Xbox Series X price confirmed, offers 4K 60-120FPS gaming for $499

The Xbox Series X will offer higher-end 4K 60-120FPS gaming in an accessible, all-in-one package for $499. This price point is great news for consumers; The Series X has the same MSRP as the Xbox One X in 2017 but offers tremendous power gains for the same cost.

The Series X is twice as powerful with a 12TFLOP Navi 2 GPU for hardware-accelerated ray-tracing and gaming perf at native 4K 60FPS, complemented with a 3.8GHz 8-core Zen 2 CPU for fast, efficient processing and a revolutionary PCIe 4.0 SSD with 2.4GB/sec data transfer speeds. RAM is also upped to 16GB of GDDR6 memory over the One X's 12GB of GDDR5.

GeForce RTX 3080: Ethereum mining BEAST, 3-4x better than RTX 2080

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Sep 9, 2020 3:50 AM CDT

Update: VideoCardz tweeted that these images are in fact not from crypto miners, but from Chinese retailers.

GeForce RTX 3080: Ethereum mining BEAST, 3-4x better than RTX 2080

Well, it looks like GeForce RTX 3080 stock is going to be non-existent thanks to crypto miners -- as the new Ampere-based GeForce RTX 3080 is an Ethereum mining beast.

According to photos surfacing on China's Baidu forums, crypto miners are buying the new GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards in major bulk -- to fill their ETH crypto mines. You can see in the above images there are boxes of custom GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards.

1TB SSD expansion for Xbox Series X console could cost $220

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 9, 2020 2:49 AM CDT

Microsoft looks to be charging a pretty big chunk of cash for 1TB of ultra-fast SSD expansion goodness for its next-gen Xbox Series X console according to a new leak.

1TB SSD expansion for Xbox Series X console could cost $220

A new tweet from Idle Sloth on Twitter spotted the 1TB SSD expansion for the Xbox Series X, with the drive itself made by Seagate, to cost $219.99. It's not too expensive, considering a 1TB PCIe 4.0-capable NVMe SSD costs $190-$200 for the PC -- a $20 premium isn't bad.

Alternatively, you could use an external storage expansion through the USB 3.2 connection on the Xbox Series X, too.

Here's the new GeForce RTX 3090, RTX 3080, RTX 3070 in a family photo

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Sep 9, 2020 2:12 AM CDT

NVIDIA revealed its trio of Ampere-based GeForce RTX 30 series cards last week, but now we have a family photo of all three of them side-by-side.

Here's the new GeForce RTX 3090, RTX 3080, RTX 3070 in a family photo

From left to right we have the GeForce RTX 3090 in all its girth and glory, next to it we have the GeForce RTX 3080 and on the far right the GeForce RTX 3070. It's funny, the GeForce RTX 3090 is so absurdly large that it makes the still-chunky GeForce RTX 3080 look small, and the RTX 3070 puny in comparison.

NVIDIA has a huge triple-slot design for the GeForce RTX 3090, which houses 24GB of GDDR6X memory while the GeForce RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 are both dual-slot graphics cards. The GeForce RTX 3070 has its dual fans on the front, with no rear fan (unlike the other two cards).

HoloLens 2 available at Microsoft Store for anyone who can afford it

Kevin Carbotte | Extended Reality (XR) | Sep 9, 2020 1:32 AM CDT

Microsoft's HoloLens 2 is now available to anyone, not just enterprise companies. You can order the mixed reality headset from the Microsoft Store in quantities as low as one.

HoloLens 2 available at Microsoft Store for anyone who can afford it

Microsoft is finally making the HoloLens 2 headset available to anyone with the means to pay for it. Until now, the device was only available to select customers, and those customers were limited to the largest companies in the world.

HoloLens 2 may be available to consumers now, but we don't expect many people actually to buy one. Microsoft's Mixed Reality technology is awe-inspiring, but it's also quite costly. One of these devices will set you back a staggering $3500.

Big Navi teased: AMD marketing boss 'The sun will come out tomorrow'

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Sep 9, 2020 1:05 AM CDT

It seems AMD is going to drop some big Big Navi news right in the middle of every tech reviewer in the world testing their new GeForce RTX 3080.

Big Navi teased: AMD marketing boss 'The sun will come out tomorrow'

AMD's Chief Gaming Architect and Marketing Frank Azor tweeted something very cryptic on Twitter just before, which is from "Tomorrow" which is a show tune from the musical Annie. The song itself pushes out an optimistic view of life -- so I guess AMD is telling us to continue being happy and optimistic for Radeon.

Even though NVIDIA just came out and dropped a $699 total freaking beast of a graphics card that out performs its previous-gen flagship $1199 card, a card that AMD couldn't match with RDNA (Radeon RX 5700 XT) and was meant to equal, or beat with Big Navi.

Phison's new E18 SSD controller is ridiculous, offers 7GB/sec speeds

Anthony Garreffa | Storage | Sep 8, 2020 8:46 PM CDT

Phison has truly delivered the speedy SSD goods with its new E18 controller, with the new PS5018-E18 NVMe SSD controller that is now making its way into high-end SSDs from the likes of Sabrent.

Crysis Remastered has a 'Can it Run Crysis' graphics setting

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 8, 2020 8:07 PM CDT

I still remember working at Getright Computers, the old retailer here in South Australia (a couple of years before I joined TweakTown) back when Crysis was released in 2007.

Crysis Remastered has a 'Can it Run Crysis' graphics setting

I had all of my regular customers at the time coming in building new PCs for it, and I spent just over $10,000 AUD on a new gaming PC for myself to play it. It was incredible, I remember every single moment -- and the years of tweaking hardware, buying new GPUs as they were released -- just to run it.

