Jak Connor | Software & Apps | Jul 9, 2018 1:00 AM CDT

Everyone remembers the Pokemon GO craze, the app reached massive numbers pushing the active player base to 45 million users in just one month of its release. The massive explosion of the app has brought in huge amount of revenue, with reports now saying it has reached $1.8bn by the second year anniversary.

Pokemon GO has made $1.8 billion

SensorTower has reported that since its release on the 6th of July 2016, Pokemon GO on average earned a whopping $2 million per day, this then lead to the app reaching $950 million in revenue by 2016. According to the figures released by SensorTower, Google Play holds 1st place for generating revenue with 58%, iOS comes in at just 42%. The statistics also showcased "All-Time Player Spending" and how much each country generated respectively. The following is ranked in order of the top 5 countries: The United States leads with $607m, Japan with $500m, Germany with only $96m, Great Britain with $77m and Taiwan lastly with $48m.

Judging by the figures, we can see that the United States holds the lions share with 30%, Japan follows closely behind with 28%. Germany makes up 5%, Great Britain with 4% and Taiwan with just 2%. Drake is the first artist with 1 billion streams in a week

Anthony Garreffa | Software & Apps | Jul 9, 2018 12:07 AM CDT

Drake has made the history books once again with his fifth album Scorpion, which was streamed over 1 billion times in its first week online. The record was confirmed by Drake's record label Republic Records, with The Verge.

Drake is the first artist with 1 billion streams in a week

In the US alone, Scorpion was streamed 745.92 million times in the first 7 days of release according to Billboard. Drake beat out Post Malone's Beerbong & Bentleys which had 431 million streams in its first week when it arrived earlier in the year. Scorpion broke every single-day record for Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music with a huge 300 million streams in its first 24 hours of release.

As for physical sales, Scorpion sold just 732,000 copies in the US which secured Drake the spot for largest debut of 2018. Drake also has 4 of the top 10 streaming weeks EVER for an album, which is another huge achievement.

Chinese company making x86 CPUs based on AMD Zen tech

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Jul 8, 2018 11:23 PM CDT

Things just got very, very interesting in the CPU space as Chinese manufacturer Hygon has just announced it is starting the production of Chinese-designed "Dhyana" x86-based processors that are reportedly based on AMD's Zen CPU microarchitecture.

Chinese company making x86 CPUs based on AMD Zen tech

How did this happen? According to TH, there is an x86 IP licensing deal struck between AMD and its Chinese partners. AMD has said it doesn't sell final chip designs to Chinese based companies, but the IP licensing deal allows them to sell their own processors made specifically for the server market in China.

These new Dhyana CPUs are as close as they can be to AMD's own EPYC server processors, with the only difference between the CPUs being their unique vendor IDs and family series numbers. Mic drop moment from AMD against Intel. But what about US laws against this type of thing, as we all know Chinese companies rip designs and IP all the time.

DeepMind's AI can play Quake III Arena like a human

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Jul 8, 2018 10:37 PM CDT

I pumped in some serious hours into Quake III Arena when it first launched, so I hereby challenge the DeepMind AI to a game of Quake III and I know I'll destroy it.

DeepMind's AI can play Quake III Arena like a human

As for the story itself, the OpenAI bots were playing Dota 2 last week and moved into the FPS world with Quake III where their training agents were able to beat humans in a game of capture the flag in Quake III Arena. The training agents had to run through the 3D environment of Quake III which isn't the easiest for code to do, but DeepMind's researchers train the AI through reinforcement learning: training by trial and error, in a larger scale.

The AI bots aren't provided instructions on how to play the game in question, so it's serious trial and error on how to win. It takes up to 500,000 games lasting 5 minutes each to train the DeepMind AI bots, and they don't just learn the basic rules of CTF, they'll also define strategies like guarding their flag, camping enemies' bases, and following teammates so that you can attack the enemy in larger numbers.

Intel's next-gen Whiskey Lake-U chips teased: 4.5GHz for 15W

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Jul 8, 2018 9:40 PM CDT

Intel is expected to launch their 8th-gen Whiskey Lake-U processors, with the new range of mobile CPUs to succeed the current-gen Kaby Lake-R processors. Intel will continue using its 14nm++ process, driving CPU clock speeds up and keeping the power consumption low.

Intel's next-gen Whiskey Lake-U chips teased: 4.5GHz for 15W

Whiskey Lake-U will include the flagship Core i7-8565U that will succeed the Core i7-8550U, while the mid-range Core i5-8265U succeeds the Core i5-8250U. Both of these processors will be made on the 14nm++ note, with Intel pushing CPU clock speeds up through the optimized process design... but other than that, there's nothing else really new here.

What we will be getting from Intel with the 4C/8T chip in the new Core i7-8565U is an increase of 200MHz base CPU clock and 100MHz increase in the Turbo Boost frequency. As for the Core i5-8265U which is also a 4C/8T part, with a much larger increase in its Boost clock of 500MHz, while the base clock stays the same as the previous-gen Core i5-8250U.

