CDPR talks about how Cyberpunk 2077 will use RTX features at Gamescom

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 19, 2019 10:20 PM CDT

NVIDIA talked with CD PROJEKT RED about Cyberpunk 2077 in a little more detail at Gamescom 2019, with Cyberpunk 2077's Lead Quest Designer, Pawel Sasko, talking all things Cyberpunk in the video below:

CDPR talks about how Cyberpunk 2077 will use RTX features at Gamescom

The video goes for over 3 minutes, with the RTX portion of the video only a tiny portion which is unfortunate. I would've loved to have seen more RTX-powered footage of Cyberpunk 2077, but I guess we'll have to wait a little while longer.

The footage CDPR showed off at E3 2019 to the VIP guests in their suite (of which I was privy to see) looked great without RTX enabled, but I would like to see much more RTX-powered gameplay footage of Cyberpunk 2027, and ASAP. Maybe we'll see something new at PAX West which is August 30 through to September 2, cybernetic fingers are crossed for that.

Cerebras Systems has largest chip EVER with 1.2 TRILLION transistors

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Aug 19, 2019 9:50 PM CDT

Cerebras Systems just unveiled the largest chip ever at Hot Chips 31, which is a A Symposium on High Performance Chips hosted yearly with the biggest companies in the tech space involved.

Cerebras Systems has largest chip EVER with 1.2 TRILLION transistors

The new Cerebras Wafer Scale Engine chip from Cerebras has a huge 1.2 trillion (1,200,000,000,000) transistors compared to the largest GPU in NVIDIA's GV100 and its 21.1 billion (21,100,000,000). NVIDIA requires just 815 square millimeters of die space for its GV100 and 21.1 billion transistors, while Cerebras Systems requires a huge 46,225 square millimeters of silicon.

Cerebras' new chip is so big that in comparison photos, the company compares its new 1.2T transistor chip side-by-side with a freaking keyboard. Yes, this new chip is as big as a desktop keyboard.

NVIDIA reveals ray tracing powered Control trailer at Gamescom 2019

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 19, 2019 9:26 PM CDT

NVIDIA went on an RTX rampage at Gamescom 2019 with the company unveiling a bunch of new real-time ray tracing infused game trailers like Minecraft with RTX, Watch Dogs: Legion getting RTX -- and the first fully loaded RTX game: Control.

NVIDIA reveals ray tracing powered Control trailer at Gamescom 2019

The new trailer above is from Gamescom 2019 which has kicked off in Cologne, Germany and comes in at just under 1 minute. There's not much more to say about Control if you haven't looked into it already, but it's from developer Remedy Entertainment that made one of my favorite games; Max Payne as well as Alan Wake and Quantum Break.

Control runs on the latest version of Remedy's in-house Northlight engine, with the full set of RTX real-time ray tracing features. It looks great in-person, with my hands-on time with it at E3 2019 leaving me wanting more -- I now have it here on my PC but can't talk about it just yet. All I can say is it sure does look great and I can't wait to sink my teeth deeper into Control.

Alienware's new Aurura R9 desktop looks like it's from another world

Anthony Garreffa | Computer Systems | Aug 19, 2019 8:16 PM CDT

Alienware has just unveiled its new Aurora R9 desktop today with a super-sleek, rounded aesthetic that looks out of this world. The new look is part of an extension to Alienware's "Legend" design that started earlier this year with the Area-51m.

Alienware's new Aurura R9 desktop looks like it's from another world

With the Aurora R9 desktop PC, we have an awesome-looking system that doesn't look too crazy, but it definitely stands out. The entire front is curved, and looks like a Dyson bladeless fan, except there's a hardcore gaming PC inside of it. It can be specced pretty high, up to the RTX 2080 Ti and 64GB RAM.

Alienware says that it built the new Aurora R9 with improved airflow in mind, so the new rig has been built with less obstruction than the previous design meaning airflow increases leading to cooler temps. Alienware says these changes have reduced temps by 8% which is not bad at all.

The Vex are coming in Destiny 2 Shadowkeep's Season of the Undying

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 19, 2019 5:59 PM CDT

Gamescom 2019 - Bungie today announced Season of the Undying, the first season for Destiny 2's big new Shadowkeep expansion.

