Switch Online may get SNES games and beyond
In lieu of new retro consoles, Nintendo could use Switch Online as a new subscription-based Virtual Console that offers NES, SNES, and eventually even Nintendo 64 games.
Nintendo's latest Switch handheld-console hybrid has no Virtual Console presence, a digital shop that sells older retro games on the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS for anywhere from $5 to $10. The Switch does have classic games like NeoGeo and SEGA games for $7.99 a pop, but beloved old-school Nintendo games are missing in piecemeal sales. Rather than take the traditional VC path, Nintendo's retro gaming trajectory is forked: on one half it sells the NES and SNES Classic Editions that come with pre-loaded games, and on the other is the paid Switch Online subscription service that offers access to a growing pool of NES games.
Eventually Switch Online will be the only avenue for retro gaming on the hybrid system. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime confirms the NES and SNES mini-consoles are being retired after 2018, and Switch Online will be the main portal for Switch classic gaming.

Why Red Dead Redemption 2 shouldn't be on Switch
Not every game should come to Nintendo's Switch platform, especially Rockstar's biggest game yet.
In a recent interview with Forbes, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime talked about the possibility of RDR2 on the Switch. Fils-Aime said he'd love to see Red Dead Redemption 2 on the Switch, and one of the main reasons it's not on the system is because it was in dev before the Switch itself. This prompted lots of articles divulging somewhat misleading info that RDR2 could've come to the Switch in the first place. But it's very likely the game was never planned for a Switch release. Bringing the Western to the limited handheld-console would be quite an undertaking, so much that it really just doesn't fit the system (both technically and literally).
There's many reasons why big games like Red Dead Redemption 2 shouldn't come to the Switch, but for clarification's sake we'll be talking about why Rockstar likely won't adapt their cowboy adventure to the platform. Let me preface this by saying this is an opinion-style article based around what I know about Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive's business model, and I'm not knocking the Nintendo Switch. Many games have come to the system--and many more will follow--but not every AAA title has a place on the handheld combo.

Survival instinct questioned in new Left Alive trailer
In the lastest 'Left Alive' trailer released by Square Enix, players are posed a multitude of questions regarding the choices they will be forced to make to ultimately make way for their own survival.
From the above trailer, Left Alive players will have some very hard decisions to make. These decisions will range in the form of advancing on enemies strategically or forcefully, to standing in the way of civilian life to protect them. Each vital decision made has a plethora of potential outcomes that will cause a butterfly effect throughout the rest of the game.
Left Alive will feature three main protagonists, each of these characters will come with their own story, missions and routes of survival techniques. This means that when playing as character A and moving forward through a specifically forced 'choice point', when coming across the same point and playing as character B, you may not have the same option as you previously choose. Left Alive is planned for release on March 5th and will be arriving on the PS4 and PC. For more information regarding the title, visit the official Left Alive website here.

The Conan Unconquered experience is truly 'unconquerable'
Yesterday we saw the announcement of 'Conan Unconquered', a new real-time strategy game that is being developed by the veterans at Petroglyph Games and published by Funcom. Both developers and publishers have commented on the recent announcement.
In a recent press release, we have comments from both Funcom CEO, Rui Casais and also Petroglyph CEO, Chuck Kroegel. Casais explains that him and his team are enjoying working with the team at Petroglyph, and that Casais feels as if that love is reciprocated back towards their company mutually. As a bi-product of this mutual connection, both companies believe this "team effort in every sense" will be what makes Conan Unconquered a "exciting game that continues to get better every day."
In final, Petroglyph CEO Chuck Kroegel has said that "Partnering with Funcom has truly made this Conan game experience unconquerable!" If you are a fan of strategy games and are curious about what a strategy game could offer you in the universe of Conan the Barbarian, a further description on Conan Unconquered can be found here. Conan Unconquered will be available in Q2 of 2019. A Steam listing for the title can be found here.

