Flat Earther dies in $18,000 homemade rocket trying to prove theory

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Feb 25, 2020 1:05 AM CST

A man that was a massive advocate for the Flat Earth Theory has tragically died in his homemade rocket that crashed landed into the desert.

Flat Earther dies in $18,000 homemade rocket trying to prove theory

The man was "Mad" Mike Hughes, who built homemade rockets with limited funding for a Science Channel series called "Homemade Astronauts". The series' aim was to document the adventures of rookie rocket designers. Hughes' goal for his homemade rocket was to prove to the world that Earth was in fact a flat disc by viewing it from space himself. This also wasn't Hughes' first attempt at reaching space, back in 2014 the homemade astronaut reached a height of 1,374ft, then in 2018 he reached 1,875ft.

The rocket was steam powered and during his launch in 2020 the chute detached, causing him to collide with the Barstow, Californian desert at an extremely high velocity. The rocket was also not tested correctly as Hughes didn't have the funding that NASA or SpaceX has, instead he had $18,000 sourced from fellow flat Earthers and extreme levels of confidence in his creation. Flat Earth advocates have been beating the drum that the Earth is disc shaped since we realised that the Earth was spherical, much like all the other planets/exoplanets.

61% of Americans want UFO files declassified revealing the truth

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Feb 25, 2020 12:32 AM CST

The United Kingdom decided to release a large portion of UFO related documents to the public, under the Freedom of Information act. This decision has no doubt sparked interest of UFO's globally, but what do Americans think?

61% of Americans want UFO files declassified revealing the truth

Market research firm, Piplsay has posted a new article regarding the mystery behind UFO's and whether or not Americans would like to see the disclosure happen in their country as well. According to the paper, which polled 30,741 Americans, around 61% of those who were polled want the American government to follow in the footsteps of the UK government and disclose what they have to the public. Out of those 30,000+ people, 27% of them didn't want to the files disclosed, and 12% said they don't care what happens.

The paper also says that around 58% of those that were polled think that the American government is investigating alien life. 25% of the Americans believe that the US government isn't investigating alien life and 17% aren't sure what they are doing. Around 27% of Americans think that UFO sightings are real, while 34% of them are a bit unsure about what their answer is. Piplsay also polled 4,161 people in the UK, and it was found that 60% of those people are excited about the disclosure of the "X-Files", versus the 28% of those people believing the disclosure will cause "madness".

TikTok influencers can make up to $1 million per post

Anthony Garreffa | Internet & Websites | Feb 24, 2020 11:16 PM CST

If you want to make big money these days, being an influencer can mean you can make many decades of regular income in a single video -- if you're popular enough. TikTok influencers, at least some of them, could be making upwards of $1 million per post.

Morning Consult's new research suggests that some TikTok influencers have the power to charge $1 milion per post, with many popular "TikTokers" charging $200,000 per post if htey're able to promote and colleborate with the right brands. UK games company Online Casinos reports that TikTok influencers could be (and I'm sure will be, and even some right now are) making $1 million per post by next year.

Right now, the "most marketable TikToker" is 17-year-old singer Loren Gray, who is reportedly making upwards of $200,000 per post. She has over 38 million followers on TikTok, making her one of the most-followed accounts on the Chinese video sharing app. She posts daily videos on TikTok, has over 2 billion likes across her posts, and has secured deals with the likes of Virgin Records and Capital Records.

Elon Musk seeks SpaceX funding, company valued at $36 billion

Anthony Garreffa | Science, Space, & Robotics | Feb 24, 2020 10:31 PM CST

SpaceX is wanting to raise another $250 million in new funding according to CNBC, with the new cash seeing Elon Musk's space-venturing company worth around $36 billion.

The $36 billion valuation is a $2.5 billion increase in the last time the reported valuation came in, with Elon Musk seeing SpaceX injected with around $1.33 billion across 2019 from 3 different rounds of fundraising. SpaceX has rounded up $3 billion or so in funding over the years, but it's no wonder as it continues to push the boundaries of technology and dominate beyond our pale blue dot.

