Battlefield V co-op mode won't arrive until after launch

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 28, 2018 10:35 PM CDT

The release of Battlefield V is right around the corner and as we get closer, we're finding out more information on DICE's next first-person shooter. We know that multiple modes won't be making the launch and another one of those will be Combined Arms, the co-op mode for Battlefield V.

Battlefield V co-op mode won't arrive until after launch

Battlefield Bulletin took to their Twitter account to announce the news that Combined Arms won't be launching with Battlefield V, with the four-player co-op experience sounding like one of the more exciting portions of Battlefield V. Lars Gustavsson, the Creative Director on Battlefield V explains Combined Arms: "Every now and then we do hear that, for new players, this can be an extremely daunting experience - almost overwhelming. To get in there, into that creative, all-out war sandbox can be challenging. Isn't there something more focused, a bit more intimate, almost, yet social, that I can do within Battlefield that fits me and my friends?"

Gustavsson continues: "This experience is really what we want friends to have together, and in that, we have a new system called the mission generator. It creates dynamic objectives and narratives in order to constantly keep that cooperative experience feeling fresh and challenging".

Cyberpunk 2077 could feature NVIDIA's new RTX technology

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 28, 2018 9:23 PM CDT

If there was a game that would be utterly mind blowing with real-time ray tracing it would have to be Cyberpunk 2077, which was recently hyped up again with its first gameplay video which you can check out below.

Cyberpunk 2077 could feature NVIDIA's new RTX technology

But according to a new leaked image of Cyberpunk 2077 and its settings window, we can see that other than the retro feel of its UI, there's optins for both NVIDIA ray tracing and HairWorks technologies. This would imply that Cyberpunk 2077 has support for RTX, and will be an even more special game for GeForce RTX 20 series graphics card owners.

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt RED is no stranger to working with NVIDIA technologies, with the company using NVIDIA HairWorks and HBAO+ technology in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Back on August 21, someone asked via a tweet to the official Cyberpunk 2077 account on Twitter the developers thoughts on NVIDIA RTX to which the developer tweeted: "Beautiful!"

Forza Horizon 4 can be pushed 'beyond Ultra' on the PC

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 28, 2018 8:35 PM CDT

It looks like Forza Horizon 4 is going to be quite special on the PC, with developers Playground Games teasing that not only are the minimum PC requirements lower than Forza Horizon 3 (an achievement in itself) but you can push the game "beyond Ultra" if you've got the right PC grunt.

Forza Horizon 4 can be pushed 'beyond Ultra' on the PC

All you'll need to play Forza Horizon 4 is a modest PC with a minimum of an Intel Core i3-4170 at 3.7GHz, 8GB of RAM and either an NVIDIA GeForce GT 740 or AMD Radeon R7 250X. Playground Games art director Benjamin Penrose he teased that the team is aiming the recommended spec at 60FPS and not 30FPS, a big change from Forza Horizon 3.

During an interview with PC Gamer, Penrose said: "We're now basing our recommended spec on 60 frames per second and not 30, which is a change from Forza Horizon 3. We're really happy with the stability and performance from launch this time round. And we've also got a whole bunch of new options you can push [your PC] to the extreme beyond Ultra, if you've got a very powerful PC. And of course we've got a load of other options in there, so you can build a view for your cameras, you also have access to the HDR option - the first time on PC for Forza".

Yakuza dev's new IP to be revealed at Tokyo Game Show 2018

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 28, 2018 6:59 PM CDT

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios, the development team behind SEGA's massively popular Yakuza series, will reveal its new IP next month at Tokyo Game Show 2018.

Yakuza dev's new IP to be revealed at Tokyo Game Show 2018

According to SEGA chief creative officer Toshihiro Nagoshi, the company's internal Yakuza studio will announce its big new IP series in September during Japan's big gaming event. The studio's new IP was confirmed back in April 2018, and has been in development and planning stages for three years alongside various Yakuza remasters and new iterations, Mr. Nagoshi said in a recent SEGA broadcast.

Official details about the new IP are light, but Mr. Nagoshi affirms it will be "very different" from what fans expect. This new game follows SEGA's long-term strategy to push out remasters and new wholly-owned IPs to bolster its overall games-selling business. The company says it wants to resurrect classic IPs and series for new games platforms--hence the re-releases and remasters--alongside creating fresh intellectual properties that carry sales for years go come.

Shovel Knight gets Super Smash Bros. style multiplayer mode

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 28, 2018 6:16 PM CDT

On the heels of a recent tease, Yacht Club Games announces a new game for its Shovel Knight Treasure Trove collection.

Shovel Knight gets Super Smash Bros. style multiplayer mode

Shovel Knight Showdown is a new multiplayer-focused add-on that closely resembles a 16-bit Super Smash Bros. Showdown allows 4 players to battle it out in local multiplayer SSB-style, but instead of classic Nintendo characters we have a roster straight from Yacht Club's beloved sidescroller. The game's multiplayer is offline only and features both co-op style action as well as straight free-for-all combat, and also has a fully-fledged campaign mode to boot.

