This 'smart city' design would be a 100% self-sufficient eco-utopia

Jak Connor | Energy | Nov 21, 2019 3:38 AM CST

Have you ever wondered what a city would look like if it were able to 100% self-sustain itself? Well, those design plans are out, and its currently in the works near Mexico.

This 'smart city' design would be a 100% self-sufficient eco-utopia

A Milan-based architecture firm, Stefano Boeri Architetti, has laid out plans for what has been called a smart "forest city" located near Cancun, Mexico. The city is designed in a way that allows its residents to be completely self-sustained; this includes all water, food, and power needs. According to the press release, this city will be spaced out over 557 hectares. Out of the 557 hectares, 400 of those will be taken up by 7,500,000 plants.

The press release says that the city is designed for around 130,000 residents, and it will feature a selection of different housing options. Plans indicate that solar panels will surround the entire city, powering all the needs of the residents living there. Water will be pulled from the Caribbean and desalinized and then fed back into the plant life growing there through navigable canals. There will be no cars in the city, and instead transportation will consist of an electric "mobility in chain" transit system. For more information about this smart city, check out this article here.

Incredible image of Milky Way Galaxy taken at 'world's largest mirror'

Jak Connor | Gaming | Nov 21, 2019 2:38 AM CST

NASA has released a brand new stunning photo of our Milky Way galaxy, and its reflection over the world's largest mirror.

Incredible image of Milky Way Galaxy taken at 'world's largest mirror'

The image which has been released in NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day was taken by photographer Jheison Huerta. So, where is the 'world's largest mirror', and what is it exactly? The 'world's largest mirror' is actually not a mirror at all, it's the Uyuni Salt Flat in Bolivia. Since the salt flat is large and extremely flat, after rainfall, it begins to glisten and reflects any light that hits it, creating the mirror effect.

NASA also explains what Huerta has captured in this incredible image, saying " What's being reflected in the world's largest mirror? Stars, galaxies, and a planet. Many of these stars are confined to the grand arch that runs across the image, an arch that is the central plane of our home Milky Way Galaxy. Inside the arch is another galaxy - the neighboring Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Stars that are individually visible include Antares on the far left and Sirius on the far right. The planet Jupiter shines brightly just below Antares."

Joker 2 not happening (yet), DC Comics has too much of a 'busy slate'

Jak Connor | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Nov 21, 2019 2:07 AM CST

DC Comics' Joker movie laughed its way over the $1 billion-grossing mark at the box office, but does that mean we are going to be getting a follow-up movie?

Joker 2 not happening (yet), DC Comics has too much of a 'busy slate'

According to a new report by Variety, Warner Bros. film chief Toby Emmerich has met with the writer and director of Joker to see what ideas are currently being cooked up for a sequel. Variety says that insiders close to the talks have said that these discussions regarding a sequel are very young and that nothing is solidified as of yet. Meaning that there is no script, no roles confirmed, no storyline etc.

Other insiders said that Warner Bros and DC aren't talking about Todd Phillips doing another origin story of a DC comic-book character. Variety says that "Any "Joker" follow-up will take years to pull off, and DC has a busy slate". This "busy slate" includes the release of Wonder Women 1984, the new Batman movie with Robert Pattinson playing the Cape Crusader, and Margot Robbie's upcoming "Birds of Prey".

Fans are suspecting bias for Death Stranding's Game Awards nominations

Jak Connor | Gaming | Nov 21, 2019 1:32 AM CST

Just yesterday, The Game Awards released their official list of the titles that are nominated to win prizes at its show this December. Not to everyone's surprise, Kojima Productions' Death Stranding is nominated.

Fans are suspecting bias for Death Stranding's Game Awards nominations

While this usually wouldn't be a problem for a great title to be nominated, some fans of The Game Awards have expressed their concern over the showrunner for the annual ceremony being directly involved within Death Stranding. Death Stranding was nominated for eight separate categories, and The Game Awards showrunner Geoff Keighley also plays a cameo role in the game. As you can see, this raises some questions towards Keighley's influence in what titles get nominated for what categories and if there was bias at play.