NASA awarded SpaceX over $3.1 billion to develop the Crew Dragon capsule that the company built to take astronauts to the International Space Station, with Musk saying SpaceX has spent "hundreds of millions of dollars" of its own funds to develop Crew Dragon.

Hot Wheels unveils RC Tesla Cybertruck, includes cracked window vinyl

Anthony Garreffa | Electric Vehicles & Cars | Feb 24, 2020 10:05 PM CST

Tesla might have had fans excited for its electric Cybertruck, but now you can get your hands-on one for just $20 or $400 -- the Hot Wheels RC Cybertruck, that is. Tesla has had over 500,000 orders for its new Cybertruck already, too.

Hot Wheels unveils RC Tesla Cybertruck, includes cracked window vinyl

Hot Wheels recently unveiled a new 1:64 scale RC Cybertruck that it will be selling for $20, while the larger 1:10 scale RC Cybertruck costs $400. Both of the new RC Cybertruck's will begin shipping in December 2020, they will be limited editions, and will be available until they're sold out -- which is happening very quick.

The smaller 1:64 version of the Tesla Cybertruck is the size of a normal Hot Wheels car, with two driving speeds and less moving parts -- both of the new RC Cybertruck Hot Wheels cars were designed with the assistance of Tesla. Better yet, the larger 1:10 RC Cybertruck even includes something special -- a "cracked window vinyl sticker", a laugh at the on-stage slip up that saw a shattered Cybertruck window during its unveil and detailing of how strong the car was.

Japan ushers in 10Gbps internet service for only $55 per month

Anthony Garreffa | Connectivity & Cloud | Feb 24, 2020 9:39 PM CST

Japanese ISPs are now offering super-fast 10Gbps internet connections, with NTT East and NTT West (Nippon Telegraph And Telephone) providing people with 10Gbps internet for just $55 per month.

Japan ushers in 10Gbps internet service for only $55 per month

10Gbps is pretty damn insane as it'll offer users over 1GB/sec download speeds, but you probably won't get those speeds for a variety of reasons. You'll need a SSD that can drive over 1GB/sec read/writes, with SATA III maxing out at 600MB/sec you're going to need an NVMe-based SSD capable of multiple gigabytes per second of speeds... for your internet connection.

The super-fast FLET's Hikari Cross compatible router is there for your 10Gbps internet service needs, costing around $4.48 per month on top of your $55 internet connection. You will have 10Gbps support as well as Wi-Fi 6 support, so you're looked after in both wired, and wireless connectivity at high speeds.

AMD Big Navi specs: 5120 cores, 24GB HBM2e at 2TB/sec memory bandwidth

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Feb 24, 2020 9:11 PM CST

AMD is hard at work on its new Big Navi GPU, and now we have a fresh new rumor that is very exciting -- as it teases some truly monster specs that could really shake up the camp at Team Green, at least until Ampere is here.

AMD Big Navi specs: 5120 cores, 24GB HBM2e at 2TB/sec memory bandwidth

The new report is coming from 'CyberPunkCat' on Twitter that reportedly has sources at SK Hynix that have provided him with an information sheet on the specifications of Big Navi -- including an insane 24GB of HBM2e memory that has an even-more-insane 2GB/sec+ of memory bandwidth.

The new spec sheet teases Big Navi with a much larger 5120 shading units, 320 TMUs, 96 ROPs, 80 compute units and 12MB of L2 cache. But it's the gigantic 24GB of new HBM2e memory on a 4096-bit memory bus spitting out a huge 2048GB/sec (2TB/sec) of memory bandwidth.

Alan Wake was originally an episodic game series

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 24, 2020 7:13 PM CST

Alan Wake was almost an episodic game with its parts sold separately, but Microsoft scrapped that plan in favor of the more traditional retail sales model.

