The war between Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin heats up

Casey Pyne | Cryptocurrency & Mining | Apr 11, 2018 12:11 AM CDT

Deconomy 2018 saw shots fired from both bitcoin (BTC) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) camps. Roger Ver (BCH advocate) accusing Samson Mow (BTC advocate) of setting back digital currency by years and crying out that babies are dying in third world countries because of not being able to help the unbanked quick enough and Samson Mow acting too cool for school. Even Vitalik Buterin of Ethereum taking aim at BCH advocate Craig Wright.

This whole fiasco bought up the question when we are trying to create a better world, why would we lower ourselves to fighting over which is better? One Reddit user responded to the question:

Space Invaders best-selling entertainment product, not GTA V

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Apr 10, 2018 10:42 PM CDT

In the last 24 hours, headlines have been dominated - TweakTown included, of Grand Theft Auto V being the best-selling entertainment product of all time... but MarketWatch was wrong.

Space Invaders best-selling entertainment product, not GTA V

The best-selling entertainment product of all time goes to Space Invaders, which has generated a huge $13.93 billion, followed closely by Pac-Man with $12.81 billion. Not-so-surprisingly, Street Fighter 2 is in third position with $10.6 billion. GTA V in comparison has made $6 billion or so, while World of Warcraft has dragged in $10 billion for Blizzard.

Sure, Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Street Fighter 2 were all arcade games (and on other devices) but they still count as an entertainment product. It's pretty crazy to think Space Invaders made that much money, in the wake of tens of millions of consoles and hundreds of millions of PCs that are now used by consumers today.

BIOSTAR confirms Z390 chipset with Z390 RACING motherboards

Anthony Garreffa | Motherboards | Apr 10, 2018 9:40 PM CDT

BIOSTAR has accidentally leaked out Intel's upcoming Z390 chipset, with an early reveal of their own Z390 RACING GT3 and GT5 motherboards with a manual on the B360 RACING GT3S leaking and teasing the Z390 as well.

BIOSTAR confirms Z390 chipset with Z390 RACING motherboards

If we're seeing manuals on these motherboards, it means that the new/refreshed Z390 motherboards are imminent. The manual can even be downloaded from BIOSTAR's website, but we don't know much about the Z390 chipset at all. We do know that BIOSTAR's new motherboard has support for CPUs at up to 95W TDP, which might "indirectly confirm the maximum TDP of 8-core Coffee Lake-S CPU" according to VideoCardz.

Toy Story 4 penciled in for June 21, 2019

Anthony Garreffa | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Apr 10, 2018 8:45 PM CDT

Toy Story 4 will surely be one of the biggest movies of 2019, and while the new sequel was announced back in 2014, there was never a rock solid release date... until now.

Toy Story 4 penciled in for June 21, 2019

The new director of Toy Story 4, Josh Cooley, took to Twitter with a simple image with a bunch of sticky notes in the shape of the number 4, and a date: June 21, 2019. Cooley was the director of Inside Out and is co-directing Toy Story 4 with Jonas Rivera who he worked on with Coco recently.

Originally, Toy Story 4 was meant to be directed by John Lasseter before he left the project in July 2017 following reports of sexual harassment allegations against him. Rashida Jones had the script prepared along with Will McCormack, but they removed themselves from the project.

Leap Motion's Project North Star: human-computer interface

Anthony Garreffa | Extended Reality (XR) | Apr 10, 2018 7:35 PM CDT

Leap Motion has teased the future of human-computer interfaces with their new Project North Star, a prototype headset that some of the virtual world, overlayed in the real one.

Leap Motion's Project North Star: human-computer interface

North Star is a full augmented reality platform that Leap Motion says "allows us to chart and sail the waters of a new world, where the digital and physical substrates exist as a single fluid experience. The first step of this endeavor was to create a system with the technical specifications of a pair of augmented glasses from the future. This meant our prototype had to far exceed the state of the art in resolution, field-of-view, and framerate".

Inside, North Star rocks two low-persistence 1600x1440 displays at 120FPS with a huge 100-degree field of view. Leap Motion includes a "world-class" 180-degree hand tracking sensor that is "a system unlike anything anyone had seen before".

PS5 won't release in 2018, probably in 2020 says analyst

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 10, 2018 4:15 PM CDT

Sony's new PlayStation 5 (or whatever the system will be called) isn't due to release anytime soon, according to industry analyst Michael Pachter.

PS5 won't release in 2018, probably in 2020 says analyst

Although the PlayStation 4 family of consoles has been around for about five years now, Sony shouldn't be in any rush to reset everything with a new console hardware cycle. After all, the PS4 Pro, which marks a new iterative cycle cadence that has served Sony (and Microsoft) tremendously well, is only two years old and the Japanese tech giant depends on the PlayStation brand quite a bit. But if not in 2018, when should Sony release the PS5? 2020 is a good bet, according to Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter.

