Mortal Kombat 11 will run at 60FPS on the Nintendo Switch

Jak Connor | Gaming | Apr 4, 2019 2:00 AM CDT

In a recent interview, Mortal Kombat 11's Co-creator and Creative Director Ed Boon has spoken out about the performance of the Nintendo Switch version of Mortal Kombat 11.

Mortal Kombat 11 will run at 60FPS on the Nintendo Switch

GameInformer is following up on their coverage of Mortal Kombat 11 over the month of April, and a newly released rapid-fire questions interview with Ed Boon has revealed what we can expect performance wise for the Nintendo Switch version of the game. GameInformer asked Boon "is the Switch version going to run at 30FPS?", Boon replied with "No, the Switch version is going to run at 60FPS."

A follow up question was asked to Boon regarding how the Nintendo Switch version of the game is shaping up. Boon replied with "Its looking great" GameInformer then asks if the background in the fights is going to be blurry, basically asking how bad is the downscaling for the Nintendo Switch edition. Boon replies with "no, no, no - its Mortal Kombat 11". Mortal Kombat 11 is planned for release on the PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch on April 23rd.

Best Buy leak Metroid Prime Trilogy/Persona 5 Switch listing

Jak Connor | Gaming | Apr 4, 2019 1:00 AM CDT

Game retailers are known for their accidental leaks of unannounced games coming to certain platforms through their website listings, and now we have a few more. This time round Nintendo Switch titles have taken the spotlight.

Best Buy leak Metroid Prime Trilogy/Persona 5 Switch listing

Supposed leaks of Best Buy's internal staff-only data base has showcased three unannounced Nintendo Switch titles. According to the above images from Wario64 - a very well known leaker of game information - the Metroid Prime Trilogy, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Persona 5 are heading over to the Nintendo Switch. Here is a imgur folder of all the leaked images.

If you didn't know, Persona 5's 'Joker' is heading over to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which could be a big enough reason for Nintendo to bring his whole game over to the Switch. The listing for Zelda is quite puzzling, as Best Buy has not mistaken A Link to the Past for the announced remake of Link's Awakening, as there is a separate listing for Awakening also in the stores database. The Metroid Prime Trilogy listing could very well be true as Nintendo did delay Metroid Prime 4 for further development time, perhaps a remake of the older games will be enough to tie over Metroid fans until Metroid Prime 4 is ready?

Apple might not have a 5G-capable iPhone until 2021

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Apr 3, 2019 11:27 PM CDT

Apple might be a little screwed this year and going into 2020 and beyond, as it won't have a 5G-capable iPhone to fight against the mountain of Android smartphones that are launching this year with 5G connectivity.

Apple might not have a 5G-capable iPhone until 2021

According to a new investor note from UBS analyst Timothy Arcuri, it might be supply problems that Intel is facing with making 5G chips at the scale that Apple would need it to, for a new iPhone. Apple is already tied up in court with Qualcomm over legal issues so it won't be using a Snapdragon X55 or any Snapdragon 5G chip inside of the new iPhone, so what's next?

The other players in the 5G chip making game are Huawei, which would be a no for Apple, MediaTek which won't have a viable option for a 5G-capable iPhone for a quite a while, leaving the last option as Apple's main competitor: Samsung. Cowen recently told its clients that Apple could "source a 5G modem from chief competitor Samsung" but that would only happen on "tough commercial terms". The use of a 5G chip from Huawei according to Cowen is "off the table as an option" while "MediaTek's stack is too far behind in terms of timeline".

HWiNFO v6.04 supports AMD Navi, mysterious Intel CPUs

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Apr 3, 2019 10:27 PM CDT

The latest version of HWiNFO has preliminary support for AMD's next-gen Navi GPU architecture, but also a new mysterious CPU architecture from Intel teased as Emmitsburg.

