Gears of War 4 season pass includes 24 maps, two releasing per month

Derek Strickland | Apr 25, 2016 12:15 AM CDT

An accidental Xbox Store listing reveals what Coalition has planned for Gears of War 4's season pass DLC.

Gears of War 4 season pass includes 24 maps, two releasing per month

Gears of War 4's season pass will give players access to a total of 24 co-op and multiplayer map packs, which Coalition plans to release in waves of two maps per month for a year. That's according to a premature listing on the Xbox Australia storefront, initially spotted by eagle-eyed industry vet Wario64. The season pass also confirms Gears of War 4 will have dedicated servers, and pass owners will get to preview upcoming DLC maps, weapons, and modes before they're released.

"Join this VIP experience and score the following perks: Five exclusive digital items as part of the Vintage VIP Pack; permanent DLC map ownership of over 24 additional maps (two per month for a year) for private play on dedicated servers; an exclusive VIP "Early Access" Playlist that grants a preview to upcoming modes, maps and variants; and six Gear Packs."

Gears of War 4 launches four days early for collector's edition buyers

Derek Strickland | Apr 24, 2016 11:15 PM CDT

Microsoft is offering early access to Gears of War 4 to gamers who buy the $100 Ultimate Edition.

Gears of War 4 launches four days early for collector's edition buyers

If you buy Gears of War 4's $100 Ultimate Edition, you'll be able to play the game four days ahead of everyone else. Renowned industry vet Wario64 caught a quick screenshot of the pre-sale incentive, which was previously live on the Xbox Store, but Microsoft yanked the page shortly after news broke out. The listing was posted on the Xbox Australia site with a $140 AUD price tag, which converts to roughly $108 USD.

"Gears of War 4 Ultimate Edition is your gateway to Early Access for Gears of War 4, allowing you to download the game and start playing Friday, October 7 - four days before the game's standard release date," reads the edition's main page. The Gears of War 4 Ultimate Edition includes a copy of the game and a season pass for all future DLC packs. The season pass includes access to 24 DLC maps, which will be released two per month by Coalition.

DOOM requires 45GB HDD space on the Xbox One

Anthony Garreffa | Apr 24, 2016 10:20 PM CDT

The last time DOOM was in the headlines, was when we reported that the game is a 'slow generic console multiplayer shooter clone'. Well, just how much HDD space does this slow generic console multiplayer shooter clone take up?

According to the official listing on the Xbox One store, DOOM requires 45.04GB HDD space. The PS4 and PC versions shouldn't require much more or less, so we can expect somewhere in the 40-50GB size.

Comparing DOOM to The Division, Ubisoft's open-world RPG took just 32GB, while Xbox One exclusive Halo: The Master Chief Collection chewed up a huge 62GB HDD space.

ESL officially bans YouPorn's eSports team

The Electronics Sports League has banned YouPorn's sponsored eSports team.

ESL officially bans YouPorn's eSports team

YouPorn's official eSports team Team YP is no longer permitted to compete in sanctioned ESL tournaments. The ESL's regulation isn't new, and it prohibits any sponsors of "widely known for pornographic ... or other adult/mature themes and product" from entering teams in ESL events, thus Team YP--and any teams like it--are barred from ESL competitions. An ESL representative reached out to us to clarify that Team YP has been asked by the ESL to change its name or risk being disqualified from events.

"Advertising pornography is not legal in the markets we operate in, and the vast majority of partners we're working with have strict "no drugs, no alcohol, no pornography" rules that we've contractually taken on board. These aren't new rules, but ones that have been in our rulebooks for a long time. We have spoken to Team YP manager earlier this year and in that conversation we've explained the situation and rules in detail, and offered to look for potential alternatives in a bigger group. At the same time, we're consulting with our legal teams about this. We will inform the team and the management as soon as we have any updates," reads a statement provided to TweakTown by the ESL.

What it's like to play Fallout 4 and never leave Sanctuary Hills

Derek Strickland | Apr 24, 2016 12:47 PM CDT

What would it be like to play Fallout 4 and never leave Sanctuary Hills, desperately scrounging for resources and relying on settlers to bring fresh materials in? Is it even possible to have fun, or even actually play like this? One Fallout 4 player proves that you can indeed accomplish such a feat, but it'll turn you into a cruel, reigning despot.

What it's like to play Fallout 4 and never leave Sanctuary Hills

A Redditor named Sloth-King decided to test out the social dynamics of Fallout 4's settlement system and play the game never leaving Sanctuary. Surprisingly, he was quite successful--but it changed him into a horrible tyrant. Sloth-King chronicles his journey as a Wasteland king in a massive Imgurl gallery, displaying what it's like to play Fallout 4 in this manner...and it's pretty eye-opening.

