Micron Outs In-House High Performance NVMe SSD Controller

Chris Ramseyer | Storage | Aug 16, 2018 4:45 AM CDT

Flash Memory Summit 2018 - In 2015, Micron purchased a start-up SSD controller company called Tidal Systems, Inc. Tidal was on the verge of announcing IP and products when Micron purchased the company and all of its assets. Since then, Tidal Systems disappeared, and so did the products it was working on. At FMS 2018, Micron displayed a next-generation SSD with a Micron-branded controller. A company representative went off the record to confirm this is the long awaited Tidal NVMe controller.

Micron Outs In-House High Performance NVMe SSD Controller

Everything we could gather on the client SSD can be seen in the video. The display show two unannounced products, the first with a Marvell SATA controller paired with QLC flash. The middle product, the one with the Micron branded controller, is more interesting.

The display leads us to believe Micron will release the unnamed NVMe SSD to OEMs for high-performance systems. It supports user mode encryption and appears to be an 8-channel architecture with support for DDR4. The screen makes it difficult to see more than the broad strokes.

Silicon Motion Details SM2270 Enterprise SSD Controller

Chris Ramseyer | Storage | Aug 16, 2018 4:15 AM CDT

Flash Memory Summit 2018 - After ravaging the consumer SSD market for the last two years, Silicon Motion took the wraps off its first enterprise-focused controller.

Silicon Motion Details SM2270 Enterprise SSD Controller

The SM2270 will initially ship in enterprise SSDs from subsidiary Shannon Systems. SMI will likely have a number of additional design wins. Most of the companies we speak with on the consumer SSD side praise SMI for exceptional customer service and responsive field engineers that help bring products to market.

The SM2270 supports up to PCIe 3.0 x8 and started out as a design for add-in cards (AIC). Changes in market conditions pushed SMI to move the design to 2.5" products with dual-mode compatibility. We may see the SM2270 used in both AIC and 2.5" products.

Dr. Strange/Avengers buildings spotted in Spider-Man trailer

Jak Connor | Gaming | Aug 16, 2018 3:00 AM CDT

Insomniac Games' Spider-Man title for the PS4 is moving closer and closer to its release date and the hype is no where near slowing down. To add to that snowball of hype, a new trailer has been released via the IGN YouTube Channel and it reveals some most notable structures from the Marvel universe.

Dr. Strange/Avengers buildings spotted in Spider-Man trailer

The trailer has been titled New York City Open-World trailer and showcases Spidy flinging around his concrete jungle playground and it looks absolutely incredible. The trailer is narrated by J. Jonah Jameson and Jameson is throwing the blame for the cities crimes on Spider-Man, Peter Parker then calls into the station under the allias Peter Patterson to defend him. Jameson continues and we can see from the trailer that these 'swan dives' that are mentioned are in front of the Avengers Tower.

Not only was the Avengers Tower spotted within the trailer but so was the Dr. Strange building. That is right, the Sanctum Santorum can be seen at exactly 0.40 seconds into the video. It is unclear what kind of interaction players will be able to do with Stranges building, but at least it can be confirmed that it is in the game. Marvel's Spider-Man will be releasing exclusively on the PlayStation 4 on September 7th.

Metro Exodus Aurora Limited Edition announced

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 16, 2018 12:27 AM CDT

Metro Exodus is one of the most-anticipated games of 2019, with developer 4A Games and publisher Deep Silver not only releasing a new trailer for Metro Exodus today, but they also announced pre-order bonuses and a new special limited edition version of the game.

Metro Exodus Aurora Limited Edition announced

The new bundle is called the Aurora Limited Edition, which should be released to only a few retailers. The Metro Exodus Aurora Limited Edition comes with a bunch of physical stuff, not just in-game DLC or bonuses. It'll include:

I don't know why, but Deep Silver didn't announce any pricing for the Aurora Limited Edition - which is silly IMO. We know that Metro Exodus Standard Edition costs $60 while the Gold Edition comes in at $85. There are some pre-order bonuses for all three platforms: Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Even if you order the standard release of Metro Exodus but pre-order it now, you'll receive the bonuses.

NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 2080 rumored to cost $649

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 15, 2018 10:18 PM CDT

NVIDIA is expected to announce its new GeForce RTX range of graphics cards during Gamescom 2018 next week, with all signs pointing to the RTX 20 series unveil taking place on August 20 in Cologne, Germany.

NVIDIA's new GeForce RTX 2080 rumored to cost $649

VideoCardz is reporting information from a member of the Baidu forums who claims to "have a lot of information from a board partner". This source said that the Turing-based GeForce RTX 2080 would cost $649, but not only that it would beat the TITAN V... a graphics card that costs a whopping $3000. TITAN V is based on the Volta GPU architecture and packs HBM2 memory technology, compared to the RTX 2080 with its Turing GPU architecture and GDDR6 tech.

