Fortnite's mysterious purple cube lands on Loot Lake, melts
Fortnite is set in a world that is in a constant change, with a mysterious purple cube that has been rolling all over the map for the last few weeks, and has now finally found a home inside of Loot Lake.
For the last few weeks, gamers have been following the mysterious cube around but have been wondering what the hell it is, and what the hell it'll do. Well, now we know that if you shot the cube it would push you away and damage you, but it also helped you if you stood close to it your shields would regenerate. If you jumped on the cube, you'd be flung into the air like you just jumped on super-jelly.
The cube is now sitting in Loot Lake and has lost some of its proximity effects like regenerating your shield, but it has kept one of its traits: it's still bouncy when you jump on it. Mix that in with Loot Lake which is a huge body of shallow water, with the lake post-cube now turning purple just like the cube. If you jump in Loot Lake, you'll fly into the air just like if you jumped onto the mysterious cube before it melted into the lake.

Halo 6 won't have real money lootboxes, 343i confirms
The next Halo game apparently won't use the REQ pack lootbox system found in Halo 5.
Yesterday I wrote a lengthy article on why I thought Halo 6 may repeat a lot of Halo 5's mistakes, but now 343 Industries has thankfully proven me wrong. Halo: Infinite (which is officially Halo 6) won't be monetized with seedy lootboxes in a bid to capitalize on engagement and the most addictive live service model.
"We're still working through final plans and will share more when we are ready, but I can definitely say that Halo Infinite will not include real-money loot boxes," 343 Industries' FPS studio head Chris Lee said on Twitter.

Switch's split D-pad makes NES gaming frustrating
If my experience with playing NES games on the Switch is any indicator then Nintendo is going to sell lots of classic NES gamepads.
A month after the Switch launched, I predicted that classic retro games would suffer quite a bit thanks to the console's split D-pad. Platformers that require precision jumps and attacks just don't play nicely with a sliced-up control interface (this is doubly true with old-school NES games). Instead of bringing triumph and cheer, playing NES games on the Switch on-the-go has brought me frustration and bewilderment. Finally, Switch owners get to play their childhood favorites on a new system...but it's not the same as you remembered it--Nintendo has made it needlessly harder.
The problem itself isn't just the JoyCon controller's D-pad, or Nintendo's weird decision to not let us customize button mapping so Super Mario Bros. 3 is actually fun and not a confusing mess. The issue is we have to learn new tricks while our brain constantly tells us to rely on old hardwired responses. Retro gamers are conditioned to be able to rock their thumb on-the-fly and move accordingly to evade attacks and adjust jumps mid-air. Zelda, which is grid-locked, is made needlessly frustrating thanks to the JoyCon D-Pad, but the analog stick isn't much better: I find myself pressing diagonally by accident and completely messing things up.

Switch Online NES: save states, visual modes and more
Nintendo's new Switch Online service lets you play classic NES games on the handheld-console hybrid, and here are some details you need to know.
In order to play the library of 20 NES games on the Switch you first need an active Switch Online subscription. Luckily you can just grab the free 7-day trial, but you'll have to enter credit card/PayPal info to access it. The subscription will bill you every month unless you turn off automatic renewal, too. To do that you'll need to go to the Switch Online hub on the eShop (the service doesn't have its own dedicated square or app on the main page). Also remember to log in every 7 days or else you can't play your library of games.
Here's how to turn off Switch Online's automatic billing renewal:

Red Dead Online mirrors GTA Online, has story co-op and PVP
Red Dead Redemption 2's online mode has been branded as Red Dead Online and is a direct evolution of the first game's live multiplayer.
Today Rockstar announced Red Dead Online, which sounds like it'll be the Western version of GTA Online. The mode is described as a "new online connected experience" that will use the sequel's huge open-ended Western frontier as a playground for mischief and mayhem, similar to how GTA Online is built around Los Santos.
Red Dead Online is essentially a more robust, engaging, and updated version of Red Dead Redemption's original multiplayer action, Rockstar says. But Red Dead Online isn't just about dueling at high noon or robbing banks: it'll feature both co-op and competitive play that span various narrative plot points. Like GTA Online it will continue evolving with content updates, and will be free to anyone who owns Red Dead Redemption 2.

PlayStation Classic packs 20 pre-loaded PS1 games, costs $99
Sony has just announced the new PlayStation Classic, a small retro console that packs 20 pre-installed PS1 games and even two replica PS1 controllers.
PlayStation Classic will be pre-loaded with PS1 classics like Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms. Sony hasn't announced what the other pre-installed games will be, but I'm hoping for some original Resident Evil and Tomb Raider action. I pumped some serious hours into those games at the time, it would be wild to see them sitting on the console if Sony wanted to blow retro minds.
The new PlayStation Classic is a huge 45% smaller than the original PlayStation, with the console not having an operating optical drive as it's there for show. The power button is still that, a power button while the reset button will suspend games when pressed. Pressing the OPEN button will change the virtual disc.