Honestly, it's pretty interesting, and I never thought about trying to do such a thing before--being on PC I tend to just use console commands to instantly zap in anything I'd ever need. Sloth-King's adventure proves just how impressive Bethesda's settlement system is, and how far you can push it.

Hitman GO VR is exclusive to the Oculus Rift and Gear VR

Anthony Garreffa | Apr 24, 2016 4:24 AM CDT

VR is all the rage right now, with Square Enix wanting to jump right into the deep end, teasing Hitman GO in VR at PAX East 2016 over the weekend.

Destructoid were on site, reporting that all of the levels "are the same as they were in the original game, but the camera can now be rotated with analog sticks, and you can zoom in with the controller or by leaning your body forward to take a closer peak at GO's diorama-like environments".

Square Enix has said that Hitman GO VR will be exclusive to Oculus, which means it'll only work on the Rift and Gear VR (Oculus collaborated with Samsung on Gear VR). Hitman GO VR won't hit the PlayStation VR, or the HTC Vive. The company is hoping you'll reach deeper into your wallet to buy the potentially fourth version of the same game, something you might already own on mobile, consoles, and the PC - and now, VR.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst looks SO much better on the PC at 4K

Anthony Garreffa | Apr 24, 2016 12:22 AM CDT

Mirror's Edge Catalyst looks like utter crap on the Xbox One, but on the PC? It looks pretty damn good, especially cranked up to 4K, thanks to some screenshots from DSOGaming.

The site ran the closed beta of Mirror's Edge Catalyst at 4K, where they note that VRAM limitations happen at 4K, with the game requiring more than 6GB of framebuffer. At 1080p, the site reports that they were hitting a minimum framerate of 70FPS on Ultra settings on their GeForce GTX 690.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst is using more of our CPU cores too, thanks to the Frostbite 3 engine scaling across multiple CPU threads more efficiently. There aren't many graphics options to tweak according to DSOGaming, with distance textures "kind of low-res". To finish, the site says that Mirror's Edge Catalyst "looks and play beautifully on the PC, even in its current beta state".

The new DOOM is a 'slow generic console multiplayer shooter clone'

Anthony Garreffa | Apr 23, 2016 7:51 PM CDT

We have been all over DOOM news for the last few months, with our recent stories like the PC version of DOOM being neglected, and the game having the 'trademark id Tech texture streaming issues' on consoles. I don't know how Bethesda and id Software let this happen, but all developers are doing it these days.

Well, on the /r/pcmasterrace subreddit, user 'alkavan' asked "Hey, seriously, can someone actually explain to me what's wrong with the new DOOM? I pre-ordered it but for nice price with b-day discount voucher on GMG. And of-course I would never per-order any game now days, but in 1993 when I actually met a computer DOOM, then DOOM II were one of the few, first games I ever saw on PC. I just had to as a tribute. So am I gonna get lots of COD crap here? fuck (Will mention, I never actually played any modern COD game except first and second one)".

'Laxcc' replied with a golden reply, saying: "People expected fast skillful classic arena multiplayer shooter for PC, they got slow generic console multiplayer shooter clone with grind shit like loadouts etc..". '8oD' replied, adding "You level up, FFS" which is an obviously gameplay trait in today's games. 'Laxcc' replied back, adding: "Leveling/Unlocking etc. in shooters is a shitty feature. If game is good it does not need it. Its a shi**y crutch for nolifers to gain advantage just because they farmed first days by playing 3 days stright without sleep so they can stomp people without requiring player skill or training".

Borderlands 3 confirmed, gets new writer and art director

Derek Strickland | Apr 23, 2016 10:21 AM CDT

At a PAX East panel, Gearbox Software confirmed it will begin development on Borderlands 3 once Battleborn and all its accompanying DLC packs are completely finished.

Borderlands 3 confirmed, gets new writer and art director

"It's no secret, obviously there's going to be another Borderlands," Gearbox's Randy Pitchford said during the panel. "We don't even know if we're going to call it Borderlands 3. We could call it Borderlands 4 for all we know." Mike Neumann will be the lead writer for Borderlands 3, taking the mantle from Anthony Burch, and Scott Kester will helm art direction.

Pitchford went on to tease that we could see Borderlands 3 easter eggs in Battleborn. "There's already a lot of Borderlands easter eggs in Battleborn, but they're all from previous Borderlands games. So what if we put easter eggs for future stuff in the DLC?"

