After the Fall is a 4-player co-op survival shooter from Vertigo Games

Kevin Carbotte | Extended Reality (XR) | Mar 3, 2021 9:47 PM CST

Vertigo Games, the studio that created the smash hit Arizona Sunshine, is gearing up to release its next title. After the Fall, a post-apocalyptic co-op survival shooter is coming to VR platforms this summer.

After the Fall is a 4-player co-op survival shooter from Vertigo Games

From the name, you may expect that After the Fall is a sequel to Arizona Sunshine, but that's not the case. This is a completely new game with a completely different feel. Arizona Sunshine was a solo or co-op campaign set in a modern zombie-infested world. After the Fall is a fast-paced 4-player co-op game, like Left4Dead, set in a post-apocalyptic downtown LA overrun by undead creators called snowbreed.

Vertigo Games plans to support multiple VR platforms. The game will launch on PlayStation VR, PC VR, and "as yet unannounced headsets" with full cross-platform support between different platforms.

GALAX GeForce RTX 3090 HOF benched with insane 1000W custom BIOS

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Mar 3, 2021 9:07 PM CST

GALAX has unleashed its new GeForce RTX 3090 HOF (Hall of Fame) graphics cards to the, well probably 3 people on the planet that were able to buy them -- but one Chinese overclocker has slapped an insane 1000W custom BIOS on his card.

GALAX GeForce RTX 3090 HOF benched with insane 1000W custom BIOS

The custom GALAX GeForce RTX 3090 HOF graphics card was tuned and overclocked by Chinese YouTube channel 二斤自制, where there is a lengthy review you can read, too. The card was installed into an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X test bench with GALAX DDR4-4400MHz, a HOF 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD, and a high-end Corsair AX1500i PSU.

But where things go to another level is that a custom BIOS was flashed onto the GALAX GeForce RTX 3090 HOF, upping its stock 420W BIOS with what appears to be the custom XOC 1000W BIOS from EVGA and their GeForce RTX 3090 Kingpin graphics card.

Doom 3 is coming to PlayStation VR at the end of the month

Kevin Carbotte | Extended Reality (XR) | Mar 3, 2021 7:00 PM CST

id Software is re-releasing one of its iconic classics for a new generation of gamers to experience. But this time, it will be more immersive than ever. Doom 3 is coming to PlayStation VR at the end of the month.

Doom 3 is coming to PlayStation VR at the end of the month

Sony today revealed Doom 3: VR Edition, a PlayStation VR exclusive version of id Software's 16-year-old Doom title. The VR Edition is a remake of the entire Doom 3 game, including the two expansion packs; Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Mission.

This isn't the first time we've seen Doom 3 in VR. In January, a modded version of Doom 3 landed on the SideQuest marketplace, allowing you to play Doom 3 on the Oculus Quest. The PSVR version is an official port from the original developer, and as such, it received a bit of a graphics overhaul for the PSVR release. id improved the textures, shaders, and sound effects to take advantage of modern graphics advancements.

AXLE's 'custom' GeForce RTX 3090 Founders Edition rocks new sticker

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Mar 3, 2021 6:30 PM CST

NVIDIA's own GeForce RTX 3090 Founders Edition was a popular card for its unique style, but now we have AXLE and its "custom" GeForce RTX 3090 CLASSIC graphics card that has a sticker on it.

AXLE's 'custom' GeForce RTX 3090 Founders Edition rocks new sticker

We don't know if AXLE is allowed to customize the Founders Edition as I'm sure NVIDIA wouldn't allow that, so as VideoCardz points out and I will too -- this could be a mistake by AXLE. The listing itself is identical to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Founders Edition but with a sticker on the fan (on both the front and the back).

I doubt that we'll even see AXLE release its GeForce RTX 3090 CLASSIC as NVIDIA itself, nor does anyone else around the world, have any significant numbers of GeForce RTX 3090 Founders Edition graphics cards laying around.

