NVIDIA's new Shield TV Pro spotted on shelves ahead of launch

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Oct 25, 2019 7:32 PM CDT

We should expect NVIDIA to unveil its next-gen Shield TV family in the coming days, with an official reveal reportedly set to take place on October 28.

NVIDIA's new Shield TV Pro spotted on shelves ahead of launch

But now Reddit user Bubba_nosferatu has spotted NVIDIA's new Shield TV and Shield TV Pro at his local Best Buy, and going as far as buying one. He posted photos of both the new stick-like Shield TV that will cost $150 and the higher-end Shield TV Pro at $200.

The stick-like Shield TV is a big difference, like a super-powered Chromecast with an HDMI port and higher-end internals. Both the new Shield TV 'stick' and Shield TV Pro will have Dolby Vision Atmos technology support, 4K HDR support, and AI upscaling technology.

Micron announces entry into portable SSD market with Crucial X8

Shannon Robb | Storage | Oct 25, 2019 6:44 PM CDT

Portable SSDs have been a thing for a while now with newer NVMe drives taking flight with the introduction of Thunderbolt 3. However, Crucial is putting the power of USB 3.2 Gen 2 to work on the new X8.

Micron announces entry into portable SSD market with Crucial X8

As shown, the drive is a smaller unit, likely housing an M.2 2280 drive internally. The exciting part is that this unit uses USB protocol, which opens up the compatibility to several devices and even game consoles. The stated speed is up to 1050 MB/s sequential and requires a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port. A standard USB 3.2 Gen 1 (USB 3.0) port will allow for half that speed or a 5Gb/s interface.

The Crucial X8 is tested with drops of up to 7.5' which means it should be able to handle being tossed in book bags or laptop bags without much worry. It comes with a Type-C cable and a Type-A cable to maximize compatibility for the X8 and ensure it should fit most anything you would want to use it on. The listed compatible devices are as follows:

New Intel 10980XE review shows AMD Ryzen 9 3900X may actually stomp it

Shannon Robb | Processors | Oct 25, 2019 4:06 PM CDT

I recently reported on the rumor that Intel's new flagship HEDT CPU, the i9-10980XE, was getting walloped by the mainstream AMD Ryzen 9 3950X which is yet to be released.

New Intel 10980XE review shows AMD Ryzen 9 3900X may actually stomp it

Well, the story has gotten a lot more grim for the i9-10980XE. A recent review from Lab501 shows that the Skylake derivative (again) that is the silicon for the i9-10980XE is showing its age. The much more spry or agile 7nm Ryzen third-gen is now effectively curb-stomping the new Intel flagship. The worst part about all of this is that the third-gen Zen 2-powered CPUs, which are dominating the new flagship, are the mainstream parts. These are what should be the equivalent of the Core i7 & i9 Z390 parts.

We have yet to see the expected or real-world performance from the third-gen Threadripper parts, but if it holds a candle to the 3900X and the reported 3950X parts with the inclusion of high-speed memory and quad-channel memory, it could be a monster. But I digress, let's get back to what the data at hand shows.

Payday 2 is back with new paid and free content

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 25, 2019 1:44 PM CDT

Overkill resumes production of Payday 2 with both free and paid expansion content to help fund Payday 3.

Payday 2 is back with new paid and free content

Today Starbreeze announced Payday 2 is back in business. Originally retired in late 2018, Overkill is now picking the game back up and plans to revitalize it with a bunch of new updates. Some of these new updates will cost money, which of course breaks Overkill's original promise of free content.

The reasoning for this is simple: Starbreeze is suffering crushing financial losses and needs to recoup some cash fast. Any revenue generated from Payday 2 will also help Payday 3's development, which is set to release sometime between 2022-2023 on next-gen consoles.

New Viking Assassin's Creed may be next-gen console launch game

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 25, 2019 11:32 AM CDT

Just as we speculated back in April, Ubisoft strongly indicates the next Assassin's Creed game will harness the full might of Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Project Scarlett next-gen consoles.

