PlayStation 5 has 120mm double-sided air intake cooling fan

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 7, 2020 7:24 AM CDT

The PlayStation 5 teardown reveal is finally here. Now we get a proper look at the PS5's cooling solution.

PlayStation 5 has 120mm double-sided air intake cooling fan

The PS5 features a massive 120mm fan that can pull air from both sides of the console, a new teardown video reveals. The PS5's strange chassis is specifically designed to pull air in a certain way through the intake vents, and the powerful 120mm centrifugal fan is 45mm thick and features sharp fins to direct the airflow. The entire rear of the PS5 is devoted to heat exhaust.

The PS5's cooling solution is somewhat similar to the Xbox Series X's insofar as size, but not in specificity. The Series X's fan is 130mm and pulls air from bottom to top, and the PS5 pulls air from the sides to push out the back.

Virtuix has a new Omni that includes a headset and fits in your home

Kevin Carbotte | Extended Reality (XR) | Oct 7, 2020 5:00 AM CDT

Virtuix, the leader in omnidirectional treadmills for VR entertainment, announced its return to the consumer market with the Omni One, a newly designed Omni for home use.

Virtuix has a new Omni that includes a headset and fits in your home

Virtuix has been around for many years, but it doesn't currently cater to the consumer VR market. The company manufactures the Omni Pro omnidirectional treadmills, which it sells to the VR arcade market. Next year, Virtuix will turn its eyes to the home entertainment market with the Omni One launch, a lighter, more compact omnidirectional treadmill, complete standalone VR headset in the box.

"Omni One is like nothing else out there - it's a breakthrough in omnidirectional treadmill technology," said Jan Goetgeluk, founder and CEO of Virtuix. "Compared to Omni Pro, Omni One no longer has a support ring. So, it gives users unrestricted freedom of movement, including crouching, squatting, backing up, and even jumping. You essentially become one with the machine."

Activision cuts Blizzard studio to 'better adapt to digital industry'

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 6, 2020 6:32 PM CDT

Activision plans to close a Blizzard studio in France that employees 400 people, sources tell Bloomberg's Jason Schreier.

Activision cuts Blizzard studio to 'better adapt to digital industry'

Activision's creeping control over business partner Blizzard has affected everything from games development, management shakeups, and long-term focus. This shift was slow, and accelerated back in 2018, the same year that Activision-Blizzard made a record $7.5 billion in revenue.

The new plan saw nearly 900 employees fired across non-game development divisions like marketing and HR. That money was taken and re-allocated into its new four-part plan, which emphasizes games development, live services, mobile ports, and engagement models over all things.

The creator of The Void is launching a VR wingsuit attraction in 2021

Kevin Carbotte | Extended Reality (XR) | Oct 6, 2020 5:51 PM CDT

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to fly in a wingsuit? Most people never get the chance to do that, even if they want to because of the danger and the training involved. But what if you could get the same experience without the inherent risk? At Jump, a new VR attraction opening in 2021, you can!

The creator of The Void is launching a VR wingsuit attraction in 2021

Jump is a location-based entertainment attraction created by James Jensen, one of the co-founders of The Void. The details about the experience are limited, but the company recently started dropping hints about its attraction, and it looks remarkably attractive. As far as we can tell, Jump is a VR base jumping simulator that makes you feel like you're soaring through the air.

The Jump experience includes an authentic wingsuit and a VR headset integrated into a helmet that resembles the type that a base jumper would wear. It's unclear how the simulation makes you feel like you're flying, but it could include a wind tunnel that skydivers often train in or involve an aerial harness. Jim Shumway, the head rigger for Cirque du Soleil, is part of Jump's team, so we're leaning towards the harness idea.

Phil Spencer: We're years away from 8K being a console gaming standard

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 6, 2020 5:31 PM CDT

Microsoft's Phil Spencer delivers a grounded message about 8K gaming on the Series X, saying that it won't be a standard for console games for quite some time.

Phil Spencer: We're years away from 8K being a console gaming standard

8K gaming takes and absolutely ridiculous amount of power. Technically it's possible, and our massive NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 review shows just how demanding gaming actually is--it chews through VRAM and processing power like it's nothing. The world's most powerful dedicated GPU can belt out 8K games at playable FPS, but shines with DLSS on.

The Series X's 12TFLOP GPU is powerful, but it doesn't come close to the RTX 3090. There's very little hope in 8K gaming being feasible on the console; if anything, expect to watch films at 8K resolution. In-game frame rates on 8K displays might dip tremendously and be complemented by big resolution upscaling to match. Thankfully, Microsoft knows 8K is a long ways away for consoles, and Phil Spencer tells consumers and gamers not to expect anything crazy from the next-gen Xbox on 8K TVs.

EA CEO teases new machine learning and AI features for next-gen games

EA's new experimental tech should start showing up in next-gen games, especially in newer titles like Battlefield 6, which will feature massive battlegrounds with dynamically-destructive environments. EA's new SEED R&D has been experimenting with new advanced tech since 2017 and has made major headway with things like the game streaming service Project Atlas.