Bethesda boss talks next-gen Xbox and PS5 consoles
We know that AMD is working with Sony on the development of its Navi GPU architecture for the next-gen PlayStation 5 console, and while AMD has teased it's working on the 'secret sauce' for both Microsoft and Sony's new consoles, game developers have been pretty quiet.
Bethesda boss Pete Hines has come out acknowledging the new consoles in an interview with The Telegraph, where he talked about how big of a shift we can expect between the current-gen consoles and the new ones, as well as the shifts between Xbox/PS2, Xbox 360/PS3, and Xbox One/PS4.
Hines said: "I am curious to see what it looks like and how it's different. I'm privy to some stuff which obviously I can't really talk about, but there is also a lot that I'm not sure on what it's going to look like. And more importantly how big a shift we can expect. I feel like there was a shift from Xbox and PS2 to Xbox 360 and PS3 that was pretty demonstrable. Because we went from the old way to HD and the HD thing was so dramatic. It was night and day".

Metro Exodus new GeForce RTX real-time ray traced GI video
In the home stretch of NVIDIA's next-gen GeForce RTX graphics card launch, 4A Games and NVIDIA have teamed up for a new video of Metro Exodus running with NVIDIA RTX real-time ray traced global illumination, and it looks REALLY good.
Metro Exodus is running on a single GeForce RTX 2080 Ti graphics card and presumably running at 1080p which you can see that it sometimes, but not always, hits 60FPS. I'm sure that with improved drivers and optimization over the next few months leading up to Metro Exodus' launch, we'll see improved performance on all graphics cards, but a larger jump on the GeForce RTX cards, hopefully.
You can see that it looks absolutely amazing when it's turned on and running, a huge leap to the way lighting is handled with RTX off. The realism of the entire game increases as soon as it's turned on, changing the entire look and feel of the game. But it seems that the FPS drops to somewhere between 25-30FPS when RTX is enabled, and that's not going to be a good experience for those dropping $799-$1199 on a new graphics card.

YouTube moves gaming front and center
The YouTube Gaming app will soon be retired as the company makes key changes to its video game streams and content offering.
In a bid to re-capture fans and viewers, YouTube has re-vamped its gaming section on the homesite and will now show the most popular games and streams. The YouTube Gaming app will also be killed off next year, but its content will instead be folded into the main dedicated YouTube app. Essentially you won't have to download another app to watch specific videos.
"In March 2019, we'll retire the YouTube Gaming app and focus all of our gaming efforts on YouTube where we can reach our entire gaming community," reads the announcement post.

Halo 6 sounds like it'll repeat Halo 5's mistakes
Update: 343i confirms Halo 6 won't have real-money lootboxes.
Halo 5: Guardians is pretty much a bad Halo game. It might not be a bad game, but it's a bad Halo game that really does betray a lot of the series core tenants. But Microsoft and 343 Industries have to adapt to changes in the market--live services, microtransactions, engagement...bleh--in an effort to make money, which pretty much means Halo 6 should be a lot like Halo 5. Here's some of the things we've learned about Master Chief's upcoming adventure.
Yesterday we reported on a troubling job listing at 343 Industries. The listing strongly hinted Halo 6 (aka Halo: Infinite) will be monetized with microtransactions, which shouldn't be surprising. Microsoft made quite a bit of cash from Halo 5's randomized-gambling-lootbox REQ packs, and I long thought this would roll over to Halo 6.

Capcom shutters Dead Rising studio, cancels all projects
Capcom Vancouver's in-development Dead Rising game has been cancelled as the studio ramps down for closure.
In today's press release Capcom announced it's decided to kill off all future projects from its Vancouver branch. The Japanese games-maker is prepared for a 4.5 billion yen loss (about $40 million) in its 1H 2018 earnings as a result, which basically equates to the amount invested in the now-cancelled project. Capcom will now focus on its more lucrative franchises like Resident Evil and Devil May Cry, both of which have upcoming releases in the fiscal year. But the new Dead Rising game isn't the only casualty: Capcom Vancouver is actually closing down.
A company rep told Kotaku that the studio will operate under a "skeleton crew" until it closes in January 2019.

Dad/Toddler infiltrate prize machine, steals Nintendo Switch
Some could call it an inside job, others would call it a heist. Whatever definition you want to give this thievery is up to you, but a New Hampshire father has just been caught on camera sending his toddler daughter inside a prize machine to retrieve prizes. The father and his child managed to get away with a Nintendo Switch.
According to The Union Leader, security at a mall in Rockingham Park, New Hampshire was altered by employees from the store opposite the burglary. The report says that the employee heard "Two people came in and I heard them say, 'That's so unsafe.' So I went outside and all I saw was the toddler's head peeping out of the front of the machine."