New Viking Assassin's Creed may be next-gen console launch game

Reports say Assassin's Creed will go to the brutal age of seafaring Vikings in 2020, fitting in line with Ubisoft's two-year release schedule for the series. Now Ubisoft hints this is true, and the game will be fully optimized for next-generation console hardware.

The move is framed by a recent business change at Ubisoft. The company just delayed three big games (Watch Dogs Legion, Rainbow Six: Quarantine, and Gods and Monsters) following disappointing earnings from The Division 2 and Ghost Recon Breakpoint. All three games have moved to the FY2021 timeline (April 1, 2020 - March 31, 2021) and will tap next-gen console power.

Diablo II icon changes don't indicate remaster

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 25, 2019 9:26 AM CDT

Changes to Diablo II's and Lord of Destruction's icons on Battle.net aren't actually new.

Diablo II icon changes don't indicate remaster

Overwatch streamer Metro is back with new Blizzard info, this time showing a screen capture of altered Diablo II and Diablo II: Lord of Destruction icons. But these icons changed a while back. The hope was this icon swap indicated a Diablo II remaster for Blizzcon 2019, possibly alongside Diablo IV. As an owner of both games on Battle.net, I was able to confirm the icons are indeed the same on the storefront page and on the download section. But they've been that way for a long time.

This particular report is a false alarm. I actually re-installed both games on my PC just to see if the launcher icons had changed, and lo and behold, they're still the same as back in the old days. The new generic stylized DII logo isn't found.

Shroud packs up and leaves Twitch to join Ninja over at Mixer

Jak Connor | Gaming | Oct 25, 2019 6:07 AM CDT

Mixer has now nabbed two of the biggest streamers in the world, Shroud and Ninja. A new announcement from Shroud has said "Same Shroud. New Home".

Shroud packs up and leaves Twitch to join Ninja over at Mixer

The announcement comes from Michael "Shroud" Grzesiek's personal Twitter account, which featurs a short video that pokes some fun at how serious some of these streamer moves have been taken as of late. Instead of another serious transition trailer, Shroud decided to lighten the move with a cat and being interrupted half-way through the epic trailer.

Shroud has already picked up 40,000 followers on Mixer, and while that might seem like an extremely small amount compared to his Twitch following, that number is sure to grow as he continues to stream. Shroud will now also be joining Ninja on Mixer who also recently made the transition, more on that here.

New Witcher Netflix images show: monster, Geralt at bar, Roach & more

Jak Connor | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Oct 25, 2019 5:36 AM CDT

Some new images for the upcoming Witcher TV show have been released, showcasing some quite familiar aspects of what we know and love about Geralt.

New Witcher Netflix images show: monster, Geralt at bar, Roach & more

Above we have the first screenshot and as you can see from the size of the claws and hand, its quite large. We don't necessarily know what the monster is, but from the image it seems somewhat friendly? If that's even possible in the Witcher world. The rest of the images are located in the entirety of this article.

Next we have Geralt and his trusty companion Roach (his horse). From the image it could be speculated that Geralt and Roach are tracking something, as Geralt looks perplexed or in deep train of thought, while Roach's head is pointed towards the ground.

Google releases Chrome 78: password check, dark mode & much more added

Jak Connor | Software & Apps | Oct 25, 2019 4:17 AM CDT

The latest version of Google Chrome is now live for all platforms and with the new version comes a plethora of brand new features.

Google releases Chrome 78: password check, dark mode & much more added

The new features are as follows; new customization for the New Tab page, forced dark mode, Password Checkup, Tab Hover Cards, Click-To-Call and more. Firstly, the New Tab page originally just allowed users to customize the background, now Google gives users a choice between a large selection of images or themes, while also giving the option of shortcut customization.

