Modern Warfare Remastered: maps, dedicated servers and more

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 2, 2016 2:32 PM CDT

Following the official Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare reveal, Activision has outed key details about the Modern Warfare Remaster such as dedicated servers, a fully-fledged progression system, the first three multiplayer maps and more.

Modern Warfare Remastered: maps, dedicated servers and more

As revealed by the leaks, Modern Warfare Remastered will feature 10 multiplayer maps and the "full, iconic story campaign", and the first three MP maps have been revealed: Crash, Backlot, and Crossfire are confirmed. Dedicated servers are in, along with a full progression system, including the ability to reach Master Prestige, unlock weapon attachments, and more. Your old Modern Warfare stats won't carry over. Raven Software will develop the game.

The remaster won't be a separate disc but a full digital download, and is bundle-only with select Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare physical and digital bundles. There are only three ways to get Modern Warfare Remastered: in the $80 Legacy Edition, the $100 Digital Deluxe Edition, and the $119 Gamestop-exclusive digital-only Digital Legacy Pro Edition.

Infinite Warfare is Call of Duty's first interplanetary space odyssey

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 2, 2016 2:00 PM CDT

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare has finally been revealed, and Activision has dropped tons of intel about the new game--co-op zombies, interplanetary space combat, and more have all been confirmed.

Infinite Warfare is Call of Duty's first interplanetary space odyssey

It turns out the rumors were right on the mark: the new Call of Duty is taking war to the heavens. Infinite Warfare's campaign missions will take players all over the "vast expanse of the solar system" in a planet-hopping foray in space, and one campaign mission even takes place on a "spinning asteroid hurling towards the sun". The campaign is said to feature "large-scale warzones" and will feature three environment types: boots-on-the-ground firefights, dogfights in the skies via airborne jets, and zero-g space combat/starship battles. The Retribution warship will be the campaign "hub", and players will get their very own starfighter called the Jackal.

The game seamlessly transitions between land to space combat without any loading screens, and the Jackal ship will be customizable. Infinite Warfare will also have its own "original" co-op zombies mode that's completely separate from the campaign experience. As far as multiplayer goes, Infinity Ward confirmed that some MP maps will be on different planets and space stations, so expect possible zero-G combat.

LG fingerprint sensor sits beneath smartphone screen

Sean Ridgeley | Mobile Devices | May 2, 2016 10:08 AM CDT

Fingerprint modules on smartphones typically require you to press your finger on a raised button, meaning they must be mounted externally. LG's South Korean outfit Innotek is innovating on this front, though, and has created a fingerprint sensor that doesn't require a button at all and is mounted beneath the screen, thus offering the functionality without interfering with the form.

With the sensor out of the way, companies can be more free with their smartphone designs.

The sensor is said to be safe thanks to high-strength cover glass which protects it from water and scratches, while a proprietary adhesive keeps it secure even after high impact. It's also said to have an extremely low false acceptance rate of 0.002%.

WhatsApp may be coming to Windows, OS X

Sean Ridgeley | Software & Apps | May 2, 2016 9:14 AM CDT

It appears a WhatsApp client is coming to Mac OS X and Windows, according to information uncovered by software sleuths WABetaInfo. The information seems to come from a survey on WhatsApp's translation page and pretty clearly indicates a beta is on the way. Although the text is rough in parts, bits like "Download for Mac OS X", and "Download for Windows" make it difficult to imagine another scenario.

WhatsApp may be coming to Windows, OS X

The chat software is used by a staggering 1 billion people and is already available on Windows mobile, BlackBerry, Nokia, and Symbian, so it would not be surprising in the least to see native Windows and Mac clients appear. Should it happen, expect sync functionality across different devices and operating systems.

AMD is aiming at the VR market with its Polaris-based video cards

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | May 2, 2016 2:48 AM CDT

With both AMD and NVIDIA set to unveil their next-gen consumer video cards in the next month, AMD's position on VR is being solidified.

According to AMD's Corporate Vice President, Alliances, Content & VR, Roy Taylor, said that Polaris is being aimed at VR gaming PCs. With the minimum PC specs for VR kicking off with the Radeon R9 290, AMD has a great position in front of itself to nail VR gaming with Polaris.

AMD is trying to offer a great card for VR, and the upcoming Radeon R9 490X (which it should arrive as) will be a hugely popular card. We should expect 30-50% more performance over the R9 390X thanks to the new 14nm FinFET process, the new Polaris architecture and the possible use of GDDR5X.

Did Bethesda just release its own uPlay-like games launcher?

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 1, 2016 9:13 PM CDT

Bethesda might lock its future games behind its very own games launcher, Bethesda.net.

Did Bethesda just release its own uPlay-like games launcher?

Bethesda.net isn't just a website--it's also the company's brand new games launcher, and it could be a new DRM gateway for the publisher's future PC games. It looks as if the Elder Scrolls and Fallout developer might be following in the footsteps of EA's Origin and Ubisoft's uPlay with Bethesda.net, and we might see the publisher make its games exclusive to its first-party launcher/storefront catalog.