Now in a recent interview with Protocol, EA CEO Andrew Wilson says other features like higher-end AI and machine learning will make a big difference for next-gen consoles: "What we've seen historically is that the overall strength of the console generation, both in hardware and software, is really built in the first couple of years."

John McAfee arrested for tax evasion, faces up to 30 years in prison

According to unsealed indictment documents filed in June, McAfee has avoided income tax for at least four years. From 2014 to 2018, McAfee was paid millions for various high-profile endeavors including consulting, on-stage events, promotion of cryptocurrency, and even selling his story for a biopic documentary. McAfee faces 10 total counts: 5 for tax evasion and 5 for failing to file income tax. If convicted, McAfee could face maximum charges of up to five years imprisonment for each count of tax evasion (25 years) and 1 year for each count of knowingly failing to file a tax return (5 years), equaling up to 30 years in prison.

The indictment alleges McAfee avoided taxes by channeling these funds to accounts in other people's names, including both cryptocurrency wallets and bank accounts. McAfee also allegedly hid major million-dollar assets from the IRS including vehicles, yachts, and real estate with mock ownership in others' names.

Xbox Game Pass subscribers are playing 40% more games, Microsoft says

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Oct 6, 2020 12:26 PM CDT

Game Pass, the industry's most transformative new subscription service, is having a radical effect on Microsoft's gaming business. It's spiking game sales, improving discovery of titles, and boosting total games played.

Xbox Game Pass subscribers are playing 40% more games, Microsoft says

Game Pass is so big for Microsoft that it's now the center of Xbox. The previous glue--Xbox LIVE--is just part of the infrastructure now, complemented by ancillary delivery mechanisms like Project xCloud and the ecosystem foundation of the storefront and online servers. Game Pass is the heart because it's where the content is stored; If Xbox LIVE and Project xCloud are the veins, Game Pass is the heart that pumps content, or Xbox's lifeblood, through the business model.

Since Game Pass launched in 2017, Microsoft has seen incremental gains in Xbox revenues. The service has been accretive on various levels to the business and as of FY2020, Xbox revenues hit $11.575 billion, the highest point in 6 years. We've heard some impressive stats from Microsoft, too; Game Pass is now at 15 million subscribers and counting. Now key execs are also sharing more important figures, including engagement levels, increases in overall play time, and experimentation.

WHO warns of 'pandemic fatigue', a call for action has been made

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Oct 6, 2020 6:03 AM CDT

An announcement from the World Health Organization (WHO) has been made about what is called "pandemic fatigue".

WHO warns of 'pandemic fatigue', a call for action has been made

According to WHO Europe director Dr. Hans Kluge, European countries have been warned about "pandemic fatigue", which it says poses a threat to how the continent is going to battle the coronavirus pandemic. The WHO head says that this statement is based on "aggregated survey data from countries across the region", and that "In such circumstances it is easy and natural to feel apathetic and demotivated, to experience fatigue."

Additionally, Kluge says that European health authorities should listen to the public and work with them to implement "new and innovative ways" to fight the coronavirus pandemic. Notably, the WHO pointed towards Turkey employing social media polls in an attempt to understand the public's thoughts surrounding the pandemic. If you are interested in reading more about this story, check out this link here.

These Five Quest games are getting updates for Quest 2

Kevin Carbotte | Extended Reality (XR) | Oct 6, 2020 12:22 AM CDT

Oculus is gearing up for the launch of Quest 2 next week and evidently, so are the developers who make Quest content. At least five titles have already received updates with enhancements for the new hardware.

These Five Quest games are getting updates for Quest 2

The Quest 2 headset includes a much more powerful processor than its predecessor. Games that are well optimized for the old hardware should have extra headroom for graphics improvements such as higher resolution textures and real-time lighting effects.

We suspect that many older titles will eventually get Quest 2 enhancements, but at least five games are ready to go ahead of launch day. Arizona Sunshine, Ironlights, Red Matter, Trover Saves the Universe, and Waltz of the Wizard already received updates for Quest 2.

The Batman delayed yet again, new release date of March 4, 2022

Anthony Garreffa | TV, Movies & Home Theatre | Oct 5, 2020 11:26 PM CDT

Warner Bros. has once again delayed The Batman, with its original release of June 25, 2021 pushed out -- then once again when The Batman himself Robert Pattinson was confirmed with COVID-19 -- and now again, into 2022.

The Batman delayed yet again, new release date of March 4, 2022

The Batman had a delayed release scheduled for October 2021 after its push from June 25, 2021 -- and has been delayed now through to March 4, 2022. This is another 6 months out from its October 2021 schedule, while other movies in the DC franchise have been affected, too.

