Sony's E3 2018 showcase headlined by PS4 exclusives

Sony's big E3 2018 presser will focus on what sells PS4 consoles: games.

Sony's E3 2018 showcase headlined by PS4 exclusives

Like any console-maker, games are massively important to Sony's PlayStation business, especially when it comes to exclusives. At E3 2018, Sony will continue its long-standing tradition of showcasing tantalizing sizzle reels of juggernaut PS exclusive titles: the company announced its E3 press conference will revolve around four major headliners including Death Stranding, The Last of Us II, Marvel's Spider-Man, and Ghost of Tsushima.

I'm predicting that we should get a concrete release date for Death Stranding at the event, or at the very least a "2019" release window. We already know the game will launch "before the 2020 Olympics," and Kojima has said progress on Death Stranding is going quite well.

Bethesda teases RAGE 2, may have robust online modes

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 11, 2018 12:45 PM CDT

Following the recent Walmart Canada leak, Bethesda teases what certainly has to be RAGE 2.

Bethesda teases RAGE 2, may have robust online modes

id Software's next big game appears to be RAGE 2, and should be highlighted during Bethesda's big E3 2018 showcase in June. But the publisher's Twitter account strongly hints the post-apocalyptic shooter sequel could be revealed this month--on May 14th to be exact. Bethesda's Twitter has been ramping up with not-so-subtle teases and at the time of writing has five pictures that progressively hint at RAGE 2's presence.

What's most interesting about the images is that they show areas around the world, which could indicate a global cross-continent experience. The first image is of Big Ben, and another image shows a Tokyo street. This could indicate RAGE 2 will have an online live service component of some sort with more widespread and dynamic multiplayer action, possibly both drop-in/drop-out online co-op and/or competitive play. In a sense there's a very real possibility RAGE 2 could mirror Borderlands in terms of play modes.

BioWare discusses unannounced titles and details Anthem

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 11, 2018 5:00 AM CDT

BioWare has revealed in a blogpost that the company is currently looking to the future for what games they will be producing, in the post it was revealed that there is unannounced projects in the works.

BioWare discusses unannounced titles and details Anthem

Casey Hudson, BioWare exec explains in a blogpost that BioWare has "teams envisioning future BioWare games, and they're designing approaches that are different from Anthem-including one that's very Dragon Age." This could suggest one of two things, either BioWare is creating another Dragon Age game and this is a clue, or BioWare has a completely new title in the works that shares similar gameplay aspects.

Hudson also details the upcoming Anthem, he explains that BioWare's main goal when creating a game is that the players should feel as if they are the center of the story. Even though Anthem is a multiplayer title BioWare still chooses to respectfully stand by this rule, Hudson says "In a BioWare game, you should feel like the story is about you. You create your own character, you decide what happens next, and you become the hero. I think the reason people are concerned about whether these things are possible in a multiplayer game is because it just hasn't been solved well before."

Former Bandai dev leaks Super Smash Bros. engine details

Jak Connor | Gaming | May 11, 2018 1:00 AM CDT

As every Nintendo Switch owner patiently waits for the new Super Smash Bros, a leak for the upcoming titles game engine has surfaced, strangely enough the leak comes from a former Bandai developer.

Former Bandai dev leaks Super Smash Bros. engine details

There is very little confirmed knowledge for the new Super Smash Bros, so far we know Masahiro Sakurai is working on the project and that the title is planned for release sometime this year. Former Bandai Namco developer, Tiago Sonobe has leaked information about the games engine, according to the tweet which has now been removed, the engine for the new Super Smash Bros was actually created by Sonobe and not Nintendo.

After this post was made both the post and the account has been deleted. Nintendo and Bandai are yet to give an official statement about this matter so do take this information with a grain of salt for the time being. Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo Switch will be released sometime this year.

The company made $1.3 billion in operating profit, which is an even larger increase of 134% over last year, with gross margins pumped by 64.5%. NVIDIA says that the margin growth comes down to "higher value platforms in the GPU segment", meaning more high-end graphics cards were sold, with more profit made on each of them.

NVIDIA saw a huge increase in their GPU sales with $2.77 billion, a 77% increase year-on-year with most of the money being made on the gaming side of things with GeForce GTX 10 series cards. GTX 10 series sales represented $1.7 billion of that $2.77 billion, a 68% increase over last year.

The hottest gaming monitor on the market is still in the making, but with each passing month we're getting closer to its release and now we're seeing a new listing for the ASUS ROG Swift PG27UQ.