Keighley took to social media in reply to some fans' concerns, saying that he doesn't personally vote on the nominee's and that there is a jury of 80 media that select them. "I don't vote on the nominees there is a jury of 80 media that select the nominees!" This is very much true. The Game Awards has a panel of 80 different media from around the globe, and these media outlets vote on each title for selected categories then the public votes as well. The public vote makes up 10% of the final count, meaning there are no outside influences such as Keighley. Don't believe Keighley? Check out the official Game Awards website for more information.

Elon Musk called a British diver 'pedo-guy', now faces slander lawsuit

Jak Connor | Business, Financial & Legal | Nov 21, 2019 1:04 AM CST

Elon Musk is well-known for his commitment to the public forum Twitter. His comments to fans are his way of addressing supporters and the public. Sometimes those comments can get out of hand, though, or at least they are alleged to be out of hand.

Elon Musk called a British diver 'pedo-guy', now faces slander lawsuit

Back in 2018, Musk gave a comment that left the public in distaste and especially the person/s who were on the receiving end. Tesla's CEO allegedly abused a British diver, Vernon Unsworth, calling him a 'pedo guy' and also abused a BuzzFeed reporter. Unsworth is now taking Musk to court, and the US District Court has said that they will hear his suit.

Unsworth said that Musk's efforts to rescue children in Thailand were a mere "PR stunt" and Musk's intelligence of the caves the children were trapped in was below par. In response to Unsworth's critics of Musk's methods, Musk called Unsworth a "pedo-guy" and Unsworth followed up with the response "stick his submarine where it hurts." The United States District Court in Los Angeles will commence hearing the suit on December 3rd.

Rick and Morty Season 4 viewed by 100,000+ desperate people on Pornhub

Jak Connor | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Nov 21, 2019 12:33 AM CST

Rick and Morty have returned with their fourth season, and while fans are scrambling to watch the episodes without paying or waiting for them to air freely, some fans have found some strange sources to view the new eps.

Rick and Morty Season 4 viewed by 100,000+ desperate people on Pornhub

Firstly, I don't condone any illegal viewing of Rick and Morty's new episodes; legitimate sources should only be used to view the new episodes. Unfortunately, though, not everyone will do that, because if there is a will there is a way, meaning people will find a way to pirate or view the new episodes no matter what. With that being said, fans have found quite the peculiar source to view the latest episodes, and it's none other than Pornhub.

Rick and Morty fans have taken to Twitter to share their connection to the new episodes. One Twitter fan wrote "Thanks pornhub for letting me watch Rick and Morty when no one else had it." Another also said, "I watched the new episode of Rick and Morty on Pornhub, what a world". It seems that when people were going to Pornhub for other purposes, they were coming across the new episode. Perhaps they were doing what they were originally intending to do when first visiting the site while watching the new episode. I mean, I'm not one to yuck someone else's yum, each to their own.

Henry Cavill says he's still Superman, now #ReleaseTheSnyderCut

Anthony Garreffa | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Nov 20, 2019 10:46 PM CST

There has been a cloud of doubt hanging over whether Henry Cavill was still playing the Man of Steel, but the Superman actor has now said the role is still his during an interview with Mens Health recently.

Henry Cavill says he's still Superman, now #ReleaseTheSnyderCut

Cavill said: "The cape is in the closet. It's still mine". The interview is filled with stories of Cavill's life, his previous roles in The Tudors, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the fabled (and oh-so-bad) Josstice League, I mean Justice League.

In regards to Cavill's thoughts on Batman v Superman, he said: "A great starting point. If I were to go back, I don't think I'd change anything. Very much a Batman movie. And I think that realm of darkness is great for a Batman movie".

ASUS ProArt StudioBook Pro X: 17-inch laptop with Xeon CPU, Quadro GPU

Anthony Garreffa | Laptops | Nov 20, 2019 9:46 PM CST

ASUS has just announced its new ASUS ProArt StudioBook Pro X W730 laptop, with some incredibly beefy specs up on offer with an OLED display, Intel Xeon CPU, and NVIDIA Quadro GPU.

ASUS ProArt StudioBook Pro X: 17-inch laptop with Xeon CPU, Quadro GPU

The new ASUS ProArt StudioBook Pro X W730 arrives with a large 17.3-inch OLED display with a native 1920 x 1200 resolution, in what ASUS calls a NanoEdge display -- for those slim bezels. The display itself covers 97% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, is Pantone Validated, and factory-calibrated to a Delta E<1.5 accuracy -- something not often seen on laptops.

