Of course Assassin's Creed: Odyssey will have NewGame+ mode

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 27, 2018 12:05 PM CDT

Like its Hellene predecessor Origins, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey will have a new game+ mode that allows users to keep playing long after they've beaten the main story. But then again this really shouldn't be a surprise.

Of course Assassin's Creed: Odyssey will have NewGame+ mode

When Ubisoft creative director Jonathan Dumont told Game Rant that yes, Odyssey will have a new game+ offering, and no, it won't be available at launch, both of these shouldn't be a big shock. It's absolutely welcome news to gamers everywhere, especially given Odyssey's branching RPG mechanics that will allow unique interactions and world-shifting events. Not only can we play Odyssey for longer but we can also take the paths we didn't take the first time around. This folds neatly into Ubisoft's current digital-first plan that ultimately wants gamers playing for as long as possible.

Like other major publishers, Ubisoft is banking strongly on engagement. But the French games-maker has found a unique way to mesh its live services into its singleplayer games by folding online-driven events and rotating quests into its games (look at AC: Origins and more recently Far Cry 5 as examples).

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey map shown, 62% bigger than Origins

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 27, 2018 10:11 AM CDT

Set in ancient Greece, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey will have less whole land masses and tons of islands to explore across the Aegean Sea.

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey map shown, 62% bigger than Origins

Ubisoft's latest odyssey into the past takes us to Violet-Crowned Athens during the Pelopponesian War, one of the most pivotal point of conflict in recorded human history. Staying true to the region's strengths--tons of rocky, craggy islands spread across the Aegean--AC: Odyssey will have a huge in-game map that's full of legends, myths, and exotic sights to explore. In fact, Odyssey's map is actually 62.5% bigger than its Hellenistic predecessor: according to Powerpyx, who got a hold of a full map, Odyssey's traverse-able world clocks in at 130km squared versus Origins' 80km squared.

A lot of this extra space is taken up by the Thracian and Aegean Seas, and rightly so, as these waterways were both integral to Athens' economy as well as its conflict with the Sparta-allied Peloponnese forces. Ubisoft has already highlighted just how important ship travel and naval combat is to Odyssey--think Odysseus' journey into strange lands meshed with ship-to-ship warfare--and the map shows some interesting points, including a kraken and various legends painted throughout Greece.

SoulCalibur VI could come to the Switch after initial launch

Jak Connor | Gaming | Aug 27, 2018 2:00 AM CDT

As we move closer to the release of SoulCalibur VI, fans of the series couldn't help but to ask if we will see the title ported over to the Nintendo Switch. A recent interview with the titles producer has revealed that we could possibly see a Switch adaptation after the initial release.

SoulCalibur VI could come to the Switch after initial launch

Producer Motohiro Okubo has sat down with Metro to discuss the upcoming title and where further development could lead the game in the future. During the interview, Okubo says that the development for SoulCalibur VI began longer than three years ago which surpasses the lifetime of the Nintendo Switch. Meaning that SoulCalbur VI has not been designed with the Nintendo Switch in mind, this doesn't mean the title can't receive a port though.

Okubo states: "SoulCalibur VI development started more than three years ago. And nobody knew anything about Switch back then. So, as a matter of fact we are not working on Switch, as of now. But of course, personally, I'm interested in the platform. So if the Unreal Engine can adapt to Switch, and evolve itself, then maybe the possibility will be more." SoulCalibur VI is planned for release on the Xbox One, PS4 and PC. The release date has been set for October 19th.

AMD unveils dual-Vega GPU card: 32GB HBM2, passively cooled

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 27, 2018 12:30 AM CDT

NVIDIA unveiled a truly next-gen Turing GPU last week with three new cards: GeForce RTX 2070, RTX 2080 and the RTX 2080 Ti... but what about AMD? Well, the company has announced their new dual-GPU Radeon Pro V340 accelerator, and it's very interesting to say the least.

AMD unveils dual-Vega GPU card: 32GB HBM2, passively cooled

The new Radeon Pro V340 is a dual-GPU accelerator that uses the Vega architecture with 56 Compute Units per GPU, and a huge 32GB of HBM2 with Error Correcting Code (ECC). This is not a gaming card and something destined for workstations and servers. Radeon Pro GM Ogi Brkic explains: "As the flagship of our new Radeon Pro V-series product line, the Radeon Pro V340 graphics card employs advanced security features and helps to cost effectively deliver and accelerate modern visualization workloads from the datacenter".

