forsaken is Destiny 2's own The Taken King style expansion

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jun 5, 2018 12:30 PM CDT

With its new Year 2 expansion Bungie is directly responding to the clamoring frustrations of the Destiny 2 community.

Forsaken is Destiny 2's own The Taken King style expansion

The Forsaken expansion looks to do for Destiny 2 what The Taken King did for the original Destiny. Today Activision announced key details on the expansion including a brand new 4-player mode called Gambit that blurs PVE and PVE together alongside a host of promises of tweaks, super powers, weapons and armor, and overall improvements. It'll have a new bow weapon type and "nine additional supers" to boot.

Forsaken, which will retail for $40 versus the usual $19.99 stapled onto Destiny 2's expansions, will pack in two brand new destinations: The Tangled Shore and The Dreaming City. Guardians are sent across the lawless rims of the solar system to discover what exactly happened to The Reef, and then take down the nefarious 8 Barons. Endgame is a big focus in Forsaken. The Dreaming City was built from the ground up for advanced gamers and has its own raid and new bosses to take down.

ASUS ROG Swift PG65: 65-inch 4K 120Hz G-Sync TV is GLORIOUS

Anthony Garreffa | Displays | Jun 5, 2018 8:30 AM CDT

Computex 2018 - ASUS had more products being shown off, unveiled and teased at this year's Computex than ever before... including their new ROG Swift PG65.

ASUS ROG Swift PG65: 65-inch 4K 120Hz G-Sync TV is GLORIOUS

NVIDIA is behind the new push for living room dominance with their Big Format Gaming Displays (BFGDs) with the huge 65-inch panel rocking the glorious 4K resolution and even more glorious 120Hz refresh rate, with ultra-low latency thrown into the mix and an NVIDIA Shield built into the TV.

Funnily enough, Destiny 2 is the only game being shown off on it... so I need to spend some time with Overwatch, PUBG, and other games before I can pass judgement on it - until then... droooooool.

NVIDIA launching its next-gen GeForce GTX 1180 on July 30

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Jun 5, 2018 7:01 AM CDT

Computex 2018 - I disappointed so many people with my report that NVIDIA would unveil their next-gen GeForce GTX 1180 graphics cards during GTC 2018, and admit failure. I'll give each and every one of you a cuddle when I see you for the disappointment.

But walking across the floor of Nangang and talking to various industry people, NVIDIA will be launching their next-gen GeForce GTX 1180 graphic card on July 30. NVIDIA CEO and founder Jensen Huang said they were a while away during NVIDIA's Computex 2018 press conference, but of course he's going to say that.

July 30 isn't too far away, and while we were wrong about the GTC 2018 launch, my sources were very clear about July 30. I asked multiple people and more than one confirmed it was less than two months away, with July 30 specifically being mentioned by multiple of my sources.

COLORFUL GeForce GTX 1080 Ti KUDAN is a $1500 beast

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Jun 5, 2018 6:30 AM CDT

Computex 2018 - COLORFUL has had its GeForce GTX 1080 Ti KUDAN on the market for a while now, but we got a closer look at it once again at Computex 2018.

COLORFUL GeForce GTX 1080 Ti KUDAN is a $1500 beast

COLORFUL uses a hybrid cooler with a triple-fan design that will cool it out of the box without using the included waterblock if you want radically reduced temperatures and higher overclocks. GPU clock wise we have a base GPU clock of 1480MHz and boost of 1582MHz, while the 'One Key OC' button on the back of the card cranks those clocks up to 1657/1784MHz.

The usual 11GB of GDDR5X is clocked at 11Gbps, but there will be some OC wiggle room of course.

RIP Threadripper: Intel teases 28C/56T CPU at 5GHz

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Jun 5, 2018 5:19 AM CDT

Computex 2018 - Intel officially teased their new beast today at Computex 2018, with their new Cascade Lake-X HEDT processor coming 'at the end of this year'.

RIP Threadripper: Intel teases 28C/56T CPU at 5GHz

Intel's new beast is a huge 28C/56T processor that will compete with Threadripper 2 later this year from AMD, and ASUS was showing it off smashing through some amazing Cinebench results. During the Intel keynote, a GIGABYTE motherboard was used to run it at 5GHz. Intel said that this particular 28C/56T processor will be running at 5GHz, which is absolutely incredible.

Threadripper can't get close to 5GHz right now, so if Intel can get to the market with 28C/56T at 5GHz then AMD is going to be in for a bad time before Threadripper 2 is even unveiled. Wow, Intel... wow.

Lords of the Fallen 2 gets new developer

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jun 4, 2018 5:43 PM CDT

On the heels of Sniper Ghost Warrior 3's huge downfall, CI Games is now handing the development of Lords of the Fallen 2 off to a new dev.

Lords of the Fallen 2 gets new developer

Lords of the Fallen 2 is still happening, but it won't be directly made by the same team that made the predecessor. CI Games today announced that Defiant Studios, a private New York-based indie studio, will now handle the sequel. CI Games will instead publish the game and team up directly with Defiant to oversee creation and production of the Middle Age-based title. "The partnership demonstrates an important component of CI Games' new strategy - collaborating with strong external teams to deliver quality gaming experiences with the player in mind," the company said in a recent announcement.

Defiant Studios will have wide-spanning creative freedom on the sequel and has been handed the reins to the game's creation. While it shouldn't vary wildly from the first Lords of the Fallen, this chapter could have some surprises depending on the early concepts that were greenlit by CI Games.

ASUS ROG Phone: clip-on cooling, was built for PUBG

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Jun 4, 2018 10:45 AM CDT

Computex 2018 - ASUS held their Computex 2018 press conference with a huge unveiling of their new ROG Phone, the first smartphone ASUS has made for gaming... and it's all thanks to Fortnite and PUBG.

ASUS ROG Phone: clip-on cooling, was built for PUBG

ASUS has crammed in just about everything you can think of into the ROG Phone, going even as far as offering external cooling with a clip-on fan that connects ot the back of the phone for those long hours of gaming on-the-go, as well as an optional handheld dock that is very Nintendo Switch like.

Inside, we have Qualcomm's latest and greatest Snadragon 845 which is an 8-core CPU that has its clock speed boosted from its usual 2.8GHz up to 2.96GHz. The display itself is a 6-inch 2160 x 1080 AMOLED display with a faster 90Hz refresh rate, not quite 120Hz like Razer, but Razer uses a lesser quality LCD versus the AMOLED on the ASUS ROG Phone.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy gameplay spotted on Twitter

Jak Connor | Gaming | Jun 4, 2018 4:00 AM CDT

At the beginning of April we saw the rumor that Spyro Reignited Trilogy is on its way to the Nintendo Switch, since then we haven't really heard much about the purple dragon, now the title has had some gameplay released on the "Spyro" Twitter page.

The gameplay that has been released is only a short display of footage and from a title that is currently in development it seems Spyro Reignited Trilogy is shaping up to be quite promising. We can see Spyro frolicking around and dashing through enemies, he also chases down some sheep only to eventually turn them to ash with his fire.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy is planned for released on September 21 this year and will be going for a price of just $39.99. The title will be released on the PS4 and Xbox One, currently there has been no official announcement for a port to the PC or the Nintendo Switch but we could see one at E3.
