New Splinter Cell possibly coming at E3

| Mar 13, 2018 3:11 PM CDT

A possible leak on Amazon's storefront hints Ubisoft could continue its infamous stealth action series.

New Splinter Cell possibly coming at E3

After five years, Ubisoft may be making another Splinter Cell game--at least that's what a now defunct listing on Amazon Canada leads us to believe. The listing specifically mentioned "E3 Splinter Cell" and called the game "Splinter Cell 2018" with Ubisoft's name attached.

This move makes a lot of sense for the French games-maker, especially considering the company is strongly focused on its wholly-owned IPs (ie Tom Clancy games/IPs). The company recently said it plans to ship 4 AAA games in the upcoming fiscal year so it's possible a new Splinter Cell is among these games.

Analysts: spending on Nintendo products to beat Xbox in 2018

| Mar 12, 2018 5:21 PM CDT

Based on explosive sales of the Nintendo Switch and strong software attach rates, analyst firm IHS Markit predicts Nintendo will actually outpace Microsoft's Xbox division in terms of product sales and services.

Analysts: spending on Nintendo products to beat Xbox in 2018

With the Switch, Nintendo is back in the game, so to speak: the console has propelled the games-maker to its former glory with monumental sales and global acclaim. Before the Switch the console gaming space was dominated by the PS4 vs Xbox One battle--a battle which Microsoft was losing--but now Nintendo will push Xbox to the third spot...at least that's what IHS Markit predicts.

According to recent data released by the firm, Nintendo is expected to rake in about $11 billion in hardware, games, and services revenue in 2018, whereas Microsoft is predicted to pull in around $8 billion or so in combined gaming earnings.

Final Fantasy VII Remake team expands to boost game quality

| Mar 12, 2018 3:09 PM CDT

Square Enix is currently hiring a level planner for its massive new Final Fantasy VII: Remake project.

Final Fantasy VII Remake team expands to boost game quality

Final Fantasy VII: Remake has been in development for a while now, and the game is actually taking shape quite nicely, but the Japanese games publisher Square Enix wants to make it absolutely incredible. That's why it's in a hiring phase for new devs in a bid to expand its team and bolster talent. It's also very likely that Final Fantasy XV's dev tools and procedures are bleeding into the project, as FFXV Game Director Hajime Tabata said his developers have become "tougher and faster" because of internal pressure.

"FF VII REMAKE has all functions and contents implemented," reads the job listing. "We are constantly examining the program within the development team, but while it is satisfying to say that the original is reproduced with high quality graphics, We have reached the conclusion that we should aim for a step further in quality so that can meet the expectations of fans."

Xbox LIVE game mod service might happen

| Mar 12, 2018 12:13 PM CDT

Microsoft's new job listing suggests a game mod hosting service is coming to Xbox LIVE.

Xbox LIVE game mod service might happen

Mods have been proven to drive engagement across the board--not only do they considerably lengthen a game's life cycle, but in the case of Minecraft's community storefront, they can actually make money too. If it's one thing Microsoft loves, it's the billion dollar industry of engagement (Activision, EA, Ubisoft and Sony too).

A new Microsoft job listing affirms that the company is keen on building a mod service right into Xbox LIVE, which hints that future first-party Xbox games could have monetized mod storefronts baked into the online platform. Since most of Microsoft's first-party games have live services for maximum engagement, it's likely that this plan will mesh neatly with its current roadmap.

Mass Effect writer Drew Karpyshyn leaves BioWare once more

| Mar 12, 2018 10:22 AM CDT

Drew Karpyshyn, who's best known for helping write some of BioWare's most beloved series such as Mass Effect, has left the studio once more to pursue other endeavors.

Mass Effect writer Drew Karpyshyn leaves BioWare once more

In a recent blog post, Karpyshyn says he left BioWare in order to focus on his own freelance work, which includes making games at a studio called Fogbank Games as well as continuing his novel series. This marks the second time the writer has left the Edmonton-based game dev; the first was in 2012 for many of the same reasons, but Karpyshyn came back in 2015 to help write Star Wars: The Old Republic and work on BioWare's massively ambitious new IP Anthem.

Anthem was recently moved to calendar Q1 2019 by Electronic Arts, and Karpyshyn's departure strongly hints that his role in the game has been wrapped up. Or, of course, BioWare is using a team of writers to make their huge new live service game (which is likely too).

Days Gone delayed to 2019

| Mar 10, 2018 6:05 PM CST

Sony Bend's new zombie survival game Days Gone has been delayed into next year, Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed.

Days Gone delayed to 2019

Speculation started when Days Gone's official game page was updated to a 2019 release, and now Sony verified the push back to various outlets. The company gave no reason behind the delay, ie that Sony Bend needed more time to optimize or polish, but it's not always as simple--Sony might've needed to fill a hole in its games lineup or the studio actually needed more time, or both.

Starting in FY2018, Sony says it will focus even more on strong first-party games in a bid to improve the PlayStation ecosystem's attractiveness to new and existing gamers. We may get specifics when the company outlines its new Mid-Year plan in the coming months, and maybe even some clues on the upcoming PlayStation 5 console to boot.

Xbox One X FreeSync testing begins next week

During the newly brought back Xbox Insider show Major Nelson announced that FreeSync would arrive on both Xbox One S and Xbox One X consoles next week for members of the insider alpha program. We've known for quite some time that the Xbox One X supports FreeSync/FreeSync 2 and HDMI 2.1, but up until now the features, which help synchronize the display's and console's refresh rates for smoother gaming, haven't really been discussed too much. But now Microsoft breaks that silence.

"Starting next week users in the Xbox Insider alpha ring will be able to play on AMD Radeon FreeSync displays for variable refresh output on Xbox One X and Xbox One S," Xbox's Larry Hryb said during the broadcast.

We've known for a long time that Bethesda Game Studios is working on "two big and crazy projects" that are "totally different" than anything they've done before, and that The Elder Scrolls VI will indeed happen (just not for a long time). Valve is working on totally new games according to founder and PCMR figure Gabe Newell, with GabeN saying that Valve is getting back into making new games after its current fleet of multiplayer games.

Gabe Newell says Valve is currently making NEW games

Valve has been heavily focused on Steam and hardware over the last few years, stretching as far as getting knee deep in one of the best VR headsets on the market with the HTC Vive, but Gabe explained this as "an investment in the future". Newell added: "Artifact is the first of several games that are going to be coming from us. So that's sort of good news. Hooray! Valve's going to start shipping games again".

Artifact is a new Dota 2-themed card game that Valve has been working on, but it isn't the only new game the company has been developing. During the Reddit AMA back in January 2017, Newell said that Valve is working on at least one other fully-fledged singleplayer game.
