Doom creator adds new levels in free Sigil expansion

| Dec 10, 2018 5:38 PM CST

To celebrate Doom's 25 anniversary, John Romero is releasing a spiritual successor to the original's fourth chapter.

Doom creator adds new levels in free Sigil expansion

1993's demon-slaying shooter Doom is getting a big new mod from one of the original creators. Hand-crafted by Romero himself, Sigil is a new free mod that expands the old-school bloodbath FPS with nine new singleplayer levels and nine multiplayer maps. Slated for release in mid-February 2019, the "megawad" directly continues Doom's story arc and carries the series forward (unofficially, of course) by taking players back to a monster-infested hell.

"After killing the Spiderdemon at the end of E4M8 (Unto the Cruel), your next stop is Earth - you must save it from hellspawn that is causing unimaginable carnage," Romero said on the announcement page. "But Baphomet glitched the final teleporter with his hidden sigil whose eldritch power brings you to even darker shores of Hell. You fight through this stygian pocket of evil to confront the ultimate harbingers of Satan, then finally return to become Earth's savior. In summary, rip and tear!"

New Monster Hunter: World expansion Iceborne announced

| Dec 10, 2018 4:22 PM CST

Capcom today announced Iceborne, a huge new expansion for its wildly successful Monster Hunter: World online game.

New Monster Hunter: World expansion Iceborne announced

Like any major service game, Monster Hunter: World has evolved with a ton of free content updates to engage players. Funded by microtransaction earnings, Capcom has consistently rolled out new activities and events for players...but now it's time for a major content drop. Introducing Iceborne, Monster Hunter: World's new premium expansion slated for Autumn 2019 on PS4 and Xbox One.

Iceborne promises to be a "massive expansion" that adds new monsters (and some old beasties like the Nargacuga), fresh regions and environments to explore, new hunter attacks, an expanded quest ranking, and lots more--probably new weapons and styles to boot. Exact details remain unknown but we know it's coming in Fall 2019 and that it'll be pretty big.

Witcher 3's Geralt comes to Monster Hunter: World

| Dec 10, 2018 2:59 PM CST

In a surprise announcement, CD Projekt RED will infuse its RPG storytelling prowess into Capcom's monumentally successful Monster Hunter: World online game.

Witcher 3's Geralt comes to Monster Hunter: World

Geralt of Rivia is coming to Monster Hunter: World as part of an ambitious crossover event, Capcom today announced. The Butcher of Blaviken isn't the only thing coming to the Monster Hunter universe: he'll bring CDPR's memorable quests to the fold as well, alongside a horde of beasties like leshens, nightwraiths, and more.

Geralt will bring his sword-and-sorcery blademaster skills to the primal Monster Hunter series, and Doug Cockle is back to voice the gruff mercenary. This apparently isn't a cheap crossover event, but instead something both Capcom and CDPR took quite seriously.

Obsidian's The Outer Worlds won't have microtransactions

| Dec 10, 2018 11:25 AM CST

Despite being published by Take-Two Interactive, a company that makes millions from microtransactions, Obsidian's new RPG won't be monetized via engagement avenues.

Obsidian's The Outer Worlds won't have microtransactions

Today's gaming landscape is dominated by live service games that rake in considerable cash--so much so that it's actually surprising when a game doesn't have them. Thankfully Obsidian's new sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds is a singleplayer-only, story-driven experience without any online multiplayer. So it makes sense the game won't be monetized in the typical way with microtransactions, lootboxes, and skins (a surprising contrast to Bethesda's online-only Fallout 76).

The Outer Worlds lead director Tim Cain confirmed that the dreaded in-game purchases won't be in the game. Instead the RPG will roll back to the olden days of full game sales and, you know, actually making a quality release that drives revenue. "There are no microtransactions in the game. You buy it once and then enjoy it forever," Cain told GameStar.