ASUS ROG Swift 4K 144Hz G-Sync monitor listed for over $3000

ASUS might not show much off in its product name, but the ROG Swift PG27UQ is a 27-inch 4K 144Hz monitor with NVIDIA's G-Sync technology. The monitor is listed on sicomputers.nl for a huge $3000, but this will give you HDR10, 1000 nits of brightness, direct LED backlighting, and 384 zones with quantum dot film. We are all here for 3840 x 2160 at 144Hz, though... right?!

We should expect NVIDIA to fully unveil and have them showcased during Computex 2018 which is only a few weeks away, and I'm sure ASUS and Acer will be showing them off in force during the show.

Google's new TPU 3.0 revealed, REQUIRES liquid cooling

Google has just blown the industry away with their new TPU 3.0, their next-gen custom-designed processor that is ridiculously over-powered to train machine learning systems.

Google's new TPU 3.0 revealed, REQUIRES liquid cooling

TPU 3.0 is 8x faster than its predecessor, with the first TPU being released in 2015, the company has made leaps and bounds. A pod of TPU 2.0s packed ASICs that featured 64GB of HBM that pumped out 2.4TB/sec, which is pretty insane. In comparison, the Radeon RX Vega 64 with 8GB of HBM2 is capable of 512GB/sec memory bandwidth.

Google should be the new AI chip champion with its TPU 3.0 ready for TensorFlow use, as well as a refined push into the cloud from Google. The new TPU 3.0 chips are so next-level that they require and use liquid cooling to keep them cool, but provide a huge 100 PFLOPs of machine learning power... crazy stuff.

Chuwi's new NiGame PC packs Radeon RX Vega M graphics

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | May 9, 2018 11:15 PM CDT

AMD might not be selling many (see none) Radeon RX Vega graphics cards to PC gamers and miners, but they are cutting Vega GPU cores into smaller amounts and sending them to Intel en masse to pump into their 8th-gen Core processors.

Chuwi's new NiGame PC packs Radeon RX Vega M graphics

The latest product to feature Radeon RX Vega M GH graphics is the new Chuwi HiGame PC which the company is launching on Indiegogo with special pre-order pricing. Chuwi is offering two variants of its HiGame PC, one that rocks the Core i5-8305G processor, 8GB of DDR4 and 128GB of SSD storage for $1299 (or $999 for the special IndieGogo pricing).

The beefier Core i7-8709G model has the same 8GB of DDR4 but bumps the storage to 256GB for $1499 (or $1299 for the Indiegogo special).

Intel smashes Stanford DAWNBench v1 inference tests

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | May 9, 2018 8:29 PM CDT

Intel might be working on its first foray into GPUs in the last 20 years, but in the meantime they're continuing to dominate the market with their Xeon CPUs with some rather impressive results coming out of Stanford and the Dawn Benchmark and Competition.

Intel smashes Stanford DAWNBench v1 inference tests

The battle was between Intel's Xeon, Google's TPU v2 and NVIDIA's various GPUs including the Tesla V100. ImageNet used to take around 10 days to be trained, but now it can be done in just 31 minutes thanks to the super-powered Google TPU v2, representing an increase of a mind blowing 477x.

But it's not just brute speed as these companies and universties have to spend millions of dollars on hardware, so cost efficiency plays a big part, and that's where Intel kills it. Without using a GPU at all, Intel Xeon Scalable processors were able to process 10,000 images for just $0.02 and a latency of just 9.96ms.

EA hints Battlefield V's campaign is episodic

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 9, 2018 4:29 PM CDT

EA's own upper management strongly underlines the veracity of previous Battlefield V campaign rumors.

EA hints Battlefield V's campaign is episodic

A few months ago sources told VentureBeat that Battlefield V's campaign would once again be episodic, meaning every mission or sets of missions would change perspectives in a fresh location, and that the story mode would be complete with optional co-op. Now EA seems to hint these rumors were accurate.

In its most recent Q4'18 earnings call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said something quite interesting about the next Battlefield game: the exec referred to the game's "singleplayer stories," as in plural. Now this could be a generalization and refer to each mission as telling a different story or something along those lines...or...it could be an indicator that Battlefield V's campaign will have rotating, multi-perspective objectives and levels. The game is also supposedly set in World War II, and given Call of Duty WWII's tremendous success, this makes a lot of sense and offers DICE a natural progressive shift from Battlefield 1's established assets and toolset.
