Phison's E12 controller featured at CES 2018

Jon Coulter | Storage | Jan 16, 2018 10:49 PM CST

CES 2018 - We looked at a lot of next-gen flash-based SSD technology at CES 2018 and the one that caught our attention the most was Phison's upcoming E12 controller.

Phison's E12 controller featured at CES 2018

The performance delivered was some of the best we've seen to date. In our opinion, the E12 is the best enthusiast SSD controller we witnessed in the entirety of the show. We did see another flash-based SSD with better 4K random read performance at QD1, but that we feel that is more than offset by the E12's 1300 MB/s better sequential write performance.

The E12 is eight channels of Gen3 x4 goodness supporting 3D flash. At up to 600K IOPS random read and random write, the E12 sports some of the best performance specifications of any consumer-based SSD we've seen to date. The E12 will support 3D MLC/TLC/QLC NAND flash and LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) error correction technology.

Toshiba's new SSD line-up featured at CES 2018

Jon Coulter | Storage | Jan 16, 2018 10:24 PM CST

CES 2018 - TweakTown had a chance to visit Toshiba at CES 2018 and view their SSD lineup. It was without a doubt one of the most impressive of the whole show. Toshiba had most of their current and upcoming SSD portfolio on full display. Right off the bat, we were drawn to Toshiba's newest SSD the RC100. Based on what we were shown, the RC100 is our choice for the best mobile upgrade of the entire show, because this 2-lane module is the most power efficient NVMe SSD we've seen to date.

Toshiba's new SSD line-up featured at CES 2018

Starting with Toshiba Memory Corporation's own state-of-the-art 64-layer, 3-bit-per-cell TLC (triple-level cell) BiCS FLASH and in-house developed SSD controller in a single package, the RC100 was built to offer consumers a viable alternative to pricier high-end NVMe SSDs. In addition to affordability, RC100 SSDs are designed for efficiency, delivering a power-optimized storage solution particularly sought after by mobile users looking to increase battery life.

The RC100 Series offers excellent performance that bridges the gap between SATA 6 gigabits per second and enthusiast-grade NVMe SSDs, ensuring it sits in the 'sweet spot' for value-oriented users looking to upgrade to the industry's latest interface and reduce cable clutter. The RC100 also integrates Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology to deliver up to 1,620 megabytes per second and 1,130MB/s in sequential read/write transfer rates and up to 160,000 and 120,000 random read/write IOPS, all without requiring onboard DRAM. Toshiba states that they will offer an HMB driver for Windows 7 and 8.1 users.

AMD hit with class action lawsuit over Spectre and Meltdown

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Jan 16, 2018 9:25 PM CST

We all know that the Meltdown and Spectre security holes have caused headaches for Intel and AMD, but now AMD has been hit with a class action lawsuit that seeks to "recover damages for Advanced Micro investors under the federal securities laws".

AMD hit with class action lawsuit over Spectre and Meltdown

Rosen Law Firm is a global investor rights firm, where a class action lawsuit has been kicked off on "behalf of purchasers of the securities of Advanced Micro Devices". The lawsuit details:

"Defendants during the Class Period made materially false and/or misleading statements and/or failed to disclose that: (1) a fundamental security flaw in Advanced Micro's processor chips renders them susceptible to hacking; and (2) as a result, Advanced Micro's public statements were materially false and misleading at all relevant times. When the true details entered the market, the lawsuit claims that investors suffered damages".

Cryptocurrency crash wipes $300 billion from market cap

Cryptocurrency crash wipes $300 billion from market cap

The entire cryptocurrency market cap reached over $800 billion on January 7, and has been on the decline since.

But the last 7 days have been horrible, where it dipped into the $700 billion area and then has really dived off a cliff in the last 24 hours into the sub-$500 billion mark, stabilizing (for now) at $530 billion.

Battlefield 1's Operation Campaigns are now FREE

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jan 16, 2018 7:33 PM CST

DICE is making some pretty big changes to their Operation Campaigns in Battlefield 1, and I'm sure it's from the continued heat the game is getting in the form of lacking players because they're too busy enthralled with Battlegrounds or Fortnite.