Showdown will be free for all Treasure Trove owners and will be sold standalone for $9.99. The new game/add-on will release on a myriad of platforms excluding PS Vita and 3DS (Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Wii U, Sony PS4, Sony PS3, Xbox One, PC, Mac, Linux, & Amazon FireTV) but a launch date has yet to be announced.

Intel's Y and U-Series 8th Gen CPUs have finally landed

Today Intel launches their new Y and U-series mobile 8th generation processors, with more cores than previous generation Y and U-series processors. These new processors chime in at 15W and 5W TDPs, which is why they are targeted towards ultra-portable devices such as ultra-thin notebooks. In the U-series, we find three SKUs, the i7-8565U and i5-8265U both with four cores and eight threads, as well as a i3-8145U with two cores and four threads. Cache sizes go up by 2MB starting at 4MB for the i3 SKU up to 8MB for the i7. The crazy thing here is that the i7 turbos to 4.6GHz while the i5 and i3 go up to 3.9GHz. The Y-series SKUs include the i7-8500Y, the i5-8200Y, and the m3-8100Y and they are all two core four thread processors. The i7 turbos to 4.2GHz while the i5 goes up to 3.9GHz and the m3 goes to 3.4GHz. The U-series processors support 2133MHz LPDDR3 and 2400MHz DDR, while the Y-series clock in at 1866MHz LPDDR3.

There are new additions to the architecture, most notably very fast integrated WIFI support, USB 3.1 gen 2, and support for Optane memory. The new WIFI and USB 3.1 gen 2 (10Gbps) are the same as the desktop counterparts, with the WIFI going up to 1.73Gbps on the 160MHz band. The new Whiskey Lake-U CPUs are connected to the PCH through the OPI (on package DMI), and they are on the same package. There is also an updated quad-core digital signal processor which acts as the audio processor, so voice recognition and such are supported and improved. We are excited to see what vendors will do with these new processors, and with the higher core counts things should get interesting!

Torchlight Frontiers was showcased at GamesCom 2018, and since the reveal we now have some colorful and vibrant gameplay footage to view.

Torchlight Frontiers: 15 minutes of vibrant gameplay footage

The footage originates from YouTuber Havian, who had the chance of going hands of Torchlight Frontier. Havian explains that Torchlight Frontier will be shared MMO-like experience, players will be immersed within their private procedurally generated worlds that are spliced with online shared areas which other online players will be.

From the video and what Haivan explains, we can see that this demo of Torchlight Frontier is still in the very early stages of development. It can be seen that this demo is purely for players to see how the game plays even though it could be subject to change. Torchlight Frontier will feature its very own day and night cycle, this day and night cycle will coincide with different enemies/resources being available to players based on the certain time of day. Haivan explains this through his experience with the world, he says that the world that he is playing in had goblins spawn throughout the day, this later changed to skeleton once the level became night. Torchlight Frontiers releases on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC sometime next year.

AMD taps TSMC to make next-gen CPUs and GPUs on 7nm node

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 27, 2018 11:23 PM CDT

GlobalFoundries has announced it won't be moving forward with its push into 7nm, leaving that work to TSMC who has just secured contracts with AMD for everything Team Red is making on the 7nm node including next-gen CPUs and GPUs.

AMD taps TSMC to make next-gen CPUs and GPUs on 7nm node

AMD had already planned to use TSMC for their upcoming 7nm Vega GPUs, as well as the upcoming EPYC processors, but now everything else is being shifted to TSMC on 7nm thanks to GloFo. AMD's Chief Technology Officer, Mark Papermaster, has announced: "AMD's next major milestone is the introduction of our upcoming 7nm product portfolio, including the initial products with our second generation "Zen2" CPU core and our new 'Navi' GPU architecture".

He continued: "We have already taped out multiple 7nm products at TSMC, including our first 7nm GPU planned to launch later this year and our first 7nm server CPU that we plan to launch in 2019. Our work with TSMC on their 7nm node has gone very well and we have seen excellent results from early silicon. To streamline our development and align our investments closely with each of our foundry partner's investments, today we are announcing we intend to focus the breadth of our 7nm product portfolio on TSMC's industry-leading 7nm process. We also continue to have a broad partnership with GLOBALFOUNDRIES spanning multiple process nodes and technologies. We will leverage the additional investments GLOBALFOUNDRIES' is making in their robust 14nm and 12nm technologies at their New York fab to support the ongoing ramp of our AMD Ryzen, AMD Radeon, and AMD EPYC processors. We do not expect any changes to our product roadmaps as a result of these changes".

AMD loses another key player: Jim Anderson has now departed

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Aug 27, 2018 10:32 PM CDT

AMD hasn't stopped bleeding top shelf staff for over a year now with the departures of Raja Koduri, Chris Hook and Jim Keller... but now Jim Anderson is joining the good bye train.