Shazam 2 will now open on June 2, 2023 instead of its original release of November 4, 2022 -- while Black Adam was scheduled for December 22, 2021 and has been removed from WB's calendar entirely, reports Variety.

NVIDIA's CloudXR brings photorealistic VR to mobile headsets

Kevin Carbotte | Extended Reality (XR) | Oct 5, 2020 10:48 PM CDT

NVIDIA this week revealed CloudXR, a cloud streaming service for AR and VR experiences powered by Amazon AWS and NVIDIA RTX technologies. CloudXR gives standalone AR and VR headsets the computational power of Amazon's cloud infrastructure.

NVIDIA's CloudXR brings photorealistic VR to mobile headsets

NVIDIA's CloudXR platform is a content streaming solution for AR, VR, and MR systems. The platform runs off Amazon EC2 P3 and G4 instances powered by NVIDIA RTX V100 and T4 GPUs. With that kind of rendering power, developers can now create photorealistic immersive experiences and deliver them to any OpenVR-compatible XR device, including headsets like the Oculus Quest 2.

CloudXR gives developers more power to work with, which allows for more detailed and realistic virtual environments, but the solution also introduces cost savings for businesses.

AMD's next-gen RDNA 2 cards rumored to have 'Infinity Cache' tech

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Oct 5, 2020 9:44 PM CDT

It has been rumored before, but it appears AMD will have some aces up its sleeve with its next-gen RDNA 2 architecture in the form of Infinity Cache that should appear with the Radeon RX 6900 XT and the rest of the Big Navi GPU family.

AMD's next-gen RDNA 2 cards rumored to have 'Infinity Cache' tech

What is Infinity Cache? Well, it is reportedly a special cache that is connected to the memory subsystem on the next-gen Radeon RX 6000 series graphics cards. AMD registered the trademark for Infinity Cache a few days ago, seemingly confirming that it is coming with Big Navi.

Infinity Cache is close to the Infinity Fabric that AMD uses on its Zen CPUs, which is their in-house interconnect system architecture for CPU and GPU cores. We should expect Infinity Cache to be a new technology deployed as a super-fast cache that helps the slow-on-paper 256-bit memory bus and slow-on-paper GDDR6.

Google killed Daydream a year ago but Android 11 wipes it away

Kevin Carbotte | Extended Reality (XR) | Oct 5, 2020 9:12 PM CDT

Google's Daydream VR platform was a short-lived attempt at tackling the mobile VR market. Google launched the platform in late 2016 and stopped supporting it in late 2019. Google Daydream was already dead, but Android 11 eliminates it.

Google killed Daydream a year ago but Android 11 wipes it away

Hat tip to Android Police for spotting the change in the Android 11 release notes. The latest version of Google's mobile operating system doesn't offer any support for Google's past VR platform.

The lack of Daydream support in the latest Android release shouldn't be a big surprise. Google officially abandoned Daydream VR in October 2019, and the Pixel 4 smartphone lineup was not "Daydream certified." None of the 2019 Android smartphones are certified for Daydream. Though, you could still use an older phone to access the Daydream library.

So, NVIDIA has just said GeForce RTX 30 shortages will last until 2021

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Oct 5, 2020 8:07 PM CDT

Over a month ago I wrote an exclusive story saying that NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 series cards would have "tight supply" until the end of the year. Well, NVIDIA has just confirmed that.

So, NVIDIA has just said GeForce RTX 30 shortages will last until 2021

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang explained that we will see massive global shortages for the GeForce RTX 3090 and GeForce RTX 3080 (and I'm sure RTX 3070 once it launches) through until the end of the year, and into 2021.

Jensen explained: "I believe that demand will outstrip all of our supply through the year. Remember, we're also going into the double-whammy. The double-whammy is the holiday season. Even before the holiday season, we were doing incredibly well, and then you add on top of it the 'Ampere factor,' and then you add on top of that the 'Ampere holiday factor,' and we're going to have a really really big Q4 season".

Leadtek reveals GeForce RTX 3090 WinFast Hurricane graphics card

Leadtek is a brand most have forgotten, but man -- I remember owning the Leadtek GeForce4 Ti 4400 WinFast graphics card back in the day -- but check this out:

Leadtek reveals GeForce RTX 3090 WinFast Hurricane graphics card

Say hello to the Leadtek GeForce RTX 3090 WinFast Hurricane, a new custom RTX 3090 that ships with a huge triple-slot, triple-fan cooler. Leadtek appears to be using a semi-custom design that sees the RTX 3090 WinFast Hurricane packing a PCB that looks like the reference RTX 3090 board.

The triple-fan cooler keeps a full copper GPU cooler base and thick aluminum heat sink with 6 x 6mm heat pipes nice and cool, although Leadtek is shipping its new custom GeForce RTX 3090 WinFast Hurricane graphics card with no factory overclock, but is 15MHz above reference RTX 3090 specs with its 1410/1695MHz base and boost GPU clocks, respectively.
