Xbox Live support coming to Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Feb 3, 2019 5:41 PM CST

Microsoft will have some surprises up its sleeve at the Game Developers Conference next month, with rumors the company will unveil a new cross-platform development platform that would see Xbox Live support for games on Android, iOS, and Nintendo Switch.

Xbox Live support coming to Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch

Using the Xbox Live service on a different platform isn't totally new, with Microsoft owned games like Minecraft requiring an Xbox Live login across Android, iOS and the Nintendo Switch. This new move at GDC 2019 would see many more Xbox Live games being supported on the various mobile platforms, as well as the usual Xbox Live achievements, social network, multiplayer, and more.

This news comes directly from Microsoft on the official GDC 2019 scheduling website, with the company explaining:

Future Metro games won't skip PC, here's why

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 3, 2019 3:32 PM CST

Amid a rather hectic PR nightmare caused by Metro Exodus' Epic Store exclusivity, a Metro game dev says the series could skip PC entirely if sales do poorly. This won't happen for many reasons we'll outline here, and we'll bring some more grounded discussion to the heated topic.

Future Metro games won't skip PC, here's why

The Metro Exodus PC debacle is raging on. Angry PC gamers are boycotting Deep Silver and review-bombing Metro games on Steam, saying the sequel's exclusivity deal with Epic Store is unfair. Suffice it to say, PC players aren't happy about the new PC Game Store Wars that will soon fracture their favorite platform. 4A Games, the team behind the Metro series, aren't too happy about this either. One game dev even said if Metro Exodus does badly on PC, future games won't arrive there. This won't happen. To understand why, we have to take a closer look at how games are made.

First of all, it's not always up to the developer where (and even when) their game launches. Depending on the deal 4A Games signed with Deep Silver, the publisher probably calls the shots. Publishers put up serious cash to get the games actually made and then distributed over a worldwide audience. The publisher has obviously signed a deal with Epic Games for timed exclusivity rights (yes, Exodus will launch on Steam, but not before 2020) and this deal could even extend to future games. We have no clue how much Epic offered Deep Silver for timed exclusivity, but the Fortnite-maker has plenty of cash to wave around.

Titanfall free to play battle royale game on the way

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 3, 2019 12:42 PM CST

Respawn Entertainment is adapting its fast-paced shooter into a free-to-play battle royale game...and for some reason it won't have mechs.

Titanfall free to play battle royale game on the way

Respawn is making a new Titanfall spin-off game called Apex Legends, sources say, that's a lot like Blizzard's Overwatch. The game will be free-to-play on consoles and PC, centering around the popular battle royale genre where gamers battle it out in an arena map. Apex Legends won't have mech suits like previous Titanfall games and instead takes queues from Overwatch with a selection of pilot operators with unique abilities and roles. The game will of course be monetized as all F2P games (and online EA games) are with tactics like lootboxes.

According to eSports writer Rod Breslau, Apex Legends will be 3v3 action with multiple classes:

Metro Exodus developer flips out, threatens PC gamers

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Feb 3, 2019 7:08 AM CST

The entire Metro Exodus moving from Steam to the Epic Store scandal is enough for me to not support 4A Games, so I've been staying out of the stories and letting the games news writers Jak and Derek handle it all. But then this news broke out on the weekend and I'm the only one writing news right now, so here we go.

Metro Exodus developer flips out, threatens PC gamers

4A Games is having a full on dummy spit moving Metro Exodus hastily from the Steam store to the new Epic Store where it will make more money per sale, which is great for them, but a super dick move towards Valve that has been marketing Metro Exodus for what feels like years now. Anyway, now the Metro developer is throwing shade at the PC gaming market threatening that if Metro Exodus bombs on the PC we most likely won't see future Metro titles on the PC as the developer would seemingly go console exclusive.

How did this happen? One of the 4A Games developers posted on Russian board 'GAMEINATOR' where he touched on the review bombing of Metro Exodus on Steam make the developer hurt that it was trying to make a great game. Yeah, alright. The developer pushed a narrative that if Metro Exodus bombs in sales on the PC because of these review bombings on Steam, future Metro games (if there are any) will most likely not arrive on the PC.

Crackdown 3 uses cloud tech: 12 x Xbox Ones of power

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Feb 3, 2019 6:47 AM CST

Crackdown 3 is right around the corner with the latest bit of hype something worth being excited over, as well as the game looking like an insane amount of fun, will harness the power of cloud-based technology for new levels of destruction.

Crackdown 3 uses cloud tech: 12 x Xbox Ones of power

Microsoft Studios creative director Joe Staten during an interview with VentureBeat teased: "What we're doing in Wrecking Zone is we're running Havok in Azure. We're spinning up the equivalent of 12 Xbox Ones, that level of cloud compute, to do this lockstep full destruction. What this means is that if you're on a day one Xbox One from four years ago, or a brand new Xbox One X, that experience of destruction will be the same on all platforms. An Xbox One X will be rendering it in 4K and an Xbox One will be in 1080p or what have you, but a destructive chunk is a destructive chunk regardless of the platform. It's really nice. It means that even if I have an older piece of hardware, I'm not getting a downgraded Wrecking Zone experience".

