PUBG's backstory is a Lex Luthor puppetmaster fantasy dream

Jak Connor | Gaming | Jul 18, 2019 4:00 AM CDT

Since the release of PUBG, there has been many iterations of the Battle Royale genre that have made improvements that PUBG just couldn't keep up with. So to even the playing field, PUBG Corp have decided to give some unnecessary backstory to the title.

PUBG's backstory is a Lex Luthor puppetmaster fantasy dream

Above we have the Season 4 Cinematic Trailer that introduces us to a young boy who was the sole survivor of a war on Erangel. After the desolation of his town and the people he loves, the boy grows into a mastermind puppet master who flies in contests to compete in his life and death competition for his pure amusement.

Some people could argue that this is hardly what PUBG needs to survive against the other Battle Royale titles such as Apex Legends or Fortnite. Instead, the developers should be concentrating on smoothing out the gameplay to create a more rich and rewarding experience that keeps players on their servers.

Human-based AI solves Rubik's Cube in 28 moves, 1.2 seconds

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Jul 18, 2019 3:00 AM CDT

Ever wondered the fastest possible time with a Rubik's Cube? Its not by a human, but of course an artificial intelligence and boy its quick.

Human-based AI solves Rubik's Cube in 28 moves, 1.2 seconds

Above we have Ben Katz and Jared Di Carlo who have engineered a robot that can solve a Rubik's Cube much faster than humanly possible. This robot can solve a puzzle in just 0.38 seconds, which is the current record on paper. This news came out in March of last year, but now we have a new invention in the artificial intelligence Rubik's Cube solving field. This time, researchers behind DeepCubeA have managed to teach their artificial intelligence through human experience to solve a cube in 1.2 seconds.

While this might not be as fast as Katz and Di Carlo's demonstration, DeepCubeA's AI managed to solve the cube in less moves. This is because the system focuses on using real learning experience and to improve speeds. DeepCubeA equipped their AI with roughly 10 billion different puzzle combinations, this repertoire of combinations allowed for the AI to complete the puzzle in just 28 moves. The average human takes around 50 moves to solve a Rubik's Cube.

Humans search for alien interstellar Morse code with arrays

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Jul 18, 2019 2:00 AM CDT

Israeli-Russian physicist, Yuri Milner has decided to partner up with VERITAS to go on the hunt for alien communication code in a completely different way.

Humans search for alien interstellar Morse code with arrays

Yuri Milner decided to fund Breakthrough Listen, a science based program with the initiative of discovering extraterrestrial intelligence somewhere across the cosmos. To help them do that, Breakthrough have partnered up with VERITAS, or - Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System. The goal of the partnership is to basically search the surrounding stars for alien morse code through nanosecond-long optical pulses.

The most conventional way of looking for alien communication is through radio waves, so the line of thinking behind is the project is to stray away from the norm and try something different in hopes of receiving some form of information. As we don't know how aliens communicate, anything is really worth a shot. Its certainly not guaranteed that Breakthrough or VERITAS will stumble across something, but hopefully they do because it will be good to know that we aren't alone out here.

Elon Musk's Neuralink head DRILLING tests begin next year

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Jul 18, 2019 1:00 AM CDT

Elon Musk's research company that is creating what could be the bridge between the brain and technology is beginning its testing on human subjects as early as next year.

Elon Musk's Neuralink head DRILLING tests begin next year

Musk's Neuralink is the newest technology in brain-interfacing and has the goal of what Musk describes as a way of achieving a "a sort of symbiosis with artificial intelligence." Doing this will pave the way forward for human benefits in the field of medical science and other fields. At the moment the technology is quite new, and for it to be used applicants will have to surrender their skulls to a drilling process that will create the ultra thin holes that are required to insert the Neuralink threading.

While this might seem out of the ball park for human technological capabilities, Musk's company performed tests on rats and the performance results exceeded that of today's systems. The rats that were tested showed exceptional data transfer results, the data was captured through a USB-C port located on the head of the rat, and provided 10x more than what the best current sensors can offer. Long term, Neuralink plans to allow for the electrodes that are planted in the subjects head to be able to communicate wirelessly with chips outside the brain (image above).

Valve changed Half-Life because GoldenEye 007 was SO good

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jul 17, 2019 11:30 PM CDT

I still remember that Christmas morning opening up a magazine about the Nintendo 64 and feeling that 'what is this meant to be' type of present, to my parents handing me another box and inside of it was GoldenEye 007.

Valve changed Half-Life because GoldenEye 007 was SO good

It was at that moment I realized my parents had to have gotten me the new Nintendo 64 console at the time, and after ripping that wrapping paper and box to pieces, my brother and I were playing GoldenEye 007 on our brand new Nintendo 64 console. It was one of the best first-person shooters of its time, and Rare at its best on the N64.

GoldenEye 007 producer Martin Hollis explained in 2004 about the AI in the game: "The important thing is to show the player the AI. There's no point having sophisticated AI that the player doesn't notice. The game mechanics have to showcase the AI. The level setup has to showcase the AI. And it all has to make an actual difference to gameplay".

