Witcher 3 GOTY listed & rumored for September Switch release

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 28, 2019 3:00 AM CDT

As a Nintendo Switch owner, I can solidly say that having The Witcher 3 available in hand-held mode would truly be an awesome luxury. Is it possible that this luxury could be an actuality?

Witcher 3 GOTY listed & rumored for September Switch release

In Asia, multiple video game retailers have listed The Witcher 3: Game of the Year Edition for the Nintendo Switch. The retailers -according to the translation - say that the Game of the Year Edition will be released sometime in September. While these are just rumors at this point, it is very interesting that multiple retailers have the same listing.

Before fans of the Witcher series scream that there is no way the Nintendo Switch can handle such a massive world, perhaps consider that CD Projekt RED could implement the title as streamable version. Much like the Resident Evil 7 Nintendo Switch version, or Assassin's Creed Odyssey. As always with posts like these, please take the information as non-official as no official statements have been made from the developers or Nintendo.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate version 3.1.0 releases this week

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 28, 2019 2:00 AM CDT

Nintendo has announced that its time to update Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, this patch will bring the version of the game up to 3.1.0.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate version 3.1.0 releases this week

The announcement has been released onto the Nintendo Versus Twitter account, and says that the patch will be rolled out sometime later this week and include "fighter adjustments". It is unclear what these "fighter adjustments" will be and which fighters will be the ones to be adjusted, but I'm sure Nintendo will release patch notes alongside the update when it debuts.

As with previous Smash Bros. Ultimate patches, Nintendo has warned players to save all of their replay data into video format before they update their game. As the update will remove all replay data that hasn't been converted into video format and it will not be retrievable. To do this follow these instructions; Vault -> Replays -> Replay Data -> Convert to Video. When the patch has been released I will be sure to do a follow up post with the changes that have been made. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is exclusively available on the Nintendo Switch.

Sora confirmed to NOT debut to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 28, 2019 1:00 AM CDT

Most Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players are very curious to find out who the next mystery DLC fighter will be, recent news has taken one big name off the table of possibilities. Say goodbye to Sora coming to Smash Bros Ultimate.

Sora confirmed to NOT debut to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

The rumors of a Square Enix representative coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate string all the way back to before Smash Ultimate was even released. Most rumors and leaks that were coming out said that Sora from the Kingdom Hearts series would be the one to take the lime light, recent news has unfortunately confirmed that this won't be the case.

The news has come from a recent interview with Shiniji Hashimoto, who is a Producer and brand manager of the Kingdom Hearts series and Final Fantasy series at Square Enix. A student going by the Twitter handle 'Forest' has posted an image with Hashimoto to his personal Twitter, along with the caption "Today I was able to meet Shinji Hashimoto, Vice President and producer of Square Enix (notably FF and KH) at a Conference at my future school #Genimage, it was great. I took a lot of notes. PS: he was asked the question and not, Sora is not foreseen in SSBU."

HyperX debuts new key switches in Alloy Origins RGB keyboard

Derek Strickland | Peripherals | May 27, 2019 7:34 PM CDT

Computex 2019 - HyperX today announced the Alloy Origins mechanical keyboard, the first to use the company's new self-made red key switches.

HyperX debuts new key switches in Alloy Origins RGB keyboard

HyperX amps up its Alloy line of gaming peripherals with the Alloy Origins, a full-sized RGB-infused mechanical keyboard aimed at delivering performance with style. While the Alloy Origins looks similar to other keyboards in the Alloy banner, it's actually what's inside that makes it unique.

The new keyboard is the first to leverage HyperX's new proprietary red key switches that're durable and agile. The switches have a 1.8mm actuation point and 3.8mm travel distance, meaning they'll have lower resistance than Cherry MX Blue or Black switches. The actuation point is at 45g, so the Alloy Origins' keys won't take much force to press. HyperX's new switches are also rated for 80 million presses, which puts them high above most switches on the market and closest to Razer's own self-made key switches insofar as durability.

New The Last of Us 2 trailer coming soon, possibly May 29

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 27, 2019 5:16 PM CDT

Naughty Dog is finishing up The Last of Us Part II for a possible 2019 release, and now sources say we'll be seeing more grisly action soon.

New The Last of Us 2 trailer coming soon, possibly May 29

A new trailer for The Last of Us Part II will release sometime this week, inside sources tell Spanish website Legion de Juegos. As for timing, we expect it to be quite soon. Sony confirmed a new new Death Stranding trailer for May 29 and we expect The Last of Us Part II to be included. It's possible Sony will have a surprise digital showcase with new footage and release dates for both games.