In a recent interview with WCCFTech, Pachter expressed that it was quite unlikely Sony would release the PS5 anytime this year...and next year probably won't happen either. Sony's new PlayStation console's release has a probability of "25% next year and 75% in 2020," he said.

Jak Connor | Gaming | Apr 10, 2018 5:00 AM CDT

Panic Button, the guys behind the DOOM port to the Nintendo Switch are also porting over Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, gameplay footage of the title running on the Switch has been spotted and it looks quite decent for a port.

Wolfenstein II: Killing Nazis on the Go - Switch reveal

18 minutes of gameplay footage has been released of Wolfentstein II running on the Nintendo Switch and it looks quite smooth for a triple-A title port. The game is only running at 30FPS and it can obviously be seen that the resolution, textures and character models have taken quite a hefty downscale compared to the Xbox One and PS4 versions.

There is currently no specific release date for Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus arriving on the Nintendo Switch but there is hopes that it will arrive sometime this year.

The Elder Scrolls: Legends could be coming to consoles

Jak Connor | Gaming | Apr 10, 2018 2:00 AM CDT

DualShockers got into contact with the Senior Vice President of Marketing Pete Hines and throughout the interview Hines was asked if Bethesda has plans on expanding more to other platforms.

The Elder Scrolls: Legends could be coming to consoles

Hines answered by saying that Bethesda works extremely hard at bringing their titles to as many platforms as possible. Hines gives an example of The Elder Scrolls: Legends coming to consoles and perhaps even the Nintendo Switch, Hines doesn't give any promises but does say that he "hope that happens, but we'll have to see."

Here is the full version of what Hines said throughout the interview when asked about the future of Bethesda games on different platforms: "Honestly I think everything is on the table. At the end of the day - and this is true for every game, not just Legends - we like to try and get our games to as many platforms as possible, so that as many people as possible have the option to play."

Rockefeller family to enter cryptocurrency space

Casey Pyne | Cryptocurrency & Mining | Apr 10, 2018 1:27 AM CDT

Venrock, the Rockefeller family's venture capital arm, have announced a strategic partnership with CoinFund, a three year old crypto investment group. Venrock partner, David Pakman went on fortune.com's 'Balancing the Ledger' and spoke to Robert Hackett and Jen Wieczner about the partnership.

Rockefeller family to enter cryptocurrency space

A very congenial Pakman seemed incredibly fond of the crypto space, not something we thought we would hear from any old money families so soon. Pakman said he finds it too convenient that platforms such as Google and Mailchimp are blanket banning the crypto space rather than taking the time to find out who the bad actors are. He also went onto say that he has no problem with the current crypto exchanges acting as gatekeepers and using pay to play tactics as he believes that decentralised exchanges will disrupt this soon enough.

After the friendly and crypto-positive banter Pakman goes onto say that: "Venture capital itself is effectively a gatekeeper industry and I'd actually like to see that undone."

Nintendo Switch 2018 line-up could be bigger than expected

Jak Connor | Gaming | Apr 10, 2018 1:00 AM CDT

Recently we have been hearing about titles coming to the Nintendo Switch, big staple titles such as Super Smash Bros or even the speculation towards Spyro Reignited Trilogy coming to the Nintendo Switch suggests that 2018 will be a big year for Nintendo. Now the GameStop CEO says 2018 could be bigger than we expected.

Nintendo Switch 2018 line-up could be bigger than expected

Michael Mauler, GameStop CEO was asked via Express about the future of games coming to Nintendo's console, he replied with "I think this year when we look at the slate of titles, many of which haven't been announced yet, this year also looks very, very strong. So I think, at least, for 2018, we'll continue to see the strong software slate drive additional install base on the hardware.... We don't have really visibility for 2019 yet, but for 2018 it should play out that way."

If Mauler is correct and there is a bunch of unannounced Switch games that are due for release this year this could suggest that sometime soon we will be hearing another announcement for a triple-A title coming to the Switch. There is hopes that this could be a Pokemon title for the Switch but the recent listing for Spyro Reignited Trilogy seems more likely to be the case.

Class action lawsuit after $170m in crypto goes missing

Casey Pyne | Cryptocurrency & Mining | Apr 10, 2018 12:24 AM CDT

In February this year $170 million worth of a cryptocurrency called Nano (formerly known as RaiBlocks) seemingly vanished on an Italian cryptocurrency exchange called BitGrail.

