Sony uses its huge Crystal LED display as virtual set backgrounds

Anthony Garreffa | Displays | Jan 7, 2021 9:50 PM CST

Sony has just found a new home for its kick ass Crystal LED display technology, something that the company is doing similar to Samsung's MicroLED technology and its modular nature -- Sony is doing it in their own way.

Sony uses its huge Crystal LED display as virtual set backgrounds

Sony's big push for 2021 is the modular bezel-free Crystal LED that can be used to build virtual backgrounds for virtual sets on productions like The Mandalorian. There are two versions of the screen that Sony sells, the high-resolution "Reality Creation" is done with HDR, 3D and even 120FPS support.

The two variants that Sony have are the C- and B-series which are tuned for either 1,000,000:1 high contrast or high brightness, respectively. The 1,800 cd/m2-capable B-series Sony Crystal LED display was developed in collaboration with Sony Pictures specifically for the use as a studio backdrop that wouldn't show reflections.

LG has just unveiled its next-gen 2021 Gram family of laptops, with the new Gram 17, Gram 16, Gram 14, Gram 2-in-1 16 and Gram 2-in-1 14 -- all of which include a 16:10 aspect ratio display.

The new flagship LG Gram 17 has its 17-inch panel packing a delicious 2560 x 1600 resolution panel (the same resolution as the Gram 16) at 60Hz. Inside, you'll find an Intel 11th Gen Core CPU and Intel Iris Xe GPU. There's an offer of either 8GB or 16GB of LPDDR4x memory, dual NVMe M.2 SSD slots, and plenty of connectivity.

But LG is making things portable here with the Gram family of laptops, including the Gram 17 that has a huge 17-inch laptop but weighs just 2.98lbs (1.35kg). Pretty incredible considering you have a large 17-inch laptop in your hands, that is also super-thin, too.

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Jan 7, 2021 7:46 PM CST

Samsung's next-gen Exynos SoC in late 2021: 8K 60FPS video recording

Not only will these new Samsung Exynos processors and most likely what will turn out to be the next-gen Galaxy S22 Ultra smartphone in 2022, will pack 8K 60FPS video recording abilities. 8K 60FPS is already pretty mind blowing on its own, but the new Exynos processor will also open up the pathway to 4K 120FPS video recording, which is another feat on its own.

Better yet... the next-gen Samsung Exynos processor is meant to be the Exynos 9855 which will feature an AMD GPU. Back in June 2019, AMD and Samsung announced a new multi-year strategic partnership that would see a future where the AMD RDNA architecture would be inside of Samsung's next-gen Exynos chips.

Microsoft's Edge browser gets History and Tab Sync features in 2021

Microsoft has just begun pushing out its new Edge browser update, which adds history and tab sync to the browser going into 2021.

The roll out of the new Edge features will spread throughout the world over the coming weeks, but if you want to see if you've got it already then visit Settings > Profiles > Sync and then enable "History" and "Open tabs" for the new Edge abilities.

Edge launched back on January 15, 2020 -- if you can believe it, it feels like longer than that -- launching without a Sync option... for some reason. Microsoft launched Extensions in May 2020, promising the history and tab sync would be here by the end of the year but they didn't make it.

Roblox's value grows 700% to staggering $29.5 billion

Roblox is a juggernaut that has grown significantly in just one year's time. Following a successful half-billion funding round, Roblox Corp. is now worth an estimated $29.5 billion. This represents an astronomical 700% raise in market value in just 11 months. The game regularly makes billions every year from in-game monetization, and pulled in over $1 billion on mobile in 2020. Exact 2020 revenues are unknown as Roblox Corp. is a private company that doesn't publish results. That will change soon when the company goes public with a direct stock listing.

Twitch removes its best-known emote over political controversy

Twitch has permanently removed the iconic 11-year-old pogchamp emote due to controversial statements from streamer Ryan "Gootecks" Gutierrez.

Twitch removes its best-known emote over political controversy

If you've ever chatted on Twitch, you've probably seen the pogchamp emote pop up on nearly every stream--especially game reveals. That's about to change forever. In response to Gootecks' recent Twitter posts concerning the recent Capitol Hill invasions, Twitch has yanked pogchamp off the service and laid rest to an entire era of streaming.

"We've made the decision to remove the PogChamp emote following statements from the face of the emote encouraging further violence after what took place in the Capitol today," Twitch said. "We want the sentiment and use of Pog to live on - its meaning is much bigger than the person depicted or image itself- and it has a big place in Twitch culture. However, we can't in good conscience continue to enable use of the image."

