Nintendo first-party titles made up 85% of yearly game sales

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 7, 2018 1:40 PM CDT

First-party games like Super Mario Odyssey strongly drove software sales for the last fiscal year.

Nintendo first-party titles made up 85% of yearly game sales

While taking a gander at Nintendo's recent yearly earnings I noticed something not too surprising: the vast majority of total software sales were from games developed in-house by the Japanese company. In Nintendo's filings for the fiscal year ended March 2018 the games-maker reveals it sold 102.31 million copies of games across Switch, Wii U and 3DS both digitally and in-store, which strongly contributed to the $3.7 billion (1.055 trillion yen) earned during the period.

In specific figures, the filings also note that first party games made up 85% of total software sales during the year, or about 82 million units. Considering IPs like Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon are huge heavy-hitting sales powerhouses, this trend towards first-party dominance should continue throughout the Switch's life cycle. Nintendo plans to continue driving its "distinctive software-driven hardware and software business" with a steady stream of new games and content to keep players actively engaged in the respective platform ecosystems.

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin beaten in 2.5 hours

Speedrunner Distortion2 juggles the sheer difficulty of Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin with all of the items, rolls, bosses and everything in-between. He completes the game in exactly 2 hours 23 minutes and 43 seconds, taking first place in the world for speedrunning Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin.

Throughout the video Distortion2 mentions that after he completes the speedrun of Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin there is nothing to drive him back to the game. This suggests that he won't be trying to beat the new record anytime soon, unless another player thinks that they can do better and knocks him down from first place.

PUBG for Xbox One new patch adds scope FoV changes & more

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 7, 2018 1:00 AM CDT

PUBG Corp has taken to their Xbox One community forums to announce the new patch that is on its way in the near future.

PUBG for Xbox One new patch adds scope FoV changes & more

The patch will be adding several different things, some include: Settings menu changes, scope field of view changes, out of game menu changes and bug fixes.

According to the post on the Xbox One PUBG forums "The test server is back! This time around we're planning to run the test for just three days. Depending on how the test goes, we may decide to extend it further. The test includes both Miramar and Erangel so we can test our matchmaking systems before bringing Miramar to live servers. That means that whenever you select a queue, the game will randomly drop you into one of the two possible maps. After we've tested our matchmaking systems, we may again adjust the map settings."

id Software is adding bots to Quake Champions

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | May 6, 2018 11:47 PM CDT

Quake Champions will have an update in the coming weeks that will enable bots, which will be coded clever enough to perform trick jumps and strafe jumps, just like you.

id Software is adding bots to Quake Champions

The bots will have a difficulty sliding scale that you can adjust depending on how good you are, where on the easier side of things the bots will treat you like a newb and not pick up powerful weapons and pick ups like Quad Damage. When they're harder, the bots will see you picking up a powerful weapon or Quad Damage and avoid trying to go for it, impressive.

id Software has said that the bots will arrive in two phases, with Phase 1 coming "soon" according to Quake Champions' technical director, John Dean. The bots will only be featured in a few game mods, but they'll be able to use any champion and weapon, but not the champion abilities.

Intel CPUs experiencing Spectre NG wave of security problems

Anthony Garreffa | Hacking, Security & Privacy | May 6, 2018 10:38 PM CDT

Intel is set to go through another battle with security holes in its CPUs with a revised version of Spectre found, with 8 new Spectre-like issues discovered.

Intel CPUs experiencing Spectre NG wave of security problems

Spectre Next Generation, or Spectre NG is what it's called, with Intel recently being notified of the security holes. 4 of them were rated high, while the remaining 4 were medium severity. The technical details behind Spectre NG haven't been announced, but we know that they will be similar or worse than the original Spectre, which was bad enough.

Intel is reportedly working on getting Spectre Next Generation problems fixed, with Microsoft and others working on OS level adjustments. There will reportedly be two new waves of updates, with the first coming soon and another reportedly in August, but these dates could vary depending on how bad Spectre NG really is.

The Island from Lost has been recreated in Far Cry 5

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | May 6, 2018 9:48 PM CDT

Far Cry 5 has a vast and detailed game world that you can explore for hours on end, but you know what modders are like they will rip the game apart and building beautiful and interesting things... like the island from Lost... the TV show.

