Battlefield 1 looks incredible with color correction, and in 4K

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jul 16, 2016 1:36 AM CDT

Battlefield 1 is already looking like one of the best-looking games to be released in 2016, but it looks washed out - unfortunately, that's what war probably looked like back 100 years ago, and that's the look DICE went for.

YouTuber 'jackfrags' has released a new video from the Battlefield 1 closed alpha phase, with some color correction applied using the BF1 Cinematic Tools released by Hatti Watti. Color correction was used, and the HUD was completely removed - providing an amazing look at a custom Battlefield 1.

Let's hope that DICE have seen this, and provide an option for the more colorful, HUD-less Battlefield 1 when it launches later this year. Remember to watch the video in 4K 60FPS, as it's truly glorious.

NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1060 for notebooks should be as fast as desktop

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Jul 16, 2016 12:05 AM CDT

We're not far away from the launch of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 1060, and we're already hearing about the mobile variant, which is reportedly not going to have much of a performance difference between the desktop and notebook parts.

Polish website Purepc is reporting that the only difference between the GeForce GTX 1060 on the notebook and desktop is the clock speeds, where they said: "The only difference between the GeForce GTX 1060, for laptops and desktop version, will be reduced core speed. 1405 MHz instead of 1506 MHz in the basic mode, and 1671 MHz instead of 1709 MHz GPU Boost 3.0".

If this turns out to be true, the GTX 1060 will usher in a new performance standard for gaming notebooks, where 1080p 60FPS shouldn't a problem. Now we need to know the pricing on GTX 1060-powered gaming notebooks, which should be revealed in the very near future.

AMD's next-gen Vega 10, Vega 11 GPUs spotted in recent OpenCL driver

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Jul 15, 2016 11:27 PM CDT

AMD has released its Polaris 10-based Radeon RX 480 into the wild, with the next-gen Vega architecture in the oven, and ready for early 2017. But now we're hearing rumors of the Vega 10 and Vega 11 GPUs, in the middle of 2016.

AMD's next-gen Vega 10, Vega 11 GPUs spotted in recent OpenCL driver

In the new OpenCL driver, a few new chips were discovered under 'GFX9': Greenland, Raven1X, Vega10 and Vega 11. Greenland is something that has been swinging around the rumor mill for a while now, a new GPU that will reportedly rock 4096 stream processors, and a new SOC v15 architecture.

Vega on the other hand is a "high-end architecture for high-end gamers" according to AMD, and has an early 2017 release window. Vega will be the first GPU to utilize the faster HBM2 memory standard, which is something NVIDIA is using on its professional side of things on the Tesla P100 graphics card. Microsoft is serious about 'ushering true 4K gaming' with Xbox Scorpio

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jul 15, 2016 10:29 PM CDT

Microsoft could be ready to fight in a new way with its upcoming Xbox Scorpio console, which will be powered by a new semi-custom design from AMD, where we should see it featuring Polaris-based GPU cores. This power will unleash 4K gaming in the console space, which hasn't been done before - at least not by Sony or Microsoft.

Aaron Greenberg, the Head of Xbox Games Marketing has talked about Project Scorpio in his latest podcast, where he said that it's a really exciting project that has huge support from Microsoft partners like DICE and Bethesda, as well as Microsoft's own internal studios. Greenberg didn't say much that is new, but he did reiterate that Microsoft is serious about ushering in true 4K gaming.

I don't think we're going to see full 4K gaming on the new Xbox, but rather 1080p 60FPS gaming that is upscaled in a way that is better than anything we've seen previously. I wrote a report about AMD acquiring HiAlgo, a firm that works on upscaling technology that is actually very impressive.

Watch Dogs 2 has 'significantly' better graphics, is also twice as big

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jul 15, 2016 9:12 PM CDT

Ubisoft found itself in hot water over the downgraded graphics in Watch Dogs, and it looks like the publisher has learnt its lesson for its sequel, which is due out very soon.

During an interview with The Evening Standard, Ubisoft Montreal's Dominic Guay - Senior Producer on the Watch Dogs franchise said that the world of Watch Dogs 2 has much bigger than the original. Guay added: "Watch Dogs 2 uses an evolved version of the first opus technology. With many years passing doing R&D on this hardware generation, we were able to expend the game's graphics significantly".

