Sunset Overdrive invades Rocket League on the Xbox One

Jeff Williams | Gaming | Jan 22, 2016 8:32 AM CST

Rocket League hasn't quite release on the Xbox One just yet, which means it might not be the success that developer Psyonix wants it to be. In order to attract as many new players as possible, they're bringing some exclusive Sunset Overdrive themed stuff into the game.

It might not be much, but they've added in an Overcharge boost which is surprisingly delightful sounding, and the Fizzie car topper, shown above. "In short, Rocket League would naturally fit with the world of Sunset Overdrive," says Marcus Smith, the creative director for Sunset Overdrive. One might be about a hipster zombie apocalypse and the other about vehicle-borne soccer (everyone not in NA), they're both whimsical and quite entertaining with their particular styles.

The Sunset Overdrive flair is the latest exclusive content to appear for the Xbox One, following on the footsteps of Halo and Gears of War themed exclusive in-game items.

OVERKILL's The Walking Dead VR game will launch in 2017

Anthony Garreffa | Extended Reality (XR) | Jan 22, 2016 8:08 AM CST

If there's a game I want to try out, it would be OVERKILL's The Walking Dead. Starbreeze Studios has been showing off the VR shooter since E3 2015, but it has now confirmed it will be made available to gamers in 2017.

On top of this news, Starbreeze Studios announced it has received an investment from Smilegate, while securing an agreement for the release of the formers' upcoming titles in Asia, under the latters' guidance. This new partnership will see Starbreeze nab itself a 10-year right to develop, publish and distribute an all-new first-person, cooperative game based on Smilegate's CROSSFIRE franchise for Western markets, and distribution rights on the Smilegate platform.

The distribution rights are decent, as it'll allow Starbreeze to push out editions of PAYDAY 2 and OVERKILL's The Walking Dead into Asian markets, through the platform. In the press release, it notes: "OVERKILL's The Walking Dead will be expanded with more content where an Asian version will be developed for simultaneous launch with the western version. To maximize the new opportunities, Starbreeze, 505 Games and Skybound have decided to release the game in all markets during the second half of 2017. The partners are convinced this will pave the way to success, maximize revenues and cement it as a tent pole product for the next decade to come".

Project CARS developer teases upgrades for the Oculus Rift launch

Anthony Garreffa | Extended Reality (XR) | Jan 22, 2016 6:12 AM CST

Project CARS is still one of the best-looking games on the market, but it will get much better when VR support is delivered - with developer Slightly Mad Studios teasing it has a "whole bunch" of VR extras being prepared. The Oculus Rift launches on March 28, so we should expect VR support "as the CV1 goes live" according to Slightly Mad Studios.

SMS confirmed in a new thread on the Oculus subreddit that a new patch is being rolled out today, adding support for the public version of Oculus' v0.8 SDK. The team said: "We're rolling out a patch today that will bring the public version up to SDK 0.8. Internally we have been working for a few weeks now with the RC SDK, and as the final version will only be released when the CV1 hits the street, this means that any updates we've been working on will also roll out when that happens".

The team added: "So short term that means that you won't be getting any new features/fixes for Project CARS, but luckily it's only a very short time. As soon as the CV1 goes live, you'll be receiving a game update with a whole bunch of features, fixes, and optimizations".

Google has made $31 billion in revenue since Android launched

Anthony Garreffa | Software & Apps | Jan 22, 2016 2:28 AM CST

Just how profitable has Android been for Google since it acquired the company? Thanks to Oracle's lawyer in their court proceedings against Google, Bloomberg reports that Android has generated $31 billion in revenue and $22 billion in profits since it launched.

Most of the money made has been from Google ads shown on Android phones, and from Play Store revenue. Oracle attorney Annette Hurst said: "Look at the extraordinary magnitude of commerciality here". Google, until now, has been keeping Android earnings a secret, has requested the judge to seal the transcript from that part of the hearing.

Google says the Oracle lawyer received her information from internal, confidential documents marked "Attorney's Eyes Only", and that they should never have been released. Google wrote in its request to the judge: "That non-public financial data is highly sensitive, and public disclosure could have significant negative effects on Google's business".

