Sony will have 'PS4 Pro Enhanced' sticker on boxes

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 8, 2016 11:25 PM CDT

Sony is going to make it very easy to know which games are enhanced for the new PlayStation 4 Pro, with the company using a "PS4 Pro Enhanced" sticker or icon on the PS4 packaging.

Sony says: "You can check PlayStation Store for games that take advantage of PS4 Pro specific features, or look for the PS4 Pro Enhanced icon on software packaging. PS4 Pro Enhanced features vary by game. Select titles may have enhanced visuals, frame rate, HDR 10 support, or increases in resolution".

Some of the new games that are enhanced for the new PS4 Pro include Battlefield 1, Horizon Zero Dawn, Elder Scrolls Online, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Watch Dogs 2, Mass Effect Andromeda, and more.

Elder Scrolls Online will run at full 4K on PS4 Pro

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 8, 2016 9:27 PM CDT

There will be a few games launching for the PlayStation 4 Pro that will be running in their native 4K resolution, while some other games like Horizon Zero Dawn that will get close to, but not quite 4K.

Elder Scrolls Online will be running on the PS4 Pro at its native 4K resolution, with Bethesda teasing there will be "increased graphical fidelity" on the PS4 Pro for ESO.

Bethesda added: "When the PlayStation 4 Pro launches on 10th November 2016, The Elder Scrolls Online will be immediately playable in native 4K resolution, whether purchased new, or with existing game discs. Since the game was originally designed for a wide range of PC specifications, ZeniMax Online Studios was able to scale up the presentation alongside the scaled up power of the PlayStation 4 Pro. For players, this means that if you play The Elder Scrolls Online on the PlayStation 4 Pro with a 1080p HD television, you will experience increased graphical fidelity; if a player uses a 4K monitor, the game will automatically run in 4K".

Here's why Sony nixed PS4 Pro's 4K Blu-ray player

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 8, 2016 5:34 PM CDT

Sony's PS4 Pro is all about 4K...except when it comes to 4K Blu-rays. That's right, the PS4 Pro doesn't play 4K UHD Blu-rays. Why would Sony make such an obvious omission especially when its competitor's $299 console supports it? So it could push gamers to sign up for its digital 4K movie streaming service called ULTRA.

Here's why Sony nixed PS4 Pro's 4K Blu-ray player

In its own words, here's why Sony cut out the 4K UHD Blu-ray player from the PS4 Pro: "Our feeling is that while physical media continues to be a big part of the games business, we see a trend on video towards streaming. Certainly with our user base, it's the second biggest use case for people's time on the system so we place more emphasis on that area," Sony Interactive Entertainment President Andrew House told The Guardian.

In actuality, there's a few reasons Sony shaved of 4K UHD Blu-ray support from its new PlayStation 4 Pro. The most obvious reason you'd think is because of the cost of the Blu-ray player itself, but the reality is that the PS4 Pro already has the requisite hardware for 4K UHD video playback, which is the most expensive part.

PS4 Pro FAQ: Sony explains the new $399 4K PS4 console

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 8, 2016 4:34 PM CDT

There's been lots of confusion surrounding Sony's new 4K-ready PS4 Pro console, and in an attempt to clear things up, the Japanese console-maker has issued a massive console FAQ which you can find in its entirety below.

PS4 Pro FAQ: Sony explains the new $399 4K PS4 console

The new $399 PlayStation 4 Pro is definitely a huge improvement over the original PS4, offering an AMD Polaris-based GPU with double the power at 4.20 TFLOPs, an overclocked CPU, higher RAM bandwidth, and all kinds of embedded scaling tech. While the PS4 Pro won't have exclusive games and play all old PS4 games, the selling point is that the console will render games in up to 4K 30FPS on 4K TVs and up to native 1080p 60FPS on HDTVs, while delivering considerable performance upgrades.

On PS4 Pro, games will look and play better than they ever did on original PS4 consoles, and you won't need a 4K TV to benefit from the console.

DirectX 12 arrives for Deus Ex in beta form

Sean Ridgeley | Gaming | Sep 8, 2016 3:28 PM CDT

As promised yesterday, DirectX 12 support has arrived for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Sadly, it's in beta form only, so results are likely to not be as good as you'd hope off the bat.

To try DX12, right click on the game in Steam, navigate to Properties > Beta, then select dx12_preview and close the window. Be sure to grab the new AMD drivers and the latest NVIDIA drivers for best results.

