Microsoft starts warning users of upcoming OneDrive storage downgrades
The free storage tier for OneDrive used to be among the largest of all the cloud storage providers by offering 15GB absolutely free. In 2015 Microsoft announced that they were cutting that all the way down to 5GB, a controversial move to be sure. The decision was made to let users claim the extra space if they responded and acknowledged they wanted it.
If you didn't respond to the call for action, then you should be receiving an email from Microsoft telling you to start migrating your data now, or upgrade your plan, by July 13th. If you haven't been using more than 5GB, then you have absolutely nothing to worry about, but if you're a data hoarder with your OneDrive account, then you'll need to plan for the eventual cutting of your storage space. The next highest tier is the "Basic" tier with 50GB of storage priced at $1.99 a month.
The smaller space will be the norm for all new users, so if you don't happen to have an account quite yet, then you'll only receive 5B for free. Initially, long ago under the SkyDrive moniker, they offered 7GB of storage upon signing up. A limited time offer in 2012 designed for users who had signed-up for the cloud service before April 22nd 2012 allowed those users 25GB of free storage as a token of appreciation. 5GB for free is more than what Dropbox offers, at 3GB, but less than Google Drive at 15GB. Apple's iCloud also has 5GB of free storage.

Dark Souls 3 patch incoming this Monday, doesn't fix the big issues
From Software knows that PC players are experiencing some game-breaking issues that are making the game more difficult to play. It certainly wasn't the best launch a PC game has had this year, but not the worst by a long shot. A new patch is coming this Monday, but it isn't really fixing much at all. Instead, it almost feels like a slap in the face, as if they forgot about the substantial issues that plague the game.
The patch notes are very short for Dark Souls 3 version 1.03.1. They only mention adjusting performance for weapons, fixing issues that prevented the use of some items after clearing the game and "General balance adjustments and bug fixes." Though patching major issues is no small feat, perhaps a list of what they've acknowledged exist and are actively working on, even in general terms, would help to satiate the desire of the community to know what's going on. Communication post-release, after all, is a key ingredient in building a franchise.
Dark Souls 3 has been hotly anticipated since it was announced. The visual upgrades alone make it a fantastic thing to just look at, but the technical issues have prevented from being enjoyed at all. Crashes are a frequent occurrence and the framerate lock at 60FPS has been an annoyance to those who have the hardware to run it faster. Despite the issues that have occurred at launch, it's still one of the fastest selling PC ported games ever.

Facebook changes turn news feed into quasi-news site
Facebook is currently testing a significant change to its news feed that see it take on the form of a news aggregator site in many ways.
The new design features a tabbed categories section at the bottom of the normal feed where you can choose to see all news, World & US news, Sports news, and Food news, among others. By default, all of these categories will show up, but if you like, you can disable any of them.

Rainbow Six Siege is having a free-to-play weekend, discounted price
Ubisoft is giving gamers a chance to test-drive their latest tactical-driven shooter, Rainbow Six Siege, this weekend, on the PC only. It's completely free-to-play until Sunday, April 17th at 1PM PT. And if you happen to really enjoy yourself, they're letting you buy it outright with a 33% discount.
You can find the offer on both Steam and Uplay, which is needed to play it anyway, where you can start the ~32GB download. If you do decide to buy the game, then all of that hard earned progress will carry over, too, so you won't be starting completely fresh. This isn't the only free-to-play game that's making an appearance this weekend, with the Doom open multiplayer beta taking place this weekend as well as Star Citizen also offering a free fly promotion over the weekend.
Rainbow Six Siege is turning into a very competitive shooter that could eventually come to the forefront of competitive gaming. Ubisoft has announced a second competitive season for their Rainbow Six Pro League, which will start on June 2nd, only on PC. They've added a $150,000 prize for the new season, upping the stakes a bit. The first season is still ongoing with the championship tournament, and $50,000, happening on May 7th in Cologne, Germany. They're very determined to have this game be one of the next great eSport games, which it's actually perfectly suited to, given the large emphasis on teamwork and strategy involved. Even if you're not into eSports, it's turning into a very good shooter in it's own right, despite it being multiplayer only.

