TL;DR: A 14GB high-bitrate trailer from Rockstar confirms several visual flaws in GTA 6 are present in the game's rendered image-not just streaming compression. Digital Foundry identified baked-in issues like smearing, pop-ins, geometric aliasing, fizzling details, RT noise, unstable reflections, and low-resolution reflections, though overall praise remained.

Rockstar Games quietly released a 14GB file of the Grand Theft Auto 6 gameplay reveal, which has revealed that some of the graphical problems people are noticing aren't being caused by streaming compression on Netflix or YouTube, but are actually problems within Grand Theft Auto 6 that Rockstar might not be able to fix before launch.

The 14GB high-bitrate file of the trailer was released by Rockstar Games, and while the downloadable trailer showcases a much cleaner version of the Extended Look, it has also loosely confirmed that some of the graphical problems noticed by viewers, such as smearing, pop-ins, shimmering, and fizzling details, are actually within Grand Theft Auto 6, and not just video compression artifacts.

After analyzing the high-quality footage, the tech experts at Digital Foundry pointed out several graphical issues and found that many are baked into the game's rendered image.

For those who haven't noticed any graphical problems, Digital Foundry pointed to geometric aliasing and fizzling on fine details, where the edges of fine details appear to crawl or flicker as the camera moves. While those same artifacts are clearer in the high-bitrate video file, they aren't gone completely, meaning they are characteristics of the game's rendered image. Another graphical problem DF identified was RT noise and instability, along with some reflections appearing low-resolution or blurry when the camera moves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Open a question for an answer from TweakTown's coverage of this news, or ask your own below.

Question #1

How did Digital Foundry determine that artifacts like geometric aliasing and fizzling are baked into GTA 6’s rendered image?

Digital Foundry analyzed Rockstar’s 14GB high-bitrate gameplay file and compared it to the streamed versions, finding that artifacts like geometric aliasing and fizzling were still visible in the cleaner file. Because those edge crawling and flickering details remained present even without streaming compression, DF concluded they are baked into GTA 6’s rendered image rather than solely video compression artifacts.
Question #2

Does the high-bitrate downloadable trailer show the same RT noise and reflection instability that viewers saw on YouTube or Netflix?

Question #3

Could the low-resolution or blurry reflections seen in the extended look be caused by camera movement rather than streaming?

Question #4

How does streaming compression on YouTube and Netflix exaggerate the graphical flaws shown in the GTA 6 footage?

Have a question about this content not listed here? Ask below and TweakBot will answer it.

The key takeaway is that YouTube and Netflix compression exaggerate these flaws, but the 14GB high-bitrate video file shows they are underlying rendering issues with Grand Theft Auto 6 itself. Furthermore, despite these graphical issues being identified, DF was overwhelmingly positive about Rockstar's unveiling of Grand Theft Auto 6, describing the Extended Look as "The Most Impressive Real-Time Game Graphics Yet".
