Resident Evil 3 Remake likely optimized for next-gen consoles

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 22, 2019 4:29 PM CST

Inside sources say Resident Evil 3: Remake is set for 2020, which is pretty exciting. But what's even more exciting is how it should be optimized for next-gen consoles.

Resident Evil 3 Remake likely optimized for next-gen consoles

Pretty much every game releasing in 2020 will be optimized for next-gen consoles in some way. We don't know exactly how this will work, but expect enhancement patches to roll out for games released prior to the PS5 and Project Scarlett in Holiday 2020. Games released during next-gen rollout should be fully optimized for each platform, complete with a separate SKU for next-gen systems.

Capcom is among the major heavy-hitting publishers who are banking big on next-gen. The company only released one major game in FY2019 (Monster Hunter World: Iceborne) and sent a clear message to investors: They're ramping up their biggest games for next-gen consoles. Capcom's COO already confirmed the REngine is being used to craft new titles on next-gen consoles, and we expect Resident Evil 3 Remake to be one of them.

Half-Life: Alyx is basically practice for more Half-Life games

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 22, 2019 1:56 PM CST

Half-Life: Alyx is just the beginning of Half-Life's comeback story, and Valve reveals why they chose to make a VR-exclusive game rather than jump right into Half-Life 3.

Half-Life: Alyx is basically practice for more Half-Life games

The new Half-Life game isn't what we expected. It's a VR-only Half-Life 2 prequel that aims to be virtual reality's killer app and justify Valve's massive investment into the still-fringe platform. But it also serves another big role: Half-Life: Alyx is basically a practice run for new Half-Life projects. It's a way to get Valve back into the groove of the franchise, all while learning new things about Source 2 like optimizing graphics, textures, and FPS mechanics. A lot of what Valve learns from Half-Life: Alyx can translate into other Half-Life games, even if they're not VR projects.

In a recent interview with Geoff Keighley, Valve programmers talked about how Half-Life: Alyx is a stepping stone to new things. The team might not be ready to work on Half-Life 3 just yet, but this new VR project will help pave the way to that magical threequel.

Pokemon boycott didn't work, Sword and Shield sell 6 million copies

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 22, 2019 8:25 AM CST

Pokemon Sword and Shield are massive sellers on the Nintendo Switch, moving more than 6 million copies in the first three days of availability. Apparently that proposed boycott didn't achieve much.

Pokemon boycott didn't work, Sword and Shield sell 6 million copies

With its decision to cut out a lot of original iconic Pokemon from Sword and Shield (a controversy known as Dexit), GameFreak aggravated lots of fans. There were also moves that were cut, and other features watered down to make the games more friendly for new players. Many called for a boycott of the new Switch RPG duo, but the proposed boycott really didn't have an affect on game sales.

Nintendo today announced that Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield together sold-through more than 6 million copies worldwide, including physical and digital purchases. This makes the duo the highest-grossing Pokemon game of all time. Nintendo also confirms the games managed to sell over 2 million copies in the United States in the launch weekend.

Researchers make next-gen soft skin-like robots that are pocket-size

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Nov 22, 2019 3:12 AM CST

Soft Robotics just took a step forward into the future with a new advancement that sees the development of stretchable skin-like robots.

Researchers make next-gen soft skin-like robots that are pocket-size

This new technology has been published in Soft Robotics and has come out of the University of Bristol. The difference between 'soft robots' and normal robots is that soft robots can adapt to their environment by stretching and shifting design, while normal robots are much more ridged. Up until now, researchers have had to choose between the soft robots' ability to move and its ability to be able to grip onto surfaces.

Now, researchers from the University of Bristol have taken large inspiration from biological life such as slugs and snails and developed a new robotic skin that can do both. This new robotic skin can crawl across surfaces by the new artificial muscles that researchers have developed for it and grips to surfaces using electrical charges. The new invention has been titled ElectroSkin, and it's so stretchable that it can be compressed down a normal pants pocket.

Elon Musk asks SpaceX employees not to be on drugs while at work

Jak Connor | Business, Financial & Legal | Nov 22, 2019 2:11 AM CST

Elon Musk, the CEO of both Tesla and SpaceX has written an email to all of his SpaceX employee's regarding drug use in the workplace.

Elon Musk asks SpaceX employees not to be on drugs while at work

While on The Joe Rogan Podcast back in September last year, Elon Musk decided to take a load off and have a puff a blunt containing cannabis and tobacco. Musk also mentioned that smoking the cannabis on the JRE Podcast "was not wise", and that the way that he smoked the drugs is a clear demonstration of his unfamiliarity of it. Musk also reinforced that the JRE Podcast is located in California where cannabis is recreational legal.

