MSI's next-gen gaming laptops feature 120Hz display

Anthony Garreffa | Laptops | Aug 11, 2016 5:43 AM CDT

MSI have been teasing their next-gen gaming notebooks, which will be ready for high-end gaming as well as everything VR. Inside, it can be configured with up to Intel's new Core i7 6820HK processor, and we should feature NVIDIA's next-gen GeForce GTX 10 series GPU.

MSI's upcoming GT72VR Dominator gaming laptop stood out for me, as it will reportedly feature a 120Hz display, which MSI says is "the fastest mobile display". This excites me beyond belief, as it'll be the first gaming laptop with a super-fast 120Hz refresh rate on a gaming notebook.

There will also be a 4K IPS panel offering, with MSI promising 100% Adobe RGB. Inside, MSI will include upgraded audio technologies with sound from Dynaudio, and the GT83VR and GT73VR Titan gaming laptops featuring Nahimic 2 and Audio Boost 2 technologies.

Reboot 'Ghostbusters' film headed for a $70m loss

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Aug 11, 2016 1:03 AM CDT

After all the pre-release posturing about sexism and equality, bad trailers and plain old screwing with a classic, the rebooted 'Ghostbusters' film plain sucked. It seemed audiences agreed too, and that's put in jeopardy the whole cinematic universe that Sony Pictures is developing, with projections the film is headed for at least a $70 million loss for the studio.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is bracing for a big write down for the film, which has slumped with a $180 million dollar gross across the world, barely more than its $144 million budget. Worse, the film needed to gross $300 million to just break even once marketing costs were taken into account. But Sony have shot back saying all is not as bad as it's being made out to be, with a rep saying "With multiple revenue streams, including consumer products, gaming, location-based entertainment, continued international rollout, and huge third-party promotional partnerships that mitigated costs, the bottom line, even before co-financing, is not remotely close to that number".

Still, it's become crystal clear that movie audiences haven't embraced the rebooted series in the way that they should have, if it was handled with a lot more care, alongside a competent director, a stronger script and a different cast). A truly missed opportunity.

Chrome will block all Flash content starting next month

Sean Ridgeley | Internet & Websites | Aug 10, 2016 9:27 PM CDT

Flash's swift decline is imminent, as Google is preparing to block all content that uses the software in its Chrome browser. Larger Flash content has been blocked in the popular browser for awhile now, Google is extending its coverage to the smaller stuff too. Tacking platforms and page analytics are among that, and can slow down browsing and drain battery just the same.

It's taken awhile to provide coverage for small Flash elements because until recently, there was no way to detect them.

Google isn't taking a hard stance on Flash quite yet though: if you want to enable Flash objects on a given page (like Twitch and Facebook, which require it), you'll still be able to. Eventually, such an option won't exist.

Second gen Panasonic UltraHD Blu-ray player on the way

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Aug 10, 2016 8:32 PM CDT

While Panasonic is only one of three companies to have launched hardware to support the 4K UltraHD Blu-ray format thus far, that hasn't stopped the Japanese multinational from announcing a cheaper, second generation player to combat the entry-level X-Box One S which is currently the cheapest player on the market.

According to What Hi-Fi, Panasonic's DMP-UB90 will join the first model DMP-UB900 with nearly identical specifications for nearly half the price when it hits Japan later this month for 70,000 yen (around $700 USD). The new player only drops the analogue audio outputs and THX certification from its older sibling - which is no real loss.

Meanwhile, Sony are expected to (finally) announce their first UltraHD Blu-ray in the form of the PlayStation Neo (whatever it ends up being called) at next month's PlayStation meeting in New York.

Galaxy Note 7 display capable of over 1000 nits

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Aug 10, 2016 8:26 PM CDT

Samsung is killing it with the pre-release marketing of its upcoming Galaxy Note 7 smartphone, and it's not 'just because' - the Galaxy Note 7 looks like a beast, and has the specs and display to match.

According to DisplayMate, the display on the Galaxy Note 7 is a new level of awesome, capable of over 1000 nits of brightness. The company says the Galaxy Note 7 display hits its maximum brightness if it's left in automatic mode, but when it's outside, the brightness is boosted to new levels in order for you to see the display outside.

Samsung's Galaxy S7 hits a peak brightness of 855 nits, which was the best at the time. The Galaxy Note 7 on the other hand, reaches 1048 nits in the same conditions. The contrast ratio is also higher in those situations, too. Disabling the auto brightness setting on the Galaxy Note 7 has the display pushing 639 nits compared to 440 nits on the Galaxy S7.

Google wants to make your bathroom more intelligent

Sean Ridgeley | Science, Space, & Robotics | Aug 10, 2016 7:36 PM CDT

Google has applied for a patent on bathroom devices that monitor your health. Among them: a pressure and electrical-sensing mat, a color-sensing bathroom mirror, an ultrasonic bathtub, a pressure-sensing toilet seat, and a radar-field device.