AMC drops texting during movies idea in response to feedback
Two days ago, AMC CEO Adam Aron considered the prospect of bringing texting and phone use to his movie theaters, and it hasn't taken long for the idea to get canned. As was the case when Regal Entertainment brought it up two years ago, public feedback was resoundingly against it, and so the company has publicly announced it will not happen.
"We have heard loud and clear that this is a concept our audience does not want," Aron wrote in an open letter to customers, later continuing, "With your advice in hand, there will be NO TEXTING ALLOWED in any of the auditoriums at AMC Theatres. Not today, not tomorrow, and not in the foreseeable future."
While it's easy enough to empathize with a desire to bring more young people to the movies, the consensus is clear: this isn't the way to go about it. Aron says AMC will instead focus on enhancing its technology, food and beverages selection, seating, loyalty program, and its website and app.

Leaked Red Dead Redemption 2 map surfaces, reveals prequel timeline
Red Dead Redemption 2's in-game map has reportedly been leaked onto the net, revealing that the upcoming sequel will actually be a prequel.
Just last month we reported on a rumor that Read Dead Redemption 2: Legends of the Old West would be released in 2017, and that it'd feature a "much bigger open world". Now Red Dead Redemption 2's in-game map has been leaked on NeoGAF, corroborating the claims of the huge open world and revealing some key details about the upcoming game.
Techradar reports that the map is indeed genuine, saying that the image is a "very recent" copy drafted up by Rockstar's art department. Their source even divulged that the game--dubbed Legends of the Old West--will be set before the events of Red Dead Redemption. The lower left-hand section of the map links with the original game's upper right-hand section, with the Great Plains and the Blackwater settlement serving as the juncture point between the two world zones. You can compare the two maps with the slider below.

Another Ghostbusters game coming out alongside the movie
As should be expected, the new Ghostbusters movie has spurred the development of a new game to coincide with its release. If the movies trailers weren't too scary for ya, then this should be just fine for viewing. The new game from Activision is coming out for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and the PC on July 15th.
This is technically the sixth game from the ghost busting franchise, putting you in the shoes of some fresh parapsychologists during a new adventure that's set after the events that happen in the new movie. Each of the characters you have in your party, a total of four, will have their own personalities, strengths and should, therefore, play differently. It's up to you to devise the best strategy to use them. Team tactics will win the day, at least more efficiently anyway. Activision is including a cooperative mode, too, so you can profess your lack of apprehension for phantasmal beings to each other.
The party is supposed to start on July 15th on the PS4, Xbox One and the PC (via Steam). The trailer shows an isometric 3D game dissimilar to the last one, though it looks challenging enough. The franchise might not need another game just yet, but we're going to get it. Hopefully, the humor is spot on.

Elite: Dangerous' Engineers expansion flying into beta next month
One of the great things about Elite: Dangerous is the commitment that the developer, Frontier Developments, has when it comes to continuing to expand the galaxy. Sure, it didn't quite release with everything under the sun, but it's getting it in slow and deliberate expansion packs. The next one, an Engineers expansion, is entering beta starting the first week of May.
Just like the name would imply, this expansion adds in a new career field, the engineer, which are being described as shifty-eyed technical experts that work behind the scenes, in a secretive way to improve and tune ships to their maximum potential. But mostly it's going to add in a new crafting mechanism and a loot system. You'll eventually be able to modify nearly any stat of an item. Beta testers will get a chance to take it for a spin first, of course,
That is available for Horizon's season pass holders, but they will have version 1.6 that's coming to all players, even those that still don't want to slam, or land with menace, into planets. 1.6 is going to have a completely revamped mission system that, while not detailed in full, should please players as it's been modeled from player feedback. 1.6 will enter a closed beta at the same time that 2.1, or Engineers, does.

Apple rumored to rename OS X to 'MacOS' in the coming months
In an 'it's about damn time' move, Apple is rumored to be in the process of renaming OS X to MacOS, which might be announced during its WWDC event later this year.
Apple talked about how it concluded product life spans for an Earth Day promotion, the company wrote: "years of use, which are based on first owners, are assumed to be four years for MacOS and tvOS devices and three years for iOS and watchOS devices" as determining factors, reports TNW.
TNW reports that it expects Apple to rename iOS to 'phoneOS' in the near future, with the 2017 iPhones - but I find that quite disturbing. Could Apple mature its smartphone OS and name it 'phoneOS'? Let us know in the comments, below.