AMD loses another key player: Jim Anderson has now departed

Anderson was the Senior VP of the Computing and Graphics Group, where he leaves AMD to joins Lattice Semiconductor. Saeid Moshkelani will be the replacement Senior VP and GM of AMD's Client Compute Group, which under its roof handles the APU and CPU portfolio for Team Red.

The issue here is that AMD just launched its Ryzen 2000 and Ryzen Threadripper 2000 series CPUs, with Anderson in lead position during those launches. Right after the launches, he leaves... which doesn't really look good for AMD, at least from the outside. Saeid Moshkelani on the other hand was instrumental in securing the semi-custom APU wins for AMD with both the Xbox and PlayStation consoles using AMD technology.

If you didn't already know: EA and DICE will be unleashing the Battlefield V open beta on September 4, for those who pre-ordered the game and are an Origin Access Premier member, Origin Access Basic or EA Access member. If you're not, you'll have to wait another 48 hours where it'll unlock on September 6.

Remember that Battlefield V will include NVIDIA's new RTX features in the game, with the new GeForce RTX 20 series providing real-time ray tracing abilities in the game. Ray tracing won't launch with the open beta but with the full game, something that we captured recently in Cologne, Germany during NVIDIA's Editor's Day 2018.

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey to adapt Herculean myths

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 27, 2018 7:05 PM CDT

Ubisoft is keen on blurring history and myth together in its latest ancient Greece-set Assassin's Creed game.

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey to adapt Herculean myths

No game set in 5th century BC Greece would be complete without quests that take players into the heart of exotic myths. The Greek pantheon alone is so diverse and is accompanied by countless legends and stories, and it'd be a sin not to use everything possible to amplify the splendor and suffering of the historical period. Assassin's Creed: Odyssey will leverage more than a few of these unique storied monsters like the fearsome gorgon Medusa or creatures straight out of Herakles' tales.

"Over the course of their Odyssey, players will encounter Legendary Animals, inspired by the Herculean myths including the Nemean Lion with impenetrable golden fur, the Lykaon Wolf, an evil beast cursed by the Gods themselves and Kallisto the bear, the angry mother of the Arcadians, to name a few," Ubisoft wrote in a recent Gamescom 2018 press release.

Cyberpunk 2077 deep in development, still in playtest phase

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 27, 2018 5:42 PM CDT

On the heels of today's big 48 minute Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay demo, CD Projekt RED is careful to remind gamers that the huge project is still very much in deep stages of development and shouldn't be done any time soon.

Cyberpunk 2077 deep in development, still in playtest phase

While Cyberpunk 2077 is certainly looking stylish, smooth, and decidedly next-gen, CD Projekt RED is far from finished. The studio still has a lot of work ahead before the gritty neon-lit shooter is ready to meet its 2021 deadline, and game director and studio head Adam Badowski says the final product may be quite different than the demo.

"What we're releasing today was recorded from a game deep in development," Mr. Badowski said in a press release comment. "Since many of the assets and mechanics in the current version of Cyberpunk 2077 are most likely to be modified, we initially decided to show this gameplay only to media."

Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay finally revealed

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 27, 2018 1:06 PM CDT

On the heels of its E3 2018 and Gamescom 2018 closed-doors demos, CD Projekt RED finally shows off gameplay for its massively anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 game..

Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay finally revealed

Ever since I started writing about Cyberpunk 2077 I always imagined what it'd look like. Everything I had read and reported on made CD Projekt RED's newest game out to be something big--much, much bigger than Geralt's legendary adventures, something beyond what series like Deus Ex could achieve. Now that I've seen official gameplay I'm even more excited than ever.

Today CDPR dropped a 48-minute gameplay demo for Cyberpunk 2077 that shows a number of different things, including combat, Night City's living, breathing worldscape and radiant NPCs, as well as some augmentation upgrades and dialog interactions. But mostly it showed off something we haven't seen up until now: the fruits of the developer's long, arduous labors.

Xbox All Access won't cost the same for everyone

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 27, 2018 12:15 PM CDT

Microsoft today confirmed its new ambitious Xbox All Access program, which combines either an Xbox One S or Xbox One X system alongside online subscriptions for a low monthly rate. But not everyone may qualify or be eligible for the program's lower cost terms.

Xbox All Access won't cost the same for everyone

Microsoft's new program is credit financed via a Dell Preferred Account, whose terms and monthly payments depend on an applicant's creditworthiness. This means the better credit you have the less you'll pay per month. The official Xbox All Access page says the initiative "starts at $21.99 and $34.99 per month" with 0% APR for an Xbox One S and Xbox One X, respectively, but that's for only well-qualified consumers. However, it appears no one will pay any upfront costs.

The 0% APR offer for 24 months is only available until December 31, 2018 and is apparently only available to existing Dell Preferred Account users, according to the program's terms. For new accounts, APR rates are variable and can range from 19.24% to 29.99%, and your particular rate is based on your credit.