Darksiders III - Accolades Trailer released
THQ Nordic and Gunfire Games have decided to release another trailer regarding the success of Darksiders III. The new trailer is an Accolades Trailer and details some quotes from media sources talking about Darksiders III.
The Accolades Trailer contains quotes from numerous gaming reviewing sources, we can see quotes from JeuxVideo, God Is A Greek, GameInformer, PC Games, GamerSky and more. The trailer mixes these quotes into the background of some epic action we see from Fury taking down a range of unqiue enemies.
For those that don't know the story of Darksiders III, players that decide to pick up the title will embark on an epic hack-slash adventure with Fury at the reins of your destruction. Fury is a member of the Four Horseman and is sent on a quest to take down the Seven Deadly Sins to restore order and balance to the world of good and evil and prove her superiority as the strongest of the horseman. Since Fury is a mage her form changes throughout the game depending on how far the player progresses, this aspect also coincides with the her evolving weaponry, mechanics and overall presence within the game. Darksiders III is currently available on Xbox One, PS4 and PC. For information regarding the games coming DLC's, check out my story on the two that are currently planned here.

NierR: Automata - Game of the YoRHa Edition details soon
There is a new edition coming out for Square Enix and Platinum Games' NieR: Automata, and a teaser regarding the details of said edition has surfaced from the original writer, Yoko Taro.
The teaser is sourced from the NieR Game Twitter account where Yoko Taro took to the stage with a special announcement for the fans. The announcement says that Square Enix has asked Yoko Taro to comment about the coming Game of the YoRHa Edition, instead the writer gave us a fable regarding the meaning of nothing and how it can be applied to life.
Taro gives us the three release dates of NieR: Automata's release in their specific regions, he then lays out these dates into whole numbers and then adds them together to get a final number. He then proceeds to create two mediums by drawing two lines down the middle of the number and then subtracting the second number from the first. The equation is like this: 20170223 (2017/02/23) + 20170307 + (2017/03/07) + 20170310 (2017/03/10) = 60510840. This number is then divided by the lines 6051|0840 and then 0840 is subtracted from 6051, resulting in 5211.

China is not #1: bans Fortnite, PUBG, and other games
China has just struck down its ban hammer on a bunch of the most popular games in the world, with heavy hitters like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds being banned in the country over "promoting incorrect values".
What exactly is "incorrect values" in the eyes of China? That would be blood and gore, and the depiction of female characters in games. Fortnite and PUBG weren't the only two hit, but they were totally banned in the country. Other games including Overwatch, Diablo, World of Warcraft and League of Legends have been told they need "correction action" in China if they want to stay unbanned.
There were 20 games that were put under the microscope by the Chinese government's new Online Ethics Review Committee, and out of the gate 9 of them failed and were ultimately banned. PUBG and H1Z1 were criticized for their use of blood and gore, but the banning of Fortnite is a mystery as there is no blood or gore in Epic Games' smash hit battle royale game.

Overwatch gets into the festive spirit with its new update
Blizzard is once again getting into the festive spirit with a new update for Overwatch that arrives as the Winter Wonderland event, providing new skins, emotes, and more for the game to celebrate all things Christmas. Check out the trailer below:
The developer has been showing off individual Overwatch characters and their new festive outfits on social media over the last few days ahead of the Winter Wonderland update, but now we have a full detailed listing of what to expect. Roadhog receives an aweseome-looking Rudolph outfit for Christmas play in Overwatch, while Santa Claus costumes are provided for Mei (she looks SO good with it on) as well as Torbjorn.
Blizzard has thrown in two new brawls into Overwatch's new Winter Wonderland update, with the first dubbed 'Yeti Hunter'. In this mode, a team of Mei players will have to chase a Winston player who features the Yeti Skin festive outfit. Mei is featured in the second brawl which is called 'Snowball Offensive' that sees Mei sporting a modified Endothermic Blaster that launches snowballs that are painful one-hit KOs.

Nintendo optimistic on 20 million Switch sales target
Nintendo expects to sell 20 million Switch consoles by March 2019, but it's still well short of that goal. The critical Black Friday and Christmas periods could push the games-maker near or beyond its goal.
As of September 30, Nintendo is almost 15 million units shy of its big 20 million console sales target. Switch hardware sales for the first two quarters of Fiscal Year 2018 sit at 5.1 million, leaving 14.9 million units to be sold in the remaining six-month period up until March 31, 2019. This may sound daunting, but Nintendo is igniting the fuse for the industry's yearly sales bomb: the holiday season.
Black Friday and holiday season are traditionally Nintendo's most important periods throughout the year when it comes to hardware sales, meaning its Q3 timeframes see big sales spikes (Nintendo sold over 7 million Switch consoles in Q3'17). Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime says this historical surge gives executives confidence that the 20 million target will be met.

