EA boss says 'there may be no consoles in the future'

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | May 7, 2016 3:27 PM CDT

If you're familiar with my personal opinion on consoles, you'll know that I think they've had a negative impact on PC gaming and technology in general - so to hear EA's Chief Competition Officer, Peter Moore, ringing in the death of consoles. Hell. Yes.

Moore told The Daily Orange: "I'm not sure there will be consoles, as we know them anymore. Games will be accessed by streaming technology, so we don't need hardware intermediaries in between the two. If you and I want to play Battlefield 12 against each other, we'll just jump into a game via whatever monitor we happen to have in our homes. It'll be on a chip, rather than in a box".

Moore added that the PS4 and Xbox One are "well set up to advance as technologies does", simply blowing my mind. I don't know how they can advance, when they can barely handle 720p at 30FPS, but hey - what do I know. I think we'll see consoles begin to disappear, as games can be streamed online or from your smartphone - especially if we begin thinking, 5-10-20 years from now.

Star Citizen hits $113 million in funding, development ramps up

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | May 7, 2016 12:36 PM CDT

Can you believe that Star Citizen has reached $113 million in funding, just five months after the game hit $100 million back in December 2015.

Cloud Imperium Games now has over 1.3 million people signed up keeping an eye on the development progress of the game, with the pace of production on Star Citizen picking up in the last few months. The developer has said that it will "build on the foundation" of Alpha 2.4 of the game, as well as pushing the development of the game into the fast lane.

A representative for CIG said: "In our four studios around the world and our partner studios in Canada and elsewhere, people work tirelessly to fulfill the promise of this unprecedented project. Whether they're artists, programmers, designers, engineers, writers, directors, producers, and more, they're all gamers who want to share this experience with everyone reading these each and every month".

ASUS teases its 'Zenvolution' event for May 30, just before Computex

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | May 7, 2016 10:13 AM CDT

ASUS has just announced its new "Zenvolution" event for May 30, just before Computex kicks off in Taiwan - which runs between May 31 - June 4.

The company has a new teaser site counting down to the event, which will take place at Humble House Taipei, with a livestream to take place, too. ASUS is expected to announce the ZenFone 3, as well as the purported ZenFone 3 Deluxe.

What should we expect from the next-gen ZenFone smartphone? Android Central says we should see 2.5D curved glass on the front and back, USB Type-C connectivity, a fingerprint sensor, front LED flash, and laser autofocus on the back. The Deluxe version should sport an all-metal design, with a physical button on the front.

NVIDIA announces its GeForce GTX 1080, as fast as GTX 980s in SLI

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | May 7, 2016 3:25 AM CDT

NVIDIA has just announced its new Pascal-based GeForce video cards, with the new GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 being unveiled a few hours ago in Austin, Texas.

We live-tweeted the entire thing, but now that I have some time in my hotel room to decompress, here's a quick rundown of what to expect from the new GTX 1080 and GTX 1070. There are only a few differences between the GTX 1080 and the GTX 1070, but boy is the GTX 1080 a freakin' monster.

NVIDIA has built the new GeForce 1000 series cards on the new 16nm FinFET process, with the new Pascal architecture making its debut in the consumer world alongside GDDR5X. GDDR5X is a huge improvement over GDDR5, arriving with a huge 10GHz clock speed - up from the 7GHz available from GDDR5. But what about tech specs?

Battlefield 1 has Bad Company 2 style destruction, no auto-aim

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 6, 2016 10:30 PM CDT

Now that DICE's new WW1-based shooter Battlefield 1 is unveiled, its time to take a look at more multiplayer specifics including classes, starting weapons, vehicles and more.

Battlefield 1 has Bad Company 2 style destruction, no auto-aim

Battlefield 1 will have four main multiplayer classes with different starting weapons: Soldier/Assault (SMGs), Medic (semi-auto rifles), Support (LMGs) and Scout (sniper rifle). Vehicles are tied to dedicated vehicle classes, so players will have to stick with the vehicle they designate--if you pick the tank class, you have to use tanks, ditto for biplanes. There will also be different kinds of tanks, and every vehicle is balanced to have its own specific weaknesses. Keeping with the World War I themes, the game doesn't have any auto-aim or lock-ons, meaning players will have to use skills and tactics to conquer enemies.

Battlefield 1's multiplayer has tons of artillery explosions with placement guns for infantry and anti-air. Massive-scale 64-player combat will take place on maps all across the world, from London to France and even the Arabian deserts. Multiplayer will be ultra-chaotic thanks to Bad Company 2 levels of destruction. Mustard gas, trench warfare, tanks (multiple types), biplanes, battleships, horseback cavalry and more has been shown off.

'Ghostbusters' reboot director lashes online critics

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | May 6, 2016 6:33 PM CDT

For a film that's in dire need of some good publicity, director Paul Feig has taken aim at online critics of the 'Ghostbusters' reboot, in a further sign that things behind the scenes aren't great.

Speaking to Salon, Paul Feig lashed online critics of the badly received 'Ghostbusters' trailer, calling out the very demographic he should be courting, saying. "Geek culture is home to some of the biggest assholes I've ever met in my life, especially after being attacked by them for months because of this 'Ghostbusters' project." Defending his all-female cast, Feig went on to say "I don't care what shape or size or color or anything they are. I live or die on what things are funny and whether or not people will be entertained by them."

A valid point to be sure - but based off the footage that we've seen in trailers thus far, it's not even going to be very funny at any rate.

Battlefield 1 campaign features multiple perspectives

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 6, 2016 4:38 PM CDT

The new WW1-themed Battlefield 1 has been revealed, and it looks absolutely amazing. DICE affirms that the game's multiplayer and singleplayer will be pushed to new heights, with innovations across the board.