Battlefield 1's Operation Campaigns are now FREE

The developer has announced that BF1 players can play all Operation Campaigns, no matter if they have Battlefield 1's Premium Pass, or purchased the maps as a standalone DLC. Gamers without the DLC won't have access to them outside of Operations Campaigns, meaning that when you're finished with the campaign, the content is locked.

If you don't own the DLC, you won't have access to the additional weapons, elites, and more. Still, DICE has work to do on Battlefield 1 and I feel like BF1 has been an experiment gone wrong. Battlefield: Battle Royale wouldn't surprise me at this point.

Super Meat Boy is a success on Switch

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jan 16, 2018 3:24 PM CST

More and more gamers are buying indies on their Nintendo Switch platform, showing that AAA games aren't always all the rage.

Super Meat Boy is a success on Switch

The beloved hard-as-nails platformer Super Meat Boy is actually doing pretty good sales-wise on Nintendo's new handheld-console hybrid. In fact, according to the devs at Team Meat, the indie is pretty high up there in purchases and almost even surpassed the game's original launch some 7+ years ago.

"Super Meat Boy on Switch first day sales came shockingly close to it's debut on Xbox 360 back in 2010. That's. nuts," Team Meat said on Twitter.

Final Fantasy XV on PC will support mods

Square Enix has confirmed that mods will be available for Final Fantasy XV's impending release on PC.

Final Fantasy XV on PC will support mods

A few months ago Final Fantasy XV game director Hajime Tabata said he'd like to put mods in the PC port of the game, and now the team is living up to his wishes. In an official announcement Square Enix says that "ongoing mod support" will come to the Final Fantasy XV Windows Edition when it releases on March 6, but no exact details were cemented in place. We also don't know the limitations of these mods, but it's still a great indicator on the game's open-ended roadmap (last year I called FF15 the new Skyrim for good reason) and how the publisher sees the title.

Here's what Tabata said back in 2017:

Final Fantasy XV PC specs, release date announced

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jan 16, 2018 9:36 AM CST

Square Enix has locked in the PC spec requirements to play Final Fantasy 15, along with a release date...and the hardware reqs aren't too bad.

Final Fantasy XV PC specs, release date announced

A while back reports surfaced that Final Fantasy 15's Windows Edition on PC had a beefy recommended spec requirement of an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, but the publisher quickly said this isn't true. Fast forwarded to many weeks later and we see the open-world RPG can actually be played with an AMD R9 280 graphics card, showing just how much Square Enix has scaled the game.

Minimum specs to play FF15 on PC at 720p resolution include an R9 280 or an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 or GTX 1050 video card, an Intel Core i5-2500 or an AMD FX-6100 CPU (3.3GHz and above), and 8GB of RAM. Recommended specs to play at 1080p include a GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB of VRAM or an AMD RX 480, an Intel Core i7-3770 (3.4GHz and above) or an AMD FX-8350 (4GHz and above), and 16GB of RAM.

SEGA launch mystery game reveal countdown website

Jak Connor | Gaming | Jan 16, 2018 5:30 AM CST

A new website has been opened by SEGA titled "Senki" which only features a clock ticking down 3 days from now. It is expected that once the clock finishes its countdown a new title from SEGA will be announced.

SEGA launch mystery game reveal countdown website

We have a few things to go on in terms of figuring out what the next title could be, the cloudy atmospheric art style should be noted, as well as the floating islands that is seen in the background. A key hint could be the clock featured in the middle which for some reason is not ticking at a traditional 12-hour interval.

Two more hints that SEGA has given away is the title of the website "Senki" meaning "War Record" and also when the website went live it was categorized as "Arcade Game."

Single-player AAA game production costs increase by 10x

Jak Connor | Business, Financial & Legal | Jan 16, 2018 4:35 AM CST

Single-player games have had their cost of development increased by tenfold, according to Remedy Entertainments' Head of Communications, Thomas Puha. In a recent interview published by GamesIndustry.biz, Puha explained that the "reality is the traditional AAA single player experience is just really expensive to make."