Bethesda celebrates 25 years of Doom's demon-slaying havoc
Doom is now 25 (feel old yet?) and id Software is promising big things for 2019.
The Doom franchise helped pioneer the shooter genre and transform the genre into a titan of the industry, so it's only prudent Bethesda looks back on its 25-year legacy of ripping and tearing. The publisher and id put together a bloody and rather badass look at the FPS' storied history, from running on smartwatches, calculators, and even being controlled by toasters to an enthralling look at the new Doom Eternal.
Speaking of Doom Eternal, 2019 should be a big year for the series as it makes a triumphant hellspawn-slaying comeback. The new shooter takes place on a demon-infested Earth and sports all-new Doomslayer abilities like wall-climbing, dashing, a melee attack, and a two-handed hellblade to slice and dice monsters. Doom Eternal's macabre mayhem is being crafted on the next-gen id Tech 7 engine, which offers improved visuals, physics, and a strong heart-pumping 60FPS.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 is all about being a space pirate
Ubisoft wants to make you feel like a space pirate in it's massive new online sci-fantasy game Beyond Good and Evil 2.
From what I've seen so far Beyond Good and Evil 2 looks to be Ubisoft's biggest game to date. Its scope is incredibly ambitious and aims to take on a GTA Online-meets-No-Man's-Sky type of feel with online multiplayer elements thrown in for good measure. Cities, planets, and even whole systems are scaled into massively explorable areas filled with loot, dogfighting carnage, action-based combat, and story missions--all wrapped in a specific sci-fantasy style. It's undoubtedly going to be a monumental undertaking to achieve this grand vision, but Ubisoft is doing their best to make you feel like a space pirate.
To explain what this actually means, Ubisoft released a big 26-minute Beyond Good and Evil 2 gameplay demo with lots of juicy tidbits. The game has a custom character creator and each space pirate captain has some nifty tech to use in combat or exploration: an old-school-meets-high-tech gun, a sword, and a jetpack to zoom around across the vertical areas. You also get a fancy spyglass to scan your environments for treasures and your enemies for weaknesses, adding a nice tactical flair to the mix.

Fallout 76 respecs aren't retroactive
Fallout 76 players can now re-spec SPECIAL points, but there's a catch: it's not retroactive.
As per new patch notes, Fallout 76's respeccing only applies to new level ups past level 50. So if you're level 100 you won't get to respec 50 times; instead you'll have to level up to 101 and then you'll only get one respec point. Respeccing a SPECIAL point also takes away the ability to select a new perk card.

25-years of DOOM celebrated with DOOM update for Switch
If you didn't know by now, Bethesda and id Software are celebrating 25 years of DOOM and apart of the celebration, DOOM for the Nintendo Switch developer, Panic Button is bringing a new patch to the handheld console version.
Panic Button has taken care of several AAA titles arriving on the Nintendo Switch, they formulated the ports for; Wolfenstein II, Rocket League and the recently released Warframe. In celebration of the lifetime of DOOM, Panic Button has announced that they will be releasing a new patch for the Nintendo Switch verison of the game.
The update will contain performance increases, ability to add recently played with players to your friends list and in-game video capture. Its awesome to see Panic Button show some love towards DOOM to coincide with its 25th year anniversary, especially considering those players of DOOM on the Switch may not be the biggest majority of DOOM players. DOOM is currently available on the Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. For more information regarding DOOM, visit the official website for it here.