Avatar 2 delayed, thanks to Star Wars: Episode VIII debuting next year

Anthony Garreffa | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Jan 22, 2016 12:53 AM CST

Disney recently announced it had delayed the release of Star Wars: Episode VIII until December 15, 2017 - which has now had a major affect on the sequel to Avatar, also due in Christmas 2017.

According to The Wrap, 20th Century Fox has now delayed Avatar 2 - even after James Cameron said they were targeting the holiday release window of 2017. But, the release of Avatar 2 has been up in the air for a while, rumored for 2014, 2015 and even 2016 - but now, who knows when James Cameron's next juggernaut will be released.

But, it makes sense that they wouldn't want to compete against Disney and the unstoppable Star Wars franchise, especially during the holidays. We're not just talking about the movie here either, but merchandise, and everything else that launches with Star Wars: Episode VIII, and Avatar 2. We should hopefully see Avatar 2 released in 2018, but at this rate it might be 2020 before Avatar 2 is released.

Justice League: Part One release date announced: November 17, 2017

Anthony Garreffa | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Jan 21, 2016 10:54 PM CST

After the huge week that Warner Bros. has had, with new TV spots for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the official trailer to Suicide Squad, and our first look at the Wonder Woman movie for 2017, WB has provided a release date for Justice League: Part One.

Justice League: Part One will be released on November 17, 2017 - a few months after Wonder Woman hits screens on June 23, 2017. Just a few days ago, Warner Bros. released its first concept art for Justice League, where Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg all appear - beautifully, I might add.

The big start to the DCEU started with Man of Steel but kicks off in a far bigger way with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which premieres on March 25, 2016.

AMD confirms its next-gen Zen CPUs to launch at the end of the year

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Jan 21, 2016 9:42 PM CST

We now know that AMD will be launching its Zen-powered Summit Ridge FX CPUs late this year, after being in development for the last two years.

AMD will launch its new processor families; Summit Ridge and Bristol Ridge, later this year - both hitting the enthusiast and mainstream markets. The news came from AMD's recent earnings call - where they reported a 28% decline in revenue. The Zen architecture is super-exicting, as it will be a completely revised design, more CPU cores, Simultaneous Multithreading Support (SMT), high-bandwidth, low-latency cache on the FinFET process, and so much more.

What if the Alien Isolation devs made a Jurassic Park survival game?

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jan 21, 2016 6:49 PM CST

The sheer, calculated terror of being hunted by a sleek and cunning Xenomorph in Alien Isolation proved that Creative Assembly is at the top of the survival genre. But what if the devs applied that macabre mastery over to a new IP like, say, Jurassic Park?

What if the Alien Isolation devs made a Jurassic Park survival game?

In a recent NeoGAF post, forum user lowhighkang_LHK pitched a deliciously devious premise: Creative Assembly should make a Jurassic Park survival game. The user goes on to justify just how brilliant the game could be, weaving in other games like the brutality of Dino Crisis on the original PlayStation to illustrate certain points. Just about everyone on the site agrees, and if enough people talk about it, maybe Creative Assembly will catch wind of the hype.

Just think about the already-existing parallels between the Xenomorph and Jurassic Park's velociraptors: both are extremely intelligent, and will adapt to their environments while learning from mistakes. Both are ruthless and animalistic, inspiring a kind of innate fear that only true predators can.

It's good to be bad in the Elder Scrolls Online Thieves Guild

Jeff Williams | Gaming | Jan 21, 2016 6:00 PM CST

A new trailer from Bethesda shows us an inside look into some of the features that'll be in the upcoming Thieves Guild DLC pack for Elder Scrolls Online.

And it's definitely good to be bad. Larceny never looked so lucrative, and who knew that you could get away with so much. But then again, pick-pocketing even has it's challenges in the Elder Scrolls universe too. And in this expansion you'll have a new zone, new story-based content and a 12-player mode, presumably to test your pick-pocketing and robbery skills against others.

The news release makes it sound like such a glorious occupation, "As their newest recruit, you'll sneak along rooftops, steal from the shadows, and recover lost treasures to help to restore the guild's reputation." As if you'll quickly become the anti-hero. But of course, let's have you decide how great it is. The new features of the upcoming DLC are listed below.

