Intel foldable smartphone patent: folds open into a huge tablet PC

| Jan 30, 2020 1:46 AM CST

Intel teased a prototype foldable PC at CES 2020 earlier this year, and while the 'Horseshoe Bend' prototype looked cool -- it's still a laptop, and not a foldable phone like Samsung and its Galaxy Fold -- or the interesting new Samsung Galaxy Z.

Intel foldable smartphone patent: folds open into a huge tablet PC

But now our friends at LetsGoDigital, which have been on a roll with these gorgeous renders of products, are back again with Intel's foldable smarpthone patent. This isn't the first time a foldable Intel smartphone has been teased, but this new patent has a wicked wraparound display.

The display here on the new Intel patent and 3D renders from LetsGoDigital is really thin, allowing Intel to make the smartphone much thinner and allow it to fold in the way it does in this patent. The entire phone is a huge display, where there is a big button at the bottom which when pressed, will see the phone unfold.

iPhone Cyberphone inspired by Tesla Cybertruck and it looks awesome

| Jan 29, 2020 10:05 PM CST

Tesla has made big enough waves with its electric Cybertruck that Russian custom smartphone maker Caviar has just unveiled their latest, and possibly most gorgeous creation yet -- the iPhone Cyberphone. I also think this may be the best 'mod or attachment' for the Tesla Cybertruck ever.

iPhone Cyberphone inspired by Tesla Cybertruck and it looks awesome

Caviar has modified Apple's new iPhone 11 Pro to the design and style of Tesla's new Cybertruck, with a gorgeous and protected titanium body and a bunch of beautiful metal plates -- just like Tesla's Cybertruck. The back cover, sides and the screen are all hidden under metal plates which protect the phone, and it looks great.

But, those metal plates aren't just there for looks -- Caviar has made great use of the metal plates on its new custom iPhone Cyberphone that can fold out and into a holder. It's actually really nifty, and something that I can see the 99 people (as Caviar is only making 99 of these limited edition phones) using this as a great built-in feature.

Apple rumored to release 'AirTags' trackers this year

| Jan 29, 2020 9:43 PM CST

It seems like Apple is wanting to let the apple fall a little farther from the tree, with its purported new AirTags being teased by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Apple rumored to release 'AirTags' trackers this year

Kuo's latest research note suggests a bunch of new Apple products to be announced this year, with one of them being Ultra Wideband-enabled AirTags. Apple's new AirTags would be very much like a Tile tracker tag, with Apple's new AirTags to support Ultra Wideband, something that will enable much more accuracy than Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi.

In her note, Kuo said: "We forecast that Apple's major new hardware products in 1H20 include the 4.7-inch LCD iPhone, iPad Pro, MacBook Pro/Air, smaller wireless charging mat, UWB tag, and a high-end Bluetooth headphone".

Apple denies EU's request to move into unified mobile chargers

| Jan 27, 2020 3:24 AM CST

The European Union is pushing for smartphone manufacturers to voluntarily agree to one uniform smartphone charger. Apple doesn't think it needs to be involved and has denied their request.

Apple denies EU's request to move into unified mobile chargers

Samsung, Nokia, Huawei, LG and Apple all signed an agreement to unify mobile device chargers and since this voluntary agreement hasn't been fullied by some companies the EU are moving towards pushing it into law. The goal is to make it law that smartphone manufacturers will be required to use a standard charger when importing their products into the EU.

Companies such as Nokia, Samsung and LG don't really have a problem with this considering their chargers for their smartphones use a USB connection. Apple on the other hand is in a bit of a tight spot as they have their own proprietary Lightning cable for charging and data transfer. Apple's rebuttal against the EU is based on a study by Copenhagen Economics which found that if a common charger was created an enforced upon manufacturers that it would cost 1.5 billion euros.

Samsung Galaxy S20 price leaks: $999 through to $1349 for S20 Ultra

| Jan 26, 2020 11:25 PM CST

In less than two weeks we'll know all about the Samsung Galaxy S20 family of smartphones, like we haven't already from all the leaks -- but one thing we don't know about yet is price.

Samsung Galaxy S20 price leaks: $999 through to $1349 for S20 Ultra

According to a new leak, we should be expecting some seriously expensive smartphones from Samsung with the new Galaxy S20 family starting at $899. Samsung's new Galaxy S20 4G will reportedly cost $899, while the S20 5G is $999. Moving up from there we have the Galaxy S20+ 5G at $1099 while the flagship Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G will reportedly cost $1349.

Samsung might even have 4G versions of the Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra for all we know, which would reduce the price from the $1099 and $1349 to maybe $999 and $1249 -- but that's something we'll have to wait until February 11 at their Unpacked 2020 to find out. Until then, check out my detailed coverage on Samsung's new Galaxy S20 range of smartphones here.