Right now all the launcher does is host the Fallout 4 Creation Kit Open Beta, but it could be used for something quite different in the future. The launcher links to your Bethesda.net account and has a redeem code function, but this is only for the Fallout 4 DLC closed beta test (right now, at least). As soon as Bethesda.net was revealed, I instantly proclaimed that the studio is making its own uPlay, and I still think it's true. Let's hope I'm wrong, because the studio is really one of the last safe harbors when it comes to DRM launchers.

Dark Souls developer's next game will be on PlayStation VR

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 1, 2016 5:28 PM CDT

From Software's next game will apparently release on Sony's PlayStation VR headset.

Dark Souls developer's next game will be on PlayStation VR

We've known for a while that From Software, the diabolical devs that brought us the hellish Dark Souls trilogy, is breaking away from the Souls franchise. Hidetaka Miyazaki even went so far as to say that "it wouldn't be right to continue the Souls series." Although we don't know what From Software's new project actually is, we do know it'll have a port on Sony's PlayStation VR.

The news was gleaned via a recent video on the studio's YouTube channel that chronicles a timeline of From Software releases. The video ends by hinting From Software's newest game could drop in 2017, and it'll release on the full spectrum of platforms: Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and the PlayStation VR.

AMD's upcoming Radeon R9 M480 rocks a Polaris 11 GPU

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | May 1, 2016 3:34 PM CDT

I'm definitely not getting tired writing all of this video card news, as it's incredibly exciting times for technology enthusiasts - another one of the reports surfacing in the last 24 hours is that AMD's upcoming Radeon R9 M480 mobile video card will be powered by the Polaris 11 GPU.

VideoCardz is reporting that the new Radeon R9 M480 GPU has a Device ID of 67E0, which is Baffin - or Polaris 11. The Radeon R9 M480 will sport 4GB of GDDR5 clocked at 1250MHz, while the GPU will be clocked at 1GHz - but this will change depending on the supplier.

Both the R9 M480 and the R9 M490 will rock Polaris 11 GPUs, but we don't know how many stream processors will be included. The current Bonaire PRO-based Radeon R9 M380 has 768 stream processors, so we should see around the same, if not closer to the 1000 SP mark for the next-gen Radeon R9 M480 when it arrives later this year.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare ARG reveals faction details

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 1, 2016 1:41 PM CDT

A new alternate reality game for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare has sent players on a scavenger hunt looking for clues, and the community has unearthed new clues about the upcoming game--including the official reveal.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare ARG reveals faction details

Activision has just launched a clever ARG for the new CoD: Infinite Warfare that allows players to send messages to Lt. Reyes, one of the main protagonists in the game. Reyes is asking players to compile a code (GCNE3MD4GATF) using hidden digits and letters strewn throughout the Nuk3town map, kicking off a huge community scramble. Things get really interesting when you ask Reyes specific queries in the Facebook messenger app.

When Reyes is asked about "Modern Warfare Remastered" (you have to type it in full), he basically confirms it by saying "stay frosty, soldier, stay frosty". Reyes also reveals the protagonist force, SCAR, the mercenary private military group SATO, the UNSA which is basically Infinite Warfare's version of the UNSC from Halo, and the dreaded Settlement Defense Front aka SetDEF or "The Front". Check below for more info on each. Reyes also reveals the official trailer for Infinite Warfare will drop tomorrow at 12PM EST, so stay frosty.

NVIDIA's purported GeForce GTX 1060 will rock 6GB of RAM

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | May 1, 2016 9:32 AM CDT

The upcoming GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 will be monster video cards based on the 16nm FinFET process and the new Pascal architecture while the GTX 1080 might rock GDDR5X, the GTX 1070 will reportedly include GDDR5. But what about the mid-range?

Well, according to the latest reports, the GTX 1060 will arrive as the possible GTX 1060 Ti - rocking a huge 6GB of GDDR5. The GTX 960 for comparisons sake, rolled out with 2GB and 4GB versions at the beginning of 2015. The upcoming GTX 1060 (or Ti) will be using the GP104-150-A1 GPU while the GTX 1080 uses the GP104-400-A1 and the GTX 1070 with its GP104-200-A1 GPU.

The huge 6GB framebuffer will be great to see, as NVIDIA better positions itself in the mid-range market - which is what AMD is looking to stomp down on with its huge Polaris push starting later this month.

Windows 95 has been installed onto an Apple Watch... because why not

The Apple Watch hype train is nearly dead, so there's some news that might interest Watch owners - someone has installed Windows 95 onto their Apple Watch. Yeah, that's right.

Nick Lee installed Windows 95 onto his Watch, by using a modified WatchKit app that loaded his own custom code instead of Apple's foundations. The interface is super small, and while there's no mouse input, the touchscreen on the Watch can be used to navigate Windows 95 - tapping the Start menu, and opening up apps, etc.