HWiNFO v6.04 supports AMD Navi, mysterious Intel CPUs

HWiNFO v6.04 also features added support for Intel's new Cooper Lake and Snow Ridge, as well as full monitoring support for AMD's still-kinda-new Radeon VII graphics card. There is also 'improved' Zen 2 support with the latest version of HWiNFO and a bunch of other things tweaked, added, and now supported. You can grab HWiNFO v6.04 right here.

A few people replied to the original tweet, including Ashraf Eassa who is a Senior Technology Specialist with The Motley Fool, where he said Emmitsburg is "probably CPL/ICX PCH", meaning that Emmitsburg will be the chipset codename for the upcoming Cooper Lake/Ice Lake-X platform on LGA4189. He added that he feels like this "will be the last PCH before SPR. Then I/O will just be another chiplet on the package".

Mortal Kombat's Ed Boon wants to make a new IP

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 3, 2019 6:45 PM CDT

After decades of making Mortal Kombat games, Ed Boon wants to expand outside of the ultra-violent, face-smashing fighter. His dream? An online IP that's always active.

Mortal Kombat's Ed Boon wants to make a new IP

In a recent interview with GameInformer, Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon discussed his ideas for a brand new kind of Netherealm game. Work on Mortal Kombat 11 is going smoothly, but Boon would like to explore a bit more. The new IP would be a kind of online-based experience that puts gamers' hard-earned loot in danger when they're not actually playing.

"On a scale of 1-10, how badly do you want to make a new IP?"

Meet Borderlands 3's new vault hunters

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 3, 2019 5:19 PM CDT

Today Gearbox announced a bunch of new Borderlands 3 info, including the dreaded Epic Store exclusivity, confirmation of a season pass with 4 DLC packs, and an introduction to the game's four vault hunters.

Meet Borderlands 3's new vault hunters

The leaks were 100% accurate on this one. Borderlands 3 will have four classes like its predecessors, one of which is actually familiar. Gamers can customize skills in unique ways, the devs promise, adding more flavor to the experience: each class has "unique abilities, playstyles, deep skill trees, and tons of personalization options" (side note: Borderlands 3 will have over 1 billion guns).

The new stars of Gearbox's chaotic shooter include FL4K, a beastmaster who can charm monsters to his side, Moze, the leaked "botjock" who can instantly call in an explosively powerful mech named Bear to wreak havoc on enemies, Amara, a siren who smashes enemies with her fiery blue fists, and Zane, a soldier operative that uses gadgets and other creative self-made creations to annihilate foes.

Dragon Age 4 will rise from Anthem's ashes

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 3, 2019 2:32 PM CDT

Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, BioWare's next Dragon Age game will be reborn from the dust and bones of Anthem's failing infrastructure. But is this a blessing or a curse?

Dragon Age 4 will rise from Anthem's ashes

Making games is never a straightforward process. Devs typically draw inspiration from previous games and iterate on everything they've done before to make new titles, including animations, engine tech modifications, lighting, textures, and effects. Like the games that came before it, Dragon Age 4 will too iterate on and share key similarities with its predecessor (in this case the troubled Anthem). But with Anthem's laundry list of mistakes and hiccups, this could be somewhat alarming.

To understand how this could affect future games, we need to inspect the present.Anthem actually broke the iteration formula BioWare had used for years, making things quite difficult for its team.

Borderlands 3 will expand with 4 DLC packs

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 3, 2019 1:09 PM CDT

Today Gearbox revealed new details about Borderlands 3, including the hotly contested Epic Store exclusivity on PC. But they also hinted at what's to come after the game releases.

Borderlands 3 will expand with 4 DLC packs

Post-launch DLC is par for the course with big AAA games like Borderlands, and the third chapter will be no different. Gearbox's new chaotic shoot-and-loot FPS Borderlands 3 will have four different expansions that release seasonally over the course of a year. The DLC packs are wrapped in a $29.99 season pass and will include new story missions and campaign content among some extras like weapon skins, trinkets, and mods (which may hint at microtransactions).