AMD is passively cooling the card which is thge most interesting thing here, and I'm actually a little blown away by this to be honest. The consumer Radeon RX Vega 56 and RX Vega 64 graphics cards have fans that even when spinning at 100% can't keep the card cool, as it drives past 80C even in a cool-operating environment. A passively cooled dual-GPU card is quite the engineering feat.

NVIDIA's new BFGD gaming TVs delayed until Q1 2019

Anthony Garreffa | Displays | Aug 26, 2018 11:52 PM CDT

NVIDIA had one of the more exciting products of the year with its Big Format Gaming Displays, but the company has now delayed the upcoming BFGDs according to HW.info and sources of theirs in the form of hardware partners during Gamescom 2018 last week. BFGDs are reportedly now expected to drop in Q1 2019 which is still a few months away.

NVIDIA's new BFGD gaming TVs delayed until Q1 2019

As for the price, the 65-inch 4K 120Hz HDR G-Sync BFGDs should be priced somewhere in the 4000-5000 EUR range which means we can expect a massive $4500-$6000. There's no exact pricing from NVIDIA or their monitor/TV partners on BFGD pricing, but that is very, very expensive.

However, a 65-inch 4K 120Hz panel wouldn't be cheap as all over 4K panels are maxing out at 60Hz. NVIDIA's upcoming Big Format Gaming Displays also feature a built-in NVIDIA Shield as well, but they're only worth a couple of hundred. The 4K 120Hz panel wouldn't be cheap, and I would say that the G-Sync module would be adding quite a lot to that price, it jacks the price of the new 27-inch 4K 144Hz HDR G-Sync panels up by a reported $500... so I imagine a huge first-of-its-kind TV would only see that cost skyrocket.

Battlefield V producer: ray tracing in consoles eventually

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 26, 2018 10:25 PM CDT

NVIDIA unveiled their next-gen GeForce RTX 20 series graphics cards last week, with the new Turing GPU architecture capable of real-time ray tracing in games like Battlefield V, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Metro Exodus. But Battlefield V in particular looked gorgeous, as you can see in our exclusive video below.

Battlefield V producer: ray tracing in consoles eventually

Now we have Battlefield producer David Sirland taking to Twitter to handle some questions about the RTX side of things, with Sirland working on Battlefield 2, Battlefield 4, and Battlefield 1's Incursions mode. Sirland said that real-time ray tracing is "freaking cool", and that from a "gameplay standpoint it will change a lot of things, so I hope standardization happens fast. I normally could care less about how stuff looks, as it results in worse gameplay".

DICE won't make Battlefield V's battle royale mode

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 26, 2018 2:31 PM CDT

DICE will focus on Battlefield V's core development while another studio handles the game's battle royale mode, but this is just how EA dev studios work.

DICE won't make Battlefield V's battle royale mode

The news was confirmed in a six-day-old Reddit post by a key player at the FPS studio. "[Battlefield V's] Royale is being made by a different studio, not DICE," said Ben Walke, Global Manager, Community Engagement at DICE. The mode's development will be a collaborative effort, which is nothing new for EA game studios; many high-profile games are collaborative works whose pieces are carved up and handed to specific teams that specialize in certain fields. The industry is also rife with examples of multi-studio dev, including 343i's upcoming Halo 6 and nearly every big Ubisoft game (especially Assassin's Creed titles).

Since EA makes games with so many moving parts, it's only natural other key devs are brought in to ensure everything runs smoothly both at launch and in the months beyond. Battlefront II was also a collaborative effort at EA; DICE made the bulk of the game whereas EA Motive and Criterion handled vehicles and space combat.

Control will be more 'adventurous,' Remedy says

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 25, 2018 3:09 PM CDT

Control, Remedy's new IP, should take more risks across the board--with its narrative, game mechanics, and overall tone--but that hasn't stopped the studio from making a new team for its next project.

Control will be more 'adventurous,' Remedy says

When Remedy's new Control game was announced at E3 2018 I saw its past represented quite clearly. Control has a very Quantum Break-style aesthetic and also seems to match some of the former game's powers, but the studio affirms its new third-person action title will be a lot more adventurous than its previous slate. Control's key narrative elements and story flow will still have that Remedy feel, however.

"With Control, it's redefining Remedy again," Remedy's PR rep Thomas Puha told PCGamesInsider.biz. "We made two very linear story-driven game and again we're going to have the story but in a game that's a lot more adventurous. Hopefully, it's something we can keep building more in the years to come."
