Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jul 19, 2018 12:50 AM CDT

Fortnite is the largest game on the market right now, pulling in a huge $318 million in the month of May alone and now making Epic Games over $1 billion since its launch in late-2017.

Samsung's next-gen foldable smartphone to launch early 2019

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Jul 18, 2018 11:00 PM CDT

Samsung will reportedly be unveiling its foldable smartphone sometime in early 2019, with The Wall Street Journal reporting that it will arrive in early 2019 with its 7-inch screen that will fold in half "like a wallet".

Samsung's next-gen foldable smartphone to launch early 2019

The previous rumors on Samsung's foldable smartphone teased a launch at CES 2019 so these new reports are beginning to form a solid foundation for the flexible smartphone. WSJ adds that the phone will feature a compact "display bar" on one side of the folded phone, with cameras on the back.

Samsung will reportedly aim its foldable smartphones at a niche audience, with a "broader" debut of foldable handsets in 2H 2019. Samsung's eventual goal is to have three flagship brands on offer: Galaxy S, Galaxy Note, and the Galaxy Foldable - or whatever they call it, I think Galaxy X, which will be great.

Microsoft teases 'all-new Xbox hardware' at Gamescom 2018

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jul 18, 2018 9:59 PM CDT

Gamescom 2018 is right around the corner so it comes as no surprise that Major Nelson teased "all-new Xbox hardware and accessories" in a blog post this morning.

Microsoft teases 'all-new Xbox hardware' at Gamescom 2018

The funny thing is that he edited it quickly after posting it, with Microsoft "backtracking on this statement" reports Engadget. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft showed off the next-gen Xbox at Gamescom next month, codenamed Project Scarlet. We could expect a refreshed Xbox One X with more than 1TB of storage, however.

Engadget thinks Microsoft will unveil an "even cheaper Xbox One S" console, and not an upgraded Xbox One X. Why not both? I'm sure higher-end gamers want more than 1TB of storage, so it would be nice to see a new Xbox One X with 2TB or even 4TB of storage.

Borderlands 3 may still be a ways off

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jul 18, 2018 6:12 PM CDT

Gearbox has yet to fill a writer position that's been open for almost a year--could Borderlands 3 be a longer ways off than we thought?

Borderlands 3 may still be a ways off

Borderlands 3 has been in development for quite a while. Gearbox's Randy Pitchford confirmed the sequel back in 2016. Despite its long dev cycle the game won't be released any time soon. 2K Games parent company Take-Two Interactive delayed the title to its next fiscal year, which runs from April 1, 2019 through March 31, 2020. But an unfilled job listing may indicate a longer delay for the game.

Back in October 2017 we reported that Gearbox is hiring a writer for its new "unannounced FPS/RPG hybrid" (aka Borderlands 3) to help flesh out the story arc and characters. As of now Gearbox has yet to fill the position, which could mean a few things: the game might be longer out than we expected, possibly beyond the targeted FY2020 timeline; the team didn't fill the position because they don't necessarily need the writer; or the game is still on track for its launch window and this unfilled job won't affect anything.

Intel Core i9-9900K rumor: 8C/16T at a huge 5.5GHz on Aug 1

Intel is expected to launch the new Coffee Lake refresh on August 1 with the actual launch taking place in the weeks and months after, with multiple new Coffee Lake refresh CPUs filling out the 9th-gen family. The Coffee Lake refresh will see Intel fighting hard against AMD with its Ryzen 7 2700X, which is an 8C/16T design. Intel has no consumer 8C/16T processor on the market, so this would be a first for the company with the purported Core i9-9900K.

Anthony Garreffa | Extended Reality (XR) | Jul 18, 2018 3:12 AM CDT

The VR market just got a whole lot more interesting over the last 24 hours, with a new consortium that involves NVIDIA, AMD, Valve, Oculus, and Microsoft introducing the new VirtualLink specification.

VirtualLink: next-gen VR over a single USB Type-C cable

VirtualLink is a new open standard for the next generation of VR headsets that will see the entire VR experience powered by a single USB Type-C connector, removing the current need of HDMI and multiple USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports for the HMD, cameras, sensors, and power.