Forced Dark Mode is exactly what it sounds like. Google Chrome will now convert all websites on the web to a dark theme, whether or not they support it in their back-end. Instead of adding new source code to every individual website, Google has used color inversion theory to change the light websites to a dark theme. Tab Hover Cards gives users more accessible navigation through their chosen cards, while 'Click-to-Call' adds an option to send a phone number found on the web to the users Android phone.

Analyst says, Cyberpunk 2077 will sell 20 million copies in just 1yr

Jak Connor | Gaming | Oct 25, 2019 3:40 AM CDT

CD Projekt RED's highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 is no doubt going to move some units once it releases in April next year, but how many exactly?

Analyst says, Cyberpunk 2077 will sell 20 million copies in just 1yr

According to Bloomberg analyst, Matthew Kanterman, Cyberpunk 2077 is predicted to exceed 20 million copies within its first year of release. To give a bit of context on how big of a feat this is, CD Projekt RED's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt only managed to exceed 20 million copies four years into its release and that title also picked up a Game of The Year Award.

Its unclear if Cyberpunk 2077 will be able to beat that record, but judging from the hype that has been circling the game for quite some time now, I wouldn't be surprised if it crossed the 20 million mark by the one year mark. If you have missed out on some Cyberpunk 2077 news and would like to catch up, recently it was discovered that the could would feature acid rain. There was also a really cool 4K screenshot released, more on that here.

BBC sticks middle-finger up at censorship by creating Dark Web site

Jak Connor | Internet & Websites | Oct 25, 2019 3:09 AM CDT

Now days, censorship is becoming more than abundant on the internet and while most websites or content creators are bending the knee to the rule makers, BBC has decided to take a different stance.

BBC sticks middle-finger up at censorship by creating Dark Web site

In an effort to stand-up against the current and coming censorship laws, the BBC has announced that they have created a dark web mirror-site that can only be accessed by the Tor browser. According to the recent BBC post, users who decide to use this dark web variant will not have to worry about "government surveillance and censorship".

This is especially true for countries that have blocked BBC, "China, Iran and Vietnam are among those who have tried to block access to the BBC News website". BBC also details that for users to visit their website they must first download the Tor browser, and then place the following link their search engine. "bbcnewsv2vjtpsuy.onion". It should be noted that this link won't work in common web browsers. If you are interested in a full explanation of what Tor is, check out BBC's full post here.

Rocket League's base DLC packs are now included in the game for free

Jak Connor | Gaming | Oct 25, 2019 2:29 AM CDT

Psyonix has taken to their official Rocket League blog to announce that all Rocket League players on all platforms will soon be getting some free DLC's.

Rocket League's base DLC packs are now included in the game for free

The blog post says Psyonix will soon be discontinuing the following DLC's; Supersonic Fury, Revenge of the Battle-Cars, and Chaos Run. Since these DLC packs are soon not going to be available for purchase, Rocket League players will instead be gifted with all of their contents completely free of charge.

This means that players will soon have access to the vehicles, decals, paint finishes and wheels of Dominus, Takumi, Scarab, Zippy, Ripper, and Grog. It was also noted in the blog post that players that have purchased any of those DLC's will be eligible for a re-fund through the platform they are playing on. Unfortunately, Psyonix didn't mention a solid release date for this content, but instead they said that they will follow-up with an announcement before the end of the year.

Tesla made $143M profit in Q3 2019, even with record car deliveries

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Oct 25, 2019 1:47 AM CDT

Tesla has just reported its Q3 2019 earnings, surprising Wall Street and seeing TSLA shares increasing in after-marketing trading.

Tesla made $143M profit in Q3 2019, even with record car deliveries

The reason? Tesla reported $143 million in net income, or 80c a share -- which when compared to the same quarter of 2018, saw the Elon Musk-led company reporting $311 million, or $1.82 per share. However, when adjusted for one-time items Tesla earned $342 million, at $1.91 a share.

Tesla reported overall revenues of $6.3 billion, lower than analysts' expectations of $6.42 billion, and 7.5% lower than Q3 2018. Tesla added that the company was "highly confident" deliveries will easily pass 360,000 this year.