Since that time, Musk has emailed SpaceX employees regarding drug use at work, saying "SpaceX personnel may not use or possess any controlled substance while in the workplace, and also may not be under the influence of legal or illegal drugs while at work". This information was acquired by The Washington Post and it reads, "Anyone who appears to be inebriated or under the influence while at work is subject to drug testing and potentially other employment actions".

SpaceX's Starship rocket blew up during pressure test, not a 'setback'

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Nov 22, 2019 1:34 AM CST

SpaceX is currently in the midst of testing its prototype Starship Mk1 vehicle, and with every good prototype you are bound to run into some complications.

SpaceX's Starship rocket blew up during pressure test, not a 'setback'

During the Starship's max pressure testing that occurred yesterday in Texas, the next-gen spacecraft blew its top and erupted huge plumes of gas into the sky. Some pieces of the craft busted off the ship and scattered around the testing site. A spokesperson for SpaceX told The Verge that "The purpose of today's test was to pressurize systems to the max, so the outcome was not completely unexpected."

The spokesperson also said that "There were no injuries, nor is this a serious setback." While the above video might seem like its a massive problem, SpaceX is assuring the public that this is no set back and is routine testing procedure. Instead of repairing Mk1 and continuing ahead with that design, SpaceX founder and CEO, Elon Musk has said on Twitter that they will instead move towards a new and more up-to-date design that the company had on the shelf.

This transforming football-like drone can be ballistically-launched

Jak Connor | Drones | Nov 22, 2019 1:06 AM CST

Researchers from both Caltech and NASA have developed a new type of drone that can be fired from a moving cannon.

This transforming football-like drone can be ballistically-launched

The drone is called the Streamlined Quick Unfolding Investigation Drone, or SQUID for short. SQUID has been developed by Caltech and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and has the ability to fold down into almost a football-like shape. Most impressively is the once SQUID is in its smallest form factor, it can be placed inside of a tube and then launched into the sky.

The multirotor design initiates once the drone is in mid-air, granting its stability and flight. The drone doesn't have to be stationary for it to be shot out of the cannon. The above video demonstrates that SQUID can be shot out of a moving vehicle traveling at 50mph and still transition into stable flight. SQUID is designed for emergency response teams and space exploration missions. An image of SQUID's design has been provided in the entirety of this article.

Rick and Morty Season 4 Episode 2 preview: Jerry's Mountain Sweat

Jak Connor | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Nov 22, 2019 12:31 AM CST

Rick and Morty Season 4 episode 2 released this week, and if you haven't seen it then I'd advise watching the below video.

Rick and Morty Season 4 Episode 2 preview: Jerry's Mountain Sweat

Now that the spoiler disclaimer if over, lets move onto what we have above. Adult Swim have released the after-credits episode of Rick and Morty season 4 episode 2, showing Jerry venturing to the fridge and finding globafin. Jerry was most likely going for a midnight snack of some-sort and of course, does something completely stupid.

Jerry has a small part of the globafin, which if you don't know lets the drinker live out their absolutely wildest fantasies. Jerry's fantasty isn't that wild though, well it might be for him. After consuming some of the globafin, Jerry becomes a hard-working water delivery drive for Mountain Sweat. He drops off water to customers and installs the machines for them, getting compliments along the way. What does this after-credits scene show us?

Half-Life 3 is still possible, Valve says other Half-Life games coming

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 21, 2019 6:51 PM CST

Half-Life is back, and Valve isn't just stopping with its new prequel VR project. Other games could happen too, including that magical threequel everyone's been dying to see.

Half-Life 3 is still possible, Valve says other Half-Life games coming

Today Valve did the unthinkable: Not only did it announce a new game, but it announced a new Half-Life game. Unfortunately, it's not Half-Life 3. The new project, Half-Life: Alyx, is a VR-exclusive endeavor that packs a full singleplayer-driven campaign that takes place between Half-Life 1 and 2. You play as Alyx Vance in immersive, real-time VR FPS chaos--Valve built the game from the ground up for VR, and it supports motion tracking, multiple inputs, and allows for realistic interactions like dodging enemy attacks, scouring the environment for ammo and gear, and leaning around corners (to name a few).

But what about everyone who doesn't have a VR headset? Valve apparently has you covered.

