DOTA 2's The International prize pool passes $20 million
DOTA 2 fans are some of the most hardcore gamers out there, with The International continuing to pull in more and more money. This year, DOTA 2's The International has a prize pool of over $20 million, and it will continue to expand throughout the week.
Rewinding back to 2011 with The International debuting with $1 million up for grabs, but then Valve changed things up in 2013 with the saleable Interactive Compendium which raises money from the crowd, and hit $2.8 million at the time. Last year, The International had a huge $18 million prize pool and now we're already past that and into unknown territory.
If we consider that the largest prize pool for Hearthstone hit $1 million, CS:GO with the same $1 million and Halo with $2.5 million, DOTA 2 blows them all away with money to spare.

Telltale's Batman game runs at just 1280x614 on Xbox One
Telltale has found itself in a web of utter crap surrounding the launch of Batman - The Telltale Series, with more than enough problems on the PC version of the game to keep the developer in gamers' bad books for years. But what about the console version, surely that's fine? Nope.
Digital Foundry's latest analysis on the game could see Batman - The Telltale Series as one of the worst performing games of recent memory, with the site reporting that the letterboxed presentation has the PS4 rendering the game at 1600x766 while the Xbox One version is barely capable of 1280x614. DF notes that the Xbox One version is utilizing some anti-aliasing, so there's that.
Digital Foundry writes: "[it] runs very inconsistently on both consoles", where the PS4 version of Batman - The Telltale Series hits 60FPS, but at times runs at below 20FPS. The Xbox One is much closer to the 30FPS average mark, but it's still not ideal at all.

Teaser for final 'Resident Evil' film takes on Umbrella
Since 2002 the 'Resident Evil' film series has grossed nearly a billion dollars worldwide, but it's fair to say that interest have flagged with the last few entries. But Sony Pictures are looking to re-ignite the series one last time, in what's being billed as 'The Final Chapter'.
Picking up immediately after the conclusion of 2012's 'Resident Evil: Retribution', the final film in the franchise finds Alice returning The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the few remaining survivors of the apocalypse.
Starring Milla Jovovich, Wentworth Miller, Sienna Guillory, Spencer Locke, and Shawn Roberts, 'Resident Evil" The Final Chapter' hits theaters worldwide next January.

Pokemon GO has made $200 million in its first month
We all know someone who has been playing Pokemon GO obsessively over the last month, but it comes as a huge shock that Niantic has pulled in a mammoth $200 million in its first month with Pokemon GO.
Thanks to a chart from Sensor Tower, we can compare it against Clash Royale and Candy Crush Soda Saga, which both made immense amounts of month in their first month of release, but they simply can't compete with the numbers that Niantic is throwing out.
Things get better for Niantic with the $200 million made up from worldwide iOS and Android revenue, and even more money is being made from microtransactions and deals signed with McDonalds in Japan, and others that haven't been announced yet.

Dead Rising to support 4K, 144Hz, G-Sync with PC debut
Capcom is going the extra mile as usual with the upcoming debut of Dead Rising on PC.
The game will feature five save slots, native support for Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Dualshock 4 controllers, 4K resolution and beyond, uncapped framerate, 144Hz support via G-Sync, and key rebindings. In other words, pretty much everything you could ask for.
Graphics-wise, it's looking pretty good in screenshots and footage for a 10 year-old game, and of course will look even better in 4K.

5G will be here quicker if the FCC has its way
It looks like 5G could become a reality sooner than we think, with the FCC wanting to cut through the usual red tape to make things happen quicker.
A new deal has been signed with the FCC's Wireless Telecommunications Bureau that will see them skipping over the usual historic preservation reviews for small 5G cell sites throughout the US. As long as these sites won't "adversely impact" historic locations, 5G will be here faster.
The FCC will also take in some "welcome input" on how to make things even better, but this doesn't mean you will be getting a 5G-powered plan or smartphone in the next 12-18 months. We still haven't had the telecommunications industry agree on a 5G standard, and we don't have any smartphones that have 5G modems in them yet. So we're still a few years away for now.

No consoles can handle Quake Champions, says Bethesda
It's about damn time that we have a PC only game that simply can't be done on consoles because for one, the Xbox One and PS4 are so severely underpowered, and two; the TVs we have right now can't handle anything above 60FPS.
During QuakeCon 2016 last week, Bethesda boss Pete Hines told GameSpot: "There is not a console that supports our vision for [Quake Champions]. You know, Quake Champions, maybe anybody else would've been like, 'No, you have to do it, and it's got to work on every platform.' We were like, 'No, it's a PC-only thing. It's this kind of game. It's got to have this kind of performance, and it's going to be on PC full stop.' We feel very comfortable in making those calls".
Hines continued: "I guess theoretically there's a chance [it could come to consoles]. Who knows what future consoles look like? But this is full stop a PC product: 120Hz, unlocked frame rate. That's the experience we want folks to have".

Tesla owner has a heart attack, Autopilot saves his life
Tesla's autonomous driving technology continues to improve, but as with all new things that are ahead of their time, the media dives into full panic mode when something goes wrong. But what about when something goes right?
Joshua Neally from Branson, Missouri was driving his Model X electric car when the Autopilot feature helped him get to a hospital without crashing his car, or worse. Slate reports: "Neally was about 5 miles out of Springfield, near a set of interchanges just beginning to clog with merging vehicles, when he felt something coil and stiffen in his abdomen. At first he thought it was a pulled muscle. But the pain forked upward from his stomach, he said, until it felt like "a steel pole through my chest." When it refused to subside, Neally remembers calling his wife and agreeing through gasps that he should probably go to the emergency room".
When Neally experienced the pain, he was quick to react by enabling the Model X's Autopilot technology, which helped him get through the heavy traffic. Tesla's autonomous driving technology only works on highways for now, so Neally needed to drive the shorter distance to the hospital, while Autopilot handled over 20 miles of highway driving.