Cyberpunk 2077 developer leak was entirely fake, CD Projekt RED says

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jan 7, 2021 4:39 PM CST

Remember that huge 4Chan post that "sourced" a game developer from CD Projekt RED? Yeah, that was totally fake.

Cyberpunk 2077 developer leak was entirely fake, CD Projekt RED says

CD Projekt RED has officially debunked a shady new 4Chan rumor that made some bold claims. The poster claimed to be an anonymous CDPR developer and talked about CD Projekt's plans for future patches and discussed internal issues during Cyberpunk 2077's tumultuous development. The post is filled with a laundry list of tidbits, including how the code for the PS4 and Xbox One versions are being completely rewritten for a June 2021 launch. Oh, and they also claimed Johnny Silverhand was originally based on David Hayter's Snake, and that he was much cooler before Keanu.

The poster also says the disastrous launch was "beneficial." CD Projekt's legal department would probably beg to differ--the company has lots of enraged investors and is being sued by four U.S.-based law firms.

Faceobok imposed the new restrictions on Donald Trump for 24 hours citing "two policy violations", with Facebook saying in a statement: "We've assessed two policy violations against President Trump's Page which will result in a 24-hour feature block, meaning he will lose the ability to post on the platform during that time".

An Instagram executive said that the Facebook ban would extend to President Trump and his Instagram account, since Facebook owns Instagram. In an earlier statement, Facebook said they were "appalled by the violence at the Capitol" and "treating these events as an emergency".

Panasonic is testing delivery robots in Japan, could be the future

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Jan 7, 2021 1:08 AM CST

Japan always feels like it is the country where these types of things from the future should be tested first, with Panasonic testing the public acceptance of delivery robots in a Japanese "smart town".

Panasonic is testing delivery robots in Japan, could be the future

The first phase of this self-driving robot delivery system on public roads began in November 2020, and continued through the end of 2020. The second phase will begin in February 2021, in just a few weeks -- where the robots will begin delivering goods into residents in the area where Panasonic can "test the acceptability of the new delivery service experience".

Panasonic's new delivery robot will roll through neighborhoods at up to 2.5 miles per hour, or 4 kilometres per hour. They will be monitored remotely by human operators at a control center, who will take over if required -- but without them, the delivery robots are doing it all on their own.

On the 3rd, the development team released a clip showing off the lighting effects in action. The IDtech 4 game engine that powers Doom 3 is nearly a decade and a half old, but it still produces terrific visuals. You can expect to pay $150,000 for Samsung's huge 110-inch MicroLED TV

Anthony Garreffa | Displays | Jan 7, 2021 12:01 AM CST

Samsung has just launched its MicroLED-based TV to regular consumers, and not just to millionaires and members of royal families that could spend $300,000+ on a gigantic TV.

You can expect to pay $150,000 for Samsung's huge 110-inch MicroLED TV

But now us mere mortals can buy Samsung's amazing MicroLED TV that is smaller than last year's iteration in the form of The Wall TV, which measured in at a retina-busting 292-inch in size... the new 2021 version is a MicroLED TV in fixed sizes of 110-inch, 99-inch, and 88-inch. They're cheaper, but they're still going to run you some serious Benjamins.

Samsung has launched the consumer-focused The Wall TVs in South Korea already, with the 110-inch MicroLED TV costing around $156,000 -- but there are now a 99-inch and 88-inch version, which should be closer to maybe $100,000 for the 99-inch, and maybe $75,000 for the 88-inch... but I'm just spit-balling here.

Quest 2 brought more women into VR than any other Oculus headset

Kevin Carbotte | Extended Reality (XR) | Jan 6, 2021 11:46 PM CST

Facebook said that the Oculus Quest 2 had brought more women into VR than any of its previous headsets. The standalone VR system is also selling far better than the original Quest headset.

Quest 2 brought more women into VR than any other Oculus headset

It is no surprise that Quest 2 is a big hit for Oculus. The headset has sold incredibly well, with developers announcing shortly after the headset's release that they were seeing all-time high sales numbers for their games. Chris Pruett, an executive at Facebook Reality Labs, said in October that sales exceeded company expectations. Mark Zuckerberg later confirmed that five times as many people pre-ordered Quest 2 than the original Oculus Quest.

Facebook today revealed that it took less than seven weeks for Quest 2's monthly active user numbers to surpass the userbase of the first Quest, which hit the market a year and a half prior. It's safe to say that Quest 2 is a big seller. And given the reaction from many developers after the holidays, it's likely that the active user base is much higher now than it was seven weeks after Quest 2 launched.