The purported GeForce RTX 2080 would feature 3072 CUDA cores from the Turing GPU architecture, 8GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit memory bus. We don't know GPU base/boost clocks and I'm sure we'll see a large change to the way it works with tweaks made to NVIDIA GPU Boost technology. We don't know what speeds the GDDR6 will be clocked at, but we do know Samsung is providing its GDDR6 at up to 14Gbps.

Battlefield V pre-order sales 'weak', as ex-DICE boss leaves

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 15, 2018 9:30 PM CDT

EA isn't sitting in a good spot with Battlefield V with the company starting off on the wrong foot with angered gamers over some of the choices they made within the setting of the game, to say the least. Now there's news of pre-order numbers being low, and that's not good at all.

Battlefield V pre-order sales 'weak', as ex-DICE boss leaves

The company recently lost Patrick Soderlund, who was the ex-CEO of DICE until EA acquired the company back in 2006. Soderlund had high-up roles within EA after the transition, and is now leaving the company.

Now there's Sarah Needleman of the Wall Street Journal reporting that Cowen Group analysts have that that pre-order sales for Battlefield V "have been weak". These analysts are going by things said to them by EA connections, and if we look at someone as instrumental as Soderlund leaving EA two months before the launch of Battlefield V, one of EA's largest franchises... this does look weird.

Intel holds firm to 2020 for discrete GPU

Rob Squires | Graphics Cards | Aug 15, 2018 9:00 PM CDT

Intel has released a short video at Siggraph 2018 this week in Vancouver teasing about their upcoming discrete GPU in 2020. The newly installed Intel discrete graphics boss, Raja Koduri, has been spotted roaming around Vancouver this week as well. The Twitter post by Intel can be found here.

Intel holds firm to 2020 for discrete GPU

The image of the card in the video has been confirmed to us by Intel as a rendering and not an actual product image. Intel made no formal presentations this year at Siggraph in Vancouver about their upcoming plans, although we are expecting more information to begin appearing in 2019.

Raja Koduri joined Intel late in 2017 as we reported here. Earlier this year Chris Hook of AMD and ATI fame, as well Tom Forsyth joined the expanding Intel discrete graphics team.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti: monster card with 11GB GDDR6

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 15, 2018 8:34 PM CDT

NVIDIA should be announcing its next-gen GeForce RTX series of graphics cards on August 20, with more details, speculation and rumor being thrown onto the internet than ever before.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti: monster card with 11GB GDDR6

We're now seeing some detailed specifications on not just the forthcoming GeForce RTX 2070 and RTX 2080 but the higher-end RTX 2080 Ti that should truly blow the doors off of everything else on the market. The current rumors peg the RTX 2080 at beating the TITAN V, and considering that's a Volta-based HBM2-powered $3000 graphics card, those claims are beyond imagination.

We should expect NVIDIA to release a beefed up GeForce RTX 2080 Ti if the naming scheme stays the same as the GTX 10 series (GTX 1070, 1080, 1080 Ti) and from the current crop of information, it will be an utter beast. If the GeForce RTX 2080 is beating the TITAN V, then the RTX 2080 Ti would be truly insane. It should have 11GB of GDDR6 on a 352-bit memory bus (the GTX 1080 Ti has 11GB of GDDR5X on a 352-bit memory bus).

THQ Nordic has 34 unannounced projects in development

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 15, 2018 7:15 PM CDT

On the heels of its recent Timesplitters acquisition, THQ Nordic confirms a rather robust lineup of in-development games.

THQ Nordic has 34 unannounced projects in development

THQ Nordic currently has 51 projects in the works, the company announced in today's Q2 financial results. This fifty-strong slate is the company's "strongest pipeline to date," the filings say, the majority of which are unannounced games. The publisher says 34 of its 51 games are unannounced titles.

However all of the projects may not be top-tier games from key franchises, and instead may include partner titles, third-party-owned games, and licensed projects. Renown studios like Saints Row dev Volition Entertainment and Dambuster Studios are both developing "top secret" AAA titles, the report says, and the company recently issued new shares in a bid to raise funds for game development, acquisitions, and operations.

After the delays of Dark Souls Remastered debuting to the Nintendo Switch, news has surfaced on the official Dark Souls Twitter account, we now have a solid release date for when the game will be released.

Dark Souls Remastered arrives on the Nintendo Switch Oct 19

Dark Souls Remastered was originally planned for release alongside the other iterations of the game back in May, since then Bandai Namco has been awfully quite about the Nintendo Switch version of the game being delayed for so long. Unfortunately, there hasn't even been any details provided to explain why there has been such a hefty delay on the handheld version of the game.

The Nintendo Switch version of the game will still release with the 'Solaire of Astora' amiibo, which when used will unlock the "Praise the Sun" emote within the game. About a week a go, there was an email sent out by Amazon to some people who pre-ordered Dark Souls Remastered for the Nintendo Switch, it revealed that the release date for the title was meant to be October 1st, that rumor has now been cleared up with the official announcement by Nintendo and the Dark Souls Twitter account. Dark Souls Remastered for the Nintendo Switch is scheduled for release on October 19th, for further information visit the official Dark Souls website here.