Sony's not attending E3 2019 this year, and has yet to announce a PlayStation-centric show outside of E3, so it's likely eager to get a leg up on Microsoft's massive announcement salvo.

Ubisoft planning its own games subscription service

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 27, 2019 3:59 PM CDT

Ubisoft may reveal a new games subscription service at its big E3 2019 showcase this year.

Ubisoft planning its own games subscription service

According to a recent placeholder on the Ubisoft Store, the publisher is readying something called Ubisoft Pass Premium, which sounds a lot like a subscription service. No details have been confirmed and the placeholder is now gone, but it's possible Ubisoft's service will be an all-you-can-play offering like Xbox Game Pass or EA Access. It's also possible Ubisoft's new games could launch simultaneously on the service similar to Game Pass and EA Origin Premiere to further fragment the digital landscape. Whether or not Ubisoft Pass is a game streaming platform similar to Google's Stadia or Microsoft's Project xCloud remains to be seen. Given the current nascent streaming market we're betting Ubi Pass is the publisher's own answer to Game Pass.

A new subscription fits perfectly with Ubisoft's digital-first strategy, and the company even promised investors it'll explore streaming opportunities and new digital models. Ubisoft has made a tremendous transformation thanks to digital gaming and consistently makes billions every year from online content--it made $1.56 billion from digital last year.

What Death Stranding's 'create the rope' actually means

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 27, 2019 10:44 AM CDT

Hideo Kojima released a new Death Stranding teaser calling for gamers to "create the rope." As confusing as it sounds, the phrase is quite philosophical and is the backbone of the game's core tenants.

What Death Stranding's 'create the rope' actually means

Death Stranding was directly inspired by Kojima's breakup with Konami. After Konami fired him and scrubbed his name from Metal Gear Solid, Hideo Kojima felt lost. His future was still in games, but he didn't have anything--no studio, no publisher, no team, no tools. But he had his human connections that he built up over years of games development. Leveraging these contacts, Kojima built a new studio, partnered with Sony, and found a star-studded cast. People believed in him even when he thought it was all over.

This is really the heart of Death Stranding: human connections. The game's create the rope tagline is a direct reference to the concept of gamers tethering themselves to other people and fostering these connections. In an old interview from 2016, Kojima explains where this idea came from: "There's a Japanese author I am a huge fan of called Kobo Abe. He has a short novel called 'Rope' in which he makes a definition, a statement: the first tool mankind made was a stick. It was made to keep away bad things. It's a weapon. The next tool created by mankind was rope. The rope is not to keep away bad things. On the contrary, it's a tool used to keep good things close to you, to tie good things close to you."

12 minutes of rare behind the scenes Mortal Kombat 1 footage

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 27, 2019 4:00 AM CDT

If you are a longtime Mortal Kombat fan and have been following the series since the release of the original game back in 1992, then the below footage is something you are likely to thoroughly enjoy.

12 minutes of rare behind the scenes Mortal Kombat 1 footage

If you didn't know, the original Mortal Kombat used real actors instead of CGI characters to pit players against one another. This meant that real actors had to perform each of the attacks and defensive moves, much like a modern day movie except the quality is that of 1992.

Above we have some exclusive behind the scenes footage of the original Mortal Kombat recordings. We can see fighters and actors attempting to perform a variety of different attacks, defensive moves and jumps. It is honestly quite amusing looking back on what is now a 30 year old running franchise and seeing what was required of actors. This was motion capping before there was motion capping. Better yet, the actors nor the developers behind Mortal Kombat knew that this game would go on to be a pivotal part of gaming history.

Dauntless now has 5 million slayers who live for the hunt

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 27, 2019 3:00 AM CDT

Phoenix Labs recently released their new title Dauntless earlier this week, and there is no doubt that the free-to-play title has taken off as an announcement has clocked in the player-base at 5 million.

Dauntless now has 5 million slayers who live for the hunt

For those that don't know, Dauntless takes the hunting of monsters, adds a free-to-play element, and allows for players to enjoy the action together across different platforms. Dauntless comes with true cross-play and cross-progression support across Xbox, PS4 and PC. Phoenix Labs are currently working on both a Nintendo Switch and mobile edition of Dauntless, so we can expect that sometime in the future.

Gameplay wise, players will take on the role of a Slayer and be pitted against invading monsters that will require strategic levels of gameplay and immense damage to take down. At the moment many players are reporting that the title is having trouble with matchmaking players together, Phoenix Labs acknowledged this a couple of days ago and is currently working on a resolution to the issue. If you are interested in more information about Dauntless, you can check out the official PC listing for title here.