Resident Evil VIIlage possibly delayed a month to June 22

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 3, 2021 10:33 AM CST

It appears COVID-19 delay season has struck again, this time afflicting Capcom's latest mainline Resident Evil game.

Resident Evil VIIlage possibly delayed a month to June 22

Resident Evil 8 Village has been delayed from its original May 7 launch day to June 22, the latest April issue of Edge magazine says. The news was spotted on Twitter and could be a typo, or it could be a way to future-proof the printed materials ahead of an official Capcom announcement.

No details have been confirmed just yet and Capcom still lists the previously announced May 7 release date for RE8.

These images show human garbage being scattered all over Mars

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Mar 3, 2021 6:34 AM CST

It was only a few weeks ago that NASA successfully landed its brand new rover on Mars. Perseverance has touched down and is snapping incredible images.

These images show human garbage being scattered all over Mars

Engineers are currently running multiple tests for each of the instruments equipped to Perseverance. While these tests are being conducted, a close-by vehicle has snapped some sneaky shots of Perseverance.

The ESA-Roscosmos Trace Gas Orbiter, which is a satellite apart of the ExoMars mission between the ESA and Russian space agency, snapped some shots of Perseverance sitting in the Jezero Crater only days after it touched down. The descent of Perseverance was technical and required many different parts of discardable machinery to ensure it landed safely.

You have never seen the surface of Mars like you have in these images

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Mar 3, 2021 5:35 AM CST

On February 18th, NASA successfully landed its Perseverance rover on Mars, and now the rover is sending back astonishing images of the barren Red Planet.

You have never seen the surface of Mars like you have in these images

Mars has never been captured like it has in these images, and just last week, NASA released a few images that Perseverance snapped while performing instrument testing. The images were captured using the rover's Mastcam-Z camera system and show the barren 28-mile wide Jezero Crater where it landed.

Researchers believe that this crater was once home to a river delta billions of years ago, which has led researchers to think that microbial life still might remain there, hence rover landing in this location. Jim Bell, the principal investigator for the rover's Mastcam-Z instruments, said, "Mastcam-Z will be the main eyes of NASA's next Mars rover." For more information, check out this link here.

Diablo II Resurrected's first alpha test is singleplayer-only

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 2, 2021 6:18 PM CST

The new Diablo II Resurrected remaster will actually be separated into two test phases for multiplayer and singleplayer.

Diablo II Resurrected's first alpha test is singleplayer-only

Everyone wants to jump back into Sanctuary and replay Diablo II Resurrected. Luckily, Blizzard is holding multiple technical alpha tests for the game, but we don't actually know when they'll take place or when invites are being sent out. But we do know there will be two tests: A singleplayer-only test that comes first, followed by a multiplayer test that stresses the new online Battle.net infrastructure.

"We're going to start with a single-player technical alpha, and then we'll have a second technical alpha after that, which is kind of multiplayer and stress testing," lead producer Chris Lena told PCGamesN.

Sony patents banana controller, Donkey Kong would approve

A newly published Sony patent uses unique AR sensor technology to create controllers and peripherals out of everyday objects--including bananas.

Sony patents banana controller, Donkey Kong would approve

Sony's new patent is rather bizarre and incredibly innovative. The patent is quite technical, but the gist of it is centered around VR/AR sensor device that essentially scans an object and uses machine learning not only to identify it, but use six-dimensional pose estimation to translate it into a peripheral. Theoretically this would allow gamers to use everyday household things like bananas to interact with and control video games.

FIG. 3 shows schematically an example of a video image of a banana being used as a video games controller;

Halo Infinite is basically an RPG, but it won't have crafting systems

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 2, 2021 5:05 PM CST

Halo Infinite is basically a first-person shooter/RPG mashup with lots of replayability, but it thankfully won't feature any crafting systems.

Halo Infinite is basically an RPG, but it won't have crafting systems

Halo Infinite isn't just a game, but a platform that sets up the future of all Halo games. Infinite isn't just a name--it's a description of the game's emphasis on near-infinite replayability. That's why the sequel features open-ended exploration with a map screen straight out of a Ubisoft game, as well as upgrades. 343i wants to focus on engaging players and that means certain hooks are added, including online co-op, replayable missions, and discoveries in an open world. There's just one element that won't be included: crafting.

