NVIDIA mega rumor: GeForce RTX 2190, GeForce RTX 2180 Ti naming scheme

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 10, 2020 11:02 PM CDT

NVIDIA announced the "Ultimate Countdown" towards its next-gen Ampere GeForce graphics cards, but then there were the hints using numbers and more specifically: 21.

NVIDIA mega rumor: GeForce RTX 2190, GeForce RTX 2180 Ti naming scheme

After posting the #UltimateCountdown tweet, NVIDIA added: "21 Days. 21 Years" which signifies August 31 (21 days after the countdown was announced on August 10) and it has been 21 years since the first GeForce, the first-ever GPU, the GeForce 256.

So much around the number 21 that if you take '256' and times it by '21' you get 5376, which is the purported number of CUDA cores on NVIDIA's upcoming GA102 GPU.

NVIDIA is 'not worried' about AMD's next-gen Big Navi GPU

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 10, 2020 9:50 PM CDT

NVIDIA found itself in a spot of trouble earlier this year, when reports surfaced that NVIDIA wanted to "leap frog" AMD in order to "prevent them" from getting bigger.

NVIDIA is 'not worried' about AMD's next-gen Big Navi GPU

What happened? NVIDIA reportedly "underestimated the effect of AMD embracing TSMC, and made some errors in its own plans for migrating to advanced nodes. Moving to Samsung and wavering in its TSMC strategy, only to be go back to TSMC later, NVIDIA was unable to secure enough 7nm capacity, resulting in AMD grabbing the limelight, eroding NVIDIA's brand value, and increase its own market share for GPUs".

Well, that might be the case this year -- where AMD's next-gen RDNA 2-based 'Big Navi' graphics card possibly toppling the best Ampere-based GeForce RTX 30 series graphics card (more on that here). At least, for this year -- but don't underestimate NVIDIA and its unrelenting thirst for being the best.

NVIDIA crazy rumor: RTX 3080 software locked VRAM until RDNA 2 is out

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 10, 2020 8:46 PM CDT

Oh boy, a super juicy rumor is sizzling like chili on my tongue -- NVIDIA could software lock the GeForce RTX 3080 and its VRAM at launch, but why?

NVIDIA crazy rumor: RTX 3080 software locked VRAM until RDNA 2 is out

Because NVIDIA want to see how good the flagship RDNA 2-based graphics card is, that's why. NVIDIA could hold back and gimp the GeForce RTX 3080 with its purported 12GB of VRAM on a 384-bit bus, down to just 10GB on a 320-bit bus.

Once AMD details its flagship RDNA 2 graphics card, then NVIDIA would -- at least according to Moore's Law is Dead's sources -- un-gimp its card and unleash the proper 12GB of VRAM on its original 384-bit memory bus. Tom does note that there is a "slim chance" of this happening, but still the very suggestion this could happen is actually interesting.

AMD's next-next-next-gen GPU, Navi 41 aka RDNA 4 teased

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 10, 2020 8:02 PM CDT

We have had some incredibly juicy rumors to deal with in the last few days, and one of those is about the RDNA 4-based Navi 41 GPU from AMD.

AMD's next-next-next-gen GPU, Navi 41 aka RDNA 4 teased

Komachi has tweeted out some delicious tidbits on the purported the Navi 41 GPU, simply saying "there is Navi 41". We don't know anything about Navi 41, but if we connect some of those dots from what Navi 10 was, what Navi 21 will be very soon in RDNA 2 aka Big Navi aka Navi 2X -- and then after that the super-exciting RDNA 3 architecture.

AMD's next-gen RDNA 2 architecture will power the new Navi 21-powered Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards, but after that will be RDNA 3 with the Navi 31 GPU. Komachi reports: "NV3X GCD/MCD means probably Graphics Complex Die/Memory Complex Die of Navi 3X (Navi 31)".

NVIDIA's flagship GeForce RTX 30 series card could have 24GB VRAM

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 10, 2020 7:16 PM CDT

The rumor mill is churning for NVIDIA's next-gen Ampere-based GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards, with fresh info stating the flagship card will feature a huge 24GB of VRAM.

NVIDIA's flagship GeForce RTX 30 series card could have 24GB VRAM

NVIDIA is rumored to be launching 3 different variants based on the PG132 reference board, which should fill out the 3 higher-end GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards. This is most likely going to be something like the GeForce RTX 3080, GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, and GeForce RTX 3090.

These PG132 boards with 24GB of VRAM isn't new, with rumors from June 2020 stating that the flagship GeForce RTX 3090 would feature the GA102 GPU, 350W TGP, and 24GB of super-fast GDDR6X memory.

