Switch Online NES games can't be played entirely offline

| Sep 14, 2018 5:35 PM CDT

Going somewhere without internet? You may not be able to play installed Switch Online NES games.

Switch Online NES games can't be played entirely offline

Switch Online's batch of free NES games have optional online play for co-op and competitive action, but they can still be played offline. The $20 a year service grants access to a growing library of old-school NES games--this move actually replaces traditional Virtual Console on the Switch. There's a catch though: the retro classics will require subscribers to connect to the internet once a week in order to play.

"Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online can by played for up to seven days without an internet connection," reads a FAQ page. "If you are unable to launch Nintendo Entertainment System - Nintendo Switch Online, then please try connecting to the internet again."

Switch Online cloud data can be wiped if subscription lapses

| Sep 14, 2018 3:40 PM CDT

Nintendo's new $20 a year Switch Online subscription sounds like a steal, but the small fine print reveals some potentially frustrating details.

Switch Online cloud data can be wiped if subscription lapses

Nintendo has already confirmed that not every Switch game will support cloud backups. Since no local data backup options exist for the Switch, this means your 100 hour+ save file for Dark Souls Remastered could still be at risk. Switch Online was supposed to be a safety net; pay a monthly or yearly fee and you can copy your data to the cloud should your Switch malfunction or data gets corrupted (it actually happened to us). But this safety net will be yanked if you don't pay your subscription dues.

"We are unable to guarantee that cloud save data will be retained after an extended period of time from when your membership is ended," reads a support page. Nintendo didn't specify how long your subscription has to be inactive before cloud saves are wiped, but I'm guessing it's around 60 days or so, maybe more.

Final Fantasy VII, IX, X and more coming to Switch

| Sep 14, 2018 2:27 PM CDT

Square Enix is bringing a ton of beloved classic (and remastered) Final Fantasy games to the Nintendo Switch in a bid to maximize exposure.

Final Fantasy VII, IX, X and more coming to Switch

The dramatic rise of indie game sales proves Switch owners are eager for classic-inspired games; indies like The Messenger and Dead Cells have sold tremendously well on the platform. On the heels of Octopath Traveler's massive success, Square Enix has decided to hit two birds with one stone: tap into the hunger for both RPGs and old-school games by re-releasing a metric ton of Final Fantasy games on the Switch.

Final Fantasy's VII, IX, X (remastered) and XII: The Zodiac Age will arrive on the Switch sometime in 2019, allowing gamers to take some of these classic RPGs on-the-go for the first time. The following games are also coming to Xbox One except for Crystal Chronicles remastered and World of Final Fantasy Maxima.

Animal Crossing comes to Switch in 2019

| Sep 14, 2018 1:13 PM CDT

Nintendo, ever keen on making gamers' dreams come true, has confirmed a new Animal Crossing game for its latest Switch handheld-console hybrid.

Animal Crossing comes to Switch in 2019

Yesterday's direct showcase was quite jam-packed with announcements. Fans finally got full info on the Switch Online service--including special NES Switch controllers--and some interesting ports. Isabelle, which is obviously the cutest game character ever, is coming to Smash Bros. Ultimate as a new challenger. But that's not it: Nintendo also announced a new Animal Crossing game for Switch.

Other than its 2019 release timeframe, not much is actually known about Animal Crossing Switch. "Animal Crossing for Nintendo Switch (working title): A new mainline game in the Animal Crossing series - the first since Animal Crossing: New Leaf debuted on Nintendo 3DS in 2013 - is slated for a 2019 release exclusively on Nintendo Switch," reads an official press release.

Nintendo Switch Online detailed: NES games/mobile app & more

| Sep 14, 2018 5:00 AM CDT

Finally, Nintendo has given us some details on their coming Nintendo Switch Online service, via their Nintendo Direct which just finished. So, are you ready for a bunch of classic NES games to now be completely portable? what if I told you that some are now also two-player?

Nintendo Switch Online detailed: NES games/mobile app & more

We have been known about the Nintendo Switch Online service for quite some time now, we didn't really know what it would entail but we assumed that it would have something to do with Nintendo's Virtual Console and a bunch of other useful features. The Nintendo Direct that just passed has addressed those features, and boy do you get quite a bit of benefits for only $20 a year.

Starting off, members that are apart of Nintendo Switch Online will have access to cloud save data for compatible games. Members will also be able to enjoy a large selection of NES Classic games (Virtual Console), every month more and more NES games are going to be added to the Switch Online library. Some of these games have now been made available for two-players, and some can even be played online. Nintendo Switch Online will also coincide with the smartphone app, the app will allow for players to voice chat with other players while they enjoy their online experience together.

Luigi's Mansion 3 for the Switch: fans will run scared 2019

| Sep 14, 2018 4:00 AM CDT

Nintendo started their Direct off quite strong, opening viewers of the livestream stood bare witness to a brand new installment into the Luigi Mansion series. Everyone welcome a new level of spooky with Luigi's Mansion 3, exclusive to the Nintendo Switch.