The Vex are coming in Destiny 2 Shadowkeep's Season of the Undying

Soon Destiny 2's new $35 Shadowkeep expansion will be the gateway to all future seasonal content. Shadowkeep's first seasonal event, Season of the Undying (technically Destiny 2's Season 8) is centered around the time-travelling Vex, but no other official details have been confirmed. The new trailer is cryptic and mysterious in pure Bungie, offering intriguing glimpses of lore and content we can expect from the season.

"We say the Black Garden is the birthplace of the Vex. But it was not the beginning. It was the reason. The life in the Garden called out a question. The Vex are the answer. They will do anything to protect the Garden. In these things there is symmetry. The gateways have opened. The Vex are coming. The Garden of Salvation is only the beginning."

PS4 gets exclusive Modern Warfare 2v2 alpha access

Gamescom 2019 - PS4 gamers will get to try out Modern Wafare's new fast-paced 2v2 Gunfight mode in an exclusive alpha test.

PS4 gets exclusive Modern Warfare 2v2 alpha access

The new Modern Warfare alpha test is set to begin this Friday, August 23, will be free for all PS4 gamers worldwide, and stars Infinity Ward's new chaotic Gunfight mode. Gunfight is 2v2 team-based deathmatch with strong emphasis on frenetic action and twitch reflexes, and takes place across five small-sized maps: Stack, King, Speedball, Docks, and Pine. Infinity Ward will use the alpha test to gather valuable network feedback.

As for the rest of the game, Infinity Ward shared some more details on what Modern Warfare will offer when it drops on October 25, especially when it comes to multiplayer. "Our overall goal for MP this year was to create the ultimate multiplayer playground. So we've got all sorts of shapes and sizes of experiences, we've got our smaller, tighter and faster 2v2 maps, we've got our more traditional 6v6 maps, and we've also got experiences on our larger-scale maps that're going to support upwards of 100 players," said Infinity Ward producer Dino Verano.

Death Stranding's fetus tank babies explained

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 19, 2019 4:56 PM CDT

Gamescom 2019 - Death Stranding's cryptic Bridge Babies get decoded in a new character story trailer.

Death Stranding's fetus tank babies explained

Today Hideo Kojima brought lots of Death Stranding tidbits and footage to Gamescom, including magical pee and more backstory on the game's mysterious fetus baby-tanks. The so-called Bridge Babies are essential to the game's plot, and are essentially the keys to the doorway between the living and dead worlds.

The BB's, or Bridge Babies, are kind of like batteries. They power Sam's sensors to detect the shadowy BT monsters, and like batteries, they have to be recharged...in their mother's womb. Every BB has a "still-mother" that's brain dead, and the BB's periodically have to be returned to their mother's womb in the United Cities of America's capital citadel. The pods are a simulation of the still-mother's womb, but they're not perfect, and Sam has to frequently sync the pod to the Chiral Network (the main framework that ties players to the world).

Fry's Electronics stores soon to close, seeing same fate as Toys'R'Us?

Rob Squires | Business, Financial & Legal | Aug 19, 2019 4:18 PM CDT

Since 1985, Fry's Electronics, a brick and mortar Silicon Valley headquartered electronics chain, was the go-to place for DIY system builders. The stores founded by John Fry were modeled like grocery retailing, but to sell computer and electronics supplies. Fry's Electronics, like most brick and mortar stores these days is having a tough time due to fierce online retailer competition. It seems that they may be closer than ever to facing the fate of other brick and mortar retail chains, like Toys"R"Us, K-Mart, and Sears.

Fry's Electronics stores soon to close, seeing same fate as Toys'R'Us?

Over the last two years, we have observed significant gaps in their product stock, and over the last six to twelve months entire product lines missing for extended periods of time. Examples include the OEM versions Microsoft Windows 10, internal hard drives, or motherboards which most stores have not had in stock consistently for the last six months. One thing we have heard across multiple stores from employees is that sales have been struggling. Our own visits to the stores have shown entire isles which used to be well stocked, completely devoid of any products.

Over the last few days, two videos have surfaced which you can watch here and here. These videos show a similar situation of product stock in the Arizona based locations.

Death Stranding has magical pee that changes the in-game world

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 19, 2019 3:44 PM CDT

Gamescom 2019 - Peeing is a big part of Death Stranding. I didn't think I'd ever type that, but there it is. At Gamescom 2019's Opening Night Live, Hideo Kojima managed to make his new game even weirder.

Death Stranding has magical pee that changes the in-game world

We know a lot about Death Stranding now. It's an open-world game with a bizarre storyline about a plane of shadow monsters that intermingle with the real-world, and has a distinct emphasis on connecting gamers. But it's also about changing the world. One of the ways you'll be able to do this is by peeing everywhere you go.