Smash Bros. Ultimate director discusses 3rd-party characters
Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director, Masahiro Sakurai, has given details regarding the process of which Nintendo go through to get third-party characters into the Smash Bros. series.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai has sat down with EDGE to dive into the process of which Nintendo and himself, go through to include third-party characters in the Smash Bros. series. Sakurai says that the process is sometimes met with a physical meeting with the characters creator and lots of communication with Nintendo. "There are cases where I will meet with the original creators myself once or twice, but in general communication is carried out through Nintendo."
Sakurai further details that no matter what third-party character is chosen they are always developed in the Smash Bros. style first. "Character movements are also developed with a Smash Bros. style first. The end result from this is then passed on for review by the other companies, so they can point out any problems for us to fix." The third-party companies will then point out "differences in what is regarded as acceptable in terms of Smash Bros. and in terms of the original series, in the end we try to find something that both sides will be happy with." A recent example of a surprise third-party character coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is Persona 5's 'Joker', more on that story here.

Smash Bros. UItimate is fastest-selling Switch game so far
The UK sales charts for the week ending on December 8th are in and Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has taken 1st place as the best seller.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate released on December 7th and according to GamesIndustry.biz, Ultimate has become the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch game released so far on the platform. The sales of Ultimate have beaten that of Pokemon: Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee and have dominated the launch sales of Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U by a staggering 302% . When comparing the launch sales for the Wii rendition of Smash Bros. (Brawl), Ultimate has managed a 62.5% increase in sales.
It should be noted that these sales do not include digital downloads and only have accounted for physical sales. Looking towards the UK sales charts now, Ultimate has knocked FIFA 19 down to third place from 1st, while Red Dead Redemption 2 still holds steady at 2nd place. According to GamesIndustry.biz, retailers have told the website that over the course of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the sales causes Nintendo to sell 200,000 Nintendo Switch consoles, which no doubt added to the success of Super Smash Bros. UItimate.

90s hit 'Blood' is being remastered by Nightdive Studios
Blood was one of my favorite games of the 90s so the news that Atari and Nightdive Studios are remastering the 90s classic brings warmth to my heart, with Atari saying that there will be more news on the game "in the coming weeks".
Nightdive Studios has said that it is going to be providing a "better user experience for contemporary atudiences", so expect more of a polish to bring the game up to 2019 standards, versus a full remake. Nightdive will be providing both DirectX and Vulkan API support for the Blood remastered release, with improved modern netcode and Steamworks integration for the modding community.
Blood will be available on both Steam and GOG in a 'One Whole Unit' package that will pack both the game and its expansions.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 is Ubisoft's biggest game yet
Beyond Good and Evil 2 looks incredibly ambitious, and should be a dream game for Ubisoft.
Ubisoft's business model focuses heavily on engagement, and all of its games have live services. Beyond Good and Evil 2 will be no exception: everything we've seen so far shows it was built from the ground up as a online live service game with tons of monetization opportunities and engagement hooks. The sci-fi RPG's galactic scope rivals some of the biggest names in the industry and looks to be a cross between No Man's Sky's exploration and feel with Grand Theft Auto's open-ended chaos, all wrapped together with a unique visual style. After all, Ubisoft describes it as a "seamless online playground" that's designed to be explored alone or with friends.
It's been a while since we saw Beyond Good and Evil 2 in action--it was formally announced at E3 2017 with an amazing trailer--the devs showed off some new pre-alpha gameplay to whet our appetites. No release date was confirmed (maybe expect a 2019 or 2020 release) but we did get some interesting tidbits, including ship augments and a true idea of just how big the game is.

Doom creator adds new levels in free Sigil expansion
To celebrate Doom's 25 anniversary, John Romero is releasing a spiritual successor to the original's fourth chapter.
1993's demon-slaying shooter Doom is getting a big new mod from one of the original creators. Hand-crafted by Romero himself, Sigil is a new free mod that expands the old-school bloodbath FPS with nine new singleplayer levels and nine multiplayer maps. Slated for release in mid-February 2019, the "megawad" directly continues Doom's story arc and carries the series forward (unofficially, of course) by taking players back to a monster-infested hell.
"After killing the Spiderdemon at the end of E4M8 (Unto the Cruel), your next stop is Earth - you must save it from hellspawn that is causing unimaginable carnage," Romero said on the announcement page. "But Baphomet glitched the final teleporter with his hidden sigil whose eldritch power brings you to even darker shores of Hell. You fight through this stygian pocket of evil to confront the ultimate harbingers of Satan, then finally return to become Earth's savior. In summary, rip and tear!"