The Island from Lost has been recreated in Far Cry 5

The modder behind this is 'Un-Break-Able' who says that the Lost map is an "accurate recreated map" but its not to scale over technical limitations. He explains: "Everything from as small as Sun's garden to all 9 Dharma Initiative Stations are included ... In regards to accuracy some assumptions had to be made. Such as the Hydra Station where we saw many of these rooms but how they were organised and connected in the complex was impossible to determine exactly but was made to the best of my knowledge".

The map is playable for 10 minutes as there are restrictions on the game and its editor, enough time to tease you but not to get lost in the world of Lost.

Intel could unveil its new graphics card at CES 2019

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | May 6, 2018 8:55 PM CDT

Intel has been working hard on their new GPU with industry sources telling TweakTown that they've reached the end of this first step, and are now preparing for the big launch.

Intel could unveil its new graphics card at CES 2019

The company has spent the better part of two years on this, and in the last minute poached key talent from AMD with Raja Koduri and Chris Hook. Not only that, but Intel secured Athlon and Ryzen CPU architect Jim Keller who was working at Tesla until last week, and are now pushing full steam ahead with the next generation Intel graphics core.

My sources are telling me to expect something late this year with all attention to be placed on Intel at CES 2019 in January, where Intel could unveil their new GPU. A discrete graphics card launch from Intel would be a huge deal to gamers, as NVIDIA has no competition in the high-end graphics card market from AMD whatsoever.

Activision begins hyping the PC version of COD: Black Ops 4

Activision has activated the hype train for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 by saying that it has provided "significant" resources for the PC version of the game.

Activision begins hyping the PC version of COD: Black Ops 4

In the recent Activision Blizzard earnings call, company president and COO Coddy Johnson said that they are laser-focused on the PC version of COD: Black Ops 4, saying that it "is a game that will push the envelope with innovation". Johnson added that Activision has "invested significant dedicated resources to ensure we can deliver a great PC game".

This is a strange but very welcoming move by Activision, but I'm not going to commit any hope to the game until it's out. I think they're trying to attract the tens of millions of gamers playing Battlegrounds and Fortnite on the PC to be interested in COD: Black Ops 4, but unless they deliver it'll just be a polished console port.

6 minutes of Star Citizen gameplay revealed, 1080p @ 60FPS

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 5, 2018 5:00 AM CDT

A while back we heard about Star Citizen breaking a new milestone of crowdfunding, reaching a massive $181m+. Now the space adventure title has been showcased in 6 minutes of smooth gameplay footage.

6 minutes of Star Citizen gameplay revealed, 1080p @ 60FPS

Above is the gameplay footage and what we can see from it is that the mission probably couldn't be more dull and boring. All that was done was the player retrieved a box and nothing more than that, throughout the extraction though we can visually see the Star Citizen world and what is claimed to be running at 1080p 60FPS.

According to some players in the comment section below the video, IGN actually would of joined a private server to record this game footage, as the players claim that there is no way for the title in its current state to be this optimized. Some comments even stress that it is hard to maintain even a solid 30FPS while in a 50 man server. This is not confirmed though so do take the footage with a grain of salt.

Intel's Z390 chipset will support current Coffee Lake S CPUs

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | May 5, 2018 1:38 AM CDT

Intel is expected to launch its refreshed Z390 chipset in the next couple of months, where I'm sure Chipzilla will show off the Z390 during Computex 2018 next week.

Intel's Z390 chipset will support current Coffee Lake S CPUs

We're now being exposed to some of the secrets behind the Z390 chipset, with SuperMicro's upcoming and always confusingly named C9Z390-CG-IW. The board packed a Core i7-8700T processor, a low-power 6C/12T chip that is already available, as well as the Core i7-8700K which is an 8C/16T chip.

This means that the new Z390 chipset will support all current-gen Coffee Lake S (CFS) parts, as it uses the same LGA1151 socket found in current-gen 300-series motherboards. We should expect Intel to show off more about the Z390 next month at Computex, and we'll be there bringing you the news as it happens.