COD: Black Ops 4 rumor: supports 60 players in Battle Royale

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jul 8, 2018 8:06 PM CDT

Activision announced Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 not so long ago now but the company has been silent on its rumored Battle Royale mode, but we have no idea how many players will take place in the fight of Battle Royale, if it ships with BO4.

COD: Black Ops 4 rumor: supports 60 players in Battle Royale

But now there is a new screenshot that has been leaked that teases Black Ops 4 will have between 2-60 players in Battle Royale mode. This isn't too bad, but it doesn't compete against the 100 players in other Battle Royale games like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. We are just going by these rumors for now, and I'm sure once Activision fully detail COD: Black Ops 4 we'll find the full skinny on its purported Battle Royale mode.

On a side note, I think it's very interesting that the Quake III Arena engine powered game is able to handle 60 players at all. Activision need to move to a new engine, something that hasn't been hacked apart and back together again, as the Q3A engine was made before 1999... it's nearly 20 years old now and still being used in multi-billion-dollar franchises like Call of Duty.

Cryptojacking spikes 1189% in Q1 2018, overtakes ransomware

Anthony Garreffa | Cryptocurrency & Mining | Jul 8, 2018 3:26 AM CDT

We all know how much cryptocurrency has had an impact in the world as it hit us, PC gamers, the most: graphics cards. They disappeared from shelves shortly after seeing hyperinflation-like prices in the huge crypto mining boom, but another explosion that happened because of crypto was all of the cryptojacking in the months following.

Cryptojacking spikes 1189% in Q1 2018, overtakes ransomware

According to data from McAfee Labs, cryptojacking has overtaken ransomware attacks. Raj Samani, the chief scientist at McAfee explains: "Attackers targeting cryptocurrencies may be moving from ransomware to coin miner malware, which hijacks systems to mine for cryptocurrencies and increase their profits".

McAfee's report is startling, as it explains: "Coin miner malware grew a stunning 629% to more than 2.9 million known samples in Q1 from almost 400,000 samples in Q4. This suggests that cybercriminals are warming to the prospect of monetizing infections of user systems without prompting victims to make payments, as is the case with popular ransomware schemes".

Surgeon Simulator teaser trailer suggests Switch release

Jak Connor | Gaming | Jul 7, 2018 2:00 AM CDT

A new teaser trailer has been released by Bossa Studios for their title Surgeon Simulator. The teaser comes in the form of "Bone-Shattering news" as a player flicks the 'switch.'

Surgeon Simulator teaser trailer suggests Switch release

The video starts off with the classical Surgeon Simulator hand navigating it's way poorly over a shelf, knocking over several different objects before stopping at a light switch. The hand then proceeds to try and press the light switch, before failing a few times the hand eventually succeeds ending the video with "coming soon."

The fact that there is a light switch followed by a 'coming soon' heavily suggests that Surgeon Simulator could be on it's way to the Nintendo Switch. Currently there is no known release date for a Nintendo Switch version, but for those that cannot wait the title is already available on PC, PS4, iOS and Android devices. New York police have confirmed this news to The Hollywood Reporter, who have said that Ditko left no family behind and was actually dead for two whole days before being found.

For those that aren't familiar with who Ditko is, they would of certainly heard about his work. Ditko co-created Spider-Man with Stan Lee back in 1961, two years later in 1963 he created Dr. Strange. Both of which have now grown into some of the best superhero films to date. Ditko eventually left Marvel under a unknown reason, here is what he had to say about the matter "I know why I left Marvel, but no one else in this universe knew or knows why. It may be of a mild interest to realize that Stan Lee chose not to know, or hear why, I left."

Nintendo Switch Skyrim mods most likely won't be happening

Jak Connor | Gaming | Jul 6, 2018 2:00 AM CDT

After the release of Bethesda's Skyrim on the Nintendo Switch, gamers have formed a community around the now handheld title and are crying out for more community support. This of course comes in the form of mods, will Skyrim on the Nintendo Switch see mod support?

Nintendo Switch Skyrim mods most likely won't be happening

Bethesda's Executive Producer and Director, Todd Howard sat down with Gameslab to discuss this topic. Throughout the discussion, the Nintendo Switch version of Skyrim was brought up and Howard said that the community "asked for mods, they asked for Creation Club - 'When are we getting more stuff?" In response to that Howard recognized the fact that there is large community around the Nintendo Switch version of Skyrim and that him and his team "haven't supported the way we'd like."

Howard was asked how he was going to progress forward with community support and he answered with "Right now we're doing nothing" and changed the subject by saying that his teams are already occupied on other projects. "People, they're on other things. Our Switch group did Fallout Shelter ... and that's done really well. I'm surprised at how well it's done."

Ben Simmons to feature on the cover of NBA 2K19 in Australia

Jak Connor | Gaming | Jul 6, 2018 12:42 AM CDT

For the first time in NBA 2K games history, the cover art will be different for Australians as Ben Simmons - the Australian bred sportsman takes the stage as the featured athelte.