In a recent Halo Waypoint post, creative director Joseph Staten confirms Infinite won't have crafting. You won't spend time killing creatures in a never-ending quest for materials. The gameplay loop is predicated on action, not inane tedium or upgrade paths similar to Assassin's Creed Valhalla.

Alien Left 4 Dead-style shooter is what Colonial Marines shouldve been

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 2, 2021 4:22 PM CST

We've been reporting on Cold Iron's new Alien game for years now, and today it was finally revealed. Introducing Aliens: Fireteam, a new third-person co-op shooter that combines Left 4 Dead survival with Gears of War-style combat.

Alien Left 4 Dead-style shooter is what Colonial Marines shouldve been

Aliens: Fireteam is a co-op third-person shooter where you take on hordes of merciless xenomorphs across four interwoven story arcs. Gamers can make their own marine across five different classes (Gunner, Demolisher, Technician, Doc and Recon) complete with special class abilities, RPG-style perk unlocks and buffs, 30+ weapon types including the iconic pulse rifle and 70+ modifications to adjust your strategies, and other customizations. Cold Iron previously reported the game would be an MMO, but the new trailer suggests co-op sessions are locked to up to 4-player fireteams.

Combat looks enthralling and mirrors Gears of War's brutal third-person shooter action. The devs promise over 20 variations of enemies, including 10 different xenomorph breeds like facehuggers, Praetorians, spitters, warriors and bursters , the creepy Weyland-Yutani synths from Alien Isolation, and other surprises. This is a live game with a strong emphasis on replayability and will have lots of recurring missions and objectives alongside a mainline campaign.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake 2 to flex PS5's power, UE5 upgrades possible

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 2, 2021 3:32 PM CST

Square Enix is always on the forefront of next-gen technology and has showcased its prowess with some amazing tech demos. Now with the advent of PS5 and Xbox Series X console power, their talent can finally be unleashed, and we should see some big jumps in performance and quality with future games like Project Athia, Final Fantasy 16, and the anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Remake's second chapter.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake 2 to flex PS5's power, UE5 upgrades possible

Although Final Fantasy 7 Remake is getting re-released for the PS5 with upgrades like faster loading times, improved 4K textures/lighting, and a 60FPS mode, the game was built for the PS4 first. Square Enix didn't build the game from scratch specifically for the PlayStation 5. That'll change with Final Fantasy 7 Remake 2.

The developer confirms the next chapter will be made specifically for the next-gen PS5 and will push the hardware to new heights, likely with new optimizations like ray-traced reflections and lighting. Since FF7R was made in Unreal Engine 4, it's possible the second game could utilize Unreal Engine 5's new Lumen lighting and Nanite texture technologies.

Sony could make its own Netflix-style TV and film subscription service

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 2, 2021 2:33 PM CST

Sony today announced it will stop renting and selling movies and TV shows on the PlayStation Store in 2021, one of the most widely-accessed digital marketplaces on the internet. It's possible Sony is preparing a new subscription-based streaming service for its own content brand.

Sony could make its own Netflix-style TV and film subscription service

In August, PlayStation owners will no longer be able to rent or buy TV shows or films on the PlayStation Store. On-demand content purchases will be discontinued. Sony says its closing this part of its business because most consumers are using subscriptions and streaming. This is a strange move considering Sony has its own entertainment production group (Sony Pictures Motion Group), and its content is sold on the PS Store. Removing this avenue of sales potential strongly hints Sony is following the consumer shift towards recurring subscriptions with its own bundled streaming offering.

Sony could replace this video storefront with its own Netflix-style all-you-can-streaming service. The company has a wealthy vault of content it could bundle into such a service. Sony Pictures Motion Group commands over 4,000 films, and Sony Pictures Television has roughly 270 shows in its catalog. Sony also has PlayStation Productions, a new label that will adapt key video game franchises into TV shows, starting with Twisted Metal.

