Rockstar says GTA 6 will run at 30 FPS, and its tech team is still unsure about a 60 FPS mode

Rockstar's history offers little hope, as GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 both launched at 30 FPS with no 60 FPS mode ever arriving for the latter.

TL;DR: GTA 6 will target 30 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles, and Rockstar hasn't confirmed a 60 FPS mode at launch or later. Digital Foundry's analysis shows native 2560x1440 on PS5 with stable 30 FPS. PS5 Pro's minor CPU gains make day-one 60 FPS unlikely; launch is November 19.

Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch at 30 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. Moreover, Rockstar is not yet sure whether a 60 FPS performance mode will be available at launch or at any point in the future.

The confirmation came from Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, who spoke with YouTuber and journalist Davy Jones of Flow Games during a behind-the-scenes visit to the studio ahead of yesterday's Extended Look reveal.

Nelson confirmed the 30 FPS target, but said he would need to consult the technical team to determine whether a 60 FPS option was possible, either at launch or post-launch. He also said he currently has no details on the resolution or whether ray tracing is in use, beyond the performance target itself.

Digital Foundry, which analysed the Extended Look footage, found that GTA 6 appears to run at a native 2560x1440 resolution on PS5. The game delivered a relatively stable and well-paced 30 FPS output, with only very occasional single-frame drops.

GTA 5 launched at 30 FPS on PS3 and Xbox 360 and didn't receive a 60 FPS upgrade until the enhanced edition arrived years later on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. Red Dead Redemption 2 still doesn't have an official 60 FPS mode on any current hardware. This means a performance mode for GTA 6, if it comes at all, will likely be a post-launch addition rather than a day-one option.

Digital Foundry also notes that while the PS5 Pro's GPU and ray tracing hardware offer meaningful improvements, its CPU is almost the same as the base PS5. In CPU-limited scenarios, that translates to roughly a seven per cent performance gain. That is unlikely to be enough to make 60 FPS viable.