900 million Qualcomm-powered smartphones open to malware
Qualcomm is in some serious hot water right now, with Check Point revealing four vulnerabilities under the QuadRooter name that take advantage of issues with Qualcomm's drivers to install malware onto Qualcomm-based smartphones, in which there are 900 million right now.
The malware can hit the Qualcomm driver software such as graphics, memory and routing in order to get root level access that can hijack your smartphone. The attack doesn't even sound hard, with Engadget reporting that all an attacker needs to do is "load a seemingly innocuous, permissions-free app to deliver the payload".
There are over 900 million Android-based, Qualcomm-powered smartphones in the world, with Qualcomm powering the large majority of the 1.4 billion Android smartphones in the world right now. Most of the latest flagship smartphones use Qualcomm processors, like the LG G5, HTC 10, and some variants of the Samsung Galaxy S7.

Samsung to go all-in on curved displays with Galaxy S8
Samsung hasn't even unleashed its new Galaxy Note 7 smartphone yet and the rumor mill is already kicking off with reports of Samsung going all-in on curved displays with the next-gen Galaxy S8 smartphone.
Right now, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge have a big difference between them in that the S7 edge has a curved display whereas the Galaxy S7 has a normal flat display. Even the new Galaxy Note 7 has a beautiful dual curved display, with the Galaxy S8 rumored to be the first smartphone (after the phablet-sized Galaxy Note 7, that is) that Samsung releases with no flat version in sight.
The Korea Herald reports: "Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup if the company can provide consumers differentiated user experience through software and user-friendly functions (for the curved screen)".

Fox juggling 'X-Files' cast schedules for another season
Continuing from the confirmation from head honcho Dana Walden that Fox was attempting to mount more 'X-Files' episodes earlier this year, it seems the studio is still trying to get the deals done.
According to SlashFilm, Fox Broadcasting Company Entertainment President David Madden has confirmed the studio is trying to align schedules to make it happen. "We would obviously love to do another season. There are significant talks going on with all three of the principals. Schedules are hard but we're working hard to get this done". Walden continued, touching on some of the mixed reviews for the limited season. "I would just add the show was off the air for a very long time and was introduced to a variety of new viewers through OTT platforms. There was still a lot of time to cover in these six episodes. They had the challenge of filling in the mythology and how they go to where they were at the start of the six. Going forward, there won't be the same obligation to reset the series. "

Quake Champions could be free-to-play
Much to the huge disappointment to its hardcore fanbase, Quake Champions could very well end up being a free-to-play arena shooter.
id Software turned quite a few heads when Quake Champions was announced at E3 2016. The multiplayer-only online arena shooter seemed to resurrect the long-lost art of blistering-paced visceral action, promising "no limitations" 120Hz action with unlocked frame rates. But all of that hype could be crushed by soul-sucking microtransactions.
PC Gamer recently asked id Software's Tim Willits about Quake Champions being retail or F2P, and here's what he said: "I can definitely say that is a really hard problem, and so for us we're trying to figure out exactly what people want more of, and how they perceive it. And I'm not even trying to be cagey! It's not like we know and just aren't trying to tell anybody, we don't know and we're still trying to figure this out."

Hulu ending free streaming, expanding Yahoo parternship
Hulu is ending its free streaming service and moving to a subscription only model. By no coincidence, it's also expanding its partnership with Yahoo, who will be launching Yahoo View, an ad-supported TV streaming site.
View will feature the five newest episodes of shows from ABC, NBC, and Fox, among others -- eight days after the original air date. Also available: day-after clips and full seasons of anime shows and Korean dramas.
"For the past couple years, we've been focused on building a subscription service that provides the deepest, most personalized content experience possible to our viewers," Hulu senior VP and head of experience Ben Smith explained in a statement. "As we have continued to enhance that offering with new originals, exclusive acquisitions, and movies, the free service became very limited and no longer aligned with the Hulu experience or content strategy."

NX getting a MMORPG hints at home console component
Square Enix has confirmed that popular MMORPG Dragon Quest X will be coming to Nintendo's new NX, hinting the NX will have its own console-like component.
Over the past few days there's been lots of speculation that Nintendo's new NX hardware will have its own dedicated console hardware and won't just be a transforming handheld. Now Square Enix has added some credence to the console argument by confirming to Famitsu (via DualShockers) that Dragon Quest X, a popular MMORPG, is coming to the NX. Some time ago Square Enix implied DQX would jump to NX, but then backpedaled. Now they've confirmed it.
There's just one huge problem here: MMORPG's aren't designed for handhelds. With tens of hours of grinding, MMOs are best played on dedicated central platforms like PCs or consoles. Oddly enough Dragon Quest X was released on 3DS and mobile phones in Japan, but the experience is absolutely awful as the game is streamed from Square Enix's servers, leading to constrained bandwidth and latency issues. So why would Square Enix even port Dragon Quest X over to NX if it's so bad on a handheld? Simple: because the NX could have a console portion.

We will be selling both [versions] through the life cycle," and that the PS4 Neo will be fully backward compatible with all existing PS4 games: "All games will support the standard PS4 and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4."