ASUS uses an Intel Xeon E-2276M processor, an 8C/16T chip clocked between 2.8GHz and 4.7GHz with 12MB of cache, while the GPU goes to a glorious NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000 with 16GB of GDDR6. There's also a huge 64GB of DDR4-2666 RAM inside, and 4TB of storage to boot (this is done between 2 x PCIe 3.0-based x4 SSDs and 1 x HDD).

Rick from Rick and Morty uses 128-bit AMD CPU, 3,584,825,480GB of RAM

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Nov 20, 2019 9:11 PM CST

So it appears Rick from Rick and Morty has the only PC capable of running Crysis -- with the recent episode of the show 'The Old Man and the Seat' seeing Rick use one of his computers to perform a "reverse digestion extrapolation"... or a sh*t analysis, in laymen's terms.

Rick from Rick and Morty uses 128-bit AMD CPU, 3,584,825,480GB of RAM

Rick boots up his system and that's when we get a look at the specs, which are pretty insane. Rick is using a 128-bit CPU from AMD, while in the real-world we're limited to 64-bit right now with consumer AMD processors. It's not out of the realm of reality but it shows that Rick has a system that far outpaces your AMD Ryzen or Intel Core CPUs.

The system has 400TB of NVMe M.2 SSDs which once again is pretty crazy, but it's not petabytes of storage while Rick has 3,584,825,480GB of RAM. Rick isn't using Windows either, as he uses a Linux-based OS in Debian.

The new rumor comes from Twitter user PSERebus, who reported the November 20, 2020 launch date for the PS5 -- the same day Gran Turismo 7 launches. All the tweet said was: "Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) will publish Gran Turismo 7 on November 20, 2020 for the PlayStation 5 (PS5)".

Back in April 2019 we heard that Gran Turismo 7 would be work on the next-gen PlayStation VR 2.0 headset, something that should launch with the next-gen PlayStation 5 console. This would be another huge win for Sony, getting a next-gen Gran Turismo from Polyphony Digital for its next-gen PS5 and PSVR 2.0 products in November 2020.

Solar energy breakthrough: fossil fuels replaced with AI & sunlight

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Nov 20, 2019 7:30 PM CST

You might not have heard about Heliogen before, but you will soon if their new technology continues breaking barriers -- the Bill Gates-backed energy startup has successfully concentrated solar energy at "breakthrough" temperatures breaching 1000C (1832F), making it hot enough that it could replace fossil fuels in industrial tasks like producing cement and steel.

Solar energy breakthrough: fossil fuels replaced with AI & sunlight

Heliogen is tapping AI in the form of computer vision to precisely align a bunch of mirrors to reflect sunlight on a single target, therefore concentrating all of the sun's energy into one point. Until now, this wasn't exactly possible and it's what Heliogen has done differently - and successfully.

At their commercial facility in Lancaster, California, Heliogen experienced what is just our first taste at the realms of replacing fossil fuels by using carbon-free, ultra-high temperature heat from the sun, transforming that sunlight into fuels. Before now, commercial concentration of sunlight have only reached 565C (1049F) -- but Heliogen's work here saw them hit 1000C (1832F). These temperatures are normally only reached by burning fossil fuels, making this a big breakthrough.

Frostbite was a big roadblock for BioWare, was 'very hard to manage'

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 20, 2019 6:12 PM CST

DICE's Frostbite engine is like an unwieldy weapon. In the right hands it's tremendously powerful, but for the most part it's heavy and hard to control. The engine is great for shooters, but not so much for the kind of RPGs BioWare likes to make. Now ex-BioWare boss Aaryn Flynn talks about how Frostbite both enabled and inhibited the studio during Dragon Age: Inquisition and Mass Effect: Andromeda's development.

Frostbite was a big roadblock for BioWare, was 'very hard to manage'

In 2010, BioWare made the decision to switch from its internal Eclipse games engine over to EA's new standardized Frostbite from DICE. Frostbite was complex, potent, and had lots of potential, but it was a thorn in BioWare's side from the start. The engine is extremely powerful and can create some incredible atmospheric effects and physics systems wrapped in high-fidelity graphics. But there was so, so much that was missing from it: Frostbite wasn't built for RPGs, and BioWare had to create a lot of its UI, camera, and basic RPG systems from scratch. With how much work and iteration BioWare had to do on the new engine, it's a miracle that Dragon Age: Inquisition even shipped at all.