Class action lawsuit after $170m in crypto goes missing

BitGrail says that they were the victim of theft, and the hacker took advantage of malfunctions in the software made available by the Nano team and, therefore, are not responsible for the disappearance of Nano. Yet, Nano is singing a different tune and claim on their blog: "From our own preliminary investigation, no double spending was detected on the ledger and we have no reason to believe the loss was due to an issue in the Nano protocol. The problems appear to be related to BitGrail's software."

BitGrail is currently suspended and hasn't put out any communication on their website since mid-March and yet the Nano team are forging ahead although they are in for some trouble now that a class action lawsuit has been filed against them. Silver Miller, an American law firm that proclaims they are 'the leading cryptocurrency investor law firm in the country' state on their website:

Monero hard fork successful, miners rejoice

Casey Pyne | Cryptocurrency & Mining | Apr 10, 2018 12:05 AM CDT

One of my favourite privacy coins has managed to stay the hand of ASIC miners- for now. In March, the Chinese company Bitmain announced they were releasing an Antminer X3, which was specifically developed to mine Monero.

Monero hard fork successful, miners rejoice

Fearing mass use of the kind of ASIC offered by Bitmain would make the network more centralized by forcing small-time miners using home PCs and other devices out, creator Riccardo Spagni said: "I will do everything in my power to help the community prevent the proliferation of centralisation-inducing ASICs on the Monero network."

And he did just that. The hashrate and difficulty has dropped dramatically over the past 48 hours. Unlike the BCH/BTC split, a new coin has not been created, this has purely been a fork to avoid ASIC miners bleeding the network. In true Spgagni style he tweeted out the fork had been successful.

Intel's next-gen Xeon: LGA 4189, 8-channel DDR4, up to 230W

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Apr 9, 2018 10:20 PM CDT

Intel is fighting in a new battlefield where sleeping dragon AMD has erupted and awoken with their EPYC range of server CPUs, with Chipzilla's next-gen Ice Lake Xeon CPUs being teased and leaked by Power Stamp Alliance.

Intel's next-gen Xeon: LGA 4189, 8-channel DDR4, up to 230W

The new Ice Lake Xeon processors are set to release sometime later this year or in early 2019, with a new LGA 4189 socket and SKUs that will offer a huge 230W TDP, up from the max 205W offerings with both Skylake and Cascade Lake Xeon CPUs. Why the higher TDP? We should expect next-gen Xeon CPUs with even more cores and higher clock counts, all driving up the power consumption.

Intel's next-gen Ice Lake Xeon CPUs will reportedly rock 8-channel DDR4 support, with Cascade Lake already supporting 2933MHz DDR4, we should expect the same or higher-end DDR4 support from Ice Lake. Cascade Lake supports 768GB of DDR4, so with the additional slots (16 x DDR4 in 8-channel mode) will drive memory support on Ice Lake through to a huge 1TB.

AMD already developing Zen 5 architecture, could be on 5nm

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Apr 9, 2018 9:17 PM CDT

AMD is forging ahead with its next-next-gen Zen CPU architecture, with lead Zen architect Mike Clark confirming that AMD is now working on the "Zen 5" CPU microarchitecture.

AMD already developing Zen 5 architecture, could be on 5nm

The news comes directly from a one-year-later video from AMD about their Ryzen CPU, right before the new Ryzen 2000 series processors launch on April 19. AMD hosted a panel with the top brass behind Ryzen, with people from both their CPU engineering and marketing departments.

VideoCardz reports that "manufacturers often skip 4 due to its meaning in Chinese culture. It's an unlucky number because it's homophonous to the word 'death'. Something that AMD surely does not want to be associated with Zen architecture". Interesting.

Cliffy B's new battle royale game is 80s nostalgia carnage

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 9, 2018 5:03 PM CDT

Thanks to PUBG and Fortnite, the battle royale craze is a billion-dollar rage in the games industry right now and everyone wants in--especially the Lawbreakers devs at Boss Key Productions.

Cliffy B's new battle royale game is 80s nostalgia carnage

Earlier today Boss Key, the studio founded by Unreal Tournament alum Cliffy B, made a surprise announcement of their new free-to-play battle royale game Radical Heights. The game in question is a massive mish-mash of 1980's tropes and nostalgia, incorporating a look that retro/vaporwave listeners will recognize right away: neon colors, embarrassing clothing and outfits, and outrageous carnage. Oh and arcades, too--don't forget those. In sooth Radical Heights looks like something on an Intergalactic Cable episode of Rick and Morty rather than anything I'd expect to actually see released on the games market (for both good and bad).

Radical Heights will launch in early access tomorrow, which also coincides with the huge new Retribution event in Overwatch (probably bad timing there). The game will of course be free-to-play, which was Lawbreakers' original plan, and has no publisher attached to the game this time.