These new Witcher 3: Blood and Wine screens are absolutely enchanting

CD Projekt RED drops a new batch of Witcher 3: Blood and Wine screenshots, showing even more of Toussiant's enchanting world.

These new Witcher 3: Blood and Wine screens are absolutely enchanting

Blood and Wine isn't only the last DLC pack for The Witcher 3, but it also concludes the story of Geralt of Rivia. In order to send off the legendary witcher out with a bang, CD Projekt RED promises that Blood and Wine will be "even better than the main game". Considering how magnificent Witcher 3 already is, this is a pretty hefty claim.

"I can already tell you Blood and Wine is a fascinating story, with every sort of twist and turn you'd expect from our writers," CD Projekt RED's Marcin Momot said in a new update. "Toussaint, the new realm we're creating for the expansion, is unlike anything you've seen in Wild Hunt - carefree and colorful, but your gut never stops telling you that there's some real dark stuff happening underneath all that."

Steam to start accepting bitcoin as valid payment option

Derek Strickland | Apr 23, 2016 7:00 AM CDT

According to a leaked post on Steam's official developer forums, Valve will start accepting Bitcoin crytocurrency as a valid payment option for purchases on the digital storefront.

Steam to start accepting bitcoin as valid payment option

"We are excited to announce that Steam is going to start accepting payments via bitcoin," Valve wrote on the leaked forum post. "We're using an external payment provider to process bitcoin payments to help partners reach more customers on Steam. Bitcoin is becoming an increasingly popular online payment method in some countries, and we're enabling a system that insulates partners from risk and volatility while still providing value to the end customer."

The way it works is Valve will charge users like normal, and the third-party payment provider then converts the charged currency into bitcoin based on a daily currency-to-bitcoin exchange rate. The provider keeps the bitcoin and pays Valve the traditional currency value. This way Valve never holds any bitcoin, and the provider essentially converts and exchanges money for bitcoin.

Blizzard 'failed horrifically' with mysterious Project Titan MMO

Derek Strickland | Apr 23, 2016 4:15 AM CDT

After seven years of development, Blizzard cancelled its ambitious Project Titan MMO in 2014. Now Blizzard dev Jeff Kaplan sheds some light on why Titan collapsed, and how the "devastating failure" inspired the team to create Overwatch.

Blizzard 'failed horrifically' with mysterious Project Titan MMO

"You had a really amazing group that was working on Titan. They were really talented individuals, but we failed horrifically in every way ... In every way that a project can fail. It was devastating," Blizzard's Jeff Kaplan said in a recent interview with GameSpot.

"You had these people who either came from other companies or from within Blizzard, and were used to working on games that were very successful like a World of Warcraft, for example. To go through such a complete and utter failure is very hard for people who are used to experiencing success."

Horizon: Zero Dawn reportedly delayed into 2017

It's practically a tradition in the games industry today for high-profile titles to get delayed, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that Guerrilla Games' post-apocalyptic RPG Horizon: Zero Dawn may not release in 2016. According to renowned industry insider Shinobi602 will be delayed into 2017, with a release on Sony's new PlayStation Neo console (PS4K/PS4.5).

"Well...Horizon: Zero Dawn's getting delayed to early 2017 from what I'm told. Going to look splendid on PS4k though," reads Shinobi602's Tweet.

DOOM's for PC was neglected in the beta, but won't be when released

Jeff Williams | Apr 22, 2016 6:05 PM CDT

The PC version of DOOM wasn't exactly the shining example of graphics tech that it should have been, and that we expect from id Software. They're usually the paragon of PC gaming, advancing graphics tech above and beyond the norm. Recently it seems they've fallen to the wayside and been surpassed by the likes of Crytek and others. id Software hasn't forgotten us PC gamers it seems, they just didn't design the beta to be a showcase of the final graphical specs.

A new blog post by id Software tells us to not fret, because they're just as much PC gamers as they once were, and as we are. "PC gaming is in our DNA here at id. Just like so many of you, we also love to tinker with settings to get the exact experience we want - and every ounce of performance our systems can handle." Robert Duffy, the chief technology officer, said in the post. That being said, the final build will be full of the options that we tend to want and enjoy. And the framerate will be uncapped. They detailed the advanced settings that we'll get to play with, and it's quite extensive.

We're told to expect much more information about the underpinnings of idTech 6. This stuff is really fascinating, and it'll be great to see how the rendering pipeline works and see how, or why, the streaming texture issue happened and how they plan on fixing it for the PC. And to reiterate for everyone (myself included): the framerate won't be locked on PC at launch.