"Continue your Borderlands 3 adventure with the Season Pass, featuring exclusive cosmetic items and four story campaign add-ons with new missions and challenges!" reads the listing.

Borderlands 3 is Epic Store exclusive on PC, skips Steam

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Apr 3, 2019 10:31 AM CDT

Borderlands 3 is yet another timed-exclusivity casualty of the PC Game Store Wars, and won't be arriving on Steam until April 2020.

Borderlands 3 is Epic Store exclusive on PC, skips Steam

Today Gearbox Software confirmed two bits of bad Borderlands 3 news: it's exclusive to the Epic Store on PC, and that the game is coming out on September 13, 2019 on all platforms. The first is obviously frustrating for Steam's massive 100 million-strong PC gaming community, and ultimately aligns with Take-Two Interactive's goal to maximize potential profits (the Epic Store lets devs keep 85% of all sales revenues). Epic's exclusivity with Borderlands 3 lasts six months, and the game isn't even up for pre-order on Steam.

Borderlands 3's release timing is wonky, though. Gearbox's huge new sequel will release in a congested window.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate version 2.0.2 releases April 3rd

Nintendo are rolling out the next update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, bringing the version of the game up to 2.0.2 and making some changes to the game.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate version 2.0.2 releases April 3rd

The new update hasn't been officially released yet, but a disclaimer has been released that says that "details" will be available on April 3, 2019 11:30 AM ACDT. On April 3rd, there will also be a pop-up that is available on the title screen, that pop-up when clicked will download the newest version of the game and also give you an option of viewing the changes made in the new version.

This new update could be the last patch we get before the big Version 3.0.0 update that should contain the first new DLC fighter 'Joker' from Persona 5. Nintendo has said that 'Joker' would be arriving "before the end of April", which means that we should see the version 3 closer to the end of April. If there are major changes within this version 2.0.2 update, I will follow up with what these changes are when the patch goes live. The update goes live on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 11:30 AM ACDT.

PUBG creator says 'I'm done with battle royale' games

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Apr 2, 2019 9:52 PM CDT

The entire battle royale phenomenon started with PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and then into Fortnite and now Apex Legends, but behind PUBG there was avid gamer Brendan 'PlayerUnknown' Greene who announced just last month he'll be running a new studio in Amsterdam.

PUBG creator says 'I'm done with battle royale' games

Greene's new studio will be called PUBG Special Projects, and is a dedicated space for all things R&D into game development. But during GDC 2019 a couple of weeks ago, Greene had some words about the stress of creating his next game, and the comparisons that it'll have against PUBG since it has been so damn popular.

GamesIndustry chatted with Greene at GDC 2019, where he said: "We're not doing this for profit. Eventually someday, we may do, but right now it's just about having time to explore. There is no deadline here, this is us with a few years to play. Gaming and the industry has become so hard, this is a very lucky thing to have. We can genuinely explore and be curious for some time".

GameStop teases 'next generation of innovative consoles'

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Apr 2, 2019 9:26 PM CDT

I'm expecting Microsoft to announce its next-gen Xbox at E3 2019 and Sony to unveil its next-gen PlayStation 5 at its own event later in the year, and now we have GameStop all but confirming the news.

GameStop teases 'next generation of innovative consoles'

During a recent earnings call, GameStop CFO Rob Lloyd said: "With respect to new hardware, as we get closer to the end of the current console cycle for Xbox and PlayStation, we expect demand to decline as some customers choose to wait on the sidelines in anticipation of acquiring the next generation of innovative consoles".

GameStop recently posted a huge $673 million full-year loss for 2018, with the company acknowledging "the challenges facing our pre-owned video game business" and the dire need to change its business model. We should expect less second hand game sales from next-gen consoles as we move to many more digital sales (just like the PC has done over the last 10 years, I haven't purchased a physical disc in way over 10 years).