Reports so far indicate moderate improvement or no improvement in FPS and frametimes for AMD users and worse performance for NVIDIA users. In the latter case, one hopes for an upcoming driver to better the situation.

PS4 Pro uses AMD Polaris GPU, sits below RX 470

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 8, 2016 2:00 PM CDT

Sony has confirmed that it's new $399 PlayStation 4 Pro console leverages AMD's new Polaris GPU architecture--and even reaches beyond Polaris--to enable 4K gaming, higher FPS, and more.

PS4 Pro uses AMD Polaris GPU, sits below RX 470

While we still don't know exact specifics on the PlayStation 4 Pro's GPU hardware, we do know it's based on AMD's Polaris tech and rocks 4.20 TeraFLOPs of compute power, sitting just below the Radeon RX 470. This puts the PS4 Pro's GPU at more than double the PS4's original 1.84 TFLOPs GPU that equated closely to a Radeon HD 7850 in specs. We also have reason to believe that the PS4 Pro's APU is based on the efficient 16nm FinFET node.

"Our goal with the PS4 Pro is to deliver high-fidelity graphical experiences. With that in mind, we've more than doubled the power of the GPU and adopted many new features from the AMD Polaris architecture as well as several even beyond it," PS4 Pro designer Mark Cerny said at the PlayStation Meeting event.

Radeon 16.9.1 driver optimized for Deus Ex, DOTA 2

Sean Ridgeley | Graphics Cards | Sep 8, 2016 1:31 PM CDT

AMD's Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.9.1 driver is available now, and with it comes some much appreciated game optimizations and bug fixes, as usual.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided supports DirectX 12 today from the game developer end, and with this driver, from AMD's end, too, so you should have no trouble running the game with buttery smoothness.

The other game to get some TLC is DOTA 2, which has been bestowed with a DirectX 11 CrossFire profile.

14 games have PS4 Pro support built-in so far

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 8, 2016 12:32 PM CDT

UPDATE: In addition to the 14 games listed here, the following games will also feature upgraded performance on Sony's PS4 Pro: Titanfall 2, The Last of Us Remastered, Paragon, Shadow of Mordor, Infamous Last Light, Uncharted 4 and Elder Scrolls Online. More games will be added as well.

14 games have PS4 Pro support built-in so far

There is a list of games that will have built-in support for the upgraded PlayStation 4 Pro console, with some of the biggest new games of the year making the list. These games include Battlefield 1, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Watch Dogs 2, and more.

The games that have PS4 Pro support will use the additional horsepower and 4K output for better looking games that will also run better on the PS4 Pro, so we should expect most of these games to [hopefully] run at 60FPS on 1080p HDTVs. Sadly, it's up to devs how these upgrades are applied, so not every game will run at native 1080p 60FPS on PS4 Pro. Older games will need to be updated with Forward Compatibility updates to leverage the PS4 Pro's new hardware, and Mark Cerny affirms that more older PS4 games will be supported in the future:

PS4 Pro won't play all PS4 games at 1080p 60FPS

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 8, 2016 11:53 AM CDT

Sony announced its new $399 PS4 Pro (codenamed "Neo") console yesterday, but the lack of a clear upgrade path has left many gamers scratching their heads. Will the PS4 Pro play all old PS4 games better than original PS4s or not? The answer is: maybe, if the devs allow it.

PS4 Pro won't play all PS4 games at 1080p 60FPS

Yesterday we reported that developers hold the ultimately say in how their PS4 games are upgraded on the new PS4 Pro. Old PS4 games must be patched with "Forward Compatibility" upgrades in order to play better on Sony's new PlayStation Pro hardware, but devs get to choose what performance enhancements to apply to their games. This means that all older PS4 games (and possibly newer ones) that are updated with Forward Compatibility won't hit native 1080p 60FPS by default: devs can choose frame rates, upscaling visuals, and a number of different upgrades for their titles.

"Depending on how the developer chooses to use the increased processing power, games with PS4 Pro support are able to render higher or more consistent framerates, increased environmental and character model detail, improved overall visual quality, and other related visual enhancements," Sony said in a recent PS4 Pro FAQ.

Mass Effect: Andromeda runs at 4K 30FPS on PS4 Pro

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 8, 2016 10:24 AM CDT

Even with the beefier hardware inside of the new and improved PlayStation 4 Pro, Mass Effect: Andromeda will still only be running at 30FPS, the same framerate the current PS4 will be capable of.

Fabrice Condominas is a producer on Mass Effect: Andromeda, and during an interview with GameSpot where he shared the news. The PS4 Pro might be faster than the PS4, but limiting it to 30FPS means that Mass Effect: Andromeda will look much better on the PS4 Pro compared to the PS4 thanks to being upscaled to 4K.