Our first 'official' photo of Samsung's new Galaxy S20, Galaxy Buds+

| Jan 26, 2020 10:45 PM CST

I think the hype train for Samsung's new Galaxy S20 has been going for months now, but it feels like it is speeding up and faster than ever before as the days pass. Now, we have our first 'official' photo of the new Galaxy S20 and the new Galaxy Buds+ that you'll get for free if you pre-order the phone.

Our first 'official' photo of Samsung's new Galaxy S20, Galaxy Buds+

Notorious leaker Evan 'evleaks' Blass has leaked out a bunch of official images for the Galaxy S20 family of smartphones, along with a promotional shot that sees Samsung giving a free set of the Galaxy Buds+ if you pre-order the Galaxy S20+ or Galaxy S20 Ultra smartphones.

There's nothing new with the shots other than confirming what we have already seen from the slew of leaks on the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra. But we do have some official goodies confirming the insane 108-megapixel camera on the Galaxy S20 Ultra and its 100x "Space Zoom" feature, and the higher-end Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, up to 16GB of RAM (!!!) and 120Hz displays.

Motorola: 'bumps and lumps are normal' on foldable Razr smartphone

| Jan 26, 2020 9:23 PM CST

Motorola is edging closer to the release of its foldable Razr smartphone, with the company pushing out a new support video dubbed 'Caring for Razr', check it out:

Motorola: 'bumps and lumps are normal' on foldable Razr smartphone

In the video, Motorola says that Razr smartphone owners will have to get used to bumps and lumps as the company says "bumps and lumps are normal" on the plastic screen. Motorola adds that you should not be using screen protectors or sharp objects on the screen, so like Samsung's foldable Galaxy Fold -- do not use your nails on the screen.

Motorola also warns future Razr foldable smartphone users to fold up their Razr phone before they put it in their pockets, the only warning where I'm left scratching my head -- would someone really put an unfolded Razr in their pocket? Probably. As for now, Motorola will begin shipping pre-orders of the Razr in early February, with the phone costing $1500.

This is our first look at Samsung's new Galaxy Note 20 smartphone

| Jan 26, 2020 8:27 PM CST

Samsung is ramping up to the launch of the Galaxy S20 range of smartphones, with the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy S20 Ultra all to be unveiled on February 11 at the Unpacked 2020 event. Samsung's flagship Galaxy S20 Ultra will have a huge 108-megapixel camera with a 100x 'Space Zoom' feature.

This is our first look at Samsung's new Galaxy Note 20 smartphone

But now it's time for some leaks on the larger Galaxy Note 20 smartphone, which should be unveiled later this year -- and leaker @IceUniverse on Twitter has tweeted out the purported design of the body of the upcoming Galaxy Note 20. We should expect the Galaxy Note 20 to be a larger version of the Galaxy S20 in terms of design, retaining its rectangular section of next-gen cameras.

The button placement, USB-C charging port and S-Pen stylus haven't moved from the current-gen Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ smartphones, but inside we should expect all-new tech. Samsung will use Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 865 processor as well as their own in-house Exynos 990 chip -- both with 5G connectivity. We should expect Samsung to also use a glorious 120Hz panel inside of the Galaxy Note 20 just like the upcoming Galaxy S20 family of smartphones.

Indian smartphone market now larger than the US, thanks to China

| Jan 26, 2020 4:48 AM CST

If you thought the US smartphone market was the largest in the world, well you were wrong -- twice. First, China is the largest smartphone market in the world and now India has dethroned the US.

According to a new report from Counterpoint Research, India overtook the US and is now the second-largest smartphone market in the world with 158 million smartphones shipping into India in 2019 alone. The reason for this gigantic surge and overtaking of the US market is thanks to Chinese smartphone manufacturers Xiaomi, Vivo, Realme and Oppo.

In fact, 72% of smartphones shipped to India were Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Xiaomi, Vivo, Realme and Oppo. But what about Apple and Samsung? Samsung still holds 21% of the Indian smartphone market, while Xiaomi commands 28% winning 5% of the smartphone market in 2019 from Samsung. Realme is the real surprise here, going from 3% to 10% which is a 255% increase year-over-year.

Motorola's foldable Razr pre-orders ship in early February for $1500

| Jan 25, 2020 11:40 PM CST

This year will be known as the year of foldable smartphones really taking off, with Samsung already dominating the foldable smarpthone market with its Galaxy Fold and soon to be Galaxy Z -- which folds out like a Z, oh and the Galaxy Z Flip.

Motorola's foldable Razr pre-orders ship in early February for $1500

But don't forget that Motorola will be shipping its cheaper Razr, a new foldable that will see pre-orders from Verizon and Walmart shipping this month. Motorola's new foldable Razr smartphone is 'just' $1500, packing Qualcomm's mid-range Snapdragon 710, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of RAM compared to the Snapdragon 855 inside of the Galaxy Fold.