Alan Wake was originally an episodic game series

According to Xbox exec Phil Spencer, Microsoft's original vision for Alan Wake was more like reading a book than playing through a big game. The project was almost a series of smaller bite-sized games that would've been sold and released a la carte on the Xbox Store. That really wasn't the best way to launch the game, though, and instead opted to combine everything onto one disc and release in stores.

"When we started on Alan Wake we wanted to make it an episodic game. In fact, if you play through the game you can actually kind of see the structure of the episodes in the game. You know, it's about an author writing a book and the chapters and it all kind of made sense," Phil Spencer said in a recent interview with the Game Maker's Notebook.

In an era where publishers make millions from re-selling games on new platforms, CD Projekt RED is taking a novel approach to cross-gen game purchases.

Cyberpunk 2077 ownership carries forward to Xbox Series X

Today CD Projekt RED announced that Cyberpunk 2077's ownership will carry forward between console generations. For example, if you buy Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One, you won't have to re-buy it again if CDPR releases a next-gen exclusive port.

"Gamers should never be forced to purchase the same game twice or pay for upgrades. Owners of Cyberpunk 2077 for Xbox One will receive the Xbox Series X upgrade for free when available," CDPR said on Twitter.

Xbox Series X enhancement patches will upgrade current-gen games

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 24, 2020 6:19 PM CST

All Xbox One games are playable on the Xbox Series X, but developers can roll out enhancement patches to upgrade current-gen games with next-gen performance.

Xbox Series X enhancement patches will upgrade current-gen games

Today Microsoft confirmed two major Xbox Series X backward compatibility features we'd predicted for a while: The next-gen console will natively upscale and play all legacy compatible games better than ever, and devs can add new forward-compatibility patches that update current-gen games to harness the full power of the system's highly-synergized hardware.

Microsoft is careful to say developers have full control on whether or not their games get enhanced on Xbox Series X. Given the console's massive power leap and capability over the Xbox One, devs have incredible potential to breathe new life into their games.

Xbox Series X natively plays all Xbox games better

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 24, 2020 4:35 PM CST

Microsoft's new Xbox Series X console will natively play all backward compatibility games better and optimize them with its boosted GPU and CPU hardware.

Xbox Series X natively plays all Xbox games better

Today Microsoft confirmed something I've said from the beginning: Next-gen consoles are both extensions and evolutions of the current generation. The next-gen Xbox SX will play four generations' worth of Xbox games, hearkening all the way back to the OG Xbox era, all of which will play and look better than ever before.

The Xbox Series X will have its own built-in boost mode functionality that automatically and natively upscales the performance of all supported games across the Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One eras. This means all games will run better on the Xbox Series X, and older titles in particular will benefit from enhanced frame rates, better load times, reduced screen tearing, and adjusted resolution.

Xbox Series X 12 TFLOP GPU confirmed, 4x Xbox One CPU and 8x GPU power

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Feb 24, 2020 3:48 PM CST

Today Microsoft revealed more Xbox Series X specs, confirming a powerful 12TFLOP RDNA 2-powered GPU on AMD's Big Navi refresh while showing just how big the leap from current- to next-gen actually is.

Xbox Series X 12 TFLOP GPU confirmed, 4x Xbox One CPU and 8x GPU power

Contrary to the recent leaked specs, the Xbox Series X will have a 12 TFLOP GPU that's better than any current Navi GPU on the market, reinforcing Microsoft's original "double the Xbox One X's GPU" statements. With its new heavily customized 7nm AMD SoC, the Xbox Series X's GPU is eight times as powerful as an Xbox One, and it's Zen 2 CPU is four times as powerful as the lower-end Jaguar CPU found in the original launch Xbox One.

US lost nearly a billion dollars worth of weapons & equipment in Syria

Jak Connor | Business, Financial & Legal | Feb 24, 2020 12:33 AM CST

A new report by the Department of Defence has revealed that the United States has failed to account for $715.8 million dollars worth of weapons and equipment while in Syria.