VirtualLink uses a single USB Type-C connector that provide four high-speed HBR3 DisplayPort lanes, something that is future-proof for next-gen VR headsets. There's USB 3.1 data for high-res cameras and sensors, and a huge 27W of power on tap with the new VirtualLink specification.

Battle royale revenue to grow 600% in 2018

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jul 17, 2018 4:43 PM CDT

The battle royale market is expected to rise astronomically throughout 2018 as major publishers like EA and Activision jump into the craze.

Battle royale revenue to grow 600% in 2018

Back when PUBG saw its huge meteoric shift in sales I predicted that the game would eventually be knocked off its earnings mantle by billion-dollar publishers once they entered the battle royale arena. Interestingly enough, Epic Games has taken the throne with its free-to-play BR game Fortnite, which has earned a massive $1 billion in revenues across all platforms in less than a year. Now another major shift is on the horizon as the Call of Duty and Battlefield franchises ready their respective premium salvos.

According to analyst firm SuperData, revenues gleaned from battle royale games will spike by over six-fold this year to a tremendous $12.6 billion. The firm predicts both Battlefield V's and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's new battle royale modes will cause segment earnings to jump by over 600% year-over-year.

Fortnite makes over $1 billion in less than a year

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jul 17, 2018 2:34 PM CDT

Fortnite has made over $1 billion from in-game purchases in less than a year, according to the latest analyst reports.

Fortnite makes over $1 billion in less than a year

Since October 2017, Epic Games' towering battle royale sensation Fortnite has pulled in over $1 billion in revenues across all platforms, analyst firm SuperData reports in its latest brief. On a month-to-month earnings basis the game has seen consistent growth: in April Fortnite earned $296 million, whereas May's spending increased by almost 8% to $318 million.

Fortnite's free-to-play model, which monetizes cosmetic items like skins, drives the game's strong revenue growth. Fortnite's staggering success owes itself to many factors including its accessibility across mobile, consoles and PC, alongside successful engagement monetization strategies including skins, battle passes, and seasonal events to maintain MAUs and DAUs.

Treyarch tease COD: Black Ops 4 zombies Comic-Con reveal

Jak Connor | Gaming | Jul 17, 2018 5:00 AM CDT

At the start of January this year, we saw the gruesome trailer for Call of Duty: WWII zombies The Darkest Shore. Treyarch are now teasing the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 zombies ahead of the reveal at this years Comic-Con.

Treyarch tease COD: Black Ops 4 zombies Comic-Con reveal

The tease comes from the Call of Duty Twitter page and features just two red glowing eyes on what seems to be an enemies skull. Most interesting about this teaser though is that we haven't seen these coloured eyes before, as the Call of Duty Twitter responded to some fans comments saying "Prepare for a different breed." This could be a strong form of evidence to suggest that players will be getting a completely different zombie, perhaps a new stronger mob that will come in high quantities, or just a single high quality boss that will need a lot more fire power to take down.

Treyarch have released this teaser ahead of the Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Zombies Comic-Con panel, which has been planned for Thursday, July 19, 2018, at 1:00 p.m. PDT (4:00 p.m. EDT). During this panel, everything will be revealed about the upcoming mode, until then we will just have to deal with the teasers that Treyarch keep rolling out. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is scheduled for release on October 12th and will be available on PC, Xbox One and PC.

Call of Cthulhu releases this Halloween

Jak Connor | Gaming | Jul 17, 2018 4:30 AM CDT

It appears that the Steam Store has revealed the release date for Focus Home Interactive and Cyanide Studios' Call of Cthulhu title. H.P. Lovecraft may actually turn in his grave when the game releases this October.

Call of Cthulhu releases this Halloween

Focus Home Interactive, the publisher for Call of Cthulhu has not officially stated anything regarding a release date, but a date has appeared on the Steam Store's listing for the game. Steam usually doesn't publish release dates for games unless the date has been finalized, so we should expect an official announcement from either the publisher or developer (Cyanide Studios) in the coming weeks.

If the Steam date is correct, this will mean the Lovecraftian horror themed title will be releasing on Halloween, October 31st. Quite a convenient time to release Call of Cthulhu, perhaps the developers are hoping for that little bit more extra immersion Halloween will give, as players jump onto their harrowing title for the first time.
