Grand Theft Auto V continues making money hand over fist thanks to Rockstar's massively successful engagement strategy.

GTA V was the top earning digital console game in 2017

Leviathan. Juggernaut. Cash cow. All of these terms (and more) can be used to aptly describe Grand Theft Auto V: despite releasing in 2013, the game's GTA Online multiplayer component has carried it higher and higher on the money scale. Rockstar's parent company Take-Two has seen stellar success quarter after quarter thanks to GTA Online's new content, and now GTA V sits at the top-earning digital game of 2017--beating out competitors like the massively successful Call of Duty: WWII that made over $500 million in its opening weekend alone in total game sales.

According to analyst firm SuperData's latest 2017 year in review report, GTA V is the top-earning digital game in revenue throughout last year. The game earned over half a billion dollars or $521 million, the firm reports. As of July 2017, GTA Online has earned Take-Two over $1 billion dollars in revenue.

YouTube gaming video revenues drop by 50% year-over-year

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jan 30, 2018 3:24 PM CST

The Gaming Video Content segment of the games industry, which includes streams, let's plays, and other gaming content published on platforms like YouTube and Twitch, is a maturing sector that earns billions every year. But YouTube had a big problem in 2017...

YouTube gaming video revenues drop by 50% year-over-year

Last year saw we saw big advertisers like Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Procter and Gamble, and AT&T yank advertisements from YouTube following a big content controversy: ads were playing over videos deemed racist and massively inappropriate. It didn't help that major YouTube stars like Pewdiepie were also part of the controversy. Predictably enough this exodus took a toll on YouTube's advertising revenue, which it relies on to keep the platform afloat and support content creators. SuperData notes that YouTube earned 69% of its GVC revenues from advertisements in 2017. But how badly was its Gaming Video Content hit by the move? Pretty bad.

According to analyst firm SuperData, YouTube's GVC revenue dropped by a massive 50% year-over-year in 2017, effectively meaning it earned Google half of 2016's pre-controversy revenues.

Mobile gaming earns big in 2017

Free-to-play gaming is king, and the smartphone platform reigns throughout 2017.

Mobile gaming earns big in 2017

Analyst firm SuperData just published their latest year in review report to highlight how key sectors of the games industry fared in 2017. According to the data, mobile gaming topped the free-to-play market in Asia, North America and Europe with some $51 billion in collective earnings, representing 72% of the combined revenues across mobile, free-to-play PC, and social gaming for the year. Free-to-play gaming, specifically mobile, typically top the yearly earnings charts above console gaming.

One of the more surprising metrics shows just how many people actually play F2P games around the world: SuperData notes that one in three people on the planet play on PC or mobile, and actually pull in $82 billion of the global games market, or about 89%. In fact players spent $14 billion more on mobile games in 2017 than in 2016, showing a clear rise in the popularity and the appeal of buying in-game purchases.

Microsoft re-invests in cloud gaming tech

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jan 30, 2018 10:12 AM CST

Microsoft acquires PlayFab, a "complete backend platform provider of services to build, launch and grow cloud-connected games" that ties in with the company's plans to accelerate games with Azure.

Microsoft re-invests in cloud gaming tech

Remember Microsoft's Xbox LIVE Compute platform? Remember when the company said it would accelerate the power of gaming via the cloud? Clear results didn't really materialize like Redmond had promised, but now it's doubling down on cloud-based tools in a bid to power its new gaming push. The company recently snapped up PlayFab in a bid to bolster its games-as-a-service business strategy, which Microsoft has embraced over time (most of it's third party games have GaaS elements and are monetized, not to mention Xbox LIVE which thrives on engagement).

But the acquisition isn't just to power games themselves, but also give developers a wider toolset to open new avenues for their creations. For example, Microsoft has confirmed that both Crackdown 3 and PUBG on Xbox One use/will use Azure, and we're betting both games will also use PlayFab's backend tech too.

The pirate-themed action-adventure cooperative multiplayer game which is played from the first person perspective allows for players to embark on a voyage across the seas to explore the open world.

To do this players will have to take on specific roles such as steering, hoisting sails, firing cannons and navigation. While doing all of these tasks players will notice the water effects surrounding their ships, these effects are truly incredible as the wave height and swell of the water changes over time while keeping its glistening colour.

Dragonball FighterZ blasts Steam fighting competitors

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jan 26, 2018 6:22 PM CST

Arc System Works' new Dragonball fighter is pretty popular for a fighting game insofar as concurrent player count, especially on Steam.

Dragonball FighterZ blasts Steam fighting competitors

Dragonball FighterZ is being hailed as one of the purest, most enjoyable video game adaptations of the beloved anime series to date, and it seems tons of gamers are eager to get their Ultra Instinct action on. In fact, the game is doing well on Steam where its Steam player count peaks at about 43,921. This makes it the most-played fighter in terms of concurrent players on Steam, beating out competitors like Tekken.

