Star Citizen boss: it's the 'best damn everything sim'

Anthony Garreffa | Gaming | Sep 28, 2016 11:25 PM CDT

We all know Chris Roberts can say some pretty crazy things, where during my exclusive interview with him at PAX Australia 2014, Roberts said "I don't care about consoles" when it came to Star Citizen.

The guys over at Gamers Nexus recently visited the CIG offices, talking with Roberts where he said: "Right. It's not even 'best damn space sim' anymore, it's 'best damn everything sim.' Especially with the way the procedural planets [...] we were able to do that with everyone's support, which allowed us to open up the Frankfurt office and hire up people that are incredibly talented".

He continued: "That's the iterative way that Star Citizen works, because I wasn't thinking we were going to be able to do what we are going to be able to do now, but the additional play possibilities that come with it and what players will be able to do by themselves, it's really exciting. You've opened up a much bigger palette of things you can do because you have planetary locations, you can do things, recover things, rescue people, create your own little place - whatever you want to do.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti teased for January 2017

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Sep 28, 2016 10:16 PM CDT

If the massive array of Volta GPU architecture leaks weren't enough yesterday, we had teases of the purported Pascal 2.0 refresh coming in 2017, as well as the massively fast graphics cards from NVIDIA sometime in 2018, and beyond - well, now we're hearing more concrete information about the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti... the card everyone has been waiting for.

The new report has NVIDIA releasing the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti in January 2017 (most likely at CES 2017 in early January), with very similar specs to the blazingly fast Pascal-based Titan X. NVIDIA's new GeForce GTX 1080 Ti will reportedly rock most of the same specifications as the Titan X, so we have 12GB of GDDR5X being used at 10Gbps on a 384-bit memory bus that will provide 480GB/sec of memory bandwidth.

NVIDIA's purported GeForce GTX 1080 Ti will have some CUDA cores shaved away, down to 3328 CUDA cores from the 3584 CUDA cores on Titan X. The GP102 GPU used will be clocked at 1503/1623 for Base/Boost clocks, respectively - providing 10.8 TFLOPs of compute performance, all with a 250W TDP. So we're looking at a very close competitor to Titan X, but cheaper.

Windows 10 is now on over 400 million devices

Anthony Garreffa | Software & Apps | Sep 28, 2016 9:34 PM CDT

As I type this news from a Windows 10-powered desktop PC, news has landed that Microsoft has hit a milestone of 400 million active devices running Windows 10.

It has taken Microsoft around 14 months to hit 400 million users on Windows 10 since its launch, with 100 million users poured into the Windows 10 pool since May 5. Towards the end of March, there were 207 million active devices running Windows 10 - now remember, "active devices" is a considerable team of products.

We're talking about desktops, laptops, tablets, phones, Surface Hubs, HoloLens devices, and more. Microsoft isn't quite at its 1 billion goal yet with Windows 10, but the latest desktop OS is definitely the fastest-growing Windows platform in history.

Disney remaking 'The Lion King' in new CG hybrid feature

Ben Gourlay | Celebrities & Entertainment | Sep 28, 2016 7:54 PM CDT

Following the surprise success of Jon Favreau's live action/ CG feature film hybrid 'The Jungle Book' earlier this year, the company has announced that the director's next project will be a similar "reimagining" of the 1993 animated smash-hit 'The Lion King'.

According to the studio's official announcement today, Disney has agreed to fast track the production of 'The Lion King', which is expected to feature live action backgrounds alongside CG animated animals, similarly to 'The Jungle Book' . Unlike that film however, 'The Lion King' doesn't feature any human characters. Disney has also confirmed that the film will feature some of the animated films original songs, so Hakuna Matata on that.

There's no current release date for the feature, but I'd be surprised if this won't be hitting theatres sometime in 2018.

Elon Musk wants to colonize Mars

Sean Ridgeley | Science, Space, & Robotics | Sep 28, 2016 12:57 PM CDT

SpaceX CEO and Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk is dreaming big as usual: his newly unveiled long-term plan is to colonize Mars, among other planets.

The first phase: launch an upgraded, unpiloted Dragon spacecraft toward Mars in 2018, with the aim of obtaining flight experience, while developing advanced boosters, spacecraft, and subsystems necessary for what Musk calls his "Interplanetary Transport System".

A later phase: building a 400 foot tall rocket to send large crew capsules into low-Earth orbit. The capsules are to be fueled for a trip to Mars by the same rocket, which will also carry unpiloted propellant tankers. One of the principles behind the mission structure is to make the trips much more affordable: $200,000 per ticket versus the previous standing $10 billion.