Tom Clancy's The Division PC requirements leaked, GTX 560 or HD 7770

Jeff Williams | Gaming | Jan 21, 2016 5:31 PM CST

The PC specification requirements for Tom Clancy's The Division seemed to have leaked to the Internet thanks to Ubisoft Russia. And the kicker is that they don't seen ti require much, even at the recommended specs.

So essentially you need a PC that has a discreet GPU in order to play it, and it should likely perform somewhat well. And we've seen that there are a fantastic array of options to change, meaning it could scale up and down the range of available hardware. Once we get our hands-on it and start testing, we'll take a look at just how good this beta can look. Specs needed are below.

Hitman will run on DirectX 12, may support Vulkan

Sean Ridgeley | Gaming | Jan 21, 2016 5:05 PM CST

IO Interactive's lead render programmer Jonas Meyer will be hosting a talk at this year's GDC in March focusing on Hitman's DirectX 12-powered renderer. Though there've been whispers here and there about the upcoming stealth game supporting Microsoft's new API, this is the only positive proof we know of.

The talk -- named "Advanced Graphics Techniques Tutorial Day: Rendering Hitman with DirectX 12" -- is said to offer a deep look into how the renderer works and how it's used with Hitman specifically. The goal: teaching the audience "how to write a fast and efficient DirectX 12 / Vulkan engine, and how to use the new [hardware] features to implement new graphics techniques", indicating Vulkan support could be in the mix, too.

Behind the scenes look at Gillian Anderson in Star Citizen is darling

Jeff Williams | Gaming | Jan 21, 2016 4:23 PM CST

Cloud Imperium Games has released a unique behind the scenes look at Gillian Anderson in her role as Captain McLaren in Star Citizen.

It's kind of exciting to see her in a role that's different than what we might usually see her in. And even in the mostly sterile and bland production environment she brings her character alive in some pretty fascinating ways. And really, it's great to watch her covered in dots acting very serious.

Chris Roberts has recruited some of the very best actors in the business, reaching out to the A-list to hopefully make the single-player campaign of Star Citizen into more than just the typical AAA experience. There's already plenty of criticism concerning whether or not it'll ever be completed, though Alpha 2.1 has at least provided a great glimpse into what to expect in the future.

Tom Cruise to fight 'The Mummy' in franchise reboot

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Jan 21, 2016 3:56 PM CST

Universal Pictures have been wanting to get a feature film reboot of 'The Mummy' franchise since the disappointing 2008 sequel 'Tomb of the Dragon Emperor' for a number of years, and now that Tom Cruise is officially on board it should progress pretty quickly, with a June 2017 release date set by the studio.

According to Variety, Cruise won't just star, but will also "play a major part in development". Sofia Boutella has also signed on to play the titular role of the mummified undead.

The film will act as a vehicle to re-introduce the world to Universal's stable of classic monster characters, including The Invisible Man, Dracula and Frankenstein which are expected to culminate in a Marvel style cinematic universe.

New video shows amiibo for Zelda: Twilight Princess in action

Jeff Williams | Gaming | Jan 21, 2016 2:58 PM CST

Finally Nintendo has released a video showing us how the cool Wolf Link amiibo is going to work with the new Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess coming out on the Wii U.

We already knew that the figure would unlock exclusive content, thanks to the listing on Amazon, but now we know how it works and we get to take a quick glimpse at the exclusive "Cave of Shadow" area.

That dungeon gives players access to a series of challenges that require you to use Wolf Link and Midna's abilities to defeat an increasingly larger wave of enemies. Once the challenge is completed, your results are recorded in the amiibo and you can go back to try to beat your previous record.

32 percent of Android users run 4.0 or older, vulnerable to exploit

Sean Ridgeley | Mobile Devices | Jan 21, 2016 1:00 PM CST

A new study from Duo Labs has revealed some concerning data on security pertaining to Android users.

It turns out 32 percent of them run version 4.0 of the operating system or older. This is especially worrisome because this makes them more susceptible to the Stagefright vulnerability, unlike later versions which added or supported security features to fight it.