The entire 'can it run Crysis' thing became a meme until really, only recently when games like Control and Flight Simulator were released and really began to strain even $2499 graphics cards like the NVIDIA TITAN RTX.

Death Stranding update adds DLSS support for Ampere GPU, new 8K preset

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 8, 2020 7:13 PM CDT

Kojima Productions have very silently pushed out a new update for Death Stranding, something that adds DLSS support for Ampere-based GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards.

Death Stranding update adds DLSS support for Ampere GPU, new 8K preset

The new update adds DLSS 2.1 support, which delivers support for 8K upscaling -- something that will be used for the GeForce RTX 3090 now that Death Stranding has a "DLSS 8K performance mode". As someone who has been benchmarking at 8K for many years now, I can't wait to test that out very soon.

The patch notes explain: "This update made the game able to recognize 8K resolution, it was previously limited to 4K. It also adds the Ultra Performance DLSS preset created specifically for 8K, it's not visible in the game because it requires an NVIDIA driver update".

Nintendo: Breath of the Wild 2 news won't happen for a while

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 8, 2020 4:06 PM CDT

Breath of the Wild 2 is still deep in development, and Nintendo cautions fans not to expect updates any time soon. For now there's a new BOTW prequel set in the Hyrule Warriors series to keep you busy.

Nintendo: Breath of the Wild 2 news won't happen for a while

Today Nintendo surprised announced a Breath of the Wild prequel...but it's not what you expected. It's actually a Hyrule Warriors game set 100 years before BOTW.

The new game, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, is being developed by Koei Tecmo and shows the grand chaotic battles that set up the events of the Switch RPG. This is a huge development for the franchise and solidifies the new arc as an expansive new series that carries across more than two games.

A look back at historic video game console prices from 1977 - 2020

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 8, 2020 3:00 PM CDT

With any new console generation comes lots of talk about price, the magic number that makes or breaks a company's hardware sales. We still don't know the full price range of the entire 9th console generation, but that doesn't mean we can't take a look back at historical data to see how the industry has changed.

A look back at historic video game console prices from 1977 - 2020

Microsoft just confirmed the Xbox Series S at $299, and we could see the Series X drop at $499. But how does this compare to the 8th gen? Or the gens that came before it? To reflect on pricing trends throughout the years, I put together a series of quick graphs that compare launch pricing of key consoles across nine generations of hardware. The list starts with the Atari 2600 in 1977 and ends with the Xbox Series S in 2020.

By no means is this list exhaustive, and it's not meant to be a perfect graph of every console ever released. That'd be a nightmare considering the dozens of Pong consoles released in the '70s. As you can tell by Atariboy2600's awesome timeline table, there's a lot of consoles missing from our list.

Xbox Series S: 1440p 120FPS, 512GB SSD, ray tracing, 4K video playback

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 8, 2020 12:12 PM CDT

Microsoft finally reveals the Xbox Series S after last night's leak, confirming key specs we've known about for a while.

Xbox Series S: 1440p 120FPS, 512GB SSD, ray tracing, 4K video playback

It's official: The entry-level Xbox Series S next-gen console will launch alongside the beastly Xbox Series X in November. The Series S is a lower-powered, all-digital console that features the same 7nm SoC as the Xbox Series X, albeit with dramatic reductions in GPU (the CPU is slightly down to 3.6GHz too). A big difference is the storage reduction: The Series S features a 512GB PCIe 4.0 SSD compared to the Series X's 1TB storage.

Microsoft confirms the Series S targets 1440p 120FPS gaming. It won't target native 4K 60FPS gaming like the Series X due to its lower specs. This corroborates reports of the Series S featuring a weaker 4TFLOP Navi RDNA 2.0 GPU.

If you want your mind blown, look at this image released from Hubble

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Sep 8, 2020 2:33 AM CDT

If you are like me, and you love to see the beauty of space, then you are in the right place because NASA's Hubble Space Telescope is at it again.

If you want your mind blown, look at this image released from Hubble

So, what are we looking at? According to the Hubble Space Telescope website, the above image is of a globular cluster called NGC 1805. We are looking at a tight group of thousands of stars located near the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy 163,000 light-years away from the Milky Way. NASA describes the image to be similar to a how a beehive works.

Here's what NASA stated, "The stars orbit closely to one another, like bees swarming around a hive. In the dense centre of one of these clusters, stars are 100 to 1000 times closer together than the nearest stars are to our Sun, making planetary systems around them unlikely." The reason we are seeing two different types of star colors is because blue stars are shining brightest in near-ultraviolet light, and red stars are near-infrared. If you are interested in learning more about this gorgeous globular cluster, check out this link here.

Xbox Series S console costs $299, features no-frills slim design

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 7, 2020 11:33 PM CDT

The Xbox Series S final design was prematurely revealed in a leaked Microsoft announcement video, confirming a $299 price tag.

Xbox Series S console costs $299, features no-frills slim design

The Xbox Series S console design has leaked out, revealing a no-frills chassis that's mostly a big cooling vent. The console is rather basic and resembles an Xbox One S with a gigantic speak on the top, which is of course a vent to channel heat flow from the built-in 7nm AMD SoC. It also looks like the system will be digital-only and has no disc drive, which aligns with recent reports.

The leaked video confirms the Series S is half as wide as the Series X, which makes sense given the console's drastic reduction in power and heat output. The Series X's footlocker design is specifically made to channel intensive heat generated from 4K 60FPS gaming from the bottom to the top via a huge 140mm fan, but the Series S doesn't have that problem.