US lost nearly a billion dollars worth of weapons & equipment in Syria

Members of the Special Operations Joint Task Force-Operations Inherent Resolve (SOJTF-OIR), which is apart of the United States' Combined Joint Task Force in Syria, purportedly "did not maintain comprehensive lists of all equipment purchased and received". These weapons and equipment were supplied to the United States and allies during the years of 2017 and 2018. Not only were weapons and equipment not accounted for, but some of the weapons and equipment that were accounted for suffered rust due to them not being correctly stored.

The report says that this rust happened because of "SOJTF-OIR personnel did not divest or dispose of CTEF-S equipment, which led to overcrowding at the BPC Kuwait warehouse". The Department of Defence report doesn't state if the 'lost' weapons and equipment ended up in the hands of Daesh and Al-Qaeda affiliates, but according to the Military Times some of it did "battlefield losses by partner forces and as a result of Islamic State [Daesh] fighters plundering the armories of U.S.-backed groups in early 2014 as the jihadi group surged across Iraq and Syria".

Boston Mayor wants Sony to come back to PAX East

Sony recently announced it would skip PAX East in Boston, Massachusetts because of potential coronavirus risks, cancelling big events like a hands-on gameplay demo of The Last of Us Part II in the process. Boston's Mayor Marty Walsh wants the billion-dollar games-maker to change its mind and come back to the show. Walsh's motivations are an attempt to re-vitalize the annual games showcase that brings lots of tourism to Boston, and to reverse the cultural stigma that the coronavirus has caused.

"As a large, international company, you have an opportunity to set a good example. As a leader in technology, you can show that you are motivated by facts, not fear. As a leader in gaming and culture, you can show that you believe in connection, not isolation," Mayor Walsh said in a letter to Sony's CEO Kenichiro Yoshida obtained by WCVB.

Here's our battle plan for 'planet-killing' asteroids hitting Earth

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Feb 23, 2020 1:36 AM CST

One of the biggest problems we all face on Earth is if a large asteroid decides to line up Earth. It's an even bigger problem if that asteroid is so large that it falls into the category of "planet-killing".

Here's our battle plan for 'planet-killing' asteroids hitting Earth

So, in the event of one of those asteroids making its way over to Earth, how do we defend ourselves as a planet? MIT researchers have announced a battle plan for dealing with a "planet-killing" asteroid being on a collision course with Earth. According to the new paper, there are three options for missions that could be prepared in reasonably short notice. The first is "type 0", and is when a single, heavy spacecraft is fired at the asteroid using all information gathered from Earth to knock it off course.

The second is "type 1" mission, and that is when a scout craft is launched first to examine the asteroid. With the data gathered from the scout craft, humans back on Earth would be able to launch an impactor craft more accurately. The third option is "type 2" mission, which is when an impactor craft is launched at the same time as the scout craft. The scout craft then examines the asteroid after the initial impact, then relays data back for a second impactor that should finish the asteroid off.

Deep Space radio burst pattern could be aliens, says Harvard scientist

Jak Connor | Science, Space, & Robotics | Feb 23, 2020 12:31 AM CST

It was only a few weeks ago that astronomers announced that they received what is called Fast Radio Bursts from deep space. Now, a Harvard scientist and astronomer have said that it could be aliens who are sending the signals.

Deep Space radio burst pattern could be aliens, says Harvard scientist

If you don't know what Fast Radio Bursts (FRB) is, here's a quick summary of what has happened so far. In January 2020, astronomers picked up FRB's from deep space, and while this is originally a rare finding, these signals are usually traced back to a cosmic event such as stars colliding. What puzzled astronomers were that these new FRB's were arriving in a regular pattern.

The pattern was that the FRB goes through a four-day cycle of regular activity almost every hour, then after those four days, it would go dormant for 12 days. The researchers also said that the source of the FRB would sometimes skip it's four-day activity period and only let out a single burst. This discovery broke all explanations towards for what the source of the FRB could be.