Guay also said: "The San Francisco Bay area is a great place to have long view distances with high detail and atmospheric effects. The lighting and effects are more realistic and the world much more detailed and dynamic. The game world is more than twice as big as the open world in Watch Dogs. But beyond size, it is much more of a varied, dynamic, and flavourful setting. It encompasses San Francisco, Oakland, part of Marine county, and a scaled down version of Silicon Valley".

Behind the scenes 'Star Wars: Rogue One' reel hits the web

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Jul 15, 2016 8:36 PM CDT

With the annual 'Star Wars' celebration currently underway in England, Lucasfilm and Disney turn fans attention to this year's release of the anthology film 'Rogue One' in an attempt to convince fans all is OK with the project after unsettling talk of extensive reshoots broke out last month. By the looks of the stunning three minute behind the scenes reel released this morning, they won't have to much work on their hands.

Set just before the events of 'A New Hope', 'Rogue One' is set to follow the band of courageous Rebel troops who stole the plans for the first Death Star, which allowed the alliance to pinpoint its weakness. Starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn and Donnie Yen, the film will serve as the first film outside of the numbered episodes which make up the Skywalker saga.

'Rogue One' hits 2D, 3D and IMAX screens worldwide on December 16th.

Google launches Fiber sign-ups in Charlotte, North Carolina

Sean Ridgeley | Connectivity & Cloud | Jul 15, 2016 6:42 PM CDT

Last year, Google announced Fiber was making its way to another American city in Charlotte, North Carolina. Today, sign-ups for residents and businesses begin: anyone living in Highland Creek can put their name in for Fiber 1000 + TV, Fiber 1000, or Fiber 100 plans ($130, $70, and $50/mo, respectively), with a Fiber phone option for all plans. Meanwhile, eligible small businesses can benefit from one of three new business plans, each debuting in Charlotte.

Google says it will of course expand coverage to more neighbourhoods in the city, but it will take time.

The company is also working on bringing a budget 25mbps service for just $15/mo to financially challenged citizens in Charlotte, as well as gigabit internet free of charge to select public and affordable housing buildings. Google says this venture will "build on existing investments, like our support of digital inclusion fellows at the Urban League, Charlotte Mecklenburg Housing Partnership, and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library."

Homeade Iron Man glove can light things on fire

Sean Ridgeley | Modding | Jul 15, 2016 2:09 PM CDT

An Iron Man glove created by laser gadget maker Patrick Priebe is 3,000 times more powerful than a typical laser pointer. As shown by Wired in the demo video below, that's enough to let you indulge your inner pyromaniac a little by igniting cigarettes, ping pong balls, and matches. You can also show up to children's birthday parties and make them cry by popping balloons with it (that's a win my book).

If you want to get your hands-on one, contract Priebe through his official website. Although after the press he's been getting, you may have to wait awhile for a response.

Fallout 1.5: Resurrection gives you a 'new old-school Fallout' to play

Sean Ridgeley | Gaming | Jul 15, 2016 12:28 PM CDT

Whether you're a grognard who likes the video games "how they used to be" or you like the newschool and the oldschool, Fallout 1.5: Resurrection is here. A mod, Resurrection takes place between 90s darlings Fallout and Fallout 2 and offers a new story to play through. The setting: New Mexico.

It's been in production for 10 years, and features about as much content as the original Fallout (which is to say a lot). Among what's included: new characters, locales, and quests, and multiple quest solutions.

Resurrection requires only a copy of Fallout 2 and the mod itself to get started. No need to fiddle around with mods either, as it already includes the High Resolution Patch and the Sfall tweak pack for the most pleasant experience possible.

Sony's new PlayStation 4K costs $439, coming in October, says Amazon

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jul 15, 2016 10:40 AM CDT

Sony's new 4K-ready PlayStation Neo console may release this year for a surprisingly cheap price point, if recent Amazon listings can be believed.

Sony's new PlayStation 4K costs $439, coming in October, says Amazon

According to VG Leaks, Amazon Spain has listed a curious PlayStation 4 console for 399 Euros ($399 since tax is included in Euro prices) and an October 13, 2016 release date. So it looks like the PS4 Neo could launch alongside the PlayStation VR--Neo and Morpheus together. The retailer has pulled the listing shortly after the news broke out, adding even more plausibility that the listing was indeed accurate. Given Amazon Spain already has the original PS4 listed, the leaked listing could be for the new PS4K or the upcoming PS4 Slim model.