Concerns about Super Smash Bros. UItimates 'Spirits Mode'

| Dec 10, 2018 4:00 AM CST

After spending some time playing the Adventure Mode in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, concerns have become more than apparent with the length of mode and the monotony of it.

Concerns about Super Smash Bros. UItimates 'Spirits Mode'

Most players that have picked up Super Smash Bros. Ultimate have tried the Adventure Mode by now. When first jumping into it I can say I was running off the hype of finally having having my hands-on Ultimate, but after spending a decent amount of time playing the mode and still not having all of the fighters yet, I feel is a issue that I'm not alone in facing. So after spending around 15 hours in the mode, I had a feeling of unsuspected monotony coming forth, I wished that already had all of the fighters when really I still had quite a long way to go unlock them. Eventually I came to the conclusion that I wished that the Adventure Mode was much shorter or at least that I had access to many more characters in a shorter period of time.

Many owners of Ultimate have chosen to use a few tricks to unlock each of the fighters instead of natively doing it through the story. Professional Super Smash Bros. player and the best player in the world for Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U released the above video showcasing how to unlock all the fighters without completing the storyline. So it seems the community is divided on this topic and for good reason, I can honestly say that despite the repetitiveness of Adventure Mode I will still be finishing the campaign, and I also still really enjoy the whole idea of Spirits and the customizations that they bring.

RTS title 'Conan Unconquered' announced for PC on Steam

The above video has been released onto publisher Funcom's YouTube Channel and features a cinematic experience that coincides with the titles Steam listing gameplay screenshots. According to the description found on the Steam listing, Conan Unconquered is the first strategy game set in the barbaric world of Conan the Barbarian.

Players that decide to jump into the world of Conan the Barbarian will be defending against the "savage hordes of Hyboria". Interestingly enough, Conan Unconquered offers a truly unique experience to the real-time strategy genre of games, players have the option of enjoying the title through a singleplayer experience but also can play co-op. When choosing to play co-op with a friend, both players will be able to construct new buildings, generate units and everything that a player can do in single-player mode. As a big real-time strategy fan, I can say that I'm very excited at what Petroglyph has in store for us. Conan Unconquered is planned for release during Q2 of 2019. For more information regarding the title visit the official Steam listing here. Within the entirety of this post you will find a more detailed description of the coming game.

Kingdom Hearts III - Opening Cinematic ft Skrillex & More

| Dec 10, 2018 2:00 AM CST

The build up to the release of Kingdom Hearts III has truly been epic, we have been blasted by trailers from Square Enix and now we have been blessed with yet another one.

Kingdom Hearts III - Opening Cinematic ft Skrillex & More

The above video is the first of three videos trailers that we are going to be gifted with, the first of which shows us scenes and characters from Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep, Chain of Memories, 358/2 Days, Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. We see Xehanort playing on a chess board with each of the pieces representing characters, this is a reference to the first trailer of Kingdom Hearts III where we see a young Eraqus playing chess with a young Xehanort.

If you haven't seen the other trailers for Kingdom Hearts III, I'd definitely check out the Tangled World trailer and the Winnie the Pooh trailer. Kingdom Hearts III is planned for release on January 29, 2019. For more information, check out the Kingdom Hearts III website here.

Smash Bros. Ultimate 1st DLC fighter: Persona 5's 'Joker'

| Dec 10, 2018 1:00 AM CST

We have now passed the release date of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and surprisingly we have already learned who the first DLC character is. Introducing Persona 5's main protagonist, The Joker.

Smash Bros. Ultimate 1st DLC fighter: Persona 5's 'Joker'

The reveal has been sourced from IGN and we have further description from Nintendo America President Reggie Fils-Aime. Fils-Aime told IGN that the reveal of The Joker is a representation of the diverse characters that will be featured throughout the DLC pack. "It's emblematic of the approach that Mr. Sakurai and the team are taking with the DLC. He wants characters that are unique, different, to bring them into the Smash Bros. environment. So it's going to be tremendously exciting."