The team also found 1 in 3 Android owners do not use lockscreen passcodes, compared to iPhone owners who are apparently much more concerned about security (1 in 20 don't use a lockscreen passcode). More, just 10 percent of Android phones utilize pre-boot passcode device encryption; 20 percent are running 5.1.1 and not 6.0.1, and 5 percent are jailbroken (versus 0.4 percent of jailbroken/rooted iPhones).

Introducing Brave, the new browser that blocks ads by default

Derek Strickland | Internet & Websites | Jan 21, 2016 12:34 PM CST

Ex-CEO and co-founder of Mozilla Brenden Eich has revealed Brave, a new kind of internet browser that wants to disrupt ad-based web surfing.

Introducing Brave, the new browser that blocks ads by default

Brave essentially acts as a filter for the traditional web surfing experience: the browser blocks all targeted ads and replaces them with non-invasive "anonymous" ads. The browser will be released across iOS, Android, Windows and Mac OSX, and is part of the company's "high-precision and privacy" platform, which is powered by a virtually-hosted cloud infrastructure. Brave not only blocks existing ad structures, but also denies cookies that can identify users. The best part is that Brave won't store your user data at any point, ensuring privacy.

"We are building a new browser and a connected private cloud service with anonymous ads," Eich said on the company page. "Brave browsers block everything: initial signaling/analytics scripts that start the programmatic advertising "dirty pipe", impression-tracking pixels, and ad-click confirmation signals. By default Brave will insert ads only in a few standard-sized spaces."

New Star Wars Battlefront DLC coming for free with maps and more

Jeff Williams | Gaming | Jan 21, 2016 12:03 PM CST

New details concerning upcoming free content for Star Wars Battlefront seem to have emerged via a video from EA Brazil. According to the video, we can expect a lot of new content.

Among that content should be a new map set on Tatooine, a few new outfits for Luke Skywalker and his sister Leia and even some new game modes that have been heavily requested by fans; private matches. There'll also be daily challenges and even community events hosted by EA themselves.

Star Wars Battlefront was a little light on content when it originally released, which was off-putting to fans who wanted, and expected, a wider variety of maps, weapons and game modes to keep things interesting in the long run. Even a few months after it was released, there was hardly anyone playing, which speaks to the lack of interesting content. It just got old really quickly, despite being the first Star Wars game in some time.

Battlefront III prototype leaks online, playable on modded Xbox 360's

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jan 21, 2016 11:33 AM CST

With EA's Star Wars: Battlefront reboot being soulless and hollow, gamers have often thought about how different things would be if Free Radical's Battlefront III sequel hadn't been cancelled. Now we can sate some of our curiosity as a prototype for the scrapped shooter has been leaked online, showing off some key features of a game that never was.

Battlefront III prototype leaks online, playable on modded Xbox 360's

New info on the Battlefront III prototype was originally shared on a Reddit thread, and users have successfully booted up the leaked files to reveal what looks to be authentic gameplay.

The build can only be played on special modded and developer Xbox 360 hardware, however, so you'll need some specific gear to try it out.

Some others feature Hybrid-Dynamic tuned Balanced Armature Array (HDBA) for a "rich, full frequency response with substantial bass."

Pre-load The Division Beta 48 hours before it starts, be the first in

Jeff Williams | Gaming | Jan 21, 2016 10:06 AM CST

The Division's beta test is scheduled for next week and you can make sure you're in on the action as soon as possible by pre-loading it 48 hours in advance.

The information regarding pre-loading actually came from the official French page for The Division, explaining that the 48-hour pre-loading can commence on all platforms. That means that you can prepare yourself on January 26th for the Xbox One, and January 27th on the PS4 and the PC. You'll need at least 26.25GB of space on the PC.

The relatively closed beta test is available only to those that have pre-ordered The Division or those that have been explicitly invited, so not everyone will be able to join in on the fun. But remember that this is a beta test, and Ubisoft is intent on testing infrastructure of the underlying online aspect and to have people see what kind of other issues are in the game. They want to use the feedback we'll provide.