Luigi's Mansion 3 for the Switch: fans will run scared 2019

The Nintendo Direct gave us a quick look at the coming title and it seems nothing has changed at all when looking at Luigi's situation. Luigi has ended up in a haunted mansion once again, it is unclear why but we do see luggage bag with the Mario symbol on it next to Luigi as he walks in. We are still dealing with what has to be the most terrified ghostbuster yet, we can see our poor main character sucking up ghosts, stunning them with his flashlight and also getting quite scared of them.

The video also details that this title is currently in working progress, which means some of the things that are displayed to us in this short teaser trailer could be subject to change. There was no official release date given, but what we do know is the Luigi's Mansion 3 will be released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch sometime throughout 2019.

Yoshi's Crafted World jumps onto the Nintendo Switch 2019

| Sep 14, 2018 3:00 AM CDT

Throughout Nintendo's Direct that just finished, we were showcased a quick 1 minute video of the upcoming new Yoshi title making its way to the Nintendo Switch. We can now officially confirm that Yoshi's Crafted World is on its way.

Yoshi's Crafted World jumps onto the Nintendo Switch 2019

Just last week I reported on a leak that revealed the title for Yoshi's Switch game, the leak actually came from Nintendo themselves as the listing on their website showcased the name. Now that name can be officially confirmed and now we also know that Yoshi's Crafted World is making its way to the Nintendo Switch sometime in the Spring of 2019.

Players that decide to pick up Yoshi's Crafted World will be glad to know that they will have the option of going the adventure with a companion. Yes, that's right, players that jump into Yoshi's Crafted World will be able to do so with a friend as well. A side note is that they will also be able to walk backwards through each of the levels, giving a different feel on how to tackle certain obstacles/enemies. Yoshi's Crafted World will exclusively come to the Nintendo Switch sometime in the Spring of 2019, for further information visit the official listing on the Nintendo website here.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate themed Switch bundle announced

| Sep 14, 2018 2:00 AM CDT

Future Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans that haven't already picked up a Nintendo Switch will be over the moon to know that there will be a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate themed Nintendo Switch bundle. Will be available for pre-order very soon.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate themed Switch bundle announced

The specially themed bundle isn't the first one we have seen for the Nintendo Switch, just a few days ago I reported on the Pokemon Let's Go Eveee/Pikachu themed bundle. The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Switch bundle has gotten a very similar treatment, we can see from the images released onto the Nintendo America Twitter page that Nintendo has decided to go with a black and white theme. On the front of the dock we can see the characters Samus, Mario, Kirby, Fox, Donkey Kong, Breathe of the Wild Link, Yoshi and Pikachu split to different sides. Picking up the left Joy-Con controller, we can see white/gray lines running from the top to the bottom, we can also see another white line stretching across to the right hand Joy-Con in a horizontal fashion. This is of course the Smash symbol.

In my personal opinion, I'm not really a fan of the bundle being black and white, I would of much preferred to be hit all those beautiful different contrasting colors from each of the respective characters. I don't really mind that the Joy-Cons are black and white, but I just feel as if the choice of having the characters on the dock black and white was wasted potential from what could of been an amazing looking Switch dock. The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate themed Nintendo Switch bundle will come with a download code of the game and will be available on November 2nd. For more information, visit the official Nintendo website here.

Nintendo Direct: Isabelle debuts to Smash Bros. Ultimate

| Sep 14, 2018 1:00 AM CDT

Nintendo just finished their livestream for the Direct and as per usual they left the Super Smash Bros. news to the very end, it was worth the wait though as Isabelle from the Animal Crossing series has been announced as a new comer to Smash Ultimate.

Nintendo Direct: Isabelle debuts to Smash Bros. Ultimate

If you happened to miss the news about the Nintendo Direct being cancelled last week the live stream was delayed due to a large scale earthquake shaking Hokkaido, Japan. Luckily everything has now become stabilized and we are able to jump back into the Nintendo Direct everyone was waiting for. Looking closely to the end of the livestream, at 34:58 we are introduced to an Isabelle cut scene, as she is organizing an office she receives a letter that asks her to join the Super Smash Bros., she is quite shocked to say the least.

Looking towards Isabelles move set now, lets dive into what we have got. Keep in mind her moveset has not been officially confirmed in terms of which moves are which buttons etc. The following is my personal assumption based on the action of each of the moves and how Isabelle uses them. We have a dash attack that is almost identical to Villagers, a side smash attack very similar to Villagers up smash, a fishing rod grab that could be side B special, pom pom spin is a neutral A, down special is a gyroid mine, up special ballon swing much like Villagers ballons and down smash being the water she douses Falco with.

Nintendo Switch getting NES controllers

| Sep 13, 2018 8:23 PM CDT

The Nintendo Switch will soon be compatible with special wireless NES controllers, the company today announced.

Nintendo Switch getting NES controllers

Nintendo is going all out on nostalgia, and gamers can soon use classic NES controllers to play old-school retro Nintendo games on the Switch Online service. The controllers have rails and can slide onto the Switch for charging, but are used exclusively to play the service's rotating lineup of NES titles.