Since The Joker was a complete surprise for everyone, we should expect the same level of surprise for the other DLC characters that are apart of the pack. This means I personally don't think that we will see characters that have been sought over by the community, examples include: Sora, Waluigi and Banjo-Kazooie. I think each of the characters that are apart of the DLC pack are going to be characters none of us have called, Sakurai being the "driver in really thinking about what type of character coming into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate would bring just a whole different level of fun and enjoyment for the player. That's been the approach. That's the thinking." For more information regarding the Fighters Pass, check out the official Smash Ultimate website listing for it here.

Doom dev John Romero to reveal new FPS tomorrow

| Dec 9, 2018 7:51 PM CST

John Romero, the designer behind FPS titan Doom, should reveal his next big shooter quite soon.

Doom dev John Romero to reveal new FPS tomorrow

Romero Games, the Doom grandfather's new game dev studio, has been working on a shooter since 2014--actually the team is working on two games for release on multiple platforms. According to an update on the studio's website, a new project will be formally unveiled tomorrow, December 10th, and it should be something big. No concrete info is actually known about the game but we have a vague "Prepare for 5" teaser.

It's possible the game could be an amalgamation of Romero's Blackroom FPS announced in 2016. Blackroom initially had a Kickstarter fundraiser to help development, but Romero cancelled it the same year, saying he'd return to the idea at a later date.

Far Cry: New Dawn is a lush take on post-apocalyptic worlds

| Dec 9, 2018 4:04 PM CST

Far Cry: New Dawn uses a novel concept called "superbloom" to create a very colorful and vibrant post-apocalyptic world.

Far Cry: New Dawn is a lush take on post-apocalyptic worlds

As we predicted, the latest Far Cry game is built on the bones of Far Cry 5, but the same way flora will grow from the remains of life, so too does New Dawn grow from the husk of irradiated Hope County, Montana. For its new game Ubisoft took a unique spin on atomic catastrophe. Rather than focusing on nuclear winter with its cold and broken world as most games do, Far Cry: New Dawn introduces the concept of nuclear spring. You may have wondered why Hope County looks so alive and verdant after a nuclear apocalypse. Ubisoft has the answer: something called "superbloom".

The nukes knocked weather cycles off-kilter and essentially the world responded by terraforming itself. Thanks to superbloom, Hope County has been transformed into a lush playground after 17 years of metamorphosis with sand dunes to vault off of in 4-wheelers, strangely mutated creatures, and exotic flora. While it's technically a sequel to Far Cry 5 because it treads old ground, it's more of a standalone type of spin-off with new characters and a fresh story.

Black Ops 4 gets $30 multiplayer-only option on PC

| Dec 9, 2018 2:39 PM CST

Only play Call of Duty for multiplayer? Activision has just made it easier and cheaper to buy into Black Ops 4 on PC.

Black Ops 4 gets $30 multiplayer-only option on PC

Having already shaved off singleplayer campaign, Black Ops 4 is already pretty lean and sees Activision focusing strongly on engagement monetization through online modes. But Activision wants to incentivize the game's microtransaction-driven multiplayer even farther with a brand new $30 option on PC.

The SKU is called the Black Ops 4 Battle Edition, and cuts out the story-based Zombies mode in favor of full-on multiplayer action. The Battle Edition is currently exclusive to Battle.net (for good reason as consoles have a wider install base) and will go up to $39.99 following January 6. Players can upgrade from the Battle Edition to the full Standard Edition at any time.

Mortal Kombat XI announced, coming April 2019

| Dec 9, 2018 12:21 AM CST

Mortal Kombat is back and it's bloodier than ever.

Mortal Kombat XI announced, coming April 2019

It was no surprise that NetherRealm was working on Mortal Kombat XI, but its announcement at The Game Awards 2018 was still pretty impressive. The series is still going strong after 25 years of wanton carnage, and the latest chapter sports two halves of the fighter coin: a massively customizable character creator aimed at engaging online players, and a new cinematic campaign that furthers the series' lore and unfolding saga. Other than that, details are pretty light, and NetherRealm will show off more content during a big reveal showcase in January.