Minecraft sells 10,000 copies a day
The Minecraft phenomenon is just as strong today as it was back in 2011--arguably even more so--and continues its trend of titanic sales across the globe, raking in an astronomical 10,000 copies sold with every passing day.
According to a new write-up in the New York Times, the mega-blockbuster block-based indie hit Minecraft sells 10,000 copies a day. No, really. Ten thousand copies a day. Since we know that Minecraft retails for about $27 on PC, a quick bit of math reveals that Microsoft pulls in $270,000 every day just from this single property.
"Today Minecraft costs $27 and sells 10,000 copies a day. (It's still popular across all age groups; according to Microsoft, the average player is between 28 and 29, and women make up nearly 40 percent of all players)," the NYT wrote in the report.

If Gears of War 4 fails, the future of the series could be jeopardized
Although Gears of War 4's release date was only just announced, the devs at The Coalition are already planning ahead with Gears of War 5. But there's a chance the franchise could be put on hold if the latest game tanks in sales.
Like any of gaming's Big Three, Microsoft wants its first-party IPs to be safe bets. Nintendo has Mario, Sony has Uncharted, and Microsoft has Gears of War (as well as Forza and Halo). It's pretty much a given that Microsoft will always pump out new iterations of these first-party blockbusters, but what happens when the sales falter? If Gears of War 4 is a huge flop, there's a chance the series could fall into that dreaded state of games limbo.
"One of the things that's nice about Microsoft's investment is that we know, unless this does horribly, we're probably going to do another one," Coalition dev Rod Fergusson told DigitalSpy. "That's made it easier to design moving forward. In the past, when we were doing Gears 1, Gears 2 and Gears 3, there was a lot of doubt, we didn't know whether there would be another one, so we just had to get everything in right now. Here, we're able to look at it, recognise a great idea that doesn't quite fit right now, but it'll fit in the next one. It's made it a lot easier."

GameStop exec says next-gen console launches could be 'imminent'
With E3 2016 right around the corner, it should come as no surprise that next-gen consoles could be a thing - a huge reveal of the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation - possibly, according to a GameSpot executive.
GameSpot COO Tony Bartel talked at the GameStop Investor/Analyst Day briefing in Texas, where he said that the launch of at least some of these next-gen consoles "seem[s] imminent". Bartel didn't say which consoles, but with the constant flow of rumors on Nintendo's next-gen console, and the PlayStation 4.5 all but confirmed, it looks like we should be excited for the next couple of months.
Bartel said: "Although we have not modeled extensive growth for new innovation in this presentation, we are very pleased to see the introduction of technology like virtual reality and rumored new console launches, some of which seem imminent".

Dark Souls 3 breaks records as franchise's fastest-selling PC port
The last chapter in From Software's epic Souls franchise is already a rousing success across the board, pulling in over half a million sales on Steam alone.
Dark Souls 3 has smashed sales records and is now the fastest-selling PC release in the history of the franchise. According to figures published by SteamSpy, as of April 13 Miyazaki's tortuous medieval epic has sold 528, 435 copies on Steam since its release. That's over half a million sales in just three days time. Doing some simple math and multiplying the game's cost with the copies sold, we see that Dark Souls 3 has earned a whopping $31.7 million dollars.
Despite reports of Dark Souls 3 being plagued by a game-breaking bug, the new RPG has also broken the record for the most concurrent Steam players after release, dethroning Dark Souls II. Since it's the last game in the triumphantly popular Souls series, tons of gamers want to get in on the action and experience From Software's send-off to the franchise.

Oculus 'don't condone' software hacks, promises changes
Of course it wouldn't take long for Oculus to stomp down on the software hacks that allow Rift exclusives to work on the HTC Vive, with the company warning users that it's not happy with the move, and future updates will stop this from happening.
Oculus spoke with GamesIndustry.biz, where they said: "This is a hack, and we don't condone it. Users should expect that hacked games won't work indefinitely, as regular software updates to games, apps, and our platform are likely to break hacked software".
Previously, Reddit user 'CrossVR' posted up some software that allowed Lucky's Tale (an Oculus Rift exclusive) as well as the Rift exclusive Oculus Dreamdeck, to both work on the HTC Vive. CrossVR explained: "It may work with plenty of other games, but that hasn't been tested by myself. It's still early days for this project, since it's only been in development for a few weeks. In the future more games will be supported, but I'm glad to see such swift progress already".