GameSpot did note that the version of Mass Effect: Andromeda they saw was a pre-alpha build, and that optimization made on the game between now and its release could "lead to better performance".

Sony will have 'more technical detail' on PS4 Pro soon

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 8, 2016 8:32 AM CDT

Sony is still keeping some of the more detailed technical specifications on its new PS4 Pro under wraps, but during a roundtable interview session with some of the development team on Horizon Zero Dawn, there were questions asked about the "nitty gritty" of the PS4 Pro and its performance.

Guerrilla Games' managing director Herman Hulst along with art director Jan-Bart Van Beek gave some details, but PS4 lead system architect Mark Cerny will provide a more detailed response soon. GameSpot reports that a PlayStation representative talked about Cerny's comments in the roundtable, saying that Sony will "have more technical details in the near future".

The question asked was if Horizon Zero Dawn's assets are rendered in 4K for the PS4 Pro version of the game, with Van Beek saying that it's not quite 4K, adding that it's "so close" that you might not be able to tell. He said: "It's not native 4K. It is perceptively so close that you wouldn't be able to see the difference with normal human eyes".

Apple's new Watch not available in $10,000 gold version

Apple announced their new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus smartphones alongside a new Apple Watch Series 2 wearable, with some notable upgrades over the original Watch from 2015.

The original Apple Watch was available in the 'Apple Watch Edition' which made of solid gold and cost a pretty steep $10,000 - but during the Apple event, the company didn't mention the new Watch Series 2 being made in an Apple Watch Edition. Instead, the company revealed a new ceramic-based Apple Watch Edition, but it will not be coming in gold.

Apple's new "reimagined" ceramic Apple Watch Edition starts at $1249, which is around double the cost of the Watch Series 2 which comes in stainless steel, and triple the cost of the cheapest aluminum-based Watch Series 2.

Xbox Scorpio will be the 'most powerful console ever'

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 8, 2016 2:09 AM CDT

Sony made its PS4 Pro official yesterday, after months of teasing it as the PS4 Neo, Sony's new console whimpered onto the market without a 4K Blu-ray player, and it won't be anywhere near as fast as Microsoft's upcoming Xbox Scorpio console.

Microsoft has been on the offensive since the reveal of the PS4 Pro, tweeting that its new Xbox One S console includes a 4K Blu-ray player, but now the company has reiterated that Xbox Scorpio will be the "most powerful console ever", something it claimed when unveiling Scorpio at E3 earlier this year.

Senior Director of Product Management and Planning at Xbox, Albert Penello, chatted with IGN, where he said: "I believe that the difference between what we're going to deliver with Scorpio from a performance perspective and PS4 Pro will be obvious to customers. I believe we have the best value this holiday, and I think we're going to have the most powerful box next year".

Sony's new high-end 7.1 gaming headset will cost $159

Anthony Garreffa | Audio | Sep 8, 2016 12:38 AM CDT

All of the attention at the PlayStation Meeting today was for the new and improved PS4 Pro console from Sony, which rocks 4K capabilities, faster internals, but it lacks a 4K Blu-ray player which has Microsoft trolling Sony on Twitter.

Sony also announced a new Platinum Wireless Headset for the PS4, with Sony teasing it as a "high-end gaming headset" which is made from a "premium construction and materials for extra comfort". The new Platinum Wireless Headset has positional 7.1 virtual surround sound which is powered by SIE's proprietary 3D audio technology.

There will be certain PS4 games that support 3D audio that will work on the Platinum Wireless Headset, throwing surround sound at your ears from all directions. The new headset also features multi-position, hidden noise-cancelling microphones for super-clear voice communications, and it's also compatible with the PlayStation VR headset, and mobile devices with its included 3.5mm cable.

Sony's new and improved PlayStation Camera costs $59

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 7, 2016 11:35 PM CDT

Sony's entire focus of their PlayStation Meeting was the unveiling of the new PlayStation 4 slim and PS4 Pro models, but the company also unveiled a newly designed PlayStation Camera.

The new PlayStation Camera will launch on September 15 for $59, and is required for the PlayStation VR headset, with the camera acting as a head-tracking device. The redesign has the PlayStation Camera looking much better, with a compact cylindrical form. It also includes a stand that lets you adjust the angle of the camera, too.