The controllers will retail for $59.99 for a two-pack and will be available for pre-purchase once the service hits on September 18, but they aren't expected to ship until December. The controllers may not be sold in stores and apparently require a Switch Online membership to purchase--and purchases are limited to one per subscriber.

Assassin's Creed III remastered incoming

As has been the trend lately, Ubisoft is including a remastered port in a new game's season pass--this time with Assassin's Creed: Odyssey.

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey's Atlantis DLC sounds amazing

| Sep 13, 2018 6:31 PM CDT

Ubisoft will release Odyssey's paid post-launch story expansions in pieces rather than all at once...and one of them takes us to the Silver City of Atlantis.

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey's Atlantis DLC sounds amazing

I've long wanted to visit Atlantis in an Assassin's Creed game, and hoped against hope Ubisoft's new ancient Greece-set Odyssey would do so. And now it's happening. One of Odyssey's new DLC expansions will take us to Atlantis and likely explore Plato's ancient myths surrounding Poseidon's sunken city of wonders; with so many legends around Atlantis, Ubisoft can have lots of fun and craft something really unique. The expansion is called The Fate of Atlantis and has a huge story arc that releases episodically in three chapters, following Ubisoft's new cadence. The chapters will release every six weeks. This is to ensure players are not only engaged for as long as possible, but gives devs enough time to craft huge storylines.

"Players will confront godly creatures and uncover the secrets of the legendary sunken city. In a surprising saga with many twists and turns, players will get even closer to Greek mythology and the First Civilization," said Odyssey game director Scott Phillips.

Wolfenstein 3 will happen, Bethesda says

| Sep 13, 2018 5:29 PM CDT

Wolfenstein's legacy will continue after MachineGames' new Youngblood spin-off releases, Bethesda confirms.

Wolfenstein 3 will happen, Bethesda says

MachineGames has done amazing things with the Wolfenstein franchise. Both The New Order and The New Colossus were extremely well done, featuring chaotic FPS mechanics with an engaging story. The games didn't just peer into a Nazi dystopia but stomped through it guns-a-blazing. The devs might be throwing a curve ball with their new spin-off Wolfenstein game Youngblood, which offers co-op FPS action as BJ Blazkowicz' twin daughters, but MachineGames will continue the brutal Nazi-slaughtering legacy with a Wolfenstein 3.

"Absolutely we're making a Wolfenstein III," Bethesda exec Pete Hines said in an interview with Metro. "They said on stage that they're taking a break from the larger story to do this thing. But we all have to see how that ends."

Diablo III tears into Nintendo Switch this November

| Sep 13, 2018 4:35 PM CDT

Diablo III will launch on the Switch handheld-console hybrid on November 2, 2018, Nintendo today announced.

Diablo III tears into Nintendo Switch this November

Ahead of today's big Direct showcase, Nintendo revealed Diablo III's upcoming Switch port will arrive just ahead of the big holiday rush. The port will be a GOTY edition called the Eternal Collection, which includes all previously released updates and DLC including Reaper of Souls and the Necromancer class pack. Diablo III's on-the-go version will take full advantage of the Switch's dual-platform capabilities by offering both online and offline local co-op with up to four players on a single Switch, as well as 4-player co-op with four consoles linked together via Bluetooth.

Blizzard says Diablo III will run at a smooth 60FPS regardless of how you play it. Handheld mode hits 720p 60FPS and docked will run at 960p 60FPS with minor variations. There's reports that amiibos will be supported in some way, and Blizzard has sadly confirmed save migration won't be included.

Switch firmware update 6.0.0 to roll out September 18th/19th

| Sep 13, 2018 5:00 AM CDT

About a week ago we heard about the rumors surrounding the coming Nintendo Switch firmware update 6.0.0, now the company has set the official release date for the upcoming update.

Switch firmware update 6.0.0 to roll out September 18th/19th

Last weeks rumors suggested that this coming firmware update would be adding in a messaging system for Nintendo Switch users. The information was sourced from the website NintendoSoup, who claimed that a well known "community hacker console hacker" named 'SciresM' "spilled the beans on Nintendo Switch's upcoming version 6.0.0 update." Looking towards the official Nintendo statement of update 6.0.0 there seems to be absolutely no information regarding a messaging system being implemented in the update, instead Nintendo Switch users will not be able to unlink their Nintendo accounts from their user profiles after the firmware update is complete.

According to the official Nintendo statement, "After installing the system update planned for September 18th, 2018 (Tuesday) at 5pm Pacific Time, it will no longer be possible to unlink your Nintendo Account from your Nintendo Switch user." This decision by Nintendo is so Switch users can't just give other user profiles access to Nintendo Switch Online when it releases, this is not a bad thing, think of it like a Netflix subscription. The firmware update will be conducted on the following date and time: September 18th, 2018 (Tuesday) 5pm to 8pm Pacific Time 8pm to 11pm Eastern Time.