WarnerMedia restructuring leads to layoffs, fate of WB Games uncertain

AT&T may sell its WB Games division in a bid to significantly lower spending costs and instead license out IPs and properties to third-party studios.

WarnerMedia restructuring leads to layoffs, fate of WB Games uncertain

AT&T is currently restructuring its WarnerMedia division, leading to layoffs in sales and marketing divisions and labels like WB Games shifting to different areas. Sources tell Deadline that WarnerMedia is letting go employees across its divisions to reduce company spending. This move will help chip away at AT&T's massive $152 billion debt incurred from the Time Warner buyout and drastic reductions in cable subscriptions.

The layoffs and departures include high-level executives like WB Worldwide Television Distribution president Jeffrey Schlesinger, Worldwide Theater Distribution & Home Entertainment president Ron Sanders, and WB Entertainment Chief Financial Officer Kim Williams.

Verizon customers get new Avengers game for free

Verizon has teamed up with Marvel and Square Enix to give out thousands of free Avengers game copies to Verizon subscribers.

Verizon customers get new Avengers game for free

Marvel isn't playing favorites with just PlayStation. The new Avengers game's marketing plan goes beyond the Spider-Man exclusivity on PlayStation consoles. Today Verizon announced that it will give away 5,000 copies of Crystal Dynamics' new Avengers live game to wireless and Fios customers.

The freebie goes live on August 10 on the Verizon Up rewards platform. Each ticket includes a special key that must be entered on the PlayAvengers.com/Verizon webpage.

New Avengers PS4 exclusive content includes a lot more than Spider-Man

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 10, 2020 3:45 PM CDT

Spider-Man is just the beginning. Marvel's new Avengers game has a galaxy of platform-exclusive content and incentives.

New Avengers PS4 exclusive content includes a lot more than Spider-Man

Marvel, Sony, and Crystal Dynamics just caught a lot of flak for making Spider-Man exclusive to the new Avengers game on PS4 and PS5. The decision makes a lot of sense, though; Sony has the movie rights to Spider-Man, and Marvel (aka Disney) cares most about sales and digital revenues, so they're attached to the biggest brand in gaming. Marvel doesn't make its own games, and instead licenses them out, so live games represent the ripest earnings fruit.

Turns out this deal goes a lot farther than Spider-Man. Marvel has signed an exclusivity deal with Sony that includes lots of other PlayStation-first content in the new Avengers live game. Spider-man is a permanent platform-exclusive, but other things like cosmetic skins will be 30-days exclusive on the PlayStation ecosystem.

Cyberpunk 2077's nomads aren't savages, but old-fashioned country folk

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 10, 2020 2:25 PM CDT

It turns out Cyberpunk 2077's Nomads aren't desert savages, but country folk with strong communities and values.

Cyberpunk 2077's nomads aren't savages, but old-fashioned country folk

In a recent Night City Wire lifestream, CDPR reveals new info about the three lifepath origin stories you can pick for V.: Street Kid, Nomad, and Corpo. The most surprising one was Nomad, which we haven't heard much about. The Nomads live in South California on the outskirts of Night City in tight-knit groups. They're desert-people that live in ramshackle RVs that strongly contrast the hyper-tech world of Night City; in a very real sense, the Nomads are stuck in a different time period.

It's a whole other world in the arid badlands. Makeshift muscle cars roar the roadways, held together with mis-matched parts. There's a genuine Mad Max vibe, but it's offset by strong Southern values and principles. The Nomads have a strong undercurrent of conservatism melded with survival, which connects them into strong-bonded families and groups. But there's also the self-described hunger for freedom, the desire to roam the desert and resist the Corpos that present law and order.

Exclusive: AIB custom Ampere cards launch alongside Founders Edition

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 10, 2020 12:21 PM CDT

The last few months have been some of the most insane months of the GPU industry, between NVIDIA's upcoming Ampere launch and AMD's next stomp with RDNA 2 and Big Navi -- there's no time for a break.

Exclusive: AIB custom Ampere cards launch alongside Founders Edition

But then a source reached out to me a few days ago and told me something very interesting, something that I think could be a real game changer for NVIDIA's big launch of Ampere-based GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards: custom models will be launching alongside the Founders Edition models... or at the very least, very shortly after the FE cards ship.

I had a source tell me that custom AIB models will be on offer starting in September, so with current rumors of an Ampere GeForce RTX 30 series announcement on September 9 and then a purported launch on September 17 -- custom cards being made available "in September" would be huge.

Xbox Series S confirmed real by new controller leaks

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Aug 10, 2020 12:17 PM CDT

As we've reported since 2018, Microsoft will release two next-gen consoles this holiday: The Xbox Series X, and the cheaper, digital-only Xbox Series S. Now the Series S has been accidentally leaked.