Galaxy Fold 2 rumored for 2020, portability is the focus

Anthony Garreffa | Mobile Devices | Jul 17, 2019 10:48 PM CDT

Samsung had lots of hype around its Galaxy Fold with samples sent out to specific press and influencers, but in the end it failed as it was pulled from the market -- along with foldable phone competitor Huawei and its Mate X. They both flew too close to the sun.

Galaxy Fold 2 rumored for 2020, portability is the focus

Now rumors are swirling about the next-gen Galaxy Fold 2 and that Samsung is opting for a foldable clamshell-style design with a foldable 6.7-inch display. The new Galaxy Fold 2 will have a much smaller 1-inch screen on the front for basic notifications, including the date and time, making it a cheaper phone to produce than the original Galaxy Fold.

The foldable clamshell-style Galaxy Fold 2 rumors is giving me some mad throwbacks to the game-changing RAZR phone from Motorola back in the day. The original RAZR had a physical keyboard at the bottom with a clamshell design that saw the screen at the top. Samsung is definitely looking like it's working on something similar with the Galaxy Fold 2 if these new rumors are true.

Congressman calls Facebook Libra cryptocurrency a 'shitcoin'

Anthony Garreffa | Cryptocurrency & Mining | Jul 17, 2019 10:08 PM CDT

Facebook planned its new cryptocurrency 'Libra' for what I'm sure was a future of mass adoption, but the push from the social networking giant in the middle of its battle with users' privacy seems to have failed.

Congressman calls Facebook Libra cryptocurrency a 'shitcoin'

During a congressional hearing for the possible issues that Facebook could cause with its rollout of Libra, Congressman Warren Davidson from Ohio called Facebook Libra a "shitcoin". Davidson said: "A lot of people in this space will use a phrase that you may be familiar with: 'there's bitcoin, and then there's shitcoin.

Davidson questioned CoinShares' chief strategy officer Meltem Demirors, asking her if she knew what a shitcoin was, adding "Are you familiar with that phrase, and what people might mean by that?" to which Demirors replied "I am". So yes, the chief strategy officer of CoinShares obviously knows what a shitcoin is, and admitted it

1.6 million people plan to attend Area 51 event on Sep 20

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Jul 17, 2019 9:11 PM CDT

Area 51 is going to light up on September 20 for all the right reasons, with a huge crowd of people planning to storm Area 51 in Nevada. The event is being organized on Facebook with 1.6 million people (and it keeps going up) planning to attend Storm Area 51, They Can't Stop All of Us.

1.6 million people plan to attend Area 51 event on Sep 20

The event will see the millions of people at the time meeting at the Area 51 Alien Center tourist attraction and then from there the post says they will "coordinate our entry" into Area 51. Better yet, in case the government starts shooting at people to stop them the post adds that "if we naruto run, we can move faster than their bullets", finishing on a more positive note of "Lets see them aliens". Yeah BOI.

The United States Air Force is putting its military foot to the ground, with Air Force spokesperson Laura McAndrews telling ABC News: "The United States Air Force is aware of the Facebook post. The Nevada Test and Training Range is an area where the Air Force tests and trains combat aircraft. As a matter of practice, we do not discuss specific security measures, but any attempt to illegally access military installations or military training areas is dangerous".

PSVR 2 rumor: wireless, eye/head-tracing tech, start at $250

Anthony Garreffa | Extended Reality (XR) | Jul 17, 2019 8:22 PM CDT

We've known details about Sony's new PlayStation VR 2 for a while now, but it seems more patents and leaks are here about the PSVR 2 that are painting a clearer picture.

PSVR 2 rumor: wireless, eye/head-tracing tech, start at $250

Sony's next-gen PSVR 2 will not see the light of day until late 2020 at the earliest, with leaked specs suggesting a $249 price and 2560x1440 screen at 120Hz refresh rate. Better yet, it would feature eye and head tracking as well as up to 5 hours of battery life with a large 220-degree field of view.

Inverse is reporting the new PSVR rolling out starting at $249, being completely wireless and having a high-end 1440p 120Hz refresh rate and 220-degree FOV. This new information comes from a recently-published patent application by the USPTO, confirming that Sony is indeed working on a new VR headset with both eye and head tracking.

Shadowkeep may be Destiny 2's last expansion

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jul 17, 2019 5:07 PM CDT

Bungie is far from done with Destiny 2. There's still lots of things to do from tweaks and balances to implement and the free-to-play New Light version to the dearth of seasonal updates planned alongside Shadowkeep. But insofar as expansions, there's evidence that Shadowkeep could be Destiny 2's last.