Wasteland 3 announced, features co-op play

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 28, 2016 12:02 PM CDT

Inxile Entertainment today announced Wasteland 3, which is coming to PS4, Xbox One and PC in just a few weeks with a brand new feature: co-op.

Wasteland 3 announced, features co-op play

Wasteland 3 is happening, and it'll arrive across the triumvirate of gaming platforms on October 5. Inexile pushed out a huge press release revealing key details on what the new tactical RPG has to offer, and for the first time in the history of the franchise you'll be able to brave the post-apocalyptic world with a friend in fully-fledged story-driven synchronous co-op or asynchronous competitive-style multiplayer.

The devs promise that Wasteland 3 will be an evolution over Wasteland 2, offering new additions like vehicles, environmental hazards, a new action system and more fluid turn-based combat. The co-op is quite interesting, and you can play offline singleplayer, or even play your co-op game while your friend is offline and actively sabotage them...but Inxile warns that there's consequences to whatever actions you choose to take.

Backward compatible games now up on Xbox One store

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 28, 2016 10:14 AM CDT

You an now buy and search all Xbox 360 backward compatible games on the Xbox One store, Microsoft has announced.

Backward compatible games now up on Xbox One store

(Please excuse the photo, I had to take a picture of my screen because the Xbox One doesn't let you take screen captures of the storefront or main screen.)

In an effort to consolidate convenience with a nostalgia tax, Microsoft now makes it easier than ever to purchase and search through the Xbox One's full backward compatible Xbox 360 games library. The full listing of backward compatible Xbox 360 games are now up on the Games on Demand section on Xbox One. While this sounds like a great idea on the surface, Redmond didn't waste any time in mucking it up: the Backward Compatible games list is seven rows below all the other pre-order junk and miscellaneous crap Microsoft tries to peddle, and the games are often higher in price than they should be.

Battlefield 1 has shifting anthology style campaign

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 28, 2016 9:25 AM CDT

DICE is taking a different approach with Battlefield 1's singleplayer campaign in order to tell "many different war stories."

Battlefield 1 has shifting anthology style campaign

Instead of following the traditional campaign formula with the same protagonists following a linear course, Battlefield 1's six-chapter campaign is now called War Stories, and will be a kind of shifting anthology with each chapter letting players experience the Great War through the eyes of a different nation.

Some time ago EA announced that Battlefield 1's storyline would be multi-perspective and be flavored with real-life historical figures (Lawrence of Arabia, the Harlem Hellfighters, etc), so this news isn't exactly a surprise. We have evidence that Battlefield 1's War Stories singleplayer campaign might only be six chapters at launch, but we could see more chapters added via DLC packs. We're also not sure if the chapters themselves will be comprised of smaller missions, or of it's a one-off style episode.

Valve asked to pull No Man's Sky bullshots off Steam

Almost everyone already knows that the screenshots and trailers for No Man's Sky are total lies and represent a game that doesn't exist. However, the misleading advertisements are still up on Steam, the PlayStation Store, and GOG.com, and everyday casual gamers might fall prey to the trap and buy the game.

Now the UK's official Advertisement Standards Agency has stepped in, contacting both Valve and Hello Games and calling upon them to either defend the bullshots (ha!) or pull them and replace them with screenshots and video that reflect the real game.

Destiny 2 coming to PC with major improvements

Derek Strickland | Gaming | Sep 28, 2016 6:08 AM CDT

Destiny 2 will come to PC and it'll feature a ton of improvements and overhauls to make it into a fully-fledged new game, according to multiple sources.

Destiny 2 coming to PC with major improvements

Most of Bungie's 750 strong development team is working on Destiny 2, which will launch in late 2017 across consoles and PC. In order to get the game's debut on PC just right, Bungie apparently plans to scrap existing content and start from scratch to create all new character classes, regions, and refine the mechanics to meet expectations of enthusiast PC gamers. That means no exploitative DLC nonsense, no weird experimental junk--native 1080p 60FPS and 4K 60FPS enthusiast PC FPS gaming.

Sources familiar with Bungie's plans have reportedly told Kotaku's Jason Schreier that Destiny 2 will feature major content revamps similar to how Diablo II made dramatic changes from the original Diablo game, leaving old character classes, levels, and content behind. Destiny 2 may feature more feature-rich environments with towns, dynamic quests, and actual inhabited areas instead of the plastic and one-dimensional environs of the base game. The way it sounds to me is that Destiny was the big beta test experiment, and Destiny 2 will see Bungie doing everything they should've done in the first game.