Battlefield 1 campaign features multiple perspectives

We've already talked about Battlefield 1's insane wide-scale world-breaking 64-player PVP combat, and the game's singleplayer campaign will be just as impressive. DICE has confirmed that Battlefield 1's campaign mode will be told through multiple perspectives, meaning we won't be stuck with a single team, signaling a dynamic shift in one of the best possible periods in history.

The devs were light on the specifics of the campaign, but we already know one of the game's many protagonists. The African American hero shown on the game's promos is a Harlem Hellfighter, one of the most heroic and renown American infantry units that served in World War I. Since Lars Gustavsson says that Battlefield 1 is "all about the old world meting the new world with cataclysmic results," we'll likely see through the eyes of different major world powers, from scimitar-wielding horseback riders in the Arabian desert to German soldiers flying high inside of zeppelins.

Battlefield 1 has 64 player multiplayer with environmental chaos

Battlefield 1's 64-player matchmaking is still intact, and it's even better than ever.

Battlefield 1 trailer features cavalry, Zeppelins

Sean Ridgeley | Gaming | May 6, 2016 3:26 PM CDT

If you're a skeptical old Battlefield grognard like me, you had your hopes low for the Battlefield 1 reveal trailer (yeah, the name is official now). Turns out it's undeniably awesome, thanks to stupidly impressive in-engine visuals, sword-equipped cavalary (??!), Zeppelins and Zeppelin gunner gameplay, sweet melee weapons (a mace and what looks like a shovel), oldschool dogfights, and destruction. Oh, and a Seven Nation Army electronic remix that somehow works really, really well.

Apple Music introduces student discount

Sean Ridgeley | Software & Apps | May 6, 2016 2:55 PM CDT

As of today, Apple is offering a discount to students who sign up for its streaming service Apple Music.

If you're enrolled in an eligible institution, you'll receive 50 percent off your subscription. In a somewhat unexpected twist, the offer is available outside the US for once: those in many other countries -- the U.K., Germany, Denmark, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, among others -- will be able to take advantage. Once you've done so, the offer is good for four not necessarily continuous years.

The offer is no doubt a bid to better compete with rival Spotify, which has done the same for awhile now. Last we checked, Spotify sat at 30 million subscribers with Apple Music at 11 million; news is in now that the latter has grown to 13 million, attributed in part to its $14.99/mo. family plan. Soon, a new interface is said to arrive, which should help matters further.

Shots fired: GameStop CEO says 'Wii U was disappointing to everybody'

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | May 6, 2016 1:45 PM CDT

We all know how ridiculously successful the Wii was for Nintendo, but what about its successor? The Wii U was a console that didn't find its place in the market, but now GameStop CEO Paul Raines has come in and really slammed Nintendo.

Raines said that the Wii U was "disappointing to everybody, including them [Nintendo]". He said that Nintendo still has the power to "break records", and that each time a new Pokemon event takes place, GameStop sees a huge surge in business.

Raines has big hopes for NX, adding: "Nintendo is interesting in that they really are able to keep things as quiet as they can for a while. NX sounds exciting. We're looking forward to it. They're very innovative in everything that they do. I hope that they come out with something exciting and innovative".

Battlefield 1's African American lead is a WW1 Harlem Hellfighter

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 6, 2016 12:14 PM CDT

DICE's new Battlefield game, Battlefield 1, takes place in World War I and features an African American protagonist. Now we've made a few connections that could tell the lead character's backstory.

Battlefield 1's African American lead is a WW1 Harlem Hellfighter

Battlefield 1's nameless hero is likely part of the Harlem Hellfighters, an American infantry division that saw extensive battle in World War I. In fact, the Harlem Hellfighters "spent more time in combat than any other American unit." Who better to serve as the focus for a chaotic alternate-history WW1 shooter?

We're able to make this connection because of the"Hellfighter DLC pack" that's listed on the leaked in-store promo poster. DICE is set to reveal key details about the game during today's livestream at 4PM, but Battlefield 1's release date has already leaked ahead of schedule.

Dishonored 2: Everything you need to know

Derek Strickland | Gaming | May 6, 2016 12:09 PM CDT

According to the latest issue of Game Informer, Dishonored 2 isn't just a sequel: it's a dramatic evolution of the franchise.

Dishonored 2: Everything you need to know

Based on what we've heard about Dishonored 2, the game should be the best kind of sequel--it features a ton of fresh, breakthrough content without straying too far from the original universe. Game Informer's latest cover issue delves deep within the game to discover a plethora of new content, including new wave of awesome powers, an intrigue-ridden story arc starring Corvo Attano and Empress Emily Kaldwin, new AI and antagonists, and a brand new Mediterranean-inspired region called Karnaca. The following checklist was compiled by NeoGAF user Nirolak.

Dishonored 2 is slated to release on November 11, 2016, on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Bethesda will reveal more gameplay footage at E3 2016, along with a bunch of fresh details about the game.

Windows 7 update breaks PCs with ASUS motherboards

Sean Ridgeley | Software & Apps | May 6, 2016 11:25 AM CDT

Microsoft's recent KB3133977 update for Windows 7 means those with ASUS motherboards will no longer be able to boot into their operating system. Instead, they'll be greeted with a red screen of death that cites a "secure boot violation."

The source of the issue is KB3133977, which enables Secure Boot in UEFI and is evidently an issue in this specific configuration. While it's been confirmed for awhile now, the update was always optional, until Microsoft recently made it mandatory for an unknown reason.

Fortunately, ASUS has a relatively simple workaround that involves changing boot settings. Not everyone will be aware of it though (even more likely if they're still on Windows 7), so a significant number of people will be left in the lurch, or at least confused for an unnecessary amount of time.