And if enough people pee in the same spot, something good will happen. No, really.

Arnold Schwarzenegger would be proud of the new PvPvE Predator game

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 19, 2019 3:08 PM CDT

Gamescom 2019 - Illfonic is making a new Predator game that perfectly captures the suspenseful, clastrophobic chaos of the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film.

Arnold Schwarzenegger would be proud of the new PvPvE Predator game

Predator: Hunting Grounds looks to be the ultimate Predator game. It's essentially Friday the 13th but with a different setting, skin, and action-based FPS chaos. Set in the legendary Fox franchise, and follows a simple premise: four elite Army Rangers who go into the jungle and encounter the universe's perfect hunter, and get picked off one by one.

The new Predator game isn't narrative-focused though, not really. It's a PVPVE online multiplayer game where a team of four go up against the Predator and its interstellar arsenal complete with active camo, heat vision, and pulse cannons. The Rangers complete missions and take on other human rebels in firefights, all while being hunted by the Predator. The Rangers see through a first-person shooter view complete with crosshairs and HUD indicators, but the Predator can switch between third-person and first-person

Sony buys Insomniac Games in major first-party acquisition

Gamescom 2019 - Insomniac Games will now be part of Sony's first-party development stable, the PS4-maker today announced.

Sony buys Insomniac Games in major first-party acquisition

In an effort to bolster its first-party games lineup for the incoming PlayStation 5 console, Sony is buying Insomniac Games, one of the most talented developers in the industry. The deal, which sees Sony buying out Insomniac for an undisclosed sum, comes after Insomniac's blowaway success with the PS4-exclusive Spider-Man game.

Sony's announcement confirms Insomniac will continue focusing on story-driven exclusive games for the PlayStation platform. We could even see a Spider-Man sequel for PS5, complete with full high-end optimization of the next-gen platform. Under Sony's Worldwide Studios label, Insomniac joins other top-tier studios like Sony Santa Monica (God of War), Sony Bend (Days Gone), Sucker Punch (Ghosts of Tsushima), and Naughty Dog (Uncharted, The Last of Us Part 2).

Halo Reach dev's new game Disintegration is a squad-based strategy FPS

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 19, 2019 2:16 PM CDT

Gamescom 2019 - Halo creator Marcus Lehto is making a new game with his new studio V1 Interactive, and it looks promising.

Halo Reach dev's new game Disintegration is a squad-based strategy FPS

Disintegration is a passion project from ex-Halo developer Marcus Lehto, who's leveraging a star-studded team of 30+ AAA vets to create a new shooter. At its core, Disintegration is more of a vehicular-based strategy game rather than a boots-on-the-ground action game like Halo. You're floating around in a kind of sparrow with tons of guns, blasting enemies and ordering a squad of teammates around the battlefield.

Lehto says Disintegration is a brand new concept that gamers haven't really experienced yet. "It's a game pretty much unlike anything you've ever played before," said V1's Marcus Lehto. "We have a full singleplayer story campaign as well as a huge multiplayer component to it. It's a first-person shooter with a lot of real-time tactics elements blended in."

PUBG cross-play coming to PS4, Xbox One

PUBG cross-play coming to PS4, Xbox One

PUBG is the latest huge online juggernaut to smash down the cross-platform barriers. With Sony's blessing, PUBG Corp will enable both PS4 and Xbox One gamers to play together in PUBG matchmaking.

"Our main goal with cross-network play is to improve matchmaking times, which we expect to be shorter for all console players thanks to the wider network pool. You'll be able to identify players from either Xbox One or PS4 through the UI, including kill feed, death box, and while spectating," said console producer Koosung Jeong.

Gears of War 5 is the 'best Gears game we've ever made'

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 19, 2019 1:18 PM CDT

Gamescom 2019 - After months of waiting, The Coalition showcases Gears of War 5's campaign footage.

Gears of War 5 is the 'best Gears game we've ever made'

Gears 5 is coming out in a month and Microsoft has waited a long time to show off the campaign...but the wait ended today with a new story trailer. According to Rod Ferguson, Gears of War 5's campaign is the best they've ever done. It technically tells two stories at once, but the same dire drama, visceral gameplay, and explosively chaotic action will be in, all at 4K resolution at 60FPS. It'll be an intimate story that uncovers the secrets of Kait Diaz's true power, culminating in a soul-searching exodus with tons of brutal and visceral carnage.