The Walking Dead co-creator suing AMC for $280 million

Anthony Garreffa | Business, Financial & Legal | Sep 28, 2016 3:15 AM CDT

The Walking Dead is one of the biggest shows on TV, so it should come as no surprise that co-creator Frank Darabont is now suing AMC for $280 million, after he was fired from the network in the middle of The Walking Dead's second season.

Darabont alleges that AMC denied him profits from The Walking Dead "by producing the series and then licensing it to its cable network affiliate for not enough money". AMC says the lawsuit is without merit, adding: "Plaintiffs' damages claim has no basis in reality and we will continue to vigorously defend against this lawsuit".

THR reports: "Considering that Darabont was contractually entitled to as much as 10 percent of certain Walking Dead profits after deductions, the damages figure suggests the series has made billions. The lawsuit asserts, however, that a low license fee formula has been designed to ensure that the show would never be in the black for profit participants".

Samsung talks about building a 10K mobile display for VR

Anthony Garreffa | Extended Reality (XR) | Sep 28, 2016 1:24 AM CDT

We've heard from Raja Koduri, the boss of Radeon Technologies Group tease 16K per eye in VR headsets, but now Samsung is getting close to making it a reality with teasing 10K mobile displays.

Samsung President & Chief Strategy Officer, Young Sohn, talked about smartphone-focused VR headsets and standalone VR solutions. Samsung's decision to market, and ship a dedicated all-in-one VR headset would require a VR market that changes in the next few months, and throughout 2017. Sohn said: "Is [virtual reality] hype or mainstream? I don't have a good answer for you today".

Sohn talked about the battery efficiency, latency needs and display technology areas of where Samsung needs to improve, for future VR products. He said that next-gen VR headsets need pixel densities that are "at least two times" that of the current-gen displays on the market. Sohn said that VR would be a massive driving force for the company to "move faster" in making next-gen displays, but he added that making a 10K mobile display would require a hefty investment of $5-$10 billion.

NVIDIA to reveal next-gen Volta architecture at GTC 2017

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Sep 27, 2016 9:21 PM CDT

We've just heard that NVIDIA will unveil a Pascal refresh in 2017, but the next-gen Volta GPU architecture is what everyone wants to know about on the high-end/enthusiast level of the scale.

Volta is expected to be unveiled at NVIDIA's own GPU Technology Conference, which takes place between May 8-11 next year. NVIDIA is expected to follow in the steps of its Tesla P100 unveiling at GTC 2016 earlier this year, unveiling Volta on a new HPC part first, with the Volta-based HPC product expected to be powered by the ridiculously fast HBM2 tech.

NVIDIA boss Jen-Hsun Huang is also rumored to unveil an updated GPU roadmap, which will include new codenames and technology details for future GPU technology ffrom NVIDIA. NVIDIA is expected to dive away from the 10nm node, and go right into 7nm once Volta is here and established on the 14nm node. Not only that, but the future GPUs will have support for both HBM3 and GDDR6.

Volta-based GeForce cards coming in 2018 with 48GB GDDR6

Anthony Garreffa | Graphics Cards | Sep 27, 2016 9:06 PM CDT

NVIDIA is not only expected to unveil a Pascal 2.0 refresh in 2017 on Samsung's 14nm FinFET node, but the company is expected to make a big splash at its GTC 2017 event in May by unveiling their new Volta architecture, and more.

Well, today is the day of NVIDIA leaks, with the company reportedly aiming at a 2018 release for its consumer-focused GeForce graphics cards based on the next-gen Volta GPU architecture. These new cards will reportedly rock a huge 16GB of GDDR6, the new standard from Micron that's quite a large step on the already impressive GDDR5X standard that powers the GeForce GTX 1080 and new Titan X.

Micron's new GDDR6 has over 14Gbps of bandwidth, compared to the 10Gbps on GDDR5 and just 7-8Gbps on GDDR5. GDDR6 is much more efficient than GDDR5X, with lower power consumption allowing for more VRAM on higher-end graphics cards. The new 16GB GDDR6 cards will be based on the upcoming Volta-based graphics cards with a 256-bit memory bus, while the higher-end GV102 will use a faster 384-bit memory bus and possibly 24GB or even 48GB cards thanks to GDDR6.
