Black Ops 4 Blackout battle royale starts at 80 players

| Sep 4, 2018 3:20 PM CDT

Black Ops 4 may not support 100 player chaos in its new battle royale mode, putting it behind competitors like Fortnite and PUBG...but it will have zombies.

Black Ops 4 Blackout battle royale starts at 80 players

Today Treyarch recently confirmed that Black Ops 4's Blackout battle royale will be capped at 80 players during the beta. "80 at the beta and we'll go from there," Treyarch design director David Vonderhaar said in a Game Informer interview. This is up from Battlefield V's 64-player Firestorm battle royale mode.

Blackout will see tons of classic Treyarch characters and content mashed together in an explosive FPS wrapper. Everything from destructive vehicles to AI-driven zombie hordes will be added to the mix for absolute chaos across the biggest Black Ops map to date. Vonderhaar revealed a bunch of new details about Blackout in the interview, showing just how much effort the studio is putting into this new engagement-driven mode.

Battlefield V battle royale: 64 players, team-based

| Sep 4, 2018 2:10 PM CDT

Today DICE reveals more details about Firestorm, Battlefield V's new battle royale mode.

Battlefield V battle royale: 64 players, team-based

Battlefield V's BR mode is actually team-based rather than free-for-all and has a max of 64-players on a massive in-game map. "In Firestorm, 16 teams of four will fight it out to become the last squad standing on the largest Battlefield map ever: a sandbox filled with destructible buildings, weaponry, and vehicles. This is royale done the Battlefield way," DICE said in a new video. Interestingly enough DICE won't be making the battle royale mode.

"Multiplayer will deliver all-out warfare with unrivaled intensity and scale across eight multiplayer modes."

Middle-Earth Enterprises teams up for new LOTR free MMORPG

For those that don't know, Middle-Earth Enterprises owns all of the exclusive world-wide rights to Tolkeins Legendarium, this includes all rights to motion picture, merchandising, stage pieces and all literary works from J.R.R Tolkein. According to the announcement from Athlon Games, the developer has partnered with Middle-Earth Enterprises to bring gamers a completely free-to-play MMORPG based in the world of Middle-Earth.

The motives behind this decision are from the owners of Athlon Games, Leyou Technologies Holdings Limited ( the "Company"). The Company and "the Board believes that the development and publishing of this new title based on The Lord of the Rings will help further the Group's goal of creating top quality console and PC games that have global appeal and expand the Group's footprint in the West." Unfortunately, there is no further information on the title, hopefully as we progress throughout the rest of the year we hear more about the future Middle-Earth themed free-to-play MMORPG. Rayman doesn't come to Smash Ultimate, instead Brawlhalla

| Sep 4, 2018 4:00 AM CDT

Blue Mammoth Studios, the developers behind Brawlhalla have announced that their title will be getting a very iconic cross-over character from its publisher Ubisoft. Introducing Rayman, it appears he will be playable in Brawlhalla but could this mean we won't see him debut to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate?

Rayman doesn't come to Smash Ultimate, instead Brawlhalla

During Ubisoft's PAX East stream, it was revealed that Rayman would be making his debut to Brawlhalla's fighting roster. Rayman will be apart of the games release onto the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch on November 6th. From the above video, we can see Matt Woomer, Managing Director at Blue Mammoth Games announce the good news, he not only seems quite excited to reveal the news to everyone but also proud that his company now has such an iconic character featured in one of their games.

The initial announcement though was overall quite disappointing, the build up from Woomer was the most suspense we got in terms of teasing the character. We also did not see any gameplay and was only shown a still image of Rayman. Being a fighting game enthusiast, when a new character is released regardless of how iconic they already are I want to see gameplay of them in action, I want to see the moves of the character no matter what they might be. The Rayman release is only a month away and leading into the launch I hope that both Ubisoft and Blue Mammoth Games do Rayman some justice and showcase his fighting style to players.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider screenshots leak: A young Lara?

| Sep 4, 2018 3:00 AM CDT

Shadow of the Tomb Raider releases just 10 days from now and as players gear up for the launch some new screenshots have leaked online. It appears players will be able to experience a young Lara Croft.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider screenshots leak: A young Lara?

From the screenshots we can see that players will be able to step into the shoes of young Lara Croft through what seems to be memory scenes. Maybe players delve into the mind of Croft at early stages of the game, maybe players use the area's we see in these screenshots as training areas. It would make sense for players to learn the controls of the game as Lara herself practices her skills.