Motorola's foldable Razr smartphone packs a foldable 6.2-inch pOLED as its main display, while there's also a 2.7-inch OLED external display.

Samsung Galaxy S20: 120Hz display, but 60Hz by default

| Jan 25, 2020 1:08 AM CST

The leaks, rumors and even confirmed news on Samsung's new Galaxy S20 family of smartphones continues with news of the 120Hz display being set at 60Hz by default. We will know all about Samsung's new phones at its Unpacked 2020 event on February 11.

Samsung Galaxy S20: 120Hz display, but 60Hz by default

According to Max Weinbach from XDA Developers, Samsung will be shipping the new Galaxy S20 smartphones with their displays set to 60Hz. If you want that liquid smooth 120Hz goodness, you'll have to set it manually. ASUS ships its gaming smartphone in the ROG Phone 2 at 60Hz and that is also 120Hz-capable, while the Google Pixel 4/Pixel 4 XL and OnePlus smartphones ship with 90Hz displays out of the box.

Samsung will be doing this to conserve battery life out of the box, where if they shipped them to consumers at 120Hz then you'll have millions of people wondering why their phones are chewing through battery quicker than normal on a brand new smartphone. I'm hoping Samsung provides some sort of warning on the phone like "This phone is capable of 120Hz, go here to enable it".

Galaxy Fold 2 specs: 108MP camera, next-gen Snapdragon 865 and 5G tech

| Jan 24, 2020 8:28 PM CST

Samsung has one of the most feature-packed smartphones in the market with its Galaxy Fold, but it looks like the Galaxy Fold successor will be better in every single way. We could see the Galaxy Fold 2 teased at Samsung's upcoming Unpacked 2020 event on February 11.

Galaxy Fold 2 specs: 108MP camera, next-gen Snapdragon 865 and 5G tech

Max Weinbach from XDA Developers has tweeted that he has heard from his sources that Samsung will be launching a successor to the Galaxy Fold in Q2 2020, and that it will pack an insane 8-inch display, 108-megapixel camera, Ultra Thin glass, an S-Pen, Qualcomm's kick-ass new Snapdragon 865 and with that, 5G connectivity.

Samsung's new Galaxy S20 Ultra smartphone will be using the same 108-megapixel camera, something that will have 100x 'Space Zoom' support. We should expect the same rear-facing snapper in the Galaxy Fold, but the upgrade to the new Snapdragon 865 is going to deliver blistering speed as well as ultra-fast 5G connectivity.

Samsung Galaxy Z: new foldable phone folds into 'Z' shape

| Jan 24, 2020 7:31 PM CST

Samsung will be unveiling its new Galaxy S20 family of smartphones at its Unpacked 2020 event on February 11, where we'll be introduced to the new Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra smartphones. But there will be a few surprises, too.

Samsung Galaxy Z: new foldable phone folds into 'Z' shape

One of those surprises is the not-so-surprising (because of all the leaks) in the Galaxy Z Flip smartphone, but Samsung is reportedly set to unveil a new Galaxy Z smartphone that is shaping up beautifully. Thanks to some new leaked images, we're getting our best look at the super-exciting Galaxy Z smartphone that folds up into a Z shape, and it looks awesome.

But thanks to our good friends at LetsGoDigital, we have some gorgeous renders that make me want Samsung to release the Galaxy Z just like this. It looks like a much more refined foldable smartphone, and it would be a huge step away (but still very close to) the Galaxy Fold which I personally own and absolutely adore.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra press render confirm '100x Space Zoom' camera

| Jan 23, 2020 11:28 PM CST

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S20 family of smartphones are not really a mystery with all the leaks, but now we have another confirmation of its 100x camera -- something Samsung will call 'Space Zoom'.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra press render confirm '100x Space Zoom' camera

Now there's some official press renders of Samsung's flagship Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G, which confirms the 100x camera that Samsung will call its 'Space Zoom' camera. We don't know much about how it works, but we know that the flagship Galaxy S20 Ultra will pack a 108-megapixel camera with '100x Space Zoom'.

The rear-facing camera rig on the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is hectic, and takes up a gigantic chunk of the top half of the phone. Samsung will have 10x optical zoom and then the mysterious 100x digital zoom AKA 'Space Zoom'. We will know more about Samsung's new Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy S20 Ultra smartphones at Unpacked 2020 on February 11.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip uses 'Ultra-Thin Glass' for foldable goodness

| Jan 23, 2020 10:36 PM CST

Samsung will be unveiling its new flagship Galaxy S20 family of smartphones at its Unpacked 2020 event on February 11, where we will also be introduced to the new Galaxy Z Flip foldable smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip uses 'Ultra-Thin Glass' for foldable goodness

The new Galaxy Z Flip smartphone has received a few more details in the last day or so, with a new report suggesting it will have "Ultra-Thin Glass" with a Dynamic AMOLED display underneath. There will still be a crease in the display, just like Samsung's flagship Galaxy Fold, but it will have a much, much smaller footprint.