Although we don't know exactly when the PS4 Neo will launch, there's a lot of evidence that points towards an October release. An October launch lines up perfectly with the timeline put forth by French games distributor Innelec, who said the PS4K would launch in 2016. If recently leaked Sony internal slides are genuine, Sony has set a mandate that all PS4 games released in or after October must support the new PS4 Neo--further corroborating a release date.

Telltale's Batman series debuts in August, disc version incoming

Telltale Games has revealed that its new Batman series adaptation will launch in August, and a physical retail version will be sold in stores.

Telltale's Batman series debuts in August, disc version incoming

The first chapter of Telltale's anticipated five-part Batman game series will release digitally in August, with a disc-based "season pass disc" launching on September 13 on current and last-gen consoles. No PC physical SKU was spotted. The physical version will come with the first Batman episode baked-in and unlocks digital access to all four future episodes for free. No pricing for the physical versions has been announced, but we're guessing it'll be $49.99 or so.

The studio plans to announce the official release date next week alongside a world premiere trailer for the Caped Crusader's new adventure. Attendees of the San Diego Comic-Con will be able to see the world premiere trailer on July 23 with a special on-stage screening accompanied by Batman voice actor Troy Baker. If you're heading to SDCC and want in on the event, be sure to email Telltale Games at this address telltale_batman_sdcc@telltalegames.com and let them know.

Third 'Mortal Kombat' film still in development

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Jul 14, 2016 7:28 PM CDT

It's been 21 years since the release of the original 'Mortal Kombat' film, which was a reasonable success for Warner Bros, proving that video game adaptations could be successful, after 'Super Mario Bros.' ended up a huge turkey for Disney. It's 1998 follow up 'Mortal Kombat: Annihilation' wasn't so well received though, so the feature film franchise was put on ice. But it looks like that might soon change.

Speaking to Loaded, 'Highlander' star Christopher Lambert says that development is continuing and "it will be very different... we are going to be travelling through time but in a very special way. So imagine characters having a battle in the middle of London and then whoosh, you smash through a window and find yourself on the hood of a New York cab".

No word yet on when the film might hit screens, but odds are its still a few years off yet.

Leaked PS4 Neo slides from Sony reveal specs, 4K upscaling strategies

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jul 14, 2016 4:40 PM CDT

Although Sony has officially confirmed the PlayStation 4K's existence, there's still plenty of unknowns about the new console, mainly with how it'll handle 4K upscaling and if the performance discrepancy compared to old PS4 games. Now a batch of purportedly leaked slides from Sony answer a few of these questions, and also seem to confirm the leaked PS4K specs as accurate. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that these documents might be the leaks that Giant Bomb cited in their PS4 Neo reveal.

Leaked PS4 Neo slides from Sony reveal specs, 4K upscaling strategies

Note: We have no way of confirming if the following slides are accurate or not. Take the following content with a grain of salt.

The slides start off by telling us what we already know: the PS4 Neo will co-exist with original PS4s, with the same games, same PSN presence, etc. Then Sony goes on to corroborate what we've heard about the new games: all games after October 2016 will need to have two modes, a Base Mode for original PS4 consoles, and a Neo Mode for PS4 Neo, which enables 4K upscaling, 1080p 60FPS, etc. The slides reinforce that you won't have to have a 4K TV to play games in Neo Mode, and HDTV owners will enjoy "higher, more stable framerates" as well as the expected higher fidelity and "additional graphics features" with the PS4 Neo.

NES Mini: Everything you need to know

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jul 14, 2016 3:34 PM CDT

Nintendo is bringing back the old-school 1985 Nintendo Entertainment System in a new smaller NES Mini form factor with original games built-in, but there's more to the system that you need to know.

NES Mini: Everything you need to know

We already know that the Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition (dubbed the NES Mini) costs $59.99, comes with 30 games baked-in, hooks up to HDTVs via HDMI, and launches on November 11. But most gamers might not realize that the NES Mini features no online capabilities, meaning it can't download new NES games via Nintendo's eShop.

This means the NES Mini's games library will remain static and a ton of classic titles won't be supported. Considering the NES has some 713 games in its library across North America and Europe, this leaves out a huge amount of games. This also means we can't connect the NES Mini to our Nintendo Accounts. Nintendo likely won't be making small tiny SD-card sized cartridges for extra NES Mini games--that'd be quite awesome.

