TL;DR: Seagate plans Mozaic 5-based 50TB drives for qualification shipments in late 2027 and wider availability in 2028, with nearline HDD output largely committed to hyperscalers through 2028 and some deals into 2029; Mozaic 4+ supports up to 44TB now, and Seagate targets ~100TB drives long-term via 10TB-per-platter research.

Seagate has outlined its roadmap for 50TB hard drives during its Q4 fiscal 2026 earnings call. The company confirmed the drives are on track for customer qualification shipments in late 2027, with broader availability expected in 2028. The announcement came alongside strong financial results, with the company posting $3.6 billion in revenue for the quarter, up 48% year over year, driven almost entirely by AI data centre and cloud storage demand.

The 50TB drives will be based on Mozaic 5, the third generation of Seagate's HAMR platform, which enables platters with more than 5TB of capacity each. Seagate's flagship drives use ten platters, putting a 50TB drive well within reach once that density threshold is crossed.

CEO Dave Mosley confirmed Mozaic 5 remains on track for qualification shipments in late 2027. The current Mozaic 4+ platform already supports drives up to 44TB, and Seagate expects Mozaic 4+ to account for 50% of its HAMR exabytes shipped by the end of 2026.

Seagate's CEO said the vast majority of its nearline HDD output is already allocated through 2028, with some customers now negotiating supply agreements extending into 2029. Cold storage has become critical for AI infrastructure, with hyperscalers using high-capacity HDDs to manage the long tail of AI workloads and provide persistent context for agentic AI systems across user interactions.

Looking further ahead, Seagate has a lab demonstration target of 10TB per platter around 2028, which would put single-drive capacities approaching 100TB. The broader roadmap runs from 50 to 60TB around 2030, past 80TB in the 2031 to 2032 timeframe, and beyond.

Frequently Asked Questions

Open a question for an answer from TweakTown's coverage of this news, or ask your own below.

Question #1

What platter density does Mozaic 5 achieve to enable 50TB drives and how many platters does Seagate use in its flagship drives?

Mozaic 5 enables platters with more than 5TB of capacity each, and Seagate uses ten platters in its flagship drives.
Question #2

Which customer segments are Seagate initially targeting for the 50TB Mozaic 5 drives?

Seagate is initially targeting hyperscale cloud providers, AI companies, and large enterprises for the 50TB Mozaic 5 drives. These qualification shipments are aimed at those enterprise and hyperscaler customers rather than consumers.

Have a question that isn't listed here? Ask below, and TweakBot will answer it.

One thing worth being clear about is who these drives are actually for, at least initially. When Seagate talks about customers and qualification shipments, it means hyperscale cloud providers, AI companies, and large enterprises. Consumer availability for drives at this capacity tier, if it comes at all, typically follows years after enterprise deployment.