We have seen the extent of Lara's training in the recent short video releases by Square Enix. As we gear up for the launch of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Square Enix has released videos on Lara's Intelligence, knowing your enemies before you fight them, making weaponry and of course, knowing your environment. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is planned for release on September 14th and will be arriving on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Marvel's Spider-Man: The Heist DLC strung up teaser trailer

| Sep 4, 2018 2:00 AM CDT

A brand new teaser trailer has been released for Marvel's upcoming Spider-Man release, the trailer teases the games coming DLC titled "The Heist."

Marvel's Spider-Man: The Heist DLC strung up teaser trailer

Last week details for the "The Heist" DLC were released by insomniac games, we learned that this DLC will be taking players on the path of Felicia Hardy, or better known as Black Cat. For those that don't know Black Cat is a expert of martial arts and acrobatics, she is also a known lover of Spider-Man and throughout some of the comic books Black Cat and Spider-Man were known to mutually love one another.

It is unclear whether a relationship between our webheaded friend and Black Cat will develop in Insomniac's game, but what we do know is that she is "leaving mysterious clues around Marvel's New York to toy with Spider-Man." It could also be speculated from the trailer that Spider-Man could have some sort of feelings for Black Cat, as we can see early in the teaser trailer that they are literally standing face to face with only a plane of glass in-between them. This makes me raise the question, why didn't Spidy just catch her then if that is his motive? Why did he hesitate and let her run when she was standing right in front of him? I could be reading to much into this, but in my opinion Insomniac has included some form of romantic chemistry between these two characters. That doesn't automatically make it a bad thing, infact I'm quite excited to see how the developers have played out this relationship between Spider-Man and Black Cat.

BioWare is 'looking into' NVIDIA RTX support for Anthem

| Sep 3, 2018 9:34 PM CDT

NVIDIA's upcoming GeForce RTX 20 series graphics cards have built-in RT cores for ray tracing and Tensor cores for some very interesting AI-based goodies in the future... but what about more games using these RTX features?

BioWare is 'looking into' NVIDIA RTX support for Anthem

Now we have Mass Effect developer BioWare addressing some questions over Twitter on whether their upcoming game Anthem will have support for DLSS, ray tracing or multiple GPU gaming rigs. Executive Producer on Anthem, Mark Darrah said "We're looking into it right now" when asked about DLSS, ray tracing and mGPU in Anthem.

EA will be publishing Anthem, so it would make sense for BioWare's next-gen game to support RTX since Battlefield V will have support for real-time ray tracing on NVIDIA's next-gen GeForce RTX 20 series cards.

Anthem endgame includes seasons, strongholds, and free DLC

| Sep 3, 2018 5:55 PM CDT

Anthem apparently won't follow Destiny's expansion model and carve up story content and fracture the playerbase: future story DLC will be free. Plus BioWare touches upon the game's post-story content.

Anthem endgame includes seasons, strongholds, and free DLC

As a live service game it only makes sense that Anthem won't have a season pass. Post-launch content will be funded by cosmetic-only microtransactions--lootboxes won't be in Anthem--rather than paid macrotransactions (expansions, passes, etc) and will include various endgame activities called Elder Content. Anthem's Elder Content umbrella enfolds numerous things to do when players finish the story, such as Strongholds, a high-level 4-player event that doles out strong gear, as well as rotating seasonal content to keep users engaged.

In a PAX West 2018 panel BioWare devs touched on Anthem's endgame:

Anthem's dialog limited to two choices, BioWare explains why

| Sep 3, 2018 4:43 PM CDT

BioWare explains why Anthem's two-choice conversation system is quite condensed and how it can potentially affect gameplay and NPC relationships.

Anthem's dialog limited to two choices, BioWare explains why

In many ways Anthem aims to redefine BioWare games. Mostly known for rich singleplayer RPGs with expansive dialogue, Anthem is an action-based online multiplayer game that scraps Mass Effect's conversation wheel in favor of a more streamlined binary system. Gamers will only be able to pick two dialog options when talking to NPCs, but the studio says Fort Tarsis--the home to all mission-doling agents and NPCs--will change based on your decisions.

Game flow is one of the major reasons for Anthem's diminished dialog choice. BioWare says it wants to give action-oriented players a means of moving forward without necessarily being overwhelmed by conversation (as a live game it's important players are continually engaged and that BioWare caters to all sorts of fans).

New Dragon Age, Mass Effect may have live game storytelling

| Sep 3, 2018 3:19 PM CDT

We've known for a while now that BioWare is working on a new Dragon Age game, and sources tell Kotaku's Jason Schreier that it'll have live service elements. And there's evidence a new Mass Effect is in early planning stages. Now at a recent PAX West 2018 panel key BioWare devs assert that Anthem's online infrastructure could power certain storytelling elements in its future games--including new Dragon Age and Mass Effect titles.

