Epistar is the top LED producer in Taiwan. The factory located at the Longtan branch of the Hsinchu Science Park. The report indicates that Apple has sent a development team to Taiwan to work on the project. There are some distinct advantages for laptops that use MicroLED displays compared to standard LCD or OLED displays.

Those advantages include higher brightness, higher dynamic range, and a fuller color gamut. MicroLED tech also supports a faster update rate, wider viewing angles, and lower power consumption. Devices using the new screen tech can also be made thinner, making them more portable.

These creepy robot waiters are being used for social distancing

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Jun 1, 2020 5:38 AM CDT

A restaurant in the Netherlands has introduced a new robot that is designed to greet customers upon their entry as well as reduce human-to-human contact amid the coronavirus pandemic.

These creepy robot waiters are being used for social distancing

Above, you can see an image of the red-and-white robots, and according to the Associated Press, these robots will be used to pick up dirty dishes from tables, greet customers, serving food and other general staff requirements. Due to robots not being able to get the coronavirus, the implementation of them will reduce human-to-human contact, and thus the overall transmission of the coronavirus.

The Netherlands restaurant that has implemented these robots is the Royal Palace restaurant in the town of Renesse. According to Leah Hu, whose family is the owner of the Royal Palace, "They help us with the work we do. We are often busy and cleaning tables and the robots give us an extra hand. We are not disappearing. We are still here. They will always need people in this industry."

Anonymous releases video threatening to expose Minneapolis Police

Jak Connor | Hacking, Security & Privacy | Jun 1, 2020 3:32 AM CDT

Anonymous seems to have awoken once again, and this time the hacktivist group is targeting the main source of controversy, the Minneapolis Police Department.

Anonymous releases video threatening to expose Minneapolis Police

In a video released onto the official Anonymous Twitter account, we see a member of the group wearing the iconic Guy Fawkes mask, talking directly into the camera. The member explains that officers who believe they can kill people and commit other crimes need to be held accountable "just like the rest of us", otherwise they will think they have a license to do whatever they want.

The video goes onto say that the people have "had enough of this corruption and violence from an organization that promises to keep them safe". Anonymous then begins to target the Minneapolis Police Department by saying that the officers behind the George Floyd killing need to face charges, and officer Chauvin should face murder charges. "Unfortunately, we do not trust your corrupted organization to carry out justice, so we will be exposing your many crimes to the world".

Here's the video of SpaceX astronauts arriving on ISS making history

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Jun 1, 2020 2:33 AM CDT

SpaceX has just made history by safely delivering two astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS) via a commercially-made spacecraft.

Here's the video of SpaceX astronauts arriving on ISS making history

If you happened to miss out on the news, SpaceX has just made a massive mark on the future of the space industry as the company just launched the first commercially-made spacecraft to the ISS. So what does this mean for the future of space travel? It means that space has been opened up to the public, commercial contracts, and won't primarily be used by governments any more. For example, SpaceX has already partnered with a space-tourism business that is responsible for taking passenger trips to space.

On top of this opening up the space industry, this is also the very first mission with astronauts for SpaceX, and we are happy to report that astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley have safely arrived aboard the ISS (see above video). SpaceX has now provided companies with an alternative solution for accessing space, and due to the Dragon 2 spacecraft being designed to deliver seven astronauts to space, it has dramatically reduced the cost-per-seat of a round trip to the ISS.

Intel DG1 rumor: SLOWER than Radeon RX 560, GeForce GTX 1050 Ti

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | May 31, 2020 8:34 PM CDT

If you were expecting Intel's new DG1 discrete graphics card to come out and destroy NVIDIA's flagship GeForce RTX 2080 Ti -- well, you would be wrong... very, very wrong.

Intel DG1 rumor: SLOWER than Radeon RX 560, GeForce GTX 1050 Ti

In the latest leaks on DG1, APISAK has noticed a new entry for the Intel DG1 discrete graphics card -- which is in SDV (or Software Development Vehicle) form. This card won't be sold as a consumer product at all, but DG1 is based on the Gen12 (Xe) architecture that will sport 96 execution units, which means up to 768 unified cores.

We should expect Intel DG1 to come with either 3GB or 6GB of RAM, and will not be coming out and taking swings at AMD and its Navi GPU architecture, or NVIDIA's current-gen Turing or upcoming Ampere GPU architectures. Instead, it will be a low-end offering that will be used in Tiger Lake-based ultra-low-power APUs from Intel.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa reiterates the Switch is still in the middle of its life cycle, hinting the console will last at least four more years before a new iteration arrives.

Switch is in the middle of its life cycle, Nintendo president says

In a recent Nintendo Q&A session from its FY2020 financials, Nintendo President Shuntaro confirms the Switch is halfway through its lifespan. The Switch turned four years old and managed to move over 55 million units to date, so the Switch hardware family should continue on for another four more years.

"Nintendo Switch has just entered the middle of its life cycle, and there are two system versions in the family - Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite - so we have not changed our view that it is possible to aim for growth that is unlike the life cycle of any other hardware to date," Mr. Furukawa said, strongly hinting more Switch hardware iterations are on the way.

SpaceX astronaut launch breaks commercial space industry into new era

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | May 31, 2020 6:28 AM CDT

SpaceX has just recently made its mark on space history forever, as now the United States will have continued access to the International Space Station without having to rely on the Russian Soyuz spacecraft.