"It's exciting to finally announce Mortal Kombat 11 and showcase what the team has been working on," said Ed Boon. "Our Custom Character Variation System opens up an infinite amount of options for players to personalize their favorite fighters. We can't wait until January when we'll be showing more of the game."

How Obsidian's new RPG The Outer Worlds channels Fallout

| Dec 8, 2018 10:16 PM CST

Obsidian's new sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds borrows quite a bit from previous Fallout games, which is to be expected since the series' original creators are at the helm.

How Obsidian's new RPG The Outer Worlds channels Fallout

The Outer Worlds is kind of like a futuristic Fallout game that could take place in another dimension, Rick and Morty style. In 2017 we were told the project would be Obsidian's answer to Fallout, and that original creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky were piecing together a new IP. This turned out to be true, but old-school Fallout fans will feel right at home with the game, new IP or not. Closed-doors demos reveal the planet-hopping shooter carries the torch of its predecessors in a few key ways.

First off, The Outer Worlds features some obvious staples like character stats (it's like Fallout's S.P.E.C.I.A.L. but with its own acronym). Skills, of course, are also in, and players will be able to sneak and raise their prowess in combat. Every time you level a skill by increments of 20 you're given a perk, up until 100, meaning 5 perks per skill.

Obsidian's new RPG The Outer Worlds was built from scratch

| Dec 8, 2018 7:23 PM CST

Obsidian's new RPG The Outer Worlds might have parallels with New Vegas, but the Unreal Engine-powered game was built from scratch.

Obsidian's new RPG The Outer Worlds was built from scratch

With its sci-fi flair, story-driven singleplayer focus, FPS combat, meaningful dialog choices, and quirky companions, The Outer Worlds may end up filling the void left by Fallout 76's critical failure. After all, Obsidian's new game is being led by Fallout creators Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarsky (as we reported back in 2017), two of the main driving forces of old-school RPGs. But this won't be a post-apocalyptic affair; instead it's a purely sci-fi jaunt through the cosmos, done Obsidian-style. To make their vision come to life, Boyarsky and Cain led Obsidian to do what they do best: building IPs from the ground up.

In a recent interview with GameSpot, both Cain and Boyarsky give insight on the process. The duo are more directors of the project and were given complete creative control by Obsidian and the Private Division label that's publishing the game. As a result, the team was able to put things in The Outer Worlds that really aren't found anywhere else.

Dragon Age 4 is BioWare's 'most epic quest ever'

| Dec 8, 2018 4:41 PM CST

BioWare is taking its new Dragon Age project very, very seriously.

Dragon Age 4 is BioWare's 'most epic quest ever'

When BioWare announced its new game Anthem would be a live-service game akin to Destiny, everyone (including me) thought one thing: the RPG-maker is diverting from key franchises like Dragon Age and Mass Effect to help EA chase microtransaction cash. It's true that Anthem is a big turning point for BioWare, but the devs are returning back to their role-playing roots in a big new way, and plan to use the beloved Dragon Age fantasy series as the pathway to that victory.

We've known BioWare was making a new Dragon Age game for a while now, but its focus remained unclear. We knew it'd probably be a mainline sequel, but would it merge online content in a weird new way? At The Game Awards 2018 we got our first glimpse at Dragon Age 4, a new project that heralds the triumphant return of the series with a elvish-focused storyline that should directly follow Inquisition's Trespasser DLC. But this announcement is much more exciting than just another Dragon Age game: it shows BioWare wants to redefine its RPGs in a big new way.

Dragon Age 4 teased with elvish Dread Wolf lore

| Dec 8, 2018 3:44 PM CST

BioWare finally reveals key info about its new Dragon Age game, which should be a mainline sequel set directly following Inquisition's Trespasser DLC.