Gamers are getting their kamehamehas on well above other fighting games such as Tekken 7, Mortal Kombat X, and Ultra Street Fighter IV. Interestingly enough Dragonball FighterZ almost has more peak players than those three games combined on Steam.

ARK is getting a voxel-based spin-off

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jan 26, 2018 5:26 PM CST

The world of ARK: Survival Evolved is getting rendered in pixellated voxel graphics in a bid to capture some of the Minecraft audience.

ARK is getting a voxel-based spin-off

Minecraft is a gaming juggernaut that makes Microsoft money hand over fist, and it behooves competitors to take notice. While the big mover in the industry is currently battle royale games like PUBG and Epic's Fortnite, the devs of ARK have taken a different tact: the voxel sandbox survival genre.

PixARK, the new Minecraft-esque game that takes place in the ARK universe, will feature online and singleplayer content as well as crafting, base-building, survival action, and the signature dinos that can be tamed. Procedural generation means worlds will always be different and there are over 5 different biomes.

Sony patents new motion controller tech

Derek Strickland | Extended Reality (XR) | Jan 26, 2018 3:22 PM CST

Sony has filed new patents for upgraded motion controllers, likely for its PlayStation VR headset.

Sony patents new motion controller tech

The PlayStation Move controllers that Sony currently uses for its console-powered PlayStation VR headset are years old and are due for an update. Apparently Sony agrees, and has filed patents for new controllers that are quite similar to the Oculus Touch controllers used by the Rift headset.

The new PS Move (might be called something else) iteration sees a joystick added on, and a kind of knuckle strap that's seen on HTC's next-gen "Vive Knuckles" prototype controller for the Vive headset. The most interesting thing, though, is how the patent says the controllers will be tracked by the headset itself--not the PlayStation Camera sensor--which strongly indicates a new PS VR headset is in the works.

BioWare's studios focus on Anthem's development

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jan 26, 2018 1:27 PM CST

BioWare now has tunnel vision on the single most important game it's ever developed: Anthem.

BioWare's studios focus on Anthem's development

After Mass Effect: Andromeda, BioWare has a lot of proving to do in the eyes of gamers, and following the big hubbub over Battlefront II, players are somewhat wary of EA. A while ago I predicted that Anthem, BioWare's new online shooter, would be a service game with microtransactions--something that's a touchy subject as of late...and based on everything we've heard so far, it seems quite plausible. Now the expectations are all on BioWare's shoulders and the team is gearing up the game's development.

BioWare's key teams across its Edmonton and Austin branches (remember Montreal was closed after ME: Andromeda and employees were absorbed into other teams) are focusing near-exclusively on Anthem to ensure it meets the Fiscal 2019 release target, sources have told Kotaku's Jason Schreier.

Crystal Dynamics has snagged a bunch of key industry developers to help build its Avengers project.

Crystal Dynamics made 'tremendous progress' on Avengers game

Marvel's recent deal with Square Enix is a pretty big deal: the Disney-owned titan has conscripted the Japanese games-maker for a multi-year slew of games, including a new Avengers game that players can "enjoy for years to come." The game has undoubtedly been in the works for a bit, and Crystal Dynamics, the team developing it, has acquired 15 new top industry vets to help fortify the project including former Naughty Dog Creative Director Shaun Escayg who joins The Avengers Project as Creative Director, and as Director of Production Stephen Barry, a 27 year veteran from EA/Visceral Games.

Armed with this new talent the developer has made "tremendous progress" on the Avengers game. "We're committed to delivering an incredible, completely original Avengers experience to our gamers, and that means we are always looking to add amazing developers to our existing best in class studio talent," said Scot Amos, Co-Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics.

Play Anywhere Xbox Game Pass games can play on PC, too

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jan 24, 2018 4:16 PM CST

On the heels of Microsoft's big Xbox Game Pass announcement comes some even more welcome news: some of them can be played on PC as well.

Play Anywhere Xbox Game Pass games can play on PC, too

Just yesterday Microsoft confirmed that future first-party games like Sea of Thieves, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2 and even new Halo, Forza and Gears of War games can all be played on Xbox Game Pass. That means if you subscribe for $10 a month that you'll be able to play new titles the day they come out rather than ponying up the full $60 price tag. Plus there's an added 20% off bonus if you decide to buy the game and then cancel your subscription.

But now Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg confirms that Play Anywhere games on the service can be played on PC, too. And since most first-party Xbox One games are Play Anywhere...this could be a neat little boon for PC gamers to get in on the action as well. Which, of course, is Microsoft's plan now that Xbox is a multi-platform service and no longer a console.