Epic Games buys another huge indie dev in plan for gaming dominance

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Mar 2, 2021 1:48 PM CST

Epic Games has bought Fall Guys developer Mediatonic for an undisclosed sum, solidifying the gaming titan's stable of talent.

Epic Games buys another huge indie dev in plan for gaming dominance

Like Embracer and Microsoft, Epic Games is making big power acquisitions. First they bought Rocket League dev Psyonix in 2019, snapping up one of the most lucrative free-to-play games in the industry. Now they've bought Fall Guys, a massively strategic purchase that'll deliver untold engagement and monetization across multiple platforms.

For Epic , the timing couldn't be better. Fall Guys is about to cross over to every major games platform on the market, offering lots of microtransaction earnings potential. On the developer's side, nothing is changing at Mediatonic: Everyone will keep their jobs, and the devs now get the backing of a $17 billion dollar company. Fall Guys isn't being removed from Steam (yet?) and free content is still on the way.

Palit working on 12 different NVIDIA Pascal P106 mining GPUs

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Mar 1, 2021 10:30 PM CST

Palit has just registered 12 new P106-based mining cards with the EEC (Eurasian Economic Commission) where they will be bringing the Pascal GPU architecture and the P106 back to market as crypto mining cards.

Palit working on 12 different NVIDIA Pascal P106 mining GPUs

It looks like Palit is working on a few different models with varying amounts of CUDA cores and VRAM counts, with the higher-end P106-100 GPU packing 1280 CUDA cores and 6GB of GDDR5 memory while the cut-down P106-90 packs 640 CUDA cores and 3GB of GDDR5 memory.

The lower-end Palit P106-90 mining card wouldn't be any good for Ethereum mining as the DAG is 4.11GB and there's only 3GB of GDDR5 available. This doesn't mean it's useless for crypto mining, far from it -- it's just useless for mining Ethereum.

Could the next Oculus headset be a Quest Pro? It could be!

Kevin Carbotte | Extended Reality (XR) | Mar 1, 2021 9:59 PM CST

Last week, Andrew "Boz" Bosworth hinted that Oculus could be building a higher-end version of the Quest that would come in at a higher price but with better specifications.

Could the next Oculus headset be a Quest Pro? It could be!

Facebook has been a leader in the VR industry ever since it threw down billions of dollars to buy Oculus in 2014. Mark Zuckerberg is famously bullish on VR, indicating on multiple occasions that he believes VR is the next great computing platform. He has also repeatedly stated that he's going after the mass market, which means focusing on lowering the barrier to entry and making VR devices affordable for the masses.

When asked about the possibility of making a Quest Pro that sells at a higher price point, Bosworth said he thought the idea was "interesting" and gave a bit of a smile and a wink. While that is far from a confirmation, the idea that Facebook could be building a higher-end Quest falls in line with Mark Zuckerberg's comments during a recent Facebook earnings call about his company's current work on headset development.

The Oculus Quest development roadmap suggests 120Hz coming soon

Kevin Carbotte | Extended Reality (XR) | Mar 1, 2021 8:58 PM CST

The Oculus Quest could be getting a new update this month that enables the screen to run at up to 120Hz. That would mark the second time Oculus increased the refresh rate of its mobile VR device.

The Oculus Quest development roadmap suggests 120Hz coming soon

Oculus released the Quest 2 in October 2020, and when it hit the market, the displays in the device operated at 72Hz. At launch, the company said that 90Hz would be supported, and true to its word, the 90Hz update rolled out in time for Christmas. At the time, John Carmack gave developers are warning that they should not set their games to operate at the highest refresh rate available, as future increases were on the table.

As recently as mid-February, Andrew "Boz" Bosworth, Head of Facebook Reality Labs, gave a literal thumbs-up to a question about Oculus Quest getting 120Hz support that he received during an Instagram-based Q&A session. Facebook's Quest development roadmap reveals that the feature is scheduled to roll out later this month.