The new PS4 Pro hasn't been graced with a 4K Blu-ray player, with Microsoft taking a stab at Sony over the lack of 4K Blu-ray in their new console. The new PS4 Pro rocks an improved Polaris-based GPU from AMD, higher clock speeds on the 8-core CPU (based on Jaguar CPU cores from AMD), and more.

Microsoft trolls PS4 Pro's lack of a 4K Blu-ray player

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 7, 2016 9:45 PM CDT

Sony has finally announced the new PS4 Pro, after months of it being codenamed PS4 Neo (which sounds way cooler), the newer, more powerful PlayStation 4 will cost $399 when it launches on November 10.

The new PS4 Pro is faster, rocking a new Polaris-based GPU from AMD, and Sony took some time to explain the innards of its new PS4 Pro, which lacks a 4K Blu-ray player. Microsoft announced its Xbox One S console a few weeks ago, which is priced from $299 and it rocks a full 4K Blu-ray player. As soon as Sony made the announcement on the PS4 Pro, Microsoft's social media team jumped on it, tweeting out that their Xbox One S features 4K streaming and a 4K Blu-ray player.

Head of Xbox Games Marketing, Aaron Greenberg, tweeted out the specs of the PS4 Pro, saying that the upcoming Xbox Scorpio console will be faster. Xbox Scorpio rocks 6 TFLOPs of performance, while Sony's new and improved PS4 Pro is capable of just 4.2 TFLOPs of performance. The lack of a 4K Blu-ray player is a big deal, considering how important Sony's role is in the Blu-ray standard.

PS4 Pro specs: 4.2 TFLOPs, Jaguar CPU, 310W power draw

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 7, 2016 6:06 PM CDT

The specifications for Sony's new high-end PlayStation 4 Pro (codenamed "Neo") console have been revealed, confirming that the fresh system packs double the GPU power as the original PS4.

PS4 Pro specs: 4.2 TFLOPs, Jaguar CPU, 310W power draw

Sony revealed its new $399 PS4 Pro console today as part of the PlayStation Meeting event, showing off the new "hardcore" iterative system that provides a bevvy of performance boosts for PlayStation 4 games. According to an official press release, the PS4 Pro is considerably heavier (~10 lbs) and draws more power than original consoles, leveraging an AMD Radeon-based GPU clocked at 4.20 TFLOPs of power (roughly double that off PS4's original 1.84 TFLOPS) and an overclocked 8-core AMD Jaguar CPU based on x86-64 architecture. The PS4 Pro's single-chip processor is likely based on the efficient 16nm FinFET node, matching the same node of the new PS4 Slim refresh.

Since it belts out a lot more performance, the PS4 Pro consumes up to 310W in power compared to the original console's 250W draw, but the new console uses the same AC 100V 50/60Hz power supply as the base model. Sadly there's no specific frequency for the overclocked Jaguar CPU, but unverified leaks pinpoint the PS4 Pro's processor at 2.1GHz, up from the original PS4's 1.66GHz CPU speeds. Sony has also confirmed that the new 4K-ready PS4 has increased memory bandwidth in its unified 8GB of GDDR5 system memory. Although it supports 4K upscaling, the new console won't support 4K UHD Blu-ray discs.

Devs have final say on PS4 Pro's Forward Compatibility

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 7, 2016 4:56 PM CDT

Sony has just revealed its new high-end upgraded PS4 Pro model (the erstwhile PS4 Neo), which will upscale regular PS4 games to 4K resolution and provide various benefits like improved frame rate and more dynamic environments. But not all PS4 games will use the PS4 Pro's new hardware, and it looks like developers will have the ultimate say in how--and if--their games use the extra horsepower.

Devs have final say on PS4 Pro's Forward Compatibility

Sony's new PlayStation 4 Pro packs in a serious performance punch over current PS4s, rocking all the specs we expected--a GPU with double the power, a boosted CPU, and higher memory bandwidth--to enable 4K resolution upscaling and boosted FPS rates across a number of games. This means older PS4 games can be enhanced in a number of ways to provide better performance and gameplay experiences over the original PS4 console. There's a catch, though: Sony is just providing the extra hardware, and it's up to developers to decide how--and if--to use it.

"The same discs and downloads will run on both the standard model and the PS4 Pro. These games will play in multiple ways; in addition to support for the standard model, we're asking our publishing and development partners to consider how they can best support PS4 Pro on 4K TVs and also HDTV's on each and every title," Sony's Andrew House said. Notice how he explicitly said "we're asking," pretty much saying that it's entirely optional and that developers have full freedom over whether or not to leverage the console's extra hardware, and how to do so.