Now in a recent talk at Reboot Develop Red, Aaryn Flynn shares what it was like to use Frostbite to make games like Dragon Age: Inquisition and Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Destiny 2 all-in-one collection coming to PS4, Xbox One, PC

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 20, 2019 5:09 PM CST

Destiny 2: The Collection has been rated by PEGI for consoles and PC, indicating an incoming release.

Destiny 2 all-in-one collection coming to PS4, Xbox One, PC

Right now Destiny 2 isn't sold as a complete package anywhere except for Stadia. To get everything Destiny 2 has to offer, you need to buy Forsaken at $20 and then Shadowkeep at $35. It's a bit confusing for new players who jump into Destiny 2's free-to-play New Light version and want to continue their progress, only finding out a good portion of the game is locked.

Now Bungie wants to remedy that with a GOTY-styled collection that gives buyers access to everything. The Destiny 2 collection comes with the base game, Curse of Osiris, Warmind, Forsaken, Shadowkeep, and the annual season pass. No pricing has been confirmed yet, but expect to see it for at least $49.99 (maybe full-price at $59.99).

Diablo IV may have a paragon system, but it might not be infinite

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 20, 2019 4:18 PM CST

Diablo IV is meant to be the penultimate Diablo game, complete with Diablo III mechanics, Diablo II's style, and never-ending gameplay. Endgame progression is a huge part of that and now Blizzard discusses what could happen with their macabre sequel.

Diablo IV may have a paragon system, but it might not be infinite

In a recent development update, Blizzard strongly hints Diablo IV will have a paragon-like system that allows gamers to keep progressing well after they hit the level 40 cap. "We haven't decided whether the character leveling and experience system should be finite or infinite. We've been discussing the pros and cons of both," Diablo IV lead systems designer David Kim said.

"We have a couple reasons for having a different experience system in addition to a level cap. A level cap gives us the ability to grant players a sense of completion. But for players who want to go deeper into the game, a second experience system allows us to capture the fun of achieving those really difficult endgame goals and ranks."

Project Scarlett may cost $499 with 4x Xbox One X performance

Microsoft's beefy Project Scarlett console may match the PS5's rumored $499 price tag.

Project Scarlett may cost $499 with 4x Xbox One X performance

Project Scarlett is shaping up to be a beast of a console. Microsoft says Scarlett will deliver 4x the performance of the Xbox One X's 6TFLOPs of compute power, and even 40x more performance than current Xbox systems, all thanks to its boosted internal Zen 2 CPU and Navi GPU specs. It may even deliver 4K 120FPS gaming, complete with adaptive sync support. Typically this kind of tech leap is accompanied by a steep price tag, but new reports say Scarlett could cost as cheap as $499 when it ships in 2020.

The info comes from Twitter user PSErebus, whose track record includes accurately predicting The Last of Us Part II's original February 2020 release date (which has been delayed). Nothing has been confirmed by either Microsoft or Sony, so this is speculation at best.

Stadia is a data hog, can consume 119MB per minute

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 20, 2019 8:34 AM CST

Stadia's a hog that rampantly consumes data. This really isn't a surprise, though, and signs were all there from the beginning. We originally reported Google's new game-streaming service is set to demolish data caps in no time flat, and that the service's launch lineup includes some of the worst games to stream across any kind of data-restricted environment. But now we have actual incremental data usage consumption to illustrate Stadia's voracious appetite.

Stadia is a data hog, can consume 119MB per minute

According to VentureBeat, Google Stadia can consume over 100MB per minute when streaming games in 1080p 60FPS. After 13 minutes of Red Dead Redemption 2 in 1080p 60FPS, the outlet says Stadia had used 1.55GB of data. And honestly in an intensely grindy, slow-burn game like Red Dead Redemption 2, 13 minutes accomplishes absolutely nothing.

Obviously how much data you use depends totally on the resolution you stream at. Stadia's resolution settings can be changed on-the-fly only in the mobile app, and the service allows three settings: 720p 60FPS, 1080p 60FPS, and 4K 60FPS (which is only available on Chromecast Ultra streaming to your TV, not on PC or mobile).