Dragon Age 4 teased with elvish Dread Wolf lore

We've known about the next Dragon Age game since it was teased in 2016 with a concept art book adorned with a cryptic wolf's head. Now that wolf makes a lot more sense. As sources told Venture Beat, BioWare finally confirmed a new Dragon Age game with a short teaser at The Game Awards 2018.

The footage gives important clues on the game's major focus; with the tagline "The Dread Wolf Rises," it's clear the game is set around Fen'Harel, the Elvish Dread Wolf, and appears to pick off directly after Dragon Age: Inquisition's Trespasser content.

RAGE 2 likely exclusive to Bethesda.net on PC

| Dec 7, 2018 2:36 PM CST

In a move that shouldn't surprise anyone, RAGE 2 probably won't be coming to Steam and stay exclusive to Bethesda's new online storefront.

RAGE 2 likely exclusive to Bethesda.net on PC

According to pre-order info, the colorful post-apocalyptic shooter RAGE 2 is likely to be locked to Bethesda.net on PC. The listings don't offer Steam as a platform of choice, which makes total sense given the current state of the industry.

When Bethesda.net was announced back in 2016, I saw how the launcher could eventually evolve into an online framework that not only ties its games together, but sells them exclusively.

Far Cry: New Dawn announced, coming February 15

| Dec 7, 2018 1:36 PM CST

Ubisoft announces a new colorful post-apocalyptic Far Cry game at The Game Awards 2018.

Far Cry: New Dawn announced, coming February 15

As we predicted, Far Cry: New Dawn is a spin-off that has emphasis on co-operative play with a friend. The game itself is built around engagement and seems to merge multiplayer sentiments with singleplayer storytelling, pitting players in a rat race of survival with FPS action and allowing base fortification and mat hunting. The shooter won't have total multiplayer, however, and is restricted to 1-2 players.

New Dawn takes place 17 years after Far Cry 5's in a post-nuclear Hope County, and introduces two new nefarious villains: the twins Lou and Mickey who lead a vicious roving gang called The Highwaymen. The game looks to borrow FPS mechanics from Far Cry 5 and use spruced up assets from the previous game, all while throwing players in a playground of sorts built around live-style gaming.

CS: Global Offensive is free-to-play with battle royale mode

| Dec 7, 2018 3:00 AM CST

Valve has decided to make their title Counter-Strike: Global Offensive completely free-to-play and to compliment this recent announce the developer has brought Battle Royale to CS:GO.

CS: Global Offensive is free-to-play with battle royale mode

Diving into the description for Danger Zone, players will be joining a solo match will only be in a lobby with a total of 16 players. Due to this small amount of players, matches are only expected to last around 10 minutes but will incorporate all aspects of a typical battle royale experience.

For those Counter Strike players that are wondering if guns and weapon damage will be the same as they are in normal Counter-Strike games, don't stress, all weapon damage is the same. "However, since Danger Zone players can have up to 120HP, they may survive encounters that would otherwise be deadly." Devil May Cry 5 trailer leaked, Xbox One demo planned Dec 7

At the time of writing this we are only a couple hours out from the official start of The Game Awards and news has surfaced regarding Capcom's title Devil May Cry 5. An exclusive Xbox One demo?

Devil May Cry 5 trailer leaked, Xbox One demo planned Dec 7

Just ahead of the official beginning livestream for The Game Awards, Xbox Portugal accidentally released a new trailer for Capcoms Devil May Cry 5. The trailer was originally planned to be aired during The Game Awards and showcased brand new gameplay footage to fans, giving viewers a new look at what to expect from next years title.

Of course the trailer has now been removed, but that doesn't mean people haven't already grabbed the new information from it. From the trailer screenshots were taken, and probably most importantly it was revealed that Xbox One owners would get an exclusive opportunity to get hands-on with Devil May Cry 5 through a demo planned to be released on December 7th. It was also discovered that the Bloody Palace mode which has been featured in previous games will arrive for new Devil May Cry game sometime in April of 2019. Devil May Cry 5 will release for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on March 8, 2019.