The footage shows some interesting tidbits including mechs, ice-surfing, and a cerebral psychological scope not really seen in previous games.

Cyberpunk 2077 can be played without a console or PC

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 19, 2019 12:44 PM CDT

Gamescom 2019 - Cyberpunk 2077 is coming to Google's new Stadia game-streaming platform, solidifying a major win for the storefront.

Cyberpunk 2077 can be played without a console or PC

Thanks to Stadia, gamers will be able to play CD Projekt RED's new high-tech masterpiece without owning a console or a PC. The single-player driven RPG shooter will be a major part of Stadia's 2020 presence, and could be available in time for the free version of the service (Stadia has a $10-a-month Pro tier that's launching in 2019, and a free base version that's coming in 2020).

Given Cyberpunk 2077's massive breadth, scope, and immersive capabilities thanks to its living, breathing world and real-time AI, I'm dubious how it'll perform on Stadia. Remember Stadia is limited by your bandwidth and you'll need a pretty potent connection to play at 1080p 60FPS, let alone 4K with HDR enabled.

Intellivision's new Amico console coming in 2020, has new Ecco game

Gamescom 2019 - Intellivision's new Amico might be doomed, or it might find a low-cost social gaming niche that isn't really available today.

Intellivision's new Amico console coming in 2020, has new Ecco game

It's been 40 years since Intellivision launched its pioneering games console. Now they're back in the game with the Intellivision Amico, a curious low-cost console aimed not at hardcore gamers, but more social and casual gamers. The Amico is more like an Ouya that delivers family-friendly arcade-style experiences rather than AAA blockbusters like the PS4 or Xbox One. At Gamescom 2019, Intellivision revealed a new Amico trailer that desperately tries to make the system look cool while company head Tommy Tallarico discussed key features.

"Our whole idea is to bring people together. Put them in the same room, having fun, communicating, bringing back that kind of game night. Playing games and having fun, no matter what skill level you are. That's the magic that we want to bring back with the Intellivision Amico," Tallarico said.

HyperX reveals $130 Cloud Alpha S headset with 7.1 surround sound

Gamescom 2019 - HyperX just revealed its new $130 Cloud Alpha headset that rocks virtual 7.1 surround sound for more immersive gaming and entertainment experiences.

HyperX reveals $130 Cloud Alpha S headset with 7.1 surround sound

HyperX's new Cloud Alpha S resembles the original Alpha design, which in itself is basically akin to the excellent HyperX Cloud II model. It's a wired headset that features dual-chamber tech for more realistic sounds across multiple frequencies, but the main selling point is the virtual 7.1 surround sound coupled with some nifty additions like on-the-fly base adjustment sliders.

Like the former model, the Cloud Alpha S sports a built-in mic with noise-cancelling tech and a comfortable design, complete with foam ear cups. It also sports an external sound card box just like the Cloud II, and can detach to plug directly into devices like mobile phones.

Macabre Metroidvania indie Blasphemous releases next month

The Game Kitchen's brutal and bloody Metroidvania masterpiece Blasphemous will release September 10, the studio today announced.

Macabre Metroidvania indie Blasphemous releases next month

We need more games like Blasphemous out there. The project is absolutely grim and grotesque, featuring intense gore (intestines, shocking imagery, you name it) and gothic themes straight out of Francisco Goya's nightmares. At it's core, Blasphemous is a pixellated side-scroller that merges the tough-as-nails bossfights from Dark Souls with the adept combat of Castlevania, complete with Metroid-style exploration.

On one hand it's like stepping into a death metal cover album. On the other, it's like a Genesis game from the dark parallel universe that Pinhead calls home--it's definitely something the cenobites play in their free time. I for one can't wait to try it out...it looks like a bloody good time.

One of the coolest thi ngs that the TESLASUIT can do is simulate both hot and cold temperatures, which would be a game changer for gaming. It would take VR gaming in a totally new direction, and unlock thousands of applications and add oodles more immersion to any VR and AR experience.

TESLASUIT will also capture both motion and biometrics, with the suit providing users with "sensation and a sense of touch in virtual and augmented reality, including heavy and light impacts, rain, or wind-blowing. TESLASUIT integrated biometric system gathers real-time data from users which can be used to relay emotional state, stress level, and key health indicators. This enables interactive VR/AR content that adapts to the user for personalized experiences".