It took an entire hour to install Windows 95, and the interface response time is pretty damn slow. Lee even used a motor to keep touching the crown so that the Watch screen won't turn off after a few seconds. So while there's not much you can do with Windows 95 on an Apple Watch, it's still a cool achievement to see - I guess?

Samsung 'Bedtime VR Stories' is a truly new way of telling stories

Anthony Garreffa | Extended Reality (XR) | May 1, 2016 3:31 AM CDT

Samsung is walking down an interesting path when it comes to VR, with its new Gear VR-powered 'Bedtime VR Stories' for parents. Bedtime VR Stories allows parents to be right there in the VR world with their kids at bedtime, telling them an amazing VR bedtime story.

Not all parents can be with their kids at bedtime, and for traveling parents - this type of system works incredibly well. I have two young daughters (5 and 2) and travel once a month on average for work, so this type of system for someone like me, is transformative. I can be on the other side of the world physically, but in the same room with them during story time.

Samsung's new Bedtime VR Stories uses a combination of VR and VOIP, with each story taking between 6-7 minutes, and requires a Gear VR and Samsung Galaxy smartphone for the parent, and a special cardboard viewer for the child.

First Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare trailer now live

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 1, 2016 2:03 AM CDT

After countless Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare leaks and teases, Activision finally publishes a teaser trailer for the new futuristic Call of Duty shooter.

First Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare trailer now live

The new Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare teaser trailer is entitled "Know Your Enemy", and gives players their fist look at the game's possible antagonist force called the Settlement Defense Front. Activision also posted a livestream of the trailer on Twitch, and had a SDF bot within the chat posting up some curious phrases. The Call of Duty Instagram feed has also been updated with teasers.

In-store pre-order advertisements for Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare were leaked earlier this week, revealing the game's $80 Legacy Edition, which comes with a free copy of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Remastered. The remastered port features a full campaign and ten multiplayer maps, but Activision has yet to officially announce which maps are included.

Without the reconstruction tech, Quantum Break looks incredible at 4K

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | May 1, 2016 1:49 AM CDT

Quantum Break wants to be a beautiful game, but when you have sold your souls to your potato gods - this is what happens. Making a game for consoles is the worst thing you can do when you want to make a great looking game which so happens to be one the PC, too. Jeff tore the game apart in his performance analysis, and I tore it apart when I found out Remedy had watered it down so much.

Well, with the reconstruction technology disabled, which renders at a lower resolution and then upscales to your monitor's resolution - it ruins it. But, if you disable the reconstruction technology and crank the rendering resolution to 4K, it looks gorgeous.

In order to hit 4K in Quantum Break, you're going to need some serious GPU horsepower - as DSO Gaming reports that even with their GeForce GTX 980 Ti, they didn't even hit an average of 20FPS. But, it looks absolutely beautiful. The lack of multi-GPU support is because Remedy decided to make it an UWP game, and Microsoft really just hates PC gaming so UWP-based games don't get multi-GPU support. My rage about that subject, we'll leave for another day.

Forza Motorsport 6: Apex requires 16GB RAM for gaming at 4K 60FPS

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | May 1, 2016 12:57 AM CDT

Forza Motorsport 6: Apex has had its official PC requirements released, with Turn 10 Studios' driving game requiring some relatively modest PC hardware to play the game.

You'll need a decent dual-core CPU with 8GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce GT 740 or AMD Radeon R7 250X video card. If you want to hit 1080p 60FPS, you'll need a GeForce GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290X. 4K 60FPS isn't too far away, as you'll need a GeForce GTX 980 Ti or Radeon R9 Fury X.

Other than that, Turn 10 recommends an SSD + 30GB of HDD space for 4K 60FPS gaming, while you'll need 6GB or more of VRAM for 4K 60FPS. Turn 10 suggests an Xbox One controller for your input, which is going to be much, much better than playing Forza Motorsport 6: Apex on your keyboard.

No Man's Sky VR would be a 'really good fit', says creator

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 30, 2016 12:07 PM CDT

No Man's Sky creator Sean Murray echoes what fans have known since the reveal: virtual reality would be a fantastic platform for the procedurally generated, planet-hopping space sim.

No Man's Sky VR would be a 'really good fit', says creator

Hello Games' Sean Murray is definitely optimistic about virtual reality, so we could see a VR adaptation of No Man's Sky sometime in the future. In a recent interview with IGN, Murray said that VR is a "really good fit" for No Man's Sky: "I think VR in general is incredibly exciting. I would say I'm a believer. I have this optimism about it. But it doesn't have a killer app yet--I haven't found anything that makes me want to spend hours upon hours in VR yet.I really hope everyone gets it right."

So could No Man's Sky be the "killer app" that virtual reality needs? Could Hello Games' space sim take the mantle as the one singular must-have VR experience and kick off a new wave of excitement for the platform? Murray was still guarded about No Man's Sky on VR, choosing not to directly answer if the game is coming to VR or not.