Kojima has released a Death Stranding teaser before E3 2019

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 27, 2019 2:00 AM CDT

Metal Gear Solid director Hideo Kojima has taken to Twitter to once again tease his coming mysterious title Death Stranding. This time round we have a 30 second clip that again raises more questions than it answers.

Kojima has released a Death Stranding teaser before E3 2019

Kojima has been teasing fans since the announcement of Death Stranding which was way back in 2016 at E3. Now that we are only a few weeks out from E3 2019, we can expect that despite Sony's lack of presence at the event that Kojima will have something to show off.

Since there is just a lack of solid news surrounding Death Stranding, many fans believed the title is being developed for the next-gen PlayStation since there hasn't been a release date slapped on it yet. These rumors have since been squashed as Sony has confirmed that Death Standing alongside, The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima are still coming to PS4. It is to be believed that these three titles are being developed for both consoles and that we could see a graphical/performance improvement for the next-gen versions.

Live-action Sonic The Hedgehog movie delayed until 2020

Jak Connor | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | May 27, 2019 1:00 AM CDT

A new piece of news has come out about the coming Sonic the Hedgehog movie starring Jim Carrey. The news confirms that the film will be delayed and that designers will be taking a second look at Sonic's appearance.

Live-action Sonic The Hedgehog movie delayed until 2020

Back in early May, the official trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie was released and unfortunately it was met with a considerable amount of scepticism on the design choice of Sonic. Many fans believed that Sonic's design was terrible, the Blue Blur didn't feature his iconic gloves, oversized shoes/feet and had a human-like appearance.

This fan critizism wasn't taken lightly, and actually resulted in the movies director Jeff Fowler recognizing that some improvements to Sonic had to be made before the movie released this November. Shortly after the trailer debuted, Fowler took to Twitter to announce that Sonic would be re-designed and that Paramount and SEGA are dedicated to making Sonic look the best that he can be.

AMD announces next-gen Radeon RX 5000 series graphics cards

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | May 26, 2019 9:56 PM CDT

Computex 2019 - AMD has just officially unveild its next-gen Navi GPU architecture here at Computex 2019, with some detials on the upcoming Radeon RX 5000 series.

AMD announces next-gen Radeon RX 5000 series graphics cards

Yes, it's not the Radeon RX 3000 series like we previously thought -- with AMD using its 50th anniversary as a jumping point to launch the new Radeon RX 5000 series. AMD unveiled the new Radeon RX 5700 versus NVIDIA's current GeForce RTX 2070 with Strange Brigade running and it outperforming the Turing-based RTX 2070 in early form.

AMD committed to a July release window for Radeon RX 5000 series cards but didn't detail any other cards, so we can expect that the previously rumored 7/7 release to take place. We will hear everything about Navi and the new Radeon RX 5000 series at AMD's upcoming Next Horizon Gaming event next month.

AMD Ryzen 9 3900X: 12C/24T chip will cost $499

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | May 26, 2019 8:37 PM CDT

Computex 2019 - We are sitting in the AMD Computex 2019 press conference while some of our staffers are watching the YouTube livestream and we noticed that some of the prep work for the event was going up over the internet onto YouTube.

AMD Ryzen 9 3900X: 12C/24T chip will cost $499

Well, now we have the skinny on AMD's next-gen Ryzen 3000 series CPUs including processor names and pricing, but there's not much known outside of that right now. For now: the quick and dirty version is that the flagship Ryzen 9 3900X will be a 12C/24T processor for $499, while the Ryzen 9 3800X will cost $399 and the Ryzen 7 3700X will cost just $329.

We don't know everything yet, but in the AMD livestream (publicly available) the company explained: "For third-gen Ryzen a big focus has been high frame rate and light threaded games".

Intel tease Core i9-9900KS: rocks out at 5GHz on all 8 cores

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | May 26, 2019 6:22 PM CDT

Computex 2019 - AMD is about to kick off its huge Computex 2019 keynote, so what does its competitor have to show: oh, a special edition Core i9-9900K which will be called the 9900KS.

Intel tease Core i9-9900KS: rocks out at 5GHz on all 8 cores

Intel's new Core i9-9900KS is virtually identical to teh current 8C/16T chip in the 9900K except the new variant rolls out with all-core boost clocks of 5GHz which is impressive. Intel will unveil more details of the Core i9-9900KS during its Computex 2019 keynote tomorrow, but they did confirm it will have a base clock of 4GHz (compared to 3.6GHz on the 9900K).

