Rockstar buys Halo dev Ruffian Games to help with GTA 6

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 13, 2020 4:35 PM CDT

Rockstar Games has purchased majority interest in Halo and Crackdown 2 developer Ruffian Games for an undisclosed amount, and formed the brand new Rockstar Dundee branch.

Rockstar buys Halo dev Ruffian Games to help with GTA 6

According to recent document filings, Take-Two Interactive subsidiary Rockstar Games has purchased majority stake in Ruffian Games via an acquisition takeover. Ruffian is now officially called Rockstar Dundee, named after Ruffian's location in Dundee, Scotland, and joins Rockstar's international webwork of dev studios. At the time of writing, Rockstar Games now has 10 worldwide studios.

The buyout wasn't explicitly announced since Rockstar is technically a private company within Take-Two. The acquisition gives important clues in what's next from Rockstar and it's likely the takeover was planned as far back as 2019. Last year, Ruffian confirmed that it's helping Rockstar develop multiple new games.

Ailing retailer GameStop teams up with Microsoft to power its online infrastructure, employee teams, and solidify a future in a digital-driven landscape.

Gamestop teams up with Microsoft to push ecommerce ambitions

GameStop has been in trouble for years now. As of June, the company owes a staggering $417 million in debt and its recent storefront transformations have been disrupted thanks to COVID-19. Now the retailer is pivoting more towards digital ecommerce without giving up on physical console, hardware, and merchandise sales.

GameStop recently announced a strategic multi-year partnership with Microsoft that will help it transition more towards ecommerce. Microsoft's Dynamic365 software and cloud suite will power GameStop's business data infrastructure, arming the retailer with robust, flexible, and efficient tools to manage sales and other key data points.

15 years later, Microsoft is still supporting Xbox 360 in a big way

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 13, 2020 2:31 PM CDT

Thanks to Microsoft's expansive backwards compatibility initiative, the Xbox 360 remains an important part of next-gen.

15 years later, Microsoft is still supporting Xbox 360 in a big way

By embracing the past, Microsoft has forged a bright future for Xbox. The Series X/Series S next-gen duo has the widest games catalog because it plays for generations of Xbox games: original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and next-gen exclusives. I've often said this is the most important feature for next-gen.

Even 15 years later during a time that sees the most powerful, synergized, and advanced consoles ever made, Microsoft still isn't ready to leave the Xbox 360 behind. One of the most important features has been unlocked on the Xbox 360: game save preservation and easy migration.

Xbox Series X/S can double frame rates in backward compatible games

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 13, 2020 1:37 PM CDT

Backwards compatible games get significant boosts on the new Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, opening up a new dimension of play on yesteryear games.

Xbox Series X/S can double frame rates in backward compatible games

Today Microsoft confirmed the Series X/S next-gen duo can double frame rates in select backwards compatible games. Optimized titles like Fallout 4 get boosted from 30FPS to 60FPS on the new hardware thanks to advanced new BC techniques and higher-end CPU, GPU, RAM, and SSD components. Microsoft is careful to say not every game will get the 60FPS bump though.

This is a huge milestone that effectively changes how games can play. Titles originally restricted to just 30FPS on the weaker, Jaguar-powered Xbox One are now unshackled to mirror PC-esque performance on the new consoles. The jump to 60FPS is a big leap for specific games, especially games with shooting mechanics like Fallout 4. There's still a lot we don't know about this mode--like resolution targets, or what games support it--and like anything else with next-gen, there's lots of variability here.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's new update will make PC version smaller

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Oct 13, 2020 12:46 AM CDT

Finally... finally, finally, finally -- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is about to get a bit smaller on the PC with its new 1.28 update that will begin rolling out in the next few hours.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare's new update will make PC version smaller

The new update will let PC owners of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare uninstall specific parts of the game, so if you're only playing Warzone or multiplayer in MW, you can uninstall the single player campaign and save some precious space on your HDD or SSD.

The news is coming from Paul Haile, who is the Production Director on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, announcing it over Twitter. We don't know what else the new COD: MW 1.28 update will include, or how big the patch will be -- but whatever is required to reduce the storage required for PC users since the game is weighing around 250GB -- a quarter of a terabyte.

Quest 2 requires Facebook even for existing Oculus accounts

Kevin Carbotte | Extended Reality (XR) | Oct 12, 2020 4:27 PM CDT

In August, Facebook announced that new Oculus accounts would soon require Facebook account integration. With Quest 2 launching this week, that change is now in effect. In a blog post today, the company confirmed that Quest 2 requires Facebook even for existing account holders.

Quest 2 requires Facebook even for existing Oculus accounts

Facebook's new Oculus account policy requires that new users use a Facebook account to create an Oculus account. The company previously said that existing Oculus account holders would be exempt from the change for two years, but we now know that only applies to legacy headsets.

Quest 2 activation requires linking your Oculus account to a Facebook account, but don't worry, that doesn't mean you can't use a gamer tag. Oculus accounts still use gamer tags, but they now need Facebook accounts for user identification. You can choose to leave your real name public, or you can hide your Facebook name on your Oculus profile.

Watch Dogs Legion requires RTX 3080 for 4K Ultra with ray-tracing on

Thanks to DLSS, Watch Dogs Legion can run at 4K Ultra with ray traced visuals...but it requires some hefty GPU horsepower.

Watch Dogs Legion requires RTX 3080 for 4K Ultra with ray-tracing on

Today Ubisoft revealed a revised PC spec sheet for Watch Dogs Legion outlining what kinds of hardware you'll need for ray traced gameplay. The game has three varying ray-tracing perf targets: 1080p, 1440p, and 4K, the latter of which requires an RTX 3080 (which is actually capable of hitting 30-60FPS at 4K Ultra with RT), and Intel Core i9-9900k/AMD Ryzen 7 3700X CPU, 16GB of RAM, and 65GB of install space (20GB of which is from a 4K texture pack).

The 1080p and 1440p spec requirements are reasonable, and you can skate by with some serious older hardware at 1080p with Low settings, including an NVIDIA GTX 970, 4GB of RAM, and in Intel Core i5-4460 CPU.

Amazon's Lord of the Rings TV show reaches pivotal point in filming

Production for Amazon's Lord of the Rings TV show has already begun, and now the director has revealed filming has reached a milestone.

Amazon's Lord of the Rings TV show reaches pivotal point in filming

The director for the coming TV show, J.A Bayona, took to his Instagram story and took a photo of himself and said, "This is my face of having completed more than half the weeks of shooting. More tomorrow!". We can assume he is talking about the Lord of the Rings TV show from the emoji's he used at the end of the statement, which were wizards and elves.

Bayona has previously directed Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and will be directing the series's first two episodes. For those who don't know, the show's filming is taking place in New Zealand, and we can assume that production is running slightly behind schedule due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, New Zealand has recently listed all restrictions for Auckland.