Samsung will reportedly use a much smaller display on the front of the Galaxy Z Flip, with the smaller display used to show users battery information, and more. The smaller display on the front of the Galaxy Z Flip would also be used as a viewfinder for the rear-facing cameras for those ever-important selfies, as well as notifications.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra camera: 10x optical zoom, 100x digital zoom

| Jan 19, 2020 11:41 PM CST

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S20 family of smartphones are right around the corner, with detailed specs leaking out over the last few days that paint an amazing picture of what the flagship Galaxy S20 Ultra will end up as. The camera system itself will be a stand out feature, something we're learning more and more about as the days go by:

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra camera: 10x optical zoom, 100x digital zoom

But now a new photo of the rear-facing camera setup has been spotted, with the new Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G camera rig shown in dual shade (grey matte + black). The '100X' sticker on the back will reportedly make it into consumer handsets and will be printed alongside the Periscope camera.

I don't like the idea of a big '100X' branding on the back of the Galaxy S20 Ultra, but then again this is going to be a huge monster upgrade over the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S20+, so Samsung most likely wants to bring attention to the fact you're rolling around using a Galaxy S20 Ultra smartphone.

Huawei: 5G phones at under $150 are coming in Q4 2020

| Jan 19, 2020 10:29 PM CST

5G smartphones might feel like they're few and far between right now, but there are many more of them on the way -- and Chinese giant Huawei is promising 5G-enabled smartphones for below $150 by the end of 2020.

Huawei: 5G phones at under $150 are coming in Q4 2020

Huawei sees a big market for 5G smartphones going forward, so offering budget-friendly super-fast 5G-enabled smartphones in the Chinese market is going to be a big deal. Sure, the Western market might be able to afford $1000+ smartphones but the Chinese market is a very different one, a market where sub $150 is very important.

I would expect a very budget-specced handset for under $150 with 5G connectivity, with Huawei to most likely use its in-house Harmony OS on these new sub-$150 5G-enabled smartphones. Harmony does not have anywhere near the feature set of Google's own Android, but for entry-level and mid-range smartphones it should be fine.

Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra full specs leaked

| Jan 18, 2020 8:31 PM CST

A massive leak of detailed specs on Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S20 family of smartphones, where we have the full specs on the upcoming Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and the flagship Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra full specs leaked

We know that Samsung's new trio of smartphones will pack what should be one of, if not the most gorgeous display on the market with a 120Hz refresh rate. Inside, they'll pack Samsung's Exynos 990 chipset on the 7nm node, with a minimum of 128GB of storage which will be expandable through a microSD card slot.

International versions of the Galaxy S20 range of smartphones will use Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 865, while Android 10 with One UI 2.0 will take care of the OS and UI side of things. The phones will rock varying sizes of Samsung's new Infinity-O Dynamic AMOLED display at a gorgeously smooth 120Hz refresh rate.

Android 11 caught running on Pixel 4 on Geekbench

| Jan 18, 2020 7:47 PM CST

Android 11 has been spotted running on a Pixel 4 smartphone, with Google's new mobile operating system caught in a Geekbench result.

Android 11 caught running on Pixel 4 on Geekbench

We don't know exactly what to expect with Android 11 right now, but we do know that Android 11 will be capable of creating video files that are bigger than 4GB. This might not be useful for many people, but with more and more smartphones packing more insane cameras -- shooting 4K 60FPS, and even Samsung's new Galaxy S20+ and S20 Ultra shooting 8K 30FPS, it'll be very useful.

Not only that, but Android 11 will also let users store IDs on their smartphones, paving the way for all-digital drivers licenses, and more. Google will be including a nifty 'low power' mode that will power the smartphone for enough time to show your ID.

Fortnite: 120FPS now on iPad Pro, something consoles can't do yet

| Jan 16, 2020 8:00 PM CST

The world of high refresh rate gaming is opening up for Fortnite gamers on-the-go, with 2018 iPad Pro owners able to hit 120FPS through a new update.

Fortnite: 120FPS now on iPad Pro, something consoles can't do yet

Epic Games' new update for Fortnite enables 120FPS goodness in Fortnite with 2018 iPad Pro models, as they pack the fluid ProMotion display. The new update also adds support for clickable thumbstick buttons (L3/R3) on certain iOS controllers.

Fortnite will see its graphics settings drop to Medium when 120FPS is enabled, which is done through the video settings in the game. This is a given considering Fortnite is running on an SoC, and driving 120FPS is pretty crazy. So crazy that even the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game run Fortnite at 60FPS... meaning that the iPad Pro is better than current-gen consoles (at least the base model units, that is).