New Dragon Age, Mass Effect may have live game storytelling

Now that BioWare has put insurmountable effort into Anthem's online framework and live game infrastructure, the studio sees that its other franchises could benefit from a similar online path, at least when it comes to continuing story and lore.

Future Dragon Age and Mass Effect games could be quite different from what gamers are used to in this respect (and possibly in a good way). Thanks to a live game approach, which would require gamers to be online versus playing offline, BioWare could examine data and ensure post-launch DLC and stories are tailor-made to how gamers play and how much progress they've made with certain characters.

Final Fantasy XIV hits 14 million players

| Sep 3, 2018 9:12 AM CDT

Final Fantasy XIV just got a lot more popular with a big influx of players, Square Enix has announced.

Final Fantasy XIV hits 14 million players

Few games have experienced a dramatic turnaround as Final Fantasy XIV. The MMORPG started out messy and alienated many core fans, but through countless hours of crunching, guidance, and player-driven feedback, Square Enix completely evolved the project. As of now the game remains one of the best (if not the best) MMOs on the market today, and with some 14 million users, it has the numbers to back it up.

Ahead of its fifth anniversary celebration, Final Fantasy XIV has now topped 14 million registered players. This milestone saw a whopping 4 million players join Eorzea in 2018 alone. Beloved game director and savior of Eorzea Naoki Yoshida had this to say about the achievement:

Microsoft is ramping up to the launch of Shadow of the Tomb Raider by unveiling a new custom Xbox One X console, with an awesome trailer to show it off - the attention to detail is stunning, with it being one of the best-looking consoles of its generation.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics worked with Microsoft on the custom Xbox One X console, with Head of Studio at Eidos-Montreal saying: "Shadow of the Tomb Raider will challenge Lara Croft in new and unexpected ways. Our team has created a diverse set of skills, combat techniques and equipment for players to master, and they'll certainly need them".

Don't think it'll be cheap as the custom Shadow of the Tomb Raider Xbox One X console is currently on auction on eBay for a current bid of $7600, and I'm sure it'll go up. 100% of the sale of the beautiful piece of technology will benefit the Best Friends Animal Society, which is a "leading national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending the killing of dogs and cats in America's shelters".

Eminem's Kamikaze album features samples from Kingdom Hearts

| Sep 3, 2018 1:00 AM CDT

Over the weekend, Eminem surprised not only the entire rap game but anyone close to the genre with a brand new album. The album is focussed on anyone that disliked the artists' previous album "Revival", included within the album is a song that features samples from Square Enixs' Kingdom Hearts.

Eminem's Kamikaze album features samples from Kingdom Hearts

According to an interview with Rolling Stone, Eminem was asked what sample is featured on the track "Good Guy (feat. Jessie Reyez)" and the artist replied with "That's me doing my video game thing. Kingdom Hearts. It's a Japanese video game, and that's the theme song from it." It appears that Eminem is a very big fan of Kingdom Hearts' melodies and loved it so much that he deemed the melodies "It's one of the dopest melodies I've ever heard."

The artist continued by explaining how he went about sampling the video games' melody, here is what he had to say "Filtered it, did some chops, did some processing to it. I basically made it unrecognizable, but I know they would have still found it. That's why we had to deal with the clearance. But when I do anything I try to make it to where it's not fully recognizable." If you are wondering if this is the first time a Kingdom Hearts melody has been featured in a rap song, it is not. J Cole released Dollar And A Dream III which happened to have Kingdom Hearts II's Darkness of the Unknown behind the lyrics.

Anthem alpha and beta tests to proceed game demo

| Sep 3, 2018 12:08 AM CDT

Gamers will have at least three different ways to try BioWare's big new multiplayer game ahead of launch, the developers have confirmed.

Anthem alpha and beta tests to proceed game demo

BioWare will be hosting at multiple phases of technical testing ahead of Anthem's February release, including alpha and beta tests alongside a polished VIP demo slice that sits closer to the finished product's quality. The Anthem demo launches February 1, 2019 on all platforms but you'll have to pay to access it. PS4 gamers who pre-order get in, alongside EA Access and Origin Access subscribers on Xbox One and PC. Origin Access Premiere subscribers get both demo and full game access.

"The demo is a demo. It's not a tech test, it's not a beta that comes out three weeks before the game where 'your feedback' - like, no, it's 'this is the game and we hope you love it,' and at that point that's really what we're showing," BioWare's Mike Gamble said in a PAX West 2018 panel.