Xbox Series S confirmed real by new controller leaks

Microsoft's cheaper next-gen Xbox Series S just got confirmed as real from new leaked controller packaging. More leaks are starting to pop up, including physical video of the controller and box that mentions the Series S.

While there's been no official announcement, the budget-friendly Series S (codenamed Lockhart) will reportedly feature a weaker 4TFLOP GPU that targets 1440p 60FPS, instead of the Xbox Series X's 12.15 TFLOP GPU, which is capable of hitting 4K 60FPS. The Series S will apparently feature the same 7nm 8-core, 16-thread Zen 2 CPU clocked at 3.8GHz, though.

NVIDIA should reveal next-gen GeForce RTX 30 series cards on August 31

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 10, 2020 10:10 AM CDT

I'm currently on-board the Ampere Hype Train right now, with NVIDIA officially kicking off the marketing campaign for its next-gen GeForce graphics cards.

NVIDIA should reveal next-gen GeForce RTX 30 series cards on August 31

As a long time GeForce fan (my online handle has been 'anthony256' right after I got my hands-on the GeForce 256 back in 1999) it makes the hairs on my arms stand up to even write about this. NVIDIA followed up its #UltimateCountdown tease with "21 Days. 21 Years".

Now, 21 days from now is August 31, 2020 -- why is that important?

NVIDIA teases 'Ultimate Countdown' for Ampere GeForce RTX 30 series

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Aug 10, 2020 8:20 AM CDT

NVIDIA has officially kicked off the marketing hype train for its next-gen Ampere-based GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards with a simple teaser on Twitter.

NVIDIA teases 'Ultimate Countdown' for Ampere GeForce RTX 30 series

All the tweet says is #UltimateCountdown which has got me personally thinking that NVIDIA could change the nomenclature like I've wanted for the new GeForce RTX graphics cards -- I wanted the GeForce RTX 3090 ULTRA, for the return of ULTRA -- but maybe we're looking at the GeForce RTX 3090 ULTIMATE?

ULTIMATE is an important branding for NVIDIA right now, and I'm sure even more so going forward -- they have their G-SYNC ULTIMATE monitors and TVs, so it makes sense to have the "Ultimate Countdown" being a countdown to something Ultimate-related, right?

Oops, the not-yet-confirmed, but cheaper Xbox Series S gets confirmed

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Aug 10, 2020 2:46 AM CDT

Well, it seems Microsoft is going to be forced to confirm and announce its cheaper Xbox Series S console now that a new leak was shown on Twitter.

Oops, the not-yet-confirmed, but cheaper Xbox Series S gets confirmed

Twitter user 'Zak S' shows off a new Xbox controller that on the side says it is for the Xbox Series X/S consoles, seemingly confirming Microsoft's cheaper "codename Anaconda" console. Xbox Series S is meant to have 7.5GB of GDDR6 versus the beefier 13.5GB GDDR6 inside of the Xbox Series X.

Microsoft is expected to have performance on the cheaper Xbox Series S much lower than the Xbox Series X, and even under the Xbox One X. We're looking at around 4 TFLOPs for the Xbox Series X, while the flagship Xbox Series X will be pumping away at 12 TFLOPs.

NASA uses Hubble to make major breakthrough in search for alien life

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Aug 10, 2020 2:33 AM CDT

NASA has used the famous Hubble Space Telescope to do science that will one day be used as a means of detecting alien life on other planets.

NASA uses Hubble to make major breakthrough in search for alien life

According to a recent blog post from NASA, and the above video, NASA took advantage of the lunar eclipse by using Hubble and the Moon to observe the light reflecting through Earth's atmosphere. As the video explains, NASA used Hubble to observe the light reflecting off the surface of the Moon and beamed back into Earth's atmosphere, and by observing the wavelengths of light, NASA was able to detect Earth's ozone.

So, why is this important? By NASA successfully doing this experiment with Earth, they have proven they could use the same technique with other high-power telescopes that are tasked with finding and examining exoplanets. Here's what NASA said, "Hubble did not look at Earth directly. Instead, the astronomers used the Moon as a mirror to reflect sunlight, which had passed through Earth's atmosphere, and then reflected back towards Hubble."

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare now takes up 212GB storage on the PC

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone recently had their Season 5 update, which was a huge installation on the PC as it was -- weighing in at a huge 54.2GB download.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare now takes up 212GB storage on the PC

But developer Infinity Ward did say that there would be a "decrease on overall footprint" of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. So it wouldn't turn out to be the already 200GB+ that the game was on the PC, plus the 54.2GB update for Season 5 that would push it over 250GB.

The overall size of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on the PC is between 200-212GB, my personal installation size on my PC is 198GB while I've seen 212GB on other systems and everything in between.