Tekken 7 will have a tournament with a $30,000 prize pool

Jeff Williams | Apr 22, 2016 5:02 PM CDT

Tekken 7 might not quite be released just yet, but Bandai Namco has already announced that they'll be hosting a competitive season when Tekken 7: Fated Retribution does make its way to consoles near us. And if you're brave enough to enter, they're offering up a $30,000 prize pool.

The tournament is entitled King of the Iron Fist and is an event that'll be physically held across North America. They plan on stopping at 16 different cities to set up physical arenas to play in. It'll be absolutely free for anyone who wants to enter and is being conducted in partnership with the Wizard World Con.

The winner at each of those 16 stops will more on to the next round, against each of those 16 winners. Those 16 will then compete to be the overall winner and take home part of that $30,000 prize pool, which will eventually be divvied up amongst those 16.

New Gears of War 4 multiplayer trailer is exceptionally bloody

Jeff Williams | Apr 22, 2016 1:04 PM CDT

The multiplayer mode for Gears of War 4 makes a gore-filled appearance in the latest trailer. They're emphasizing just how ruthless you can be while competing against others in order to receive the best loot. Just as in the past, it's fast-paced and cover-based, but with better graphics.

New Gears of War 4 multiplayer trailer is exceptionally bloody

The multiplayer beta test is going to officially kick-off on the 25th of April, so The Coalition is showing us but a small glimpse of what to expect once we're able to play. The violence is front and center, as might be expected, but there seems to be much more of it than usual. Enemies splatter across the screen in some truly grisly ways. The gore is expected, though, with plenty of new executions. The trailer is also a showcase of the different new maps and modes you can play. Everything should be very familiar to anyone who's played.

Amazon might be experimenting with a Prime-only paywall for games

Jeff Williams | Apr 22, 2016 11:04 AM CDT

Amazon's Prime service, while a paid one, does have a number of really beneficial advantages if you happen to use Amazon frequently. Free two-day shipping, access to Prime-exclusive movies for free and even discounts on the pre-ordering of games, come to mind. It seems that they might be selling some games, direct, only to Prime members, and it's a little confusing.

A small selection of games can only be bought directly from Amazon if you have Prime. That is, if you're looking for FIFA 16, Dishonored: The Definitive Edition, Minecraft, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, Battlefield Hardline, Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor Game of the year, and Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes. Amazon says that being able to buy certain games is a benefit of being a Prime member, even though you can simply buy them from the Marketplace, or somewhere else completely.

Gamesaradar has stumbled across the issue, though I've yet to be able to recreate it through friends that don't have Prime. Even when not signed-in, the desktop site doesn't indicate that it's a "Prime Only" deal. At least the desktop site is devoid of any indication. It could also be region specific, being that the article was written from by someone in the UK. Regardless, if it is indeed a growing trend, then it's odd that they would do such a thing without having, at the very least, a suitable discount that makes it more lucrative to use Amazon instead.

Paid Steam Workshop mods may return

Sean Ridgeley | Apr 22, 2016 9:16 AM CDT

Modder uLLeticaL noticed a change on the Steam Workshop page for his Counter-Strike: Global Offensive map Aim Botz, indicating a paid mods system may be returning to Valve's service. A new message on it reads, "You can subscribe to this item for free because you are the creator or listed as a contributor."

If you attempt to subscribe to it and aren't a creator or contributor, it simply subscribes you as normal, but the above message leads one to believe that could change before long. Other games such as Arma 3 are said to show this message as well.

While paid Workshop mods went down poorly before, uLLeticaL says modders would welcome a donation-based system. Time will tell if that's the case.

Rocket League gets a free weekend with special discounts afterwards

Jeff Williams | Apr 22, 2016 8:00 AM CDT

Rocket League was is one of the best surprises to come out of 2015. Its blend of racing and soccer (or football for those elsewhere) has been a treat for casual and competitive play. Psyonix is running a free promotion this weekend that lets anyone interesting in using automobiles to slam a ball into a net can do so. It started Yesterday, April 21st at 10AM PT and will run through Sunday, April 24th 10am PT.

They say that it's completely free to everyone, regardless of whether you've bought it or not. And after the free weekend, they're discounting it by 40% until 10am on the 25th of April. To sweeten the deal they've also discounted all the various bundles and DLC packs by 20% as well, just in case you'd like a specific skin pack or something else.

Psyonix has been very supportive of their hybrid sports game with several optional DLC packs and quite a few updates that have addressed many different issues. Coming soon, the next update will add a basketball-themed motif to it, letting you try your hand and driving a smaller ball into an even smaller net off the ground. Hoops is coming April 26th for free and for everyone. They've even officially partnered with the NBA to offer an NBA flag pack with 30 different flags. Everyone will get one, at least, for free with the update, however.
