TL;DR: A modder patched the leaked DLSS 5 DLL from NBA 2K 27 to run on RTX 40-series GPUs; a video shows an RTX 4090 using DLSS 5 in Control at playable speeds (about 82 FPS vs ~130 FPS), suggesting NVIDIA's RTX 50 requirement is artificial and DLSS 5 can be ported to older architectures.

The internet has been flooded with new videos and articles showing RenoDX's DLSS 5 mod working in a wide variety of DLSS 4/4.5 supported titles. But a modder by the name of Uncle Burrito has managed to get the DLSS 5 DLL to work with previous-generation RTX 40 series GPUs. The modder showcased his work in a video, running Control with DLSS 5 on an RTX 4090.

Burrito was able to get DLSS 5 to work on RTX 40 series GPUs by patching the DLSS 5 DLL file with CUDA binaries compatible with the Ada Lovelace architecture (per VideoCardz). In the video, Burrito shows that DLSS 5 works the exact same way in Control as other videos have demonstrated running the same mod and game on RTX 50 series hardware. The performance drop-off was also similar, with Burrito's RTX 4090 dropping from roughly 130 FPS down to just 82 FPS, representing a 58% reduction in performance.

Popular Now: DLSS 5 has been modded into Skyrim, and it definitely transforms character faces

This mod confirms that NVIDIA's RTX 50 series requirement for DLSS 5 is purely artificial, and if the company wanted to, it has the capability to port DLSS 5 to older architectures. It's worth taking the performance results with a pinch of salt, but at the very least, it appears the RTX 4090 can run this version of DLSS 5 at playable frame rates above 60 FPS.

The DLSS 5 DLL file that was discovered in NBA 2K 27 has now been modded into dozens of games, giving us a sneak peek at what DLSS 5's capabilities are. For the uninitiated, DLSS 5 is coming this fall and will be NVIDIA's most aggressive iteration of its renderer to date, capable of modifying lighting, shadows, and characters in-game to look less "gamified" and more lifelike. DLSS 5's capabilities are so strong that DLSS 5 has a whole new set of modifiers aimed at developers to tweak the aggressiveness of DLSS 5's input on a game's visual aesthetics.