Crackdown has always been about destruction but with the latest version the developer wanted to take it to the next level, which is a large reason why Crackdown 3 took so long to develop is that the multiplayer was being tuned the entire time. Not just in gameplay, but to make sure the destruction wasn't just added in and that it was still a super-fan game to play, even with all of the physical destruction mayhem happening around you.

Dr. Mario free to play mobile game incoming

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 2, 2019 7:26 PM CST

Nintendo is making a new free-to-play Dr. Mario mobile game with microtransactions.

Dr. Mario free to play mobile game incoming

Keen on tapping the billion-dollar mobile game market, Nintendo expands its smartphone gaming business with a new partnership. Similar to its team-up with DeNA for games like Miitomo, Nintendo partners with Japanese studio LINE for a new mobile game based on the NES classic Dr. Mario.

Dr. Mario World is a free-to-play action-puzzler for iOS and Android that will be monetized with optional microtransactions, Nintendo says, and should be an online-based experience. Expect to see competitive multiplayer aspects with little engagement and spending hooks throughout gameplay. This move folds right into Nintendo's focus on recurring revenue streams.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sells 12 million

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 2, 2019 5:25 PM CST

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is utterly annihilating sales charts and was a huge driven for console sales growth for the holiday quarter.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate sells 12 million

Nintendo's latest Super Smash Bros. brawler has sold 12.08 million copies worldwide in less than a month after release, the company reveals in its latest earnings report. The game, which has the biggest roster in series history, sold 8.92 million copies across overseas territories like Europe and North America, and 3.17 million in Japan. These huge numbers skyrocketed Nintendo Switch holiday sales to 9.41 million units, up a mighty 30% year-over-year, and jumped total software sales to over 163 million.

Pokemon Switch RPG coming late 2019, Bayonetta 3 is TBA

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 2, 2019 3:29 PM CST

The Switch's big new mainline Pokemon RPG is still on track for a late 2019 release, but other games like Bayonetta 3 are still deep in development.

Pokemon Switch RPG coming late 2019, Bayonetta 3 is TBA

In its latest financial reports, Nintendo re-affirmed release windows of key first-party Switch games that will propel Fiscal Year 2019's earnings. Strong software like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Pokemon Let's Go Eevee and Pikachu helped Nintendo sell 9.42 million consoles during the holidays, and pushed total game sales over 163 million. Nintendo plans to leverage this plan in 2019 with strategically staggered game releases.

Nintendo says Animal Crossing is still on for its nebulous 2019 release, possibly early or mid-year to round out the release timeline, whereas the Pokemon RPG, a "traditional find, battle, train type experience," will launch in late 2019 (probably during the Q3 holiday period from October - December). Nintendo's consistency with this window hints development is going well. It's likely the Pokemon mainline game will have some sort of integration with Pokemon Go and utilize specially-made hardware that connects to Switch consoles and smartphones.

Nintendo Switch sales break 32 million

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 2, 2019 12:33 PM CST

The Nintendo Switch enjoys an explosive holiday quarter that propelled total global sales past 32 million units.

Nintendo Switch sales break 32 million

The Switch handheld-console hybrid has now sold 32.27 million systems worldwide, Nintendo announced in its recent Fiscal Year Q3'18 filings. During the critically important holiday quarter from October through December, a period that earns most of Nintendo's yearly revenue, the company sold a staggering 9.41 million Switch consoles, exceeding analyst predictions by nearly 1 million sales.

Q3 sales are up a mighty 30% year-over-year, and dwarf Q1 sales by nearly nine-fold and Q2 sales by nearly three-fold (a trend that's quite typical in the industry). Nintendo also sold 2.4 million more Switches in holiday 2018 (9.41 million) than in holiday 2017 (7.24 million). Big first-party software like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Pokemon Let's Go Evee and Pikachu were main drivers for adoption, along with holiday discounts.

Dauntless is another title skipping Steam for the Epic Store

Jak Connor | Gaming | Feb 1, 2019 4:00 AM CST

Steam is certainly the leading platform for PC gaming, it has a library of games for all types of players, but what if those games skip Steam and go somewhere else? Dauntless has joined the herd in this fashion and is headed for the Epic Games Store.

Dauntless is another title skipping Steam for the Epic Store

In a recent post to the official Dauntless website, developers Pheonix Labs have announced that their monster-hunter inspired title 'Dauntless' will now be making its way to the Epic Games Store. Dauntless isn't the first title to make the decision of skipping Steam and head straight to the Epic Games Store, Deep Silver's Metro Exodus has also chosen this path. It seems that Epic's 88% of revenue returning to developers has provided more than appealing for publishers and developers.