Single-player AAA game production costs increase by 10x

Puha explains that even when going back 10 years that the console market still "roughly the same size" while the costs of developing new and more creatively challenging games continues to rise. Puha discusses that gamers now days expect much more from developers products, an example of this is how long the game is or the production value of the specific title.

"The reality is the traditional AAA single player experience is just really expensive to make. The expectation level from gamers is really high in terms of how long the game is, what sort of features it has, how good the production values are. All those things are very expensive to do. And if you go back 10 years, you could still say the console market is roughly the same size. In the end, the audience you're selling to is relatively the same size but the cost of making the game is ten-fold these days. So that's an obvious problem" said Puha.

Netflix won't be available on the Nintendo Switch as of yet

Jak Connor | Gaming | Jan 16, 2018 1:48 AM CST

In January 2017, Nintendo teased that they could be bringing video streaming services such as Netflix to the Nintendo Switch. It has been a year since we have last heard anything on the topic and now Netflix has said that there are no plans for Netflix to come to the Nintendo Switch.

QLOC to port Dark Souls Remastered to respective platforms

Jak Connor | Gaming | Jan 16, 2018 12:47 AM CST

It has been reported by Game Revolution as well as Kotaku that QLOC, a polish company responsible for porting games is going to be handling Dark Souls Remastered instead of FromSoftware.

QLOC to port Dark Souls Remastered to respective platforms

Kotaku reports that QLOC is the company of choice to bring Dark Souls Remastered to the Xbox One, PS4 and PC, this has not been officially confirmed yet but even if this isn't fact, QLOC would not be a bad choice. Games such as Injustice 2 PC, Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen PC, Dead Rising HD Remaster, Resident Evil 6, Devil may Cry and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition are some titles that have been ported over by QLOC, this shows that the company already has a few good titles under their belt.

Adding to the mystery of how Dark Souls Remastered is going to be ported over, is also the concerns of the Nintendo Switch version. According to both Kotaku and Game Revolution, the Switch version of Dark Souls Remastered is being taken care of by a unnamed Chinese company, this has also yet to be confirmed.

NBA Jam remake teased, and now it needs to happen

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jan 15, 2018 11:41 PM CST

One of the games that defined 90s console gaming would have to be NBA Jam, which had people like myself that would otherwise never play NBA games, obsess with it for months and months.

NBA Jam remake teased, and now it needs to happen

Now there are rumors that Tim Kitzrow, who famously voiced the great voice behind NBA Jam, is working with Microsoft on a remake of NBA Jam. Kitzrow recently spoke with ESPN, where he said that "there is movement in the works to get [a revival] done", confirming that he's indeed working on Microsoft to possibly make a new NBA Jam game.

EA bought the series back to life in 2003, after acquiring the rights in 2010 and trying to relaunch it in 2010, with an enhanced version released in 2011. A new NBA Jam was never made, but let's hope it starts soon and brings it to life in 4K.

Fallout 4 Hardcore Rebalance overhauls combat, and more

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jan 15, 2018 9:40 PM CST

The latest mod for Fallout 4 comes from 'Gromdal' in the form of the new Hardcore Rebalance mod which does just that: makes the game more hardcore, and rebalances a bunch of content in the game.

Fallout 4 Hardcore Rebalance overhauls combat, and more

Fallout 4 has its bullet sponges removed at high levels, with Gromdal reducing the HP gained at levels to half the normal rate of the normal Fallout 4, something that applies to both the NPCs and the player, but also improves NPC combat AI and rebalances weapons completely.

The new mod makes it more likely to find legendary weapons, removes IWIN buttons for the players, and the legendary effects that destroy an enemy has been removed and replaced with flat damage bonuses. The mod also sees teh removal of the short damage buff for legendary enemies, while legendary armor bonuses have been made smaller for things like the sentinel.