Some monitor your body by sending out sound waves, electromagnetic waves, electrical signals, and various forms of radiation, among other techniques, the data from which could be sent to health professionals. The devices can monitor your blood pressure and various parts of your body to determine specific health issues, like an impaired knee or overworked heart.

This isn't Google's first foray into the medical technology field: previously it explored Google Lens, a device that monitored sugar levels via an electronic eye lens.

JDI's new 5.5-inch mobile LCD with barely-there bezels

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Aug 10, 2016 6:30 PM CDT

We all hate the bezels on our smartphones, with some worse than others, and now JDI has unveiled something that could really change things on future smartphones.

JDI has introduced a new 5.5-inch 1080p LCD that has super-slim, barely-there bezels, on all four edges. So not just as the edges like some smartphones, but all four edges of JDI's new LCD have incredibly thin bezels which the company says are made from a combination of high-density wiring and "new processing and module assembly technologies".

JDI is hoping to mass produce the screens in March 2017, so we should expect some smartphone manufacturers to take notice when this happens. While this might sound great, remember that you still need to fix a camera, microphone and a few other trinkets around the LCD display, no matter what.

Abrams.

Disney to launch sports streaming network, invests $1bn

Sean Ridgeley | Internet & Websites | Aug 10, 2016 5:29 PM CDT

Disney is buying one-third of revered streaming company BAM Tech -- which powers NHL.tv and MLB.tv -- at a cost of $1 billion.

The company's long-term plan with this move is to launch an ESPN-branded subscription-based streaming network (emphasis on branded, because it won't include current ESPN programming, but rather, separate, ESPN-type channels).

The network makes the most of any for Disney and it's already formed ESPN deals with cable and satellite companies, so understandably, it doesn't want to mess up a good thing. However, should the whole cordcutting thing really take off, Disney can easily shift its content.

Phison's new E8 flash controller offers up to 1.6GB/sec

Anthony Garreffa | Storage | Aug 10, 2016 4:31 PM CDT

Flash Memory Summit 2016 - Phison has debuted its new consumer, embedded and enterprise flash controller and NAND solutions at the Flash Memory Summit 2016. This includes the new PS5008-E8/E8T PCIe Gen 3x2 NVMe controller, 3D NAND solutions for both PCIe and SATA, design-in solutions, and plenty more.

The consumer-focused Phison PS5008-E8/E8T is the company's first PCIe Gen 3x2 NVMe controller, which offers 3x the speed that SATA offers, but at the same cost. The Phison E8 is capable of 1.6GB/sec reads and 1.3GB/sec writes, while it offers sequential read/write speeds of 240K and 220K IOPS, respectively. What makes this SSD especially appealing is that it delivers 3x the performance of SATA SSDs for the same cost.

Phison's new E8 controller features SmartECCTM, End to End Data Path Protection and Host Memory Buffer support which when packaged together, offers great data security and reliability. Phison's new E8 is in its engineering stage right now, with Phison saying it will be available by the end of 2016.

Quantum Break is coming to Steam

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 10, 2016 3:21 PM CDT

When Xbox division head Phil Spencer said "we will ship games on Steam again" I never thought major AAA exclusives would be included. As it turns out, Quantum Break will be making the jump from the Windows Store to the other side of the fence on Steam on September 14.

Quantum Break is coming to Steam

This is a pretty strange way to do business. Microsoft is dead-set on building up the Windows Store platform, and it won't do that without games. Quantum Break was notorious for breaking its Xbox One exclusivity to jump to Windows 10 PCs. This caused a lot of flak from Xbox One gamers, who saw their library being misappropriated at the last minute. Now Redmond has done the same thing, only this time they're selling a major first-party title on a competitor's storefront.

This begs everyone to question how many more "Windows 10 exclusive" games will follow suit. Are all the "exclusive" games shown at E3 2016 just timed exclusive on the Windows Store? Can we expect them to jump over to Steam after five months too?

What is No Man's Sky? A primer for curious gamers

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 10, 2016 11:16 AM CDT

No Man's Sky isn't the end-all space exploration sim, and it's not Minecraft in space. So what is it exactly? After playing for two days now, we aim to answer that question, and tell you exactly what you should and shouldn't expect from Hello Games' infinitesmal exploration simulator.

What is No Man's Sky? A primer for curious gamers

Let's get one thing out of the way first: No Man's Sky is a lonely game. It's not a multiplayer game, and when you meet someone in the vast expanse of the universe, you won't even know it: other players are invisible to you. But that's okay, because it's not the strong point of the game. The point of the game is to see what's out there. You're driven by one of man's strongest motivators: curiosity. You never know what you're going to find out there, and that's really the magic of the game.