James Cameron changes 'Avatar' saga plans, 4 more on the way
While it's been over seven years since the original 'Avatar' hit cinema screens, Director James Cameron has been adamant that the series would be expanded with three feature films which have been pushed back multiple times. Now he's offered another update on the project - which has now morphed into an additional four feature films!
Speaking at 2016 CinemaCon, Cameron said "We have decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic process. We began to bump up against the limitations for our art form. I've been working the last couple of years with a team of four top screenwriters o design the world of 'Avatar' going forward: The characters, the creatures, the environment, the new cultures. So far, the art I'm seeing, is in pure imagination, really far beyond the first film. It's going to be a true epic saga."
Cameron and 20th Century Fox now plan to have 'Avatar 2' launch for Christmas 2018, with the other three sequels to come in 2020, 2022 and 2023.

NVIDIA's new hot fix driver supports the new open beta of DOOM
NVIDIA has just released a new hot fix GeForce driver that adds official support for the new open beta of DOOM.
Unfortunately, there's no support for NVIDIA's SLI technology - and no support for multi-GPU setups, period. This is what makes me so mad, guys. The id Tech engine doesn't seem to like multi-GPU setups, because - well, reasons.
The new hot fix driver can be downloaded from here, with the changelog found below:

AMD's next-gen Polaris 10 and Polaris 11 will be unveiled at Computex
With NVIDIA poised to unveil its next-gen Pascal-based GeForce cards next month, AMD can't miss out on all of the fun - with the company set to unveil its own next-gen Polaris-based video cards late next month, and early June - during Computex in Taiwan.
AMD will also reportedly be showing off their new Bristol Ridge-based APUs, which are set to hit notebooks with the latest Radeon M400 series video cards. Now, onto the Polaris news. It's pretty much fact that AMD's next-gen Polaris 10 (codenamed Ellesmere) will be unveiled, with a super-small TDP of around 100W, and will have no issues playing games at 2560x1440 at 60FPS.
The new Polaris 11 GPU is codenamed Baffin will consume even less power, with a TDP of under 50W. We heard yesterday that the Polaris 10 samples are hitting speeds of 800MHz, and right up to 1050MHz, with 2560 stream processors (but only 2304 SPs enabled on that particular sample).

Google donates $20 million to help disabled people
Google's philanthropic offshoot Google.org has donated $20 million across 30 non-profit organizations to further develop technology that will help the disabled. Its generosity follows the results of its Google Impact Challenge: Disabilities, which launched last year with the aim of seeking great technological ideas from different organizations, all seeking to improve the lives of the disabled.
The grant winners -- The Center for Discovery and Perkins School for the Blind among them -- will develop technology that can convert regular wheelchairs into power wheelchairs for increased independence and freedom, assist the blind in finding their way around better with an app, more readily treat children with clubfoot (rotated feet), and help those with difficulty communicating verbally or with text do so better with a specialized keyboard, among other things.
Google says nearly 1/7th of the planet suffers from a disability; one in three of those lives in poverty, and 90 percent living in developing countries don't have access to the devices they need.

Japanese 'Godzilla' reboot reveals first trailer
While the U.S. version of the franchise might have been righted by the 2014 reboot starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Bryan Cranston, compared to the 1998 Roland Emmerich smash-em-up, that hasn't stopped the original creators Toho Studios from moving forward with new Eastern version of the long-running franchise. Toho have today released new footage for their first Godzilla film in 11 years - 'Shin Godzilla'.
Directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, 'Shin Godzilla' stars Hiroki Hasegawa, Satomi Ishihara, and Yutaka Takenouchi, and will be released on July 29th in Japan. There's no word yet on an international release, but the film will no doubt be released before the sequel to the U.S. version in 2018, which will start production after Director Gareth Evans delivers 'Star Wars' spin-off 'Rogue One' this December.