Tech whistleblower: YouTubers paid by NVIDIA for product placement

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Oct 25, 2019 12:26 AM CDT

TechPowerUp caused quite the stir in the last few hours, with the site reporting from a Reddit "whistleblower" that posted about NVIDIA marketing having control over YouTubers. It ended, as you'd expect... disastrously.

Tech whistleblower: YouTubers paid by NVIDIA for product placement

First up, check out this full text of the post that TPU reported on... but then the site used an image from Steven "Tech Jesus" Burke from Gamers Nexus. This image was quickly removed once the drama began. There was absolutely no need to use his image, at all, and so Burke rightfully so -- blasted TPU on Twitter in an exchange you can read here:

The whistleblower said that he/she is scared NVIDIA will "punish" them if they talked about this under their YouTube channel. This means that whoever the anonymous "whistleblower" is, it's a YouTuber who "makes video reviews on computer hardware". From the outset, the post notes that they are "pretty big" but "not LTT big, but still pretty big" and that they work with all of the major hardware companies.

World's smallest camera is the size of a grain of sand

OmniVision OV6948 measures in super-small at just 0.575 x 0.575 x 0.232mm and is good for 40,000-pixel color images using an RGB Bayer back-side-illuminating chip. This new camera is ridiculosuly small, but it's for specific use cases in surgery.

With the OmniVision OV6948 surgeions can have a camera so small it will fit into the smallest veins inside of the human body. This provides surgeons and doctors that have the OmniVision OV6948 with next-gen camera access for future surgeries.

Elon Musk thinks Tesla energy could be 'bigger' than Tesla EV business

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Oct 24, 2019 11:14 PM CDT

Elon Musk thinks that Tesla's energy business could one day be the same size as, or if not bigger than the electric car business Tesla is known for (at least for now).

Elon Musk thinks Tesla energy could be 'bigger' than Tesla EV business

During a recent earnings call by Tesla Motors, CEO Elon Musk said in relation to Tesla's energy business compared to the electric vehicle business: "It could be bigger, but it will certainly be of a similar magnitude".

Tesla keeps the numbers of its energy business close to its chest, but out of the $6.3 billion that Tesla made in Q3 2019 -- $5.35 billion came from its automotive revenues. This includes the sales of the Tesla Model S, Model X, and Model X electric vehicles.

HP teams with Virtuix on $100,000 esports tournament in VR

Anthony Garreffa | Extended Reality (XR) | Oct 24, 2019 10:48 PM CDT

OK -- if there was ever a time to sit back and say "now this is awesome", that time is now. Virtuix and HP have just teamed up to throw a huge $100,000 esports tournament.

HP teams with Virtuix on $100,000 esports tournament in VR

The $100K tournament will take place in Virtuix Oni's Arena virtual reality attractions, and while $100K pales in comparisons to the millions and even 10s of millions on offer for other esports, this is specifically in VR -- and more specifically, on freaking VR treadmills. It'll be sweaty, with gamers (really) earning their money.

Virtuix and HP have teamed together for the 2020 Omni Arena esports series, which now has a $100,000 prize pool. The last event had $50,000 -- so we have a doubling in prize pool thanks to the new partnership with HP -- as well as the winning teams taking home an HP Reverb Virtual Reality Headset.

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Oct 24, 2019 9:32 PM CDT

Epic Games changed game marketing forever with its huge Fortnite stunt to usher in Chapter 2, with a black hole sucking the entire game out of existence, and then Epic removing the game from the internet.

How did it go? Well, it was one of the largest single online gaming events ever. Epic saw over 7 million concurrent viewers across Twitch, Twitter, and YouTube. It was one of the most-viewed YouTube gaming events ever, too.

Moving over to Twitch, Epic noticed 1.7 million people viewing the event through either the official Fortnite stream Epic hosts, or streams from popular Twitch streamers. Epic added: "the platform's peak concurrent record on a single game category".