Over time as Epic accumulates more titles that attract gamers to their platform we could see a combatant to Steam? Simply put, perhaps we could. As we watch the decisions of publishers and developers over the course of 2019 we will have a much better idea of how Epic's store sizes up against the monolith of Steam. For now though, Dauntless players will have to do nothing in terms of account changing, Phoenix Labs has said they will be converting all Dauntless accounts into Epic Games accounts which will then provide a seamless continuation of players' adventures.

Anthony Garreffa | Processors | Feb 1, 2019 12:20 AM CST

Intel has made its crazy enthusiast Xeon W-3175W processor available to the public, kinda, with the new 28C/56T processor needing some serious cooling. Well, Asetek has stepped up in the first 24 hours offering at the time of writing, the only certified CPU cooler for Intel's new Xeon W-3175X processor.

The new $2999 processor can be cooled with the new $399 cooler from Asetek that is called the 690LX-PN which is a new closed loop liquid cooler that the company worked with Intel on. Asetek's new cooler is rated up to a huge 500W TDP with its massive triple 120mm radiator with pre-installed fans. The company is using its latest Gen6-s pump with an integrated copper cold plate.

It has a very industrial look on the CPU but I really dig the style, a huge 28C/56T beast of a Xeon W-3175X deserves this awesomely-styled cooling.

FSP mixes power and water with Hydro PTM+ PSUs at CES 2019

Steven Bassiri | Cases, Cooling & PSU | Jan 31, 2019 11:00 PM CST

CES 2019 - FSP showed off the world's first water cooled 80PLUS Platinum certified PSUs, part of the HYDRO PTM+ series. There are two 80PLUS Platinum PSUs FSP showed us, one rated for 850W and the other 1200W.

FSP mixes power and water with Hydro PTM+ PSUs at CES 2019

Both PSUs have built in waterblocks, but also a fan so watercooling is not required for operation at their rated wattages. However, this 1200W PSU supports overclocking, which happens when you hook up the included Bitspower pump/reservoir/radiator (or add it to you existing loop). The 1200W model can output up to 1400W when using watercooling and the 850W can pump out 1000W when watercooled.

Both the PSUs support RGB LEDs, and can sync with ASUS's AURA software. Both PSUs are fully modular and the 1200W model comes with all of the cables you see in the package above. These are ribbon cables with alternating black and white individually sleeved wires. We saw a few modded rigs at the FSP suite at CES, and this green one really caught out eye. You can also see the smooth green glow coming out of the block section of the watercooled PSU. If you need an RGB lit, watercooled, overclockable, 80Plus Platinum PSU, FSP has you covered.

FSP goes big and small with Cannon and Dagger PSUs at CES

Steven Bassiri | Cases, Cooling & PSU | Jan 31, 2019 10:43 PM CST

When it comes to power supplies, things can get a bit dull at some points, but not at FSP's CES 2019 suite. We saw the huge Cannon 2Kw PSU built primarily for mining, and the 650W and 550W Dagger Pro series PSUs for small form factor builds.

FSP goes big and small with Cannon and Dagger PSUs at CES

The Cannon features up to 18 PCI-E power connectors (6+2 pins) and could pretty much power nine dual-8pin GPUs for mining, while still offering the ability to run two 8-pin CPU power connectors. The PSU is rated 80PLUS Gold, has a hold up time over 17ms at full load, and is fully modular.

While the old motto "go big or go home" might apply to sports, but when it comes to computers, sometimes going smaller is harder. The Dagger line currently exists with 500W/600W SFX PSUs, but that's not enough for most people. As we saw with the Cannon line, increasing wattage also increases the size of the PSU. FSP went back to the drawing board and came out with 550W and 650W Dagger pro PSUs in the same SFX form factor, capable of driving more powerful, yet smaller, high performance PCs. These two new Dagger Pro PSUs are both 80PLUS Gold rated and are fully modular.

Samsung's new 1TB storage chip: perfect for new Galaxy S10

Anthony Garreffa | Storage | Jan 31, 2019 9:46 PM CST

Samsung has just announced its new 1TB storage chip, coming in with a tiny flagship embedded universal flash storage (or eUFS) that boasts twice the amount of storage than the previous flagship 512GB eUFS chip.

Samsung's new 1TB storage chip: perfect for new Galaxy S10

The new 1TB chip has the same UFS 2.1 staandard that will offer even higher transfer speeds than the previous 256GB and 512GB chips, with up to 1GB/sec reads and 260MB/sec writes. There's also 58,000 IOPS in random read speeds while 50,000 IOPS for 50,000 random writes that is up from 42K and 40K IOPS, respectively, from the 512GB eUFS 2.1 chips. The smaller 256GB chip has reads of up to 850MB/sec and writes of up to 260MB/sec, the larger 512GB chip reads at up to 860MB/sec and slightly slower 255MB/sec writes.

The new 1TB chip is the same thickness as the 256GB and 512GB chips, so we should see super-thin new smartphones like Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 with 1TB storage models in the very near future. This isn't the bleeding edge though, as we have UFS 3.0 chips right around the corner that will promise close to twice the transfer rates, lower power consumption, but there has been no word on capacity just yet.