Shadowkeep may be Destiny 2's last expansion

Destiny 2 is getting many changes in September. Shadowkeep, the new moon-based expansion, will drop alongside a free-to-play Destiny 2 version that comes packed with cross-saves. But Shadowkeep won't be a huge paradigm-shifter like Forsaken. In fact it could be the last major expansion the game sees. There's a few reasons for this: the way Bungie talks about Shadowkeep, how the studio is gearing up for more MMO-style RPG progression, and its past cadence of expansion releases.

Bungie says Shadowkeep is a new beginning. It's the inception of a new bold vision for Destiny, and represents the first major content drop free of Activision's meddling.

Nintendo called out on cheap Switch controllers

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jul 17, 2019 4:11 PM CDT

The Switch's JoyCon controllers are cheaply made and break easily, and fans are fed up.

Nintendo called out on cheap Switch controllers

There's a reason why Nintendo makes a profit on every Switch sold: the device is relatively cheap to make, and if you've ever held one, you can definitely see where they saved cash. Way back in my 2017 Nintendo Switch review I noticed how flimsy the system felt. The JoyCons in particular felt (and still feel) rather weak and janky, as if they'd malfunction quickly after heavy use.

Now thousands of gamers are complaining about JoyCon issues. Extended use is causing the wiggly and cheap analog sticks to drift in-game, which significantly disrupts play as gamers have to fight the controller and try to compensate for the wonky sticks. After all the first rule of playing a game is actually being able to control it.

New Switch refresh has 9 hours battery life, same specs

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jul 17, 2019 11:18 AM CDT

Today Nintendo's Japanese site revealed a new Switch model that improves battery life by almost 40% over the current version, but the specs are the same.

New Switch refresh has 9 hours battery life, same specs

On the heels of announcing a new $199 handheld-only Switch Lite, the regular Switch is getting a mid-cycle refresh that likely uses the same chip. But don't expect the fabled Switch Pro with beefier performance. This new model is not an iterative upgrade like the PS4 Pro with extra horsepower. It's basically like a PS4 Slim with small tweaks to improve thermals and quality of life. Nintendo only really upgraded the internal battery to make the console last up to 9 hours in Handheld Mode (which is pretty impressive). According to past Wall Street Journal reports, Nintendo also might've tacked on an OLED screen for good measure.

Nintendo is vague with exact technical details (they always are), but we expect the new Switch HAC-001(-01) model uses a shrunken 16nm Tegra X1 chip for boosted efficiency across the board. This means the new model should not only be more power efficient, but could be quieter and cooler when docked to avoid the annoying console heat warping.

Gamestop to transform stores into retro arcades

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jul 17, 2019 8:24 AM CDT

In a bid to save its ailing retail business, Gamestop wants to make its stores more friendly for actual gaming sessions.

Gamestop to transform stores into retro arcades

Gamestop needs a win right now. The company recently suffered a huge $500 million loss driven by low game and hardware sales. To halt the coffin nails, Gamestop announced that it's signed a partnership with turnaround experts R/GA to dramatically rebrand its stores into actual hangouts for gamers. This includes retro arcade-style setups where you can try out games before you buy and even competitive tournaments--possibly even LAN matches.

Essentially Gamestop wants to turn into an early 2000's gaming cafe that also sells games.

2mm tiny-bots to regenerate your health from the inside out

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Jul 17, 2019 3:00 AM CDT

Perhaps the future of human health benefits will come in the form of tiny robots that assist your health problems from the inside your body.

2mm tiny-bots to regenerate your health from the inside out

The above video has been released onto the official Georgia Tech YouTube Channel and showcases what is has been called a "bristle-bot". The bot is only 2mm (about 0.08in) in length, weighs 5mg and can move at about 8mm per second. Not only are the bots, small fast and diversable, but they are made out of lead ziconate titante and have the ability to turn voltage into vibration for movement.

Georgia Tech has developed these bots but at the moment they wouldn't be much benefit to health insitutes as they can only move in one director and can't carry a payload. The end goal of these bots is eventually equipping them with the ability to jump and swim. Once these goals are completed and implemented, we could see these bots being adopted to combat health problems and fix people from inside their bodies out.

Mars' past climate proves it had enough time to develop life

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Jul 17, 2019 1:00 AM CDT

Humans are continuously attempting to map the stars and gain a better understanding of the planets we have in our solar system. One of those planets that are in our understanding slow cooker is our very own red planet, Mars.

Mars' past climate proves it had enough time to develop life

Scientists are hell-bent on attempting to figure out if Mars was home to its very own version of life and now a recent discovery coming out MSL Curiosity regarding a specific Mars landmark and how it could of potentially been the spot life developed. MSL Curiosity is Mars Space Laboratory, a space probe mission with a goal of discovering more about Mars and if life was ever at home on the planet.

Christopher House is a Professor of Geosciences at Penn State University, he is involved within NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission and in a press release from Penn State University he talked about the discoveries made in Mars' Gale Crater. "Gale Crater appears to have been a lake environment. The water would have persisted for a million years or more." The team managed to locate a mudstone in the crater and also find that "the whole system, including the groundwater that ran through it, lasted much longer, perhaps even a billion or more years."