We can expect the TDP on the 9900KS to be freaking high -- something Intel isn't talking about now, but alongside the 8C/16T of processing power we have 16MB of L3 cache, GT2 graphics, and the same soldered IHS that was on the 9900K.

Xbox SDK now includes streaming API for Project xCloud

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 26, 2019 5:29 PM CDT

Microsoft is talking up its new Project xCloud game streaming service ahead of E3 2019, and has some exciting news for developers.

Xbox SDK now includes streaming API for Project xCloud

Xbox One game developers can now optimize their titles for cloud streaming. Microsoft updated its Xbox SDK toolset with a new streaming-focused API in preparation of its big new Project xCloud subscription. The SDK not only ensures compatibility between consoles, PCs, and now mobile devices via xCloud, but the new API also gives developers more flexibility to get the most out of Microsoft's new service.

"We also recently added enhancements to our standard Xbox Developer Kit (XDK) to add support for streaming," Microsoft VP of cloud Kareem Choudhry said in a recent Xbox Wire update. "One API we're excited about is the new "IsStreaming" API which allows any game to know if it's streaming from the cloud. Games can then cue features and functionality to enhance the streaming experience; for instance, adjusting font sizes for smaller displays or hosting multiplayer matches on a single server to reduce latency. We'll continue to look for ways to empower developers to tailor their games for the many ways their customers play."

Expect caveats with Microsoft's Project xCloud streaming

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 26, 2019 4:19 PM CDT

Microsoft's new Project xCloud streaming service is very ambitious, but like any cloud gaming subscription we should expect some big caveats.

Expect caveats with Microsoft's Project xCloud streaming

Like Google's Stadia platform, Project xCloud has the potential to change gaming forever. Microsoft has the upper edge with its established Xbox LIVE core framework, as well as its vast storefront of digital games. First Xbox bridged PC and consoles, and now Microsoft is aiming at the whole pie by bringing Xbox to mobile. Now the company makes some bold affirmations that Project xCloud will technically support all existing and future Xbox One games. But will it actually host and beam the 3,000 plus titles available on Xbox? Probably not.

In a recent update on Xbox Wire, Microsoft VP of cloud Kareem Choudhry said Project xCloud's infrastructure can technically support any game playable on the Xbox One. If it's playable on Xbox One, it could be streamed on Project xCloud, including original Xbox and Xbox 360 games. Coudhry says the games will be natively scaled across all devices and platforms without any additional work from the developer.

Microsoft's E3 2019 conference will last 2 hours

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 26, 2019 3:20 PM CDT

Microsoft's E3 2019 will be a fusillade of games, hardware, and services that lasts as long as a feature-length movie.

Microsoft's E3 2019 conference will last 2 hours

Xbox is going big at E3 2019. Microsoft confirmed this year's show is its biggest yet, and now we have a concrete duration for the show. According to the Xbox @ E3 website, the conference will last a cool 2 hours. Gamers can expect updates and teases on Microsoft's next-generation Xbox Scarlett family of consoles that includes an enthusiast and mid-grade option, lots of info on its new Project xCloud streaming service, reveal of Game Pass on PC, and lots of games.

I think Project xCloud will be the star of the show. Following Google's cloud streaming Stadia announcement, companies are eager to hit back and remind consumers of their own services. Microsoft announced Project xCloud at last year's E3 and the cloud service has matured tremendously since them. I also think Microsoft will only lightly touch on Xbox Scarlett, which should be powered by highly customized AMD Zen 2 CPU and Navi GPU tech.

PS5 won't launch with a new PSVR headset

Sony confirms it's new ultra-powerful PlayStation 5 console won't come with a brand new PSVR headset.

PS5 won't launch with a new PSVR headset

The PS5 is shaping up to be quite a beast that's flexible as well as powerful. The next-gen PlayStation is a true leap with its AMD-powered Zen 2 CPU and Navi GPU architecture, an ultra-fast SSD, and a host of new services and content, but the PS4's legacy will live on through the new gen. Sony confirms the PS5 is fully compatible with all existing PS4 games, peripherals, and even the PlayStation VR. This backward compatibility means Sony isn't in any hurry to refresh its PSVR headset for the new gen--even if the hardware is somewhat antiquated.

In a recent interview with CNET, Sony R&D exec Dominic Mallinson says the PS5 won't have a new advanced PSVR at launch. "There's no reason for us to coincide it with a new console. From the point of view of the consumer, to be bombarded with many many things is a message that we don't want to send. In some ways it's good to have a little breathing space between those things."