Half-Life: Alyx supports mods via new VR-optimized Source 2 tools

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 21, 2019 4:22 PM CST

Valve just revealed Half-Life: Alyx, a new VR-exclusive shooter that takes place before Half-Life 2. And like any Half-Life game, the new VR project will support user-created mods for lots of chicanery, chaos, and fun.

Half-Life: Alyx supports mods via new VR-optimized Source 2 tools

With its high-def visuals, immersive real-time combat, and realistically-reactive environments, Half-Life: Alyx looks like the killer VR app. But the real excitement could come after launch as gamers and fans alter the game with their own levels and scenarios. The game may not have multiplayer...but it has the second best thing that'll ensure it doesn't die a few months after release.

Tucked in Half-Life: Alyx announcement is confirmation of full Source 2 modding support, effectively allowing anyone to create their own unique customized slices of gameplay. Half-Life has a long history with modding and level-editing--the original game still has an active playerbase thanks to Sven Co-op and Deathmatch action--and it's great to see this tradition continue with the VR project.

Sega Saturn devkits cost $77,000 back in 1995

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 21, 2019 3:32 PM CST

Games development is, and always has been, pretty expensive. Even back in the day when 3D gaming was just hitting its stride, a Sega Saturn devkit would cost over $70,000...and that's not even including licensing and publishing fees.

Sega Saturn devkits cost $77,000 back in 1995

ResetEra user Krejlooc recently got their hands-on a Sega Saturn devkit to make old-school games with. The kit came with documentation that outlined the price of all the components and tech you'd need to make a Saturn game in the 90s. The results aren't too pretty.

Making a Sega Saturn game would cost you roughly $77,000 to start (roughly $128,000 in today's dollars). That's not including your time, the miscellaneous fees required to pass and publish your game, nor does it include the astronomically expensive Indigo2 workstation used for 3D modeling way back when.

Amazon's plan to conquer game streaming in 2020

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 21, 2019 11:31 AM CST

While Google Stadia falters with a rough launch, Amazon is watching on the sidelines and taking notes for its own game streaming service.

Amazon's plan to conquer game streaming in 2020

Amazon wants in on the new game streaming craze, and plans to reveal its own cloud subscription service in 2020, sources familiar with the plans tell CNet. The company plans to leverage its million-dollar Twitch game streaming empire and its rich ecosystem of interconnected products to supplement the service.

The idea is Amazon will arrive as another competitor to Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo, especially as the first two roll out next-gen consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Project Scarlett in 2020. Amazon is also watching closely at Google's missteps with Stadia.

Cloud-powered PlayStation controller may let you play free game demos

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Nov 21, 2019 7:30 AM CST

A bit ago we spotted a patent for a Wi-Fi-enabled PlayStation game controller, presumably used as a receiver and host for console-free PlayStation Now gaming. But the controller might do more, and it could serve as a very powerful entry point for the PlayStation ecosystem.

Cloud-powered PlayStation controller may let you play free game demos

What if you could go and buy a DualShock 4 controller, for, say PC gaming, but still hook it up to your TV to sample free user-created PlayStation game demos? That could happen, at least that's what a recent patent suggests.

Just yesterday I reported on an interesting patent that would allow PlayStation gamers to create their own custom gameplay demos and send them off to friends. It turns out this game demo patent is directly linked to the previous cloud-powered DualShock controller patent. All of the permutations, embodiments, and drawings are the same, and the game demos (also referred to as mini-games) are specifically mentioned.

This gamma-ray burst emitted more energy than the Sun's 10b year life

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Nov 21, 2019 4:20 AM CST

NASA has said that the Hubble Space Telescope is giving astronomers a look at the location of the most powerful gamma-ray burst ever recorded.

This gamma-ray burst emitted more energy than the Sun's 10b year life

According to the post on the official NASA website, in January this year, a gamma-ray burst was detected by many of NASA's telescopes, and since then further study has been made by Hubble and astronomers. This gamma-ray burst was a trillion times more powerful than visible light, and just within the few seconds of the blast happening, it emitted more energy than the sun has provided over its 10 billion year life.

Andrew Levan of the Institute for Mathematics, Astrophysics and Particle Physics Department of Astrophysics at Radboud University in the Netherlands said, "Hubble's observations suggest that this particular burst was sitting in a very dense environment, right in the middle of a bright galaxy 5 billion light years away. This is really unusual, and suggests that this concentrated location might be why it produced this exceptionally powerful light".