You don't place as a space marine in No Man's Sky. You're an explorer who starts off with the basics, and you build up your tools--Exosuit, Starship and Multi-tool--with random upgrades. Sure you'll get more powerful, but you'll never really be Rambo. It's not that type of game: it's not about killing, or conquering. It's about serene exploration and discovery, an intimate look at the exotic far-reaching depths of space.

Samsung's next-gen mobile CPU could hit 4GHz on 10nm

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Aug 10, 2016 10:25 AM CDT

Samsung has been pumping out some incredibly mobile processors with its Exynos range of processors, but it looks like the company is about to ramp things up considerably with its Exynos 8895 processor.

Samsung's upcoming Exynos 8895 processor is said to hit 4GHz, as long as the company can control power consumption and thermals, but the new 10nm process should help with that. If the company can hit 4GHz, it will certainly be on the top of the heap when it comes to competitors like Qualcomm and Apple.

Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 830 has reportedly passed 3GHz, but we haven't seen it hit the market yet, nor have we seen Qualcomm get anywhere near 4GHz. And sure, 4GHz on your smartphone might sound great - but is there a difference? The iPhone 6S runs at a relatively slow 1.85GHz and still feels super fast when it's being used, but at 4GHz we're talking about some serious battery life problems.

$130 version of Battlefield 1 doesn't include the game

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 10, 2016 8:34 AM CDT

EA knows it has a huge upcoming hit on its hands with Battlefield 1, expecting to sell around 15 million copies of the next-gen first-person shooter. But, would you pay $130 for Battlefield 1 Collector's Edition... if it didn't come with the game at all? I thought not.

Throwing down $130 for the Battlefield 1 Collector's Edition will give you a status, steel book, cloth poster and "Messenger pigeon tube with exclusive DLC content, Exclusive patch, and Premium packaging", reports Destructoid. The listing on Amazon actually states: "Battlefield 1 Exclusive Collector's Edition - Does Not Include Game".

If you want to cough up $190, you can get Battlefield 1 included - oh, how nice! - and if you want the Deluxe version of the game, you'll need to spend a hefty $210. Now, I totally understand hardcore fans spending $130 on Battlefield 1 Collector's Edition, but to not even include a copy of the game for $130 is utterly ridiculous.

No Man's Sky suffers FPS drops, texture pop-ins on PS4

No Man's Sky can drop as far as 13FPS in some stages and suffers from distracting texture pop-ins on ship fly-bys.

No Man's Sky suffers FPS drops, texture pop-ins on PS4

I'm enjoying my time with No Man's Sky so far--the game is absolutely beautiful and is quite an interesting experience. However I am aware of its faults, some of which are glaring distractions that really break the immersion. Some of the major faults are the ugly texture pop-ins that occur when you're flying above land in your ship, and Digital Foundry has found that No Man's Sky can dip far below its 30FPS mark--as low as 13FPS in some cases.

Now before we start dismissing Hello Games' procedurally generated exploration sim as a "broken game," we need some context. The game handles its frame rates exceedingly well on Sony's PlayStation 4, providing near-consistent 30FPS in almost every moment--even during cluttered space battles with frigate ships, planets, asteroids and pirates blasting you down, as well as high-volume planets with tons of flora and fauna. But there's some moments that trigger some noticable FPS drops, namely when you're flying across a new planet's surface.

Sony sends invites out for PS4 Neo reveal event

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 10, 2016 6:13 AM CDT

Sony is holding an official PlayStation Meeting event on September 7 where it will almost certainly unveil the new 4K-ready PlayStation 4 Neo console.

Sony sends invites out for PS4 Neo reveal event

Just yesterday we reported that Sony would reveal its new upgraded PlayStation 4K (aka PS4 Neo, PS4.5) console on September 7, and now we have even more proof as Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed an official event for the same day. Thanks to leaked documents we know that the PlayStation 4 Neo will upscale 1080p games to 4K resolution thanks to its upgraded GPU, which is likely based on a heavily customized variant of AMD's new Polaris GPU tech, RAM bandwidth and an overclocked Jaguar CPU.

SIE has sent out official press invites for the PlayStation Meeting in New York that kicks off at 3PM EST on September 7. Expect official livestreams and tons of coverage/FAQs from Sony if the PS4K is revealed, and we'll keep you updated as well.

Dragon Quest X coming to next-gen Nintendo NX console

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 10, 2016 2:15 AM CDT

Dragon Quest X has been in the making for what feels like forever, where it was released during the slide of Nintendo Wii sales, and then hit the Wii U, 3DS and PC later.

None of them have been successful, but Dragon Quest X is now coming to Nintendo's next-gen NX console, according to Weekly Famitsu. Dragon Quest X producer Yosuke Saito and director Chikara Saito have confirmed that there's an NX version of the game coming, alongside the already announced PS4 version.

There are some changes and updates that will arrive with Dragon Quest X, but Dragon Quest XI "looks to be a more traditional, single-player entry in the series, and has already been announced for the 3DS and PS4", reports Destructoid.