What do you actually do in No Man's Sky? Sony has our answer

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Jul 14, 2016 1:13 PM CDT

Sony has launched a new video series aimed at answering the age-old question gamers have had for years: what do you actually do in No Man's Sky?

What do you actually do in No Man's Sky? Sony has our answer

No Man's Sky has four pillars of gameplay: explore, trade, fight and survive. The latest video highlights the first--and arguably most majestic and interesting aspect of the game--exploration. Remember that No Man's Sky has a near-infinite universe made up of "18 quintillion planets to be explored across billions of miles of space," ensuring that every single planet is completely different than the last one. Hello Games has wasted no opportunities in demoing the insurmountably massive space-sim on numerous occasions, and the sixteen-man studio is now underlining those experiences in preparation for the game's launch next month.

We've also done our part to explain what No Man's Sky has to offer in our massive list of everything players can do in the game. Essentially No Man's Sky is a game where your only real objective is to travel to the center of the universe, exploring millions of planets and unfolding your experiences as you play. The planets are the main selling point; everything from the bizarre plant-life and strange alien creatures are procedurally generated, offering "limitless variety" from an exploration standpoint.

Colorful is aiming its new iGame series of GTX 1060-based cards at gamers who don't want to throw their wallets at the prices of the current GeForce GTX 1070 and GTX 1080, while offering great performance for 1080p 60FPS gameplay. Colorful's new iGame GTX 1060 series is led by the iGameGTX1060 X-TOP-6G, which has base/boost clocks of 1620/1847MHz, respectively. It will also feature 5+2-phase IPP power.

Nintendo is launching a mini NES with 30 built-in games for $59.99

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jul 14, 2016 8:00 AM CDT

Nintendo is riding the marketing wave of Pokemon GO right now, with the announcement of its NES Classic Edition. Nintendo's upcoming NES Classic Edition is a mini NES system with 30 built-in games, and it's going to sell like hotcakes with its $59.99 price.

The NES Classic Edition launches in November, and will connect to your TV through HDMI, and it'll also include a controller that will be designed to work just like the original NES controller. The new controller will also connect to a Wii Remote, which will allow you to play Virtual Console games on a Wii, or Wii U console.

The new NES Classic Edition will feature something we all wish the original NES did: multiple suspend points, which will mean you won't need to find passwords when you want to start playing a game again. Nintendo will be making its NES Classic Edition available on November 11 for just $59.99, with the 30 games included:

Tim Sweeney: Gabe Newell is 'the smartest person in the PC industry'

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Jul 14, 2016 7:36 AM CDT

Now, you and I already know that our Lord and Savior Gabe Newell is what makes the sun rise and set every day... but what about all of the other people in the world? Well, Tim Sweeney knows it, too.

The Epic Games co-founder said during an interview with GameSpot recently on the topic of Oculus and its closed ecosystem that "Gabe Newell is the smartest person in the PC industry because he fundamentally realizes it. These gamers are smart; they know what's happening. When companies do this sort of thing, it pisses them off. Everybody wants to have control over the computer. They want to have complete freedom to install anything from any source. They don't want any company's product forcing them to do things against their will".

Sweeney chatted with GameSpot about Oculus and its closed ecosystem, which is where Gabe was injected into the conversation. Considering Gabe runs Valve, which owns Steam and even the Vive headset - as well as countless money makers like the Half-Life, Counter-Strike, DOTA2, and other franchises - his words have weight.

Seagate to slash over 8000 jobs in the next 12 months

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Jul 14, 2016 6:47 AM CDT

Seagate is the latest company to announce massive layoffs, with the HDD giant set to slash another 6500 jobs across its workforce in the US, Asia and EMEA regions.

The new culling over at Seagate represents around 14% of its global workforce, which will join the 1600 people being let go as part of its restructuring plans announced last month. Seagate is set to save around $164 million from the layoffs, but it's also expected to lower its expenditures going into the future.

Seagate has also recently said it will be reducing its manufacturing capabilities, from around 55-60 million HDDs per quarter, to just 35-40 million per quarter. The company hasn't said how it will be reducing its manufacturing capabilities in detail, so we should expect to hear more news on that front in the near future.