SpaceX astronaut launch breaks commercial space industry into new era

Not only has this launch marked history in this way, but it is also the first successful launch to the ISS for SpaceX. The two astronauts aboard the Falcon 9 rocket are Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley, and are now the first NASA astronauts from Florida to journey to the ISS since 2011. At the time of writing this, the astronauts are about 1 hour out from docking with the ISS, so if you want to watch this historic moment via a livestream video, you can do so above.

It has previously been reported that seats aboard the Russian Soyuz spacecraft comes in at a cost of $90 million per seat, and SpaceX has now provided an alternative that is cheaper to launch at $60 million. On top of that, SpaceX has changed commercial space forever as it has already partnered with a private company called Space Adventures, and this company is responsible for passenger trips to space. This move by SpaceX somewhat assists in tourism coming to space, and truly is a mark on space history as we know it.

PS5, Xbox Series X, and next-gen exclusives: What you need to know

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 31, 2020 2:14 AM CDT

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X might have similar specs and both use 7nm SoCs from AMD, but their next-gen business models are very different. We thought it prudent to discuss how Microsoft and Sony are approaching the new generation of console gaming.

PS5, Xbox Series X, and next-gen exclusives: What you need to know

Microsoft and Sony handle gaming very differently. To really understand the big differences between the PlayStation 5's and Xbox Series X's game plans, we have to take a quick look at each of the two company's business segments.

Sony cares a lot more about gaming than Microsoft does. Sony made $17 billion from PlayStation in FY2019 versus Microsoft's $10 billion from Xbox. The Japanese titan is locked to the PlayStation hardware and services ecosystem, and as a result, it's more laser-targeted on system-selling exclusives that've helped the PS4 move 110.4 million units worldwide.

New PS4 games also required to run on PlayStation 5

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 30, 2020 7:02 PM CDT

Sony's cross-gen plans have leaked out, confirming newer PS4 games will also need to be compatible with the PS5 as well.

New PS4 games also required to run on PlayStation 5

Unlike the Xbox Series X, the PS5 will have exclusives at launch. Sony is clearly delineating the PS4 and PS5 hardware generations right out of the gate. This means we'll see two versions of third-party games releasing in 2020 and beyond: a PS4 SKU, and a separate PS5 SKU with enhanced performance like faster loading times, ray tracing, enhanced frame rates and resolution.

Sony has established a mandate to ensure the cross-gen dual game release strategy rolls out as smooth as possible. PS4 games submitted to Sony for certification on or after July 13 must also run on the next-gen PS5. The info comes from internal development slides provided to Eurogamer, and confirms its forward-compatibility plans.

PlayStation 5 has the best architecture in console history, devs say

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 30, 2020 5:35 PM CDT

Making games for and porting games onto Sony's next-gen PS5 might end up being easier than any other console ever released.

PlayStation 5 has the best architecture in console history, devs say

Although the PS5 is a huge leap in power over the PS4, complete with next-gen exclusives that aren't held back by the PS4, Sony isn't over-complicating things for developers. Game devs are pretty happy with the PS5's new streamlined x86 architectural design and toolsets. We still don't know what kind of new features the PS5 OS and software stack offers devs, but that hasn't stop games-makers from praising the system behind the scenes.

The positive reactions started back in 2019 under Sony's PR megaphone. SIE president Jim Ryan said devs are getting code up on the PS5 with tremendous speed and ease. Then Sony's Shuhei Yoshida echoed the same thing a month later.

Scorn trailer on Xbox Series X was actually running on RTX 2080 Ti GPU

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | May 29, 2020 11:53 PM CDT

You might remember the trailer to Scorn from earlier this month, where it is an exclusive to the Microsoft Xbox Series X console and to the PC. It's from developer Ebb Software and as Derek explains it, it's an "ultra-bizarre horror fest" that is like "stepping into an HR Giger painting".

Scorn trailer on Xbox Series X was actually running on RTX 2080 Ti GPU

Well, that 4K 60FPS goodness we all thought was an Xbox Series X console? Yeah nah -- that was a PC. In a recent interview with Wccftech, Ebb Software's Game Director Ljubomir Peklar talked about the game -- you can read the full interview here -- but more importantly what hardware the team used to show us that "in-engine footage representative of expected Xbox Series X visual quality".

Peklar explained: "Now, this is a tricky question as for some reason a lot of people feel that it should be quite easy to get 4K 60FPS on the PC even with this graphical fidelity, and that really isn't the case. For the showcase we used 2080Ti and a Ryzen processor just because there was no reason not to use it, but a 2070 Super with a mixture of settings is adequate to run the game at 4K 60FPS".

AMD codename Warhol: 5th Gen Ryzen CPU, Zen 3, 7nm, 2022 release

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | May 29, 2020 11:24 PM CDT

It seems now is the time for maximum AMD next-gen CPU hype, with new rumors teasing the next-gen Ryzen 5000 series CPU family based on Zen 3 being codenamed "Warhol".

AMD codename Warhol: 5th Gen Ryzen CPU, Zen 3, 7nm, 2022 release

We know that "Raphael" will be associated with AMD's next-gen Zen 4 architecture, and it seems Raphael might have a built-in Navi-based GPU. This would be a gigantic deal if it happens, but Warhol would come before Raphael and all we know is that it'll be based on the Zen 3 architecture, the current 7nm node from TSMC, and feature PCIe 4.0 connectivity.

Warhol is the codename to what we will see AMD unveil as the Ryzen 5000 series of CPUs, where right now we're on the current Zen 2-based Ryzen 3000 series CPUs codenamed Matisse. After this we have the Ryzen 4000 series for desktop codenamed Vermeer, after that Ryzen 5000 series for desktop codenamed Warhol, and after that, we have Ryzen 6000 series desktop CPUs codenamed Raphael.