Ben Simmons to feature on the cover of NBA 2K19 in Australia

Simmons originates from Melbourne, Australia and began his noticeable career as an Australian rules football player who then went onto college basketball at LSU, before joining the NBA draft and receiving the number 1 overall pick. Simmons continued his career with more than 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists, resulting in him receiving the award 2017-2018 NBA Rookie of the Year award. On the cover we can see quotes close to Simmons' life, "Loyalty," "Family," "Melbourne," "Unstoppable," and "Triple Double."

Being born in Melbourne, Simmons has earned the featured cover art for NBA 2K19 but will only be enjoyed by Australians and New Zealand owners. The game will be coming with a double-sided inlay featuring Giannis Antetokounmpo, so swapping it around shouldn't provide much of an issue if you so choose. NBA 2K19 is set for release on September 11th on the PC, Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. For further information visit the official NBA 2K website here.

Netflix mulling over 'Ultra' subscription for $17 per month

Anthony Garreffa | Software & Apps | Jul 5, 2018 10:36 PM CDT

Netflix is reportedly set to offer up a new subscription that would fall under "Ultra" branding, a new plan that is above the Base, Standard, and Premium susbcriptions.

Netflix mulling over 'Ultra' subscription for $17 per month

The purported new Ultra subscription would cost $17 per month, up from the $14 per month that the current Premium plan offers, but knocks HDR away from Premium and leaves it to Ultra. So it effectively means the Premium plan is $3 cheaper per month but you don't have HDR, so the question becomes: why didn't Netflix just make a Premium HDR subscription for $3 more per month.

The names might change, but CNET has confirmed with Netflix that the new $17 per month pricing is indeed real. A spokesperson for Netflix explained: "In this case, we are testing slightly different price points and features to better understand how consumers value Netflix. Not everyone will see this test and we may not ever offer the specific price points or features included in this test".

AMD Ryzen 3 2300X: 4C/4T processor tested at 5.5GHz on LN2

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Jul 5, 2018 8:35 PM CDT

AMD is set to have one of the most exciting quad-core CPUs of the last generation or so with its upcoming Ryzen 3 2300X processor, which has found its way into the hands of XFastest, who also grabbed the Ryzen 5 2500X that is around the corner.

AMD Ryzen 3 2300X: 4C/4T processor tested at 5.5GHz on LN2

The upcoming Ryzen 3 2300X is a 4C/4T part with no multi-threading support, 3.5GHz base CPU clock and 4.0GHz turbo CPU clocks. This is all made on the 12nm node with precision boost overdrive, and XFR enhanced. XFastest tested the Ryzen 3 2300X and its 4C/4T of budget CPU power under LN2 cooling, where the team reached a peak of 5663MHz (5.6GHz) but it wasn't stable for benchmark runs, so they dropped down to 5585MHz (5.5GHz) and it was fine.

Cinebench results for the overclocked Ryzen 3 2300X reached 895 points in the multi-core test, and 233 points in the single-core tests. CPU-z benchmarks reveal the 2300X scored 642.3 points in single-thread, and 2553.2 in multi-threaded benchmarks. If we compare this against the stock results of 690 points in Cinebench against 895 points when overclocked, we can see the Ryzen 3 2300X is knocking down some performance doors.

Left 4 Dead 3 rumors swirl, but don't get too excited

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jul 5, 2018 7:33 PM CDT

If there was a sequel that I wish was announced out of the blue it would be Left 4 Dead 3, but we all know that's not happening. The rumors began a few days ago with some gaming sites hyping Left 4 Dead, as its developer Turtle Rock Studios is looking for developers for its unannounced AAA game from a "globally-known franchise".

Left 4 Dead 3 rumors swirl, but don't get too excited

Of course the hype train dives right into Left 4 Dead 3, but Valve own the rights to that - and Turtle Rock Studios has been working on Oculus Go games for months as Valve News Network explains in the above video. The developer has a bunch of job openings right now with 17 positions up for grabs for animators, character concepts, environment artists, and a senior level designer.

Turtle Rock Studios is looking for someone that works with "modern FPS engines" and need to "demonstrate experience working on competitive FPS" games. What could it be? Who knows... as the studio is working on plenty of Oculus Go games, so it would make sense for something in VR. But would it be something like Left 4 Dead VR? Nope. But what other "globally known franchise" is Turtle Rock Studios tooting its horn over?

Fortnite players trolled, download aimbot but get malware

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jul 5, 2018 6:28 PM CDT

Seriously, guys? Fortnite players on the PC have fallen for malware in what they thought were cheats for the game that would've given them not just an aimbot, but free V-Bucks.

Fortnite players trolled, download aimbot but get malware

The new malware was discovered by Rainway, which saw malicious Windows adware hiding in the cheat which once installed, changes Windows to server its own rogue ads, which is otherwise known as a man-in-the-middle attack. This sees the Fortnite cheat software loading its own root certificate, and then routing all internet traffic through a proxy.

The malware was downloaded 78,000 times with Rainway receiving 381,000 reports meaning that a large sum of gamers fell for this attack. It's definitely not the first, and it definitely won't be the last considering Epic Games is raking in piles of real money from Fortnite each month, with the game making an incredible $318 million in the month of May alone.
